Granaio Italian Restaurant was the perfect venue for the April '26 monthly meeting for our Car Club! We reserved the restaurant for 2 hours on the weekend during the Tulip festival. Our servers Stephanie and Elizabeth were so helpful, they made the whole experience so stress-free! We got to the restaurant an hour early to setup the Auxiliary meeting room we reserved for our club meeting. After talking with the servers, it was decided that it may not be big enough for a group of our size. The servers graciously offered to close off the main portion of the restaurant instead, and redirect the normal patrons to the Auxiliary meeting room. This worked excellent, and there was plenty of space for our club to meet! The servers also helped up re-arrange the tables to suit our needs, and we had plenty of space. The menus worked great, and the food was absolutely delicious. Additionally, we had one or two guests who had dietary restrictions, and the servers were more than accommodating to them. Our club meeting also went very well! The restaurant was quiet and we had no trouble hearing our president and officers make announcements. The servers very discreetly gathered up the checks, and nobody had any complaints about things not being processed properly. Overall, the officers commented about how accommodating the restaurant was and how the servers went out of their way to make our meeting work well. And it did - we one of the highest turnouts of any non-holiday meeting despite the rain. Thanks so much for the great experience. We will be back next year! read more

We visited the restaurant on a Thursday evening and had 2 sets of Sunset special menu: veal Marsala and ravioli of the day (beef). The ravioli is okay. A little bit too salty to my taste. The veal Marsala have no taste or aroma of Marsala at all. This is one of our favorite dishes and we have not had this kind of experience anywhere else. To be honest, we could call "veal with sauce" rather than "veal Marsala". This is the reason I put which day we visited. Because I know some restaurants have different chef on specific days. The veal could be more tender. The inside is very nice though and it would be a good place for a date, etc. The service is also excellence. Just the food that is below expectations. We celebrated our one-year anniversary here with my wife, and since it was also Mother's Day, the restaurant was extremely busy. Luckily, I booked a table a week in advance, though there was still a short wait before being seated. We started with the meatballs and house salad--the meatballs were especially flavorful and well seasoned. For mains, the spaghetti carbonara with added spicy sausage was excellent, and the portion size was huge. I ordered the gnocchi gorgonzola, which unfortunately leaned too salty and heavy for my taste. The homemade bread was a nice touch and added to the cozy, home-style feel of the restaurant. Came in for lunch with my mom and daughter, and it genuinely felt like they did not give a flying fuck about us. There were only THREE tables, yet we waited almost an hour for our food, never got drink refills, and had to ask what was taking so long. We were told it was because we ordered a Caprese salad and our food was being "coursed out differently." With three tables?? By the time our food came, we just packed it to go. We had a rehearsal dinner so a private event with a buffet. I'll start with the space which was very cute and perfect size for a group of around 45 people in our own room. I will say it could have been a group of our size but service seemed a little frazzled/slow. I was only able to get 2 drinks during our multi-hour dinner (one of which I had to flag down for). Now for the food- the bread was REALLY good! Along with the bruschetta. The pasta was good too but not my favorite- we had a Gorgonzola gnocchi and a salmon red sauce pasta. We had leftovers and my husband said he dreamed about the salmon red sauce pasta all day. There was also chicken picatta which I really liked- it was super thin but juicy. For dessert- tiramisu. My daughter (2) obviously cannot have that because of the caffeine and they were super sweet to bring her out vanilla ice cream. Overall I don't think I would return but it served its purpose for the special event and I think it's great for that reason! read more

Addendum: To his credit, the manager, Bill, (see his comment below) heard us out and did comp the bill. We left unsatisfied, but tipped well and apologized to our server, who was composed and gracious. I hope Bill did not turn his ire upon her. We had high hopes for a good dinner (decent Italian is, increasingly, hard to find here) not a free meal. What we got was trouble and bellyaches the next day. So be careful not to be too honest with Bill. Retribution is swift, and he will accuse you of being a bully and abusing his staff, which we did not do. We were simply honest about the food. Oh and Bill? I'm an ex sous, and kitchen manager, and grew up in an Italian family. Were I to "slap on an apron" I would give you exactly what I gave you: an honest assessment. Four courses of bad food is still just bad food. Put what you fed us in front of those restaurant judges handing out your touted awards, and see what you win. That said: I like you. You've got the right chutzpah. Now use it to fight for better quality on the table, and not to engage snarky nobodies like me. Edited review: The service staff is exceptional. The building is funky and cool; those are the two stars. Not much actual Italian anything here. From the poor quality oil and balsamic on the table for the "bread" (which bears no resemblance to Italian style bread at all) to the spumoni ice cream that tastes powerfully of food coloring and contains no pistachio nut meats or cherries, the food here is apparently an exercise in turning cheap, low-quality ingredients into bland versions of supposedly Italian style dishes. The pattern holds for anything you order here, except maybe the bruschetta. The salad dressing. The cheese. All of it is one big culinary pulled punch. Spaghetti was mushy, mealy, and over-sauced with ketchup-y, "Chef Boyardee" flavors, providing a goopy nest for over-worked (but well seasoned) meatballs. Shrimp linguine was pasty, bland, oily and the mushrooms were canned-tasting. Shrimp, though dinky, were perfectly cooked. But oi, that pasta... Why the food yuck? Maybe they are in over their head, and they're betting they can increase income by cutting food costs - in this case, by serving lower-quality food, and counting on their friendly staff and dimly-lit eclectic ambience to charm customers, and thus pay the bills - which are likely considerable in a venue this size. I've seen it before. Casa Bonita, Alligator Soul, et al. Italian food is about highlighting and carefully preparing flavorful artisan ingredients, fresh seasonal produce, quality over quantity. If you've ever had it, you can't forget it. They don't serve that here. Ver cute restaurant. They have 3 