We were greeted at the door with so many smiles and the entire host team was so pleasant, not only to us but to everyone waiting. We met the GM Joe and you could immediately tell his team truly loves and respects him. He was running that front door like a soccer captain, greeting guests, helping his team, checking tables and keeping everything moving. We scored an amazing table on the patio overlooking the water and were greeted by Jennifer who was seriously the BEST. She walked us through the menu and pointed out some of the iconic and legendary dishes we needed to try. You could tell she knew the menu and genuinely loved the food she was describing. Right from the beginning she sold us on this beautiful raw tuna special, but obviously being in New England we needed oysters and some raw bar too. She recommended the grilled octopus to have in between our courses and told us we needed to try the chowders. Everything she recommended was spot on. Ohh and she told me I needed to try the Corporate Chefs Wife's own Hot Sauce!! It was so good! The cocktails were amazing and I finished with a mezcal cocktail that was an absolute A+. One of my favorite parts of the whole experience was honestly watching the hospitality and teamwork throughout the restaurant. Everyone was helping everyone. You can tell this place is really well run and that the people working there actually enjoy being there. Jennifer especially was just happy, genuine and so much fun to have taking care of us. The Caviar Cones were a bit gimmicky; the crème fraiche overpowered the caviar but it practically melted in my mouth. We got the Lobster Shrimp Fritters aka Bag O' Donuts which I surprisingly liked although they are pretty batter-heavy. It paired well with the Castle Hill "Windward Weiss" Draft. This is a great dish to just have on the table for sharing. For entrees, we got the Warm Buttered Lobster Roll and Fish Sandwich. I absolutely loved this Fish Sandwich. Crispy, flaky, light. The shaved lettuce and pickles added some fresh crunch. My only suggestion would be to swap the kewpie mayo for tartar sauce. The Warm Buttered Lobster Roll had large, fresh pieces of lobster inside. The stuffed Quahogs tasted good but I feel like I tasted more of the stuffing over the actual shellfish. It still tasted good, but I feel like I should've gotten more shellfish. It was a BUSY Saturday night, we had no reservation, and the bar was packed... but divine timing somehow worked in our favor and two seats opened up right at the end of the bar. That's where we met Nick behind the bar, and honestly, he made the night. Nick was working the service well, taking care of a packed bar and banging out beautifully curated cocktails. I still don't know how he was that efficient while also taking the time to walk us through the entire menu. You could tell he genuinely took pride in the food he was describing and wanted us to experience it. I started with the Mezcal Negroni and from there we decided on a few small bites. First, the ricotta gnudi... perfectly fried and warm with just the right bite on the outside, then you break into this warm, soft little pillow of ricotta that was an absolute flavor bomb. Finished with freshly shaved Parmesan on top. I swear for a second I thought I was sitting somewhere on the water in Italy. Then the Scotch bonnet egg... WOW... truly every dish was just mind blowing ...all this dishes we ate....Nothing overpowered anything else. Every bite mattered. You could actually taste every layer and every little detail that went into all the dishes. Then came the beef tartare. Beautifully presented with the green crab purée in the center and crispy chips for that perfect crunch. At this point Nick basically said, "Trust me," and asked if he could choose our next course. YES. PLEASE. Out came this gorgeous lamb sausage with fresh greens, snap peas, mint, dill, pickled vegetables and this beautiful creamy green sauce underneath. THAT DISH. The sausage was rich, perfectly cooked and packed with flavor, but all those fresh herbs, greens and acidity made the entire plate feel bright and balanced. Hearty and comforting while somehow still tasting fresh and light. Then Nick convinced us to put our trust in him one last time and let him choose dessert. He brought out the bread pudding and I am not exaggerating when I say it was the PERFECT ending to this entire food adventure. I literally had tears in my eyes. The food, the cocktails, the service, the salt water in the air, the smiles from the staff... everything just came together.....Nothing was pretentious. Everything was highly elevated while still having this incredible sense of warmth and comfort. We waited an entire hour for our entrées to arrive, and the waitstaff wasn't very forthcoming with updates. We had to track someone down anytime we had a question or needed something, which became very frustrating. Once the food finally arrived, it was disappointing. Several of the dishes were extremely salty. I ordered the swordfish, which was slightly overcooked, and the vegetables were overwhelmingly acidic, as if an entire bottle of vinegar had been poured over them. They were also topped with a generous amount of capers, making the dish even saltier. Overall, it just wasn't enjoyable. I mentioned my concerns to our waitress, but unfortunately, she didn't seem particularly concerned. Hopefully, she passed the feedback along to the chef so some adjustments can be made. While we waited by the bar, a very nice waitress took our drink order--a lemon drop martini, beautifully crafted, well-balanced, and pleasantly strong. We were seated shortly after and, of course, ordered another. (Both times, I took several sips before remembering to take a photo!) Our waitress, Mikela, was truly lovely--sincere, sweet, and very courteous. She was attentive throughout the meal without ever being intrusive, which made the experience feel relaxed and effortless. At the end, I told her I wished I could give her 6 stars, but Yelp only allows 5. For dinner, we both ordered the seared rare ahi tuna steak. I had mine with garlic bread, while my husband chose mashed potatoes. I also added the $9.95 salad buffet, which is such a great deal--you definitely won't leave hungry. I especially love their buffet-style salad bar, which offers nearly every option one could want. Both of our ahi tuna steaks were fantastic--fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Once again, I dug into my tuna before remembering to take a photo! We finished the meal with a cheesecake to share--another delicious ending to a wonderful dinner. We're already planning our next visit--there are still so many dishes and drinks we'd love to try.

