Grew up less than a mile from here, and LOVE this place with a passion. However, now that I'm the one footing the bills instead of mom & dad it has become a very rare treat. Some highlights: - Their native corn. When you can get it, there is absolutely NO better in the state! - Their fresh-squeezed orange juice. You watch them squeeze it right in the store, one of the few "fresh-squeezed" brands that truly tastes like you're drinking an orange - Their sweets!!! I am torn - I find a lot of products here that you can't find elsewhere and the produce and flowers are lovely. It is a great source of specialty items that I could probably get online, but it is nice to see them in person. The downside is that there is no customer service (and considering the snootiness of many of the customers I would think it would be high level). Employees on the sales floor will not make eye contact or smile, no one acknowledges that you are there, they seem generally unhappy. Check out clerks are fairly sullen and uncommunicative. Last time I was there just as I got to the register, the clerk turned away without a word and waited on someone who wasn't even in line. I expected to go here finding a cute, barn-like, vintage feeling store. Although the inside tries to feel like a farm stand, the giant signs explaining where everything is from (chile, Texas, florida) take away from that local vibe. I found myself near several sales people who didn't even acknowledge that customers were in the store and was almost bumped into by one without even a glance upwards. Got some prepared foods....eh, pretty bland....ok, very bland. Checked out the cheeses....lots of goat and sliced deli cheeses but other than that nothing too spectacular. The flowers....I had found a review about the flowers, and although they were beautiful, I didn't find them any more exciting than your average grocery store flower display. Needless to say, although I love exploring new places (hell, we drove an hour and a half to wegmans in a blizzard because we were bored), I can gladly cross this one off my list. read more

A Foodie's Heaven!!! The Best Produce in Massachusetts. The Napoli family pours their blood and sweat into this store -- literally . They even get up every morning at 3am and ride into the New England Food Market handpick all of the fresh vegetables and fruits for that day. This is why their produce is top of the line and cannot be beat. In addition, they also have an actual farm in Acton that supplies fresh, local, seasonal produce and flowers for the store. Freshness is Idylwilde's top priority, and lots of Boston's restaurant chefs only shop here for that reason. On top of produce, Idylwilde also has a wide variety of Italian specialty foods and baked goods. An extensive collection of fresh breads, olive oils, balsamic vinaigrettes, and cheese selection to die for! The other thing so unique and special about Idylwilde is that is a family business that has been running since the early 1930's. I travel here from West Roxbury because I love their fresh vegetables and fruits. Recently, bought corn, tomatoes, carrots. Love the refrigerator section for cut up cantaloupe, turnip, mushrooms, etc. Everything is very fresh, and keeps longer than other places I have shopped. I try to tiptoe past the bread, cheese, bakery section because I'm trying to eat healthier. But everything looks great. Willing to pay more for quality. Highly recommend. read more

I am an Idylwilde expert, a patron for the past 15 years and I still forget they are closed on Tuesdays. This is the most annoying thing ever. I am just around the corner and manage to find an excuse to come here at least two or three times a week. The quality is top-notch and they have prices to match. There is a wonderful selection of product from hard to source varieties of apples to your basic romaine heads. They also have a few "our-own" varieties of produce throughout the growing seasons. The prepared foods are all done in house and are to die for. Tuna salad - amazing, egg salad - YUM, roasted red peppers - YES PLEASE. And that's just for starters. Fresh squeezed juices, all sorts of yummy Asian entrees, chicken cutlets, meatballs, marinara sauces, dozens of pasta and bean salads. I've had every single one and love them all. They are pricey and worth it. All of the baked goods are wonderful. They've taken to having apple cider donuts week-round (not sure about this summer though) and you can smell them in the air the minute you get out of the car. I love all the cookies, cupcakes are great, and nothing beats a chocolate croissant first thing Saturday AM. Great hot coffee and iced coffee too (summer). They also carry a wonderful selection of pies, cookies, cakes, brownies