Went for lunch today I'm almost positive my family and I were the first table there. First thing I noticed when I walked in how loud the music was. I know places want the atmosphere to be right for customers but it was 1230pm and it was like a dance club in there. We get seated I'm already super excited being Nigerian there aren't many African restaurants where I live. I got the Okra Soup with beef and Jollof rice (Nigerian style). As a person that is not accustomed to Nigerian dishes, I know I have reached the cusp of authenticity. I have ventured into kitchens that serve Ethiopian Sudanese Ghanaian as well as Ugandan cuisine! But today was a first trying the soft, fluffy, warm but intentionally flat tasting fufu. The people of Nigeria enjoy using fufu with almost every meal for its starch and as a polite way to eat with your hands. To me To me, Ike's embodies the truest experience for your first dinner of fufu with light soup, Jollof Rice, plantain, peanut soup, fried tilapia, & chicken Suya. I am an incredibly adventurous eater, but with so many of the menu items containing the shrimp powder I was not able to try everything. I really wanted to experience the egusi, but I can't because of the Ingredients require shrimp powder. Be sure to ask when coming in for your first time because they let you sample the soups such as peanut, okra, and others. Some contain peanuts and shrimp so you really have to be honest with the servers that are educating you about the menu. I had the absolute pleasure and fun experience while being waited on by the beautiful & vibrant Victoria. She is so knowledgeable, fun, enthusiastic, and an absolute ambassador of her culture and love for her people. I had such a warm hearted conversation with her about dishes to her and her family. I also sampled the palm wine which is such an experience! I loved my plantains and how crispy they were while most are served, greasy and mushy, mine were delectable and hot! The soup was so distinct, unique, tasty, and robust! I love that it is a spicy soup, but it doesn't make you full yet it enhances the flavor of the food. I did enjoy trying the chicken with the fu fu dipping in the light soup. There were so many options on the menu but I only tried eight. I haven't been to Ike's in a few years. It was nice to see they were still up and running during covid. I was able to call ahead of time and put in my order. Location: They are located inside of a plaza so parking is ample. Customer service: Pat I believe her name was answered the phone and was sooooo awesome! I haven't talked to someone who was excited about serving a customer In so long it was definitely refreshing! She knew her menu, gave great suggestions, and I knew what to expect when I arrived. Atmosphere: this place is usually packed with Caribbean's and African decent so if you enjoy good music and good food this is your place. However, due to covid - it appeared that only the outside was available for eating. The staff had one masks, sanitizer was around and I believe some had on gloves so they were taking the proper safety precautions for business and I appreciated it! Food is fairly priced and I enjoy eating. Because of the experience I would say definitely a 5 star. We went for Father's Day and while there was a line out the door for takeout orders, we were seated immediately in the dinner room. Our server was friendly and helpful. We started with two orders of Ike's Special Beef Suya. Delicious! The Suya pepper was provided on the side so you could control how much spice you were adding to your meat. I ordered the Jollof Rice Combo Plate. It comes with meat of your choice and three pieces of fried plantain (Dodo). I chose Chicken for my meat option and it was delicious! Two large pieces of Chicken covered with red stew. Additionally, the Jollof Rice was excellent! You can never go wrong with Nigerian Jollof! Someone else in my party order the Chicken Shawarmas. Everyone else in our party had finished eating by the time it arrived. Aside from that, everything was delicious and came out very quickly! It was somewhat bland compared to my favorite peanut butter, but maybe I'm biased. If you're looking for something full of flavor and very feeling, I suggest the peanut butter soup. It's like a savory soup with a hint of peanut butter flavor. My boyfriend loves their Cassava Leaf and Okra soup. I've tried the okra soup, and it's pretty good. I just can't do the slime, lol. Simply put, I'm a spice wimp! West African food is not a category I'm familiar with but when asking my daughter where she wanted to go for a special Mother's Day Daddy/Daughter Date, Ike's Café is where we landed. The hostess who seated us offered to bring samples of a few different dishes when she learned it was our first time visiting the restaurant, which was incredibly helpful. She was so amazing and thoughtful, even adjusting the table to be more comfortable for the bun my daughter has in the oven. [ THE FOOD ] As I've aged, I've been open to more spiciness and have been training my tongue to turn up the heat. But Ike's proved I've got a long way to go because the spice level here is way above my weight class! I could barely handle a sample of their PEANUT SOUP and CASSAVA SOUP, which were both very flavorful... but packed a punch. My daughter on the other hand, who loves spicy foods was in heaven with all the samples and raved about her bowl of OKRA SOUP. As for me, I played it safe and ordered the CHICKEN WING and BEEF SUYA appetizers as my meal. Each was seasoned to absolute mouthwatering, taste bud exploding perfection (5++ STARS) and my only disappointment was there was not more of each. I would not mind making a meal of these two items every visit along with a side of their JOLLOF