Yummy drinks we got from the drink bar in the back! Horchata and passion fruit agua Fresca ~$5 for both

If you've lived around BR for a while, the ideal market on Sherwood has been a staple for a minute, but this one on Burbank has opened up in the last year or so. It's relatively closer to me so I've been here twice before. The first time was to pick up some tres leches dessert, which was so good! My most recent visit, which prompted this review was last weekend! I was a little overwhelmed stepping in because I'm not too familiar with Mexican ingredients/supermarkets but I easily found myself drawn in by all the pretty colors and liveliness. I got all the ingredients to make Birria tacos and they came out amazing and I had no trouble at all finding what I needed. The assistant manager at the drink bar was so friendly and offered us samples, which definitely got me hooked on the passion fruit drink. Overall, the ingredients to make about 20 Birria tacos (with plenty of leftover chilies, tortillas and cheese) was only $55! That's a steal IMO, I'll definitely be back.

    Chicken stew and plantains!

I wasn't looking for anything specific to eat but this place called to me so I whipped into the parking lot and headed in! This is such a homey type of place that puts a lot of pride and joy in their food and showing off Latin culture. Los Alvarez Exxpress Latin Food is a local mom and pop spot on the corner of Gardere and Burbank next to the S&P Food Store/Chevron gas station. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect going in but what I got was a lot of warmth and comfort. This is a place for Latin locals to relax and get a bit of familiarity and good food. I dined in and ordered the Granadas Catrachas. Catrachas are traditionally known as Honduran tostadas. Los Alvarez puts their spin on it by using Granada flour to create a puff pocket and stuff it with meat, rice and cheese and serve it with encurtido (Honduran pickled vegetables). I ordered one with chicken and one with beef. The serving was huge and absolutely delicious! I was only able to eat one. That, on top of the chips and salsa and black bean dip had me full for the rest of the day! Everyone that works there is friendly and for a second you don't feel like you're in Baton Rouge. This is a magical place.

We also asked for chips and salsa, and they brought out what looked like beans, which looked disgusting. They brought out our food and served white rice instead of Mexican rice. My wife's food had bones in it. She ordered a Sprite, and there was something floating in the bottle. Since they don't speak English, they didn't do anything. To top it off, they charge gratuity.

They've shared the space with other food trucks, which has usually found business when next door Dorothy's (#1) has an influx of cars in the adjacent lot. It may pass itself off as a taco truck, but like many of the Latin businesses in the city, it's really a Honduran one. My first time coming here was a tough one. It was late afternoon and their platters had sold out for the day but they had still had number of meats (chorizo, barbacoa, chicharron) available for tacos. The subsequent result was an unmemorable output of tacos that I wouldn't care to get again. No salsas, limes, and additional condiments could save the meal. As always, shoot for their Honduran specialties. However, their platos tipicos plates are the real true sell. The early morning / lunch crowds will enjoy their carne asada plate, which is often paired with their rice and beans with a little cabbage salad topped with chimol. If not, the baleadas are usually a safe bet. I prefer mine "con todo" with eggs, meat, chicken, sausage, cheese, beans, and crema. There is no set schedule that I've been able to find in the last few years. They will appear and sometimes not be there at all. Social media has been sparse and like many trucks, the prices aren't listed on the menu. The service has been lukewarm at best and I would recommend going the takeout / eat in car route since the outdoor seating provided is limited and not weather proof. ___________ (#1) https://www.yelp.com/biz/dorothys-soul-food-kitchen-baton-rouge My photos: https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/antojitos-express-baton-rouge?userid=ysCBsXWPB-LAiewVS3jZfQ