and other baked goodies and breads from the best bakeries around New England. Their dry-goods selection is excellent with all sorts of nuts, dried fruits, party mixes, rices, pastas, etc. Not to mention the hundreds of oils, pickles, vinegars, mustards, etc. And yes, you can get your Hellman's here too. They carry every spice you could possibly need, dried chilis, a million wonderful chocolates, maple syrups, dessert toppings, honey, and the list goes on. Great meat and poultry and they carry turkeys from Bob's in Lancaster and can get you any sort of cut of meat as a special request. Great sausages too along with a complete deli and gourmet cheese offering. And don't forget the amazing offering of sandwiches. My favorite is the Gobbler - turkey cranberry and stuffing. YUM. Staff is very good. A few have warmed up to me over the years but generally they are professional, quick and polite. Careful when you go. Sunday mid-morning is the old ladies in fur coats. Don't mess with them. I has run over by one at 9 months pregnant and she was all annoyed her cart was jostled as she rammed into ME! Saturday early is a good bet - all the goods are out and in abundant supply. Always pick your pastries from the back of the pile. The one thing that irks me about the setup is that there isn't too much to protect them from the masses of people (and kids - mine own included) that walk by. So if you grab from the back, it's probably germ free. My two year old has snagged several cider donuts from his perch in the grocery cart while I'm picking out my bread. I have been going to Idylwilde Farm since I was young enough to be in diapers with my mom and grandmother. In that nearly 30 year span, Idylewilde Farms has produced the best produce I've ever consumed. Honestly, I can't think of any farm or store that does produce quite as well. I don't want to spread rumors, but the farmers here might have done a deal with the devil because I don't understand how else they could possibly produce such superior produce. Seriously, their fruits are always two times the size of those found elsewhere, juicy, and fresh. Blueberries the size of quarters, nectarines with juice that drizzles down your chin with every bite. Same goes for the vegetables. You pretty much don't even have to look them over, just throw them in a bag and go. They also have a great selection of dairy products, including cheese and yogurt. I don't eat meat but I hear from others that is also good. They have an interesting selection of nuts, frozen entrees and ethnic cuisines. Their prepared foods are also yummy if you're looking to pick up some pasta salad for lunch. And their selection of baked goods - OMG. We got an apple pie from there once that came from another local company. I have never before or since had pie that good. I could seriously spend like an hour circling their baked goods section drooling. With all that said, I have to reduce them from 5 stars to 4 for two very important reasons. 1. You get what you pay for in life, and Idylwilde Farms is no exception. Their stuff is very pricey. I like to go here for special occasions or if I need specific things I can't locate elsewhere (e.g., I came here recently looking for crystalized ginger). But I could not afford to shop here every week. 2. The parking lot is packed and the store aisles are very narrow, which requires being thoughtful about those around you as well as patient. The problem is this place always seems to be packed with entitled people who clearly think their time is more valuable than yours. They have no problem wedging themselves in your way, hitting you with their cart, monopolizing sections of the store. I can't tell you how many times I've been there and politely said "excuse me" to either move myself out of someone's way or try to reach for something only to be intentionally ignored or scowled at. Seriously, I cannot think of another store that has such rude customers. So be prepared for both of these things if you shop here. Just remember that by the time you check out you'll have a bounty of the most amazing food ever. read more