RICE and Cassava Leaf or Peanut Soup. Despite the spiciness of those soups, I really, really enjoyed the unique taste. [ SERVICE / ATMOSPHERE ] The team here was great and from the moment we walked in we felt welcomed. I really appreciated how patient they were with us not knowing many of the items on the menu and needing more explanation than the average customer. I insisted on regular menus instead of the online menu and I'm happy I did because the pictures on the printed menu really helped. The interior was very clean, their to-go-orders team was operating at high efficiency, and the interior décor actually reminded me of a hotel I stayed at in Kenya a few years ago. SIDE NOTE: The printed menu also has flags next to certain dishes indicating the African country to which it was derived. The bottom of the menu has a legend with the name of that flags country and the back of the menu has a full map of Africa. I thought that was really very cool because despite being "African-American", I am totally unfamiliar with the food/culture from the motherland, so it felt educational. [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] If I were better able to handle spicy foods, this would be my new favorite restaurant. I enjoyed the flavor of most every item I tried even though they made my eyes water and nose run... LOL! The only item I sampled but did not enjoy was the Bitter Leaf Soup, which truly lives up to its name. There are still a number of items I want to try on the menu such as the Chicken Suya, Lamb Suya, Meat Pie, Catfish Pepper Soup, Coconut Shrimp, Jollof Rice with Goat and for dessert the Puff Puff (an African donut w/powdered sugar). Delicious food like this encourages me to continue to expand my spice tolerance because the flavor here is undeniably good. Definitely a taste of home. I was craving this for over a week and was looking forward to devouring! The beef suya was well seasoned and juicy. That suya was strong and spicy (you've been warned). The kelewele was sweet and not too soft. The waakye was hittin the way it's supposed to. I shared the first two and ate the last all by myself. Yes I am proud! I got a ginger beer as my drink, it was pretty good. ‼A few things to mention is that even though it's "home food" it's not actually the same as if you were to go to Ghana or Nigeria. I'm not from west Africa, I'm from central Africa and am a bit of a picky eater, the food was really good, I have gone back for takeout already to get the same things so I recommend! I sat at the bar, bartender made me a delicious mango drink, I think it was a margarita (I forgot which) but service was good and they were playing afrobeats and SA house music in the background. To be quite honest, the inside of the restaurant has a hole-in-the-wall type of look, the servers and hostesses have a very disheveled uniform but MANNNN OH MANNNN their food be smackin!!!! Ok so Here's the thing, been here before years in the past wayyyyy before the pandemic and sat outdoors with friends before but it's been a while, so things are different. Went with my sister for a bday celebration just something simple to do, sit at the bar order some apps and vibe. First off upon entering there is no such host to greet you, we politely just headed to the bar and found ourselves some seats. There is absolutely no menu present (after covid may be a cause), but no one even suggested that we use our phones to scan the menu.... any who after waiting and waiting with no server or bartender attending to us we finally saw to scan the menu. Mind you we are at the bar! not even a drink speciality menu to chose from.... so my sister say she normally gets the happy hour specials (whatever that is). we i ordered from the top of my head tequila sunrise (sub orange for pineapple).... it was good maybe a little too good (like no alcohol was in it). I'm saddened to be writing this but i felt like i had to share. But i do want to note that my order was via doordash. I have had Ike's once before and it was just okay. The Ike's in Ghana, though is amazing! I ordered fried yam via doordash today and it was HORRIBLE (see attached photo). That honestly should have never been served. The yam is old (hence the black spots). If you know Ghanaian fried yam then you know this is horrible. Suya came with spice on the side vs on it so they sent plain suya and while the spice is supposed to be spicy it shouldn't be hot. The spice on the side was essentially just cayenne pepper. I wanted pepper sauce on the side, because I like my food extra spicy, & she kept saying that's not possible & I'm asking why? And she didn't want to say why, so she finally admits they've been out of pepper sauce since yesterday, so I asked to order a cocktail on the menu so I can think about what I want, and she said "I don't make drinks". So I asked if someone was on duty to make 'em? And she said I don't know, wait. So a guy (the owner I believe) called her over & told her she was being kinda rude to us & giving her customer service pointer (way to go sir!) so she started being a little more compassionate/nice (even gave me a slice of cake for my birthday at the end of my meal), but by then I was ready to try the food & see if it was worth the hassle! And I still gave her a $18 tip despite the treatment because I'm Liberian, but I would not return based off of the treatment we received in the beginning. Food: the peanut butter soup was good, the puff puff was soft but tasty, my drink was ok, the red gravy with the white rice was alright, the substitute pepper sauce had too much ginger, the jollof rice was good, but the chicken suya came out after all our other food did because she forgot it, but when she brought it out after a few minutes, it tasted so dry & nasty!
