I have tried to give the Idlewood Barrington location my lighting business - twice! Both times I was completely ignored the entire time I was in the store. I wandered around, took photos, and had my list of questions in hand. There was a desk full of employees, and no other customers in the store. It was very helpful to see many different lights in the showroom while being able to find specific lights from many different online sources. I worked with a designer (Maria W.) who helped me create an online 'wishlist' of many lights she thought I would like based on my feedback, house style, and budget. Within a few visits, we were able to select different fixtures for the entire house. The entire order was quickly delivered to our new house with the appropriate lightbulbs so that the electrician could install. We had a very disappointing experience buying a ceiling fan here. The ceiling fan was defective, and the replacement process was unclear. Initially we were told to contact the manufacturer. Later we were told an exchange would be accepted. We were repeatedly told to use professional electricians which we were using with Scholl Construction, and the inference that we had damaged the fan by installing it ourselves was annoying and untrue. Now we have to hire an electrician to swap out the replacement. Definitely a frustrating experience. read more

I came in to get a landscape light repaired that Was purchased several months back the girls were very nice and said they didn't have a repair shop here but they can send it to highland park store. We bought a new bedroom fan and it was explained to us in no uncertain terms that we'd require a new down pole to suspend the ceiling fan. I said that I didn't think so, it's nothing more than a pipe to run wiring through. No, it was explained, a down rod was needed to meet the requirements of the new fan. OK. The down rod was ordered at the same time as the fan. Our electrician comes by to do the install. As I had thought, he used the color matching down rod that we already had. And he wired in the old remote control so we had a new yet very familiar "old" fan. Nice. The new fan didn't have a remote control - wall plate only. When we went to return the down pole, we had to pay 30% restocking fee on a part we thought very strongly that we didn't need AND purchased only at the behest of Idlewood. Too bad; it turned a great store with a great selection in to something we'll - diminished. Caveat Emptor read more

Purchased several - 8 to be exact over a period of time - lighting fixtures at the Barrington location. The Lighting Specialist named Jill is so helpful/personable. The showroom is beautiful with many selections. Jill will work with the customer and give advice on what type of light fixture will flatter a particular room. I called a few times to ask her to review a light fixture that I considered buying and she took the time to look in the catalog and share her opinion which I wanted/appreciated. When you walk in this location, everyone at the front desk makes you feel welcome. As we are looking to replace 4 ceiling fixtures inside and all of our outdoor lighting, we happened upon this place while on our way to another lighting store. When we walked in, 3 women sat behind the counter and 1 said "hello". That was it. We were in the store for at least 20 minutes and actual found 1 of the chandeliers we were looking to purchase. We measured, we talked, we tried to get an idea of how the light would project out....all on our own. Not once did anyone of the 3 employees ask if we needed any help. Kept chatting with each other, one was actually filing her nails....and then a male employee joined in the chit chat. Must be nice to have so much business that you can let people walk out....here we were trying to give our business to a brick and mortar store.