When you buy food there, it's going to be fresher and better quality, so it tastes better and lasts longer in your fridge. Simply put - its a wonderland of fancy food. You can't not love the dozens of kinds of honey, the bizarre perfection of the produce, and endless assortment of fancy little foods you never knew you needed. Plenty of staples, too - and not everything is priced crazy.. just most things. Many of those things are worth the price - so you can't complain much. I have one gripe - its one that I believe is a fundamental issue in Mass. While Idylwilde has a nice looking sandwich menu - I've yet to really love a sandwich there. Some do come on great Iggy's breads, but others come on flat out awful sub rolls. I've been going here with Liz for over 20 years. I remember all the expansions and well here you now have the premier produce stand that rivals Wholes Foods presentations. From the days of just fruit and vegetables, you now have olive oil heaven, cold cuts, bakes, flowers, rice, grain, bread, pumpkins, more flowers, fresh squeezed o.j. , grapefruit, and even carrot. I understand you drink carrot juice for a week you can forget tanning for a month. Sort of NJ type tan. Super fresh produce that you can count on year round. I mean you want a tomato for real mayo/tomato/salt and pepper sandwich in January.....this is your best bet. Need herbs for that turkey....again. Not just one type of mushroom or even two but damn 10 or 12 or more. It's mushroom heaven. I really like to cook and Liz likes to buy. She buys cut flowers like we actually might invite someone over. The pure delight of arranging is enough for the Lizzy to be in pure heaven. I like to fish she likes to arrange. So why not 5 stars....simply the price. It sometimes is overwhelming. I'm not a good shopper so I put up with it but I think the owners could just try to give a break somewhere. Christ they have us hooked. They are also farmers so damn I buy local keep the prices local. Otherwise great business people, nice family owned and operated business and a real experience. oh did I say cheese? Idylwilde Farms is a great resource if you are a Foodie, and live out here in the relative sticks. The problem is, you pay a premium for it. The pretentious name should clue you in on that. Their plant prices are ridiculous. Honestly. You have to be pretty lazy out here is you are willing to pay their prices for annuals. Having an in house Florist is genius for them. They have a decent selection of locally grown produce, at jacked up prices. They have a great selection of cheeses, and delicacies. The Meat selection is kind of lame. Last winter, I made my Mom really happy by giving her a hamper of cheese, pate, tapenades, and other yummies from here. This place is a step below Formaggio's in terms of selection, and right on par with price. Formaggio's has a way better selection of bakery items, though. If you want a kick-ass bakery, go to Concord Teacakes, or Nashoba Brook Bakery, in West Concord. So, while I think it's great that it is here, and I go here sometimes; I'm not a constant shopper. For instance, in apple season, they charged way too much for local apples, and also still shipped tons of apples (which are grown locally) from half-way around the world. Huh? Why? read more

You can't help, but love this place. Before you even walk inside you will usually see a table with fruit samples. I had some of the most delicious figs ever my first trip there and I was still outside. Once you walk in there are plenty of other samples too. The produce is amazing. You will not see anything that is bruised or less than spectacular. Everything looks perfect and tastes just as good as it looks. They have a large selection of cheeses and some of them are cheeses I have a hard time finding elsewhere. There is a nice selection of prepared foods and salads. There is also a deli and they will make one of their own sandwiches for you or you have have then use any of the meats or cheeses and create your own sandwich. Near the registers they have a whole selection of candy. This is not candy bar type candy, but more like old fashions candy store type stuff. OK not really, but a lot of it is packaged in little plastic tubs so it seems less mass produced even though it is not. The prices here are a bit high. Very good selection of high-quality cheeses, fresh pasta, in-store bakery goods and even ready-to-eat meals add to the fun of shopping in this local farm-stand style upscale market. My only problem is trying to stick to my shopping list and not buying "impulse items". The flower selection is always extensive and first-rate quality, although again as Christine C. said, they are pricey. For rare ingredients and the finest quality, they are worth the trip! I had a very unfortunate interaction with the store manager. He didn't seem to care about me at all as a person, was more interested in his produce. If I'd had a cart full of their over-priced produce, perhaps he would have treated me differently. He was brusque and borderline rude. While the product is good, why would I go somewhere and pay so much to be treated that way? I've gone there for 25 years, but I think I'm done. I live close by, but come here as infrequently as I can. Why? PRICEY. But good. I've never bought anything here that wasn't very high quality. What brings