Lately she'd been telling me about a chocolate martini from The Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant, and being the martini and chocolate fan that I am, I simply had to experience it. So I finally got a day when I could join her on a trip, and so we went there on Labor Day. Once there, we walked right in at 11:30 am, and were seated immediately. The interior is fun and interesting -- antique this and that, including a huge iron door that looks like it went to a furnace, and had embossed lettering, I believe it was Newport Highschool. Perhaps the restaurant location is where the HS coal room was originally??? Anyway, one the way to the table, the hostess said something about the soup and salad bar being over there to my right, and so I went to check it out, and once I took a gander inside the two soup containers, I grabbed a bowl of Portuguese Kale Soup and brought it to the table. Judi said "That's all you're gonna get?" And I said "Of course not, I'll grab some salad and maybe get a sandwich or something." "Oh" she said, and then got up to check out the soup and salad bar herself. Meanwhile as I'm slurping the delicious, heart y soup, loaded with chourico, potatoes, carrots, kale, beans, etc., I'm perusing the menu and I notice that it says that if you purchase a sandwich of $9 or more then you get the soup and salad bar for $10, and then the soup and salad bar alone was $18. Okay, so perhaps I just wasn't thinking about the world in which I now live that basically has you paying for the bread basket you might get served. But again, the hostess just basically slurred out something about the soup and salad bar and my brain heard that it was complimentary. I honestly have to wonder if that's part of the trick(?) to get you to go for it, and not realize that it's considered a meal in itself, and then you order a sandwich or whatever, and now you're paying twice the amount you thought you'd be paying, but hey, it's Newport and people are spending $40 on a stupid baseball cap. And so, you know, if you end up having to pay a bit too much at a restaurant, you don't make a scene, you just say "Yeah, I meant to do that". Okay, I'm trying not to be sardonic here, trying not to sound like one of those "everybody's out to get me" kind of folks, so I'll just shut up at this point, on this particular point. I just hope that the owners and/or managers will inform the hostess to be a bit more clear on what the soup and salad bar actually means. That'd be nice. So there was no way I was buying a sandwich to go along with the soup and salad bar -- I simply cannot eat as much as I did when I was in my 20's and couldn't gain a pound if I ate all day long. I was able to (slightly) save face once Judi went for the soup and salad bar herself and was satisfied with the freshness and deliciousness thereof. But the piece de resistance, the very reason we both came to this establishment in the first place ... the chocolate martini! So this martini looks nothing like you'd expect as clear as water. I believe it's got a vodka base, and then some creme de cocoa, and is showered in grated chocolate flakes. It was absolutely splendid! Nice and boozy without being overpowering, and the flavor was amazing. And then for some strange reason, Judi is looking at the dessert menu. She reads of a few of them, asking me if I'd like something like that. I keep saying "I'm pretty full Jude", but she was persistent. She especially was taken with the Ghirardelli Fudge Brownie with 4 Scoops of Vanilla Ice Cream. She said "What if we can get them to split it in half on two separate plates?" I said "Ohhhhkaayyyyy..." And our waitress said "Absolutely!" She came back with two large portions (see attached photo ... just remember, that's a picture of HALF of the dessert serving!). Oh my word! It was large and quite yummy. A nice, crunchy and soft brownie made with Ghirardelli chocolate, with plenty of walnuts therein, two lovely scoops of ice cream, all drizzled with chocolate sauce. A splendid way to cap it all off. So I'd go back again, just with the knowledge that it's EITHER the soup and salad bar OR a sammich, at least for a guy my age and size and appetite. But definitely for that lovely chocolate martini ... and maybe that fudge brownie to make it complete :)

It was absolutely packed with large, fresh chunks of lobster, not just a few pieces hidden under the bun. The buttery toasted roll was the perfect complement without overpowering the lobster, and the lemon on top added just the right fresh finish. The quality, portion size, and flavor made it easy to justify the price. If you're in Newport and craving a lobster roll, Newport Chowder Company should absolutely be on your list. I'd order this again without hesitation.