us back again and again are the cheeses and the flowers. Their cheese selection is as good as the Concord Cheese Shop, and they're much more convenient for me. Flowers: Good selection, high quality, and hey, flowers are expensive everywhere -- Idylwilde isn't especially expensive for flowers. Produce: outstanding, beautiful, $$$. And I've never seen anything there that was organic. What a shame. Bread: Good, but as others have noted, Nashoba Brook has better. Pastries: Best chocolate croissants around! Hands down my favorite spot to shop in the area! The produce is leaps and bounds better than what you would find in a larger store. I've been able to pick up items like fresh lemongrass and Jerusalem artichokes (things that would typically be more difficult to find elsewhere). Everything is so fresh. The wine, beer, and cheese selection is extensive. Love the croissants which are always warm and never stale. Staff is friendly and always willing to help find something or answer questions. I could go on and on. When friends and family come To visit the first stop they always ask to make is a trip to Idylwilde. Lucky to live near such a great place. I found this store while driving by one day and so I decided to stop in. It's a cross between a farm stand and a gourmet grocer and I love it!! They have a large selection of fruits, veggies, cheese, flowers, ready made items and desserts. They even have these delicious frozen pizzas supplied by a real pizza place that is the closest to delivery I've ever had! If I lived closer I would definitely go there more often. read more

As a resident of Maynard for the better part of my life, Idylwilde has been a destination for my family since the innocent and awestruck days I call my youth. My earliest recollection of this bustling indoor farm stand/food store, was the machines churning and sloshing with fresh squeezed orange juice! Still an ongoing operation, whiffs of nostalgia mixing with the pulp and mashed up orange peels make for a haunting aroma. Fresh prepared foods, baskets full of baguettes baked fresh that day, and some of the moistest cookies and other baked goods I have ever sank my teeth into, this place has much more to offer than just fresh veggies (which is mainly the reason I stop in! Terrific!) It can become crowded and disoriented fairly easily, and you can watch your wallet shrivel up if you give in to every item that tempts your taste buds there, which happens frequently. You've been forewarned! So other than the Mom on cell phone, gripping a carriage brimming with groceries, with two kids hanging off of it, totally oblivious to the fact that she has been blocking the hunk of wensleydale cheese you so desperately need to have for the past ten minutes...this place is a must! read more

I often stop in several times a week, mostly because my commute takes me past it. I live in the area and have seen it grow from a more modest farm stand to it's current state. It feels like a quality place with all of the hard to find in the suburbs products and range of produce and meats/fish but it has a very standoffish vibe with some seriously overpriced stuff, from the $20/gl orange juice to $9/qt chocolate milk imported from Belgium and $6/ltr water from Italy. They even had $98/lb smoked salmon at one point. So yea, all the prep'd foods are silly overpriced but if you pick-n-choose carefully, the sticker-shock at the checkout doesn't feel *that* bad. The prep'd foods are uniformly bland; the soups are horrible; the cheese selection is OK (although the Cheese Shop in Concord is better). The in-house baked goods are actually pretty mediocre. I marvel at the fact they can take stale bread, pan toast it and sell it as fancy croutons for $12/lb. Brilliant marketing. The workers are nice enough but it never feels 'warm' & friendly. And don't even get me started w/ the customers who decide to park their carts in the aisles and start chatting or the classic 'let me stand over the green beans and spend 20 minutes looking over EVERY.SINGLE.ONE before I put any in a bag; some of us actually want to get in and out reasonably quickly. The workers seem to spend a huge amount of energy making sure the display of the products is always pristine. If a bottle of X was purchased, you can be sure someone will be around in a couple of minutes to adjust the display back to 'fullness'. So, good marks on selection but serious negatives for most everything else. read more

Sadly, this place is in serious decline The soups are terrible, the meat goes bad before the date on the package, the dairy and refrigerated section does not keep food well, and then when you have to return something they give you a super hard time and you have to defend your case. Recently, I bought some things there that were bad when I got them home and I decided not to return them because I didn't want that look of disgust and disbelief. $12 down the drain. Asking for something special is no fun either.. If they have to go out of their way for you they sour pretty quickly. And the sons of the owner have this entitled and unhappy look on their faces. Unpleasant. And most of the Asian and other minority workers there seem more like indentured servants. Have lived in Acton since I was six. Have shopped at Idylwilde over the years. I hate to say it, but it has gone down hill. One evening I was looking for a specific cheese. I asked the young man (fairly sure it was one of the Napoli boys) if they had a certain goat cheese. He said yes, but he didn't know how to "cut it" and suggested I come back the next day. Seriously?? The cheese i was asking about does not come in 600 lb wheels -- it's just a goat cheese & easily done. I wasn't thrilled with his attitude but thought maybe just a bad night. Then i went over to tomatoes -- was going to buy some yellow & green -- the yellow tomatoes had mold. Not just a little spot -- it was several tomatoes. I've had issues with some of their baked goods being less than fresh, as well. I bought a banana cream pie brought it home for dessert that night. I cut into it & under the cream the bananas were disgusting --- discolored & runny. I checked the date -- the pie was over three days past the sell by date. I still had the receipt so i brought it back the next day. I went to a register -- showed the pie to the kid who called over a "manager". It was a Napoli wife (can't remember her name!). She gave me such a hard time about the return. The way & length of time she took examining the receipt -- like i spend my spare time generating phony receipts for bad pies. It was insulting. By the way -- there is now a woman who seems to be their "cheese person". Her attitude is kind of obnoxious, too. She corrected my pronunciation of a french cheese in a most officious manner. One problem though -- she was wrong! No, I didn't even try to tell her. I was looking at what they had on display for aged gouda & it didn't look very aged. I asked how old it was & was told "i know its over six months...maybe it's three years -- i don't know". yeah, i'll pass. I used to be a regular shopper -- not any more. Not in love with this place anymore. It's always so crowded, and they have very few free samples. Parking is a hassle, and the prices are outrageous. Even the soup selection is pretty meh. My friend and I got one the other day and it was boiling hot; like it needed 20 warnings to be careful and we waited over 30 minutes for it to get to sort of tongue searing boiling before we dared taste it. I don't think I'll make the special trip to shop here going forward, and that makes me sad. read more

If you're looking to get bargains on an unbelievable array of cheese, breads, fruits, vegetables, candies, spices, sauces, cookies, cakes, flowers, and already-prepared foods, then skip this place because the goods here are EXPENSIVE but well worth it. Idylwilde Farm is a well-organized, clean farm house "stand" that features fresh fruits and vegetables arranged in a visually appealing way. The establishment's entrance looks like a farmer's market, with fruits, vegetables, and garden stuff lining the walls. Inside are rows and rows of gorgeous produce, with spices, nuts, dried fruit, and sauces lining the left wall. There's a small cart area for Cheryl Ann's challah (about $2 more than if you purchased the bread at Cheryl Ann's itself in Brookline) that faces an extensive cheese display. A coffee area showcases some excellent java, and that section abuts a refrigerated section of milk, eggs, yogurts, and prepared foods and hors d'oeuvres, as well as fresh squeezed...and yummy...orange juice. In the back of the store is a cookie, pie, and candy section (which at times has the largest and most appetizing candy apples I've ever seen) as well as a place to purchase healthy-looking plants and flowers. Personnel are knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. The cash register area is barely large enough to accommodate a cart (no wiggle room), which is one of two gripes I have. I need to give an update for this place.I bought three ready to eat chicken parm to go meals last week hoping to have a nice sandwich, i also bought some rolls to go with it . the rolls were good, however the chicken was way overcooked.yuck. It was too late to bring back, very tough and whomever was cooking that day did not know how to cook the chicken properly. I will never buy these again.Owners please train your staff to cook chicken properly. read more