rooms, one very large, one medium (seats about 30) and a small (seats 18). We were in the small room which feels almost like a private room. Extensive menu which included "sunset specials". Sunset specials included bruschetta and dessert. I had the veal parmigiana and the wife mushroom fettuccine. Haven't eaten in person here, but we ordered to go for my mom's birthday and were absolutely blown away by the flavor and freshness of all of the dishes we got! My mom couldn't stop raving about the calamari frittiti--the breading was perfectly season and light and it wasn't at all oily which can happen easily with calamari. We got the fettuccine di mare and linguine pescatore for our mains. The bread that came with it was delicious, albeit a bit dry on the crumb but that's just a personal preference. The pasta itself had great flavor and the seafood was fresh and perfectly seasoned. Overall a great meal and made my mom's birthday that much better! This is our second time to this restaurant. Both times we have been seated swiftly, the service is exceptional and the food is great. I was hesitant to try the French onion soup, because I have had one too many in the past that made me regret it - but this restaurant has restored my optimism! It was phenomenal. We had the French onion soup, spaghetti carbonara and the special, which was a steak with risotto. The portions are large, the taste is wonderful, and served hot. It was so good the first time, we came back today to enjoy again. The building is cute, I like the layout inside. There are a couple different rooms that you could to be placed in, and all are cozy and esthetically pleasing. The building has an older charm to it, and lighting is dimmer for a more intimate setting. Javier did a fantastic job. He was knowledgeable and checked in on us frequently, but not overbearing. Drinks were good, and he brought out refills promptly. He offered to box our food for us and promoted the dessert menu, which my fiancé loves a good tiramisu, so we got that for take home. We stumbled upon Il Granaio on our way to Oak Harbor on a Saturday night. They were busy but made room for us like we were close relatives. "Sit here and have some wine." Under Tony's tutelage,we started with bruschetta which was thin sliced fresh focaccia toasted with tomatoes, onion, fresh basil, and garlic. I was taught not to mix onions and garlic but this worked well as the onion retreated and the garlic held firm. It mixed well with the Insalata Granaio, a blend of fresh greens, tasty tomatoes in January and dry crumbled cheese that added a sharp note that made the olive oil dressing the best vehicle. We followed that with Strozzapreti, house made rolled pasta, designed to hold sauce with kicky sausage that was cut in perfect sized pieces, fresh tomato sauce with shaved grana, exquisitely spiced (doesn't need pepper but we did it and would do it again) and topped it with a tiramisu that was a wonderful blend of lady finger, mascarpone, and dark chocolate. My husband made early, around 5:00 reservations for a Saturday for us. We got seated very quickly. The hostess and waitress were very friendly. The restaurant looks so cute and unique. We order the 4-course special. I asked for gluten free pasta. The waitress offered me Insalata Caprese in place of the bruschetta. It was great and I appreciated her offering. The house salads were very underwhelming, dish of iceberg lettuce a piece of cucumber, and a piece of tomato. I asked for Italian vinaigrette and it was thick like Kraft dressing. Some might like this but the salads I make at home are much more healthy and interesting. We waited a very long time for our main courses to come. Our wooden chairs were becoming very uncomfortable by this time. Our waitress apologized for the delay and asked if we wanted anything while we waited. We declined. I ordered the Pollo Clabrese Pasta as my main. I loved it and I was not disappointed at all with the GF pasta. When we were ready select our dessert options, we ask to be reminded of the dessert options, assuming she would tell us what was included with the 4-course special. My husband enjoyed his tiramisu but was surprised by the upcharge when the bill came. The Panna Cotta without the raspberry sauce (to make it GF), or the spumoni was recommended for me. I went for the Panna Cotta as I'd never tried it. This was a very bland choice for a dessert. Two hours after sitting down. We were finally complete and very sore. As I told our waiter, a waste of a baby cow. He offered to take it off the bill but I declined because I ate some of it and took the balance home to my dog. In all fairness, I only had a few bites and I should have sent it back and ordered something else. The waiter said he was surprised it was tough, but would tell the owner right away. The salad was nothing exciting, nor was the dressing. We liked the bread. I had the tiramisu for dessert. It wasn't great, lots of mascarpone, not much else going on. I have eaten here twice recently and both times were a great experience. Both servers I have interacted with were courteous, offered assistance and provided follow up. I absolutely love the feel of the interior and how it looks as though it's multiple different "areas" - like walking down a small street in Italy! I opted for the same dish both times and was very pleased with both! I got the linguine pescatore. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of seafood! I will definitely order this dish again. First time at IL GRANAIO. I liked the old building and the rustic look of the place. They have a few dining rooms. I think we were in the main. The smells coming from the kitchen were inviting. There were four of us for dinner. The two servers working the room were busy and as a result some aspects of service lacked. As an example there were inordinately long intervals between services. I had to get up and go find appetizer plates because our server was absent after asking for plates. The water situation was dismal as well but we were able to get refilled one time toward the end. The service wasn't exactly bad but just slower paced I guess. The menu was packed with Italian goodness. Lots to choose from in every variety. I ordered their filet mignon braised in red wine and on a bed of pasta with some brown mushroom sauce topped with Gorgonzola. Cooked perfectly. I couldn't eat it all. I also ordered spaghetti and meatballs to share around the table but it was mostly me picking on that. I wasn't impressed with the antipasto appetizer. It was just cold cuts and cheese with some mushroom and peppers. I've had more creative antipasto plates. Mrs Billy D had her go to Pollo Parmigiana which she could not finish. We ordered more food than we needed. Two appetizers and an extra entree but it was worth it. I haven't had a restaurant filet cooked like that in a long time. I would go get that again. There's a few versions of the filet. You cannot go wrong. There were four of us and even with the extra grub and one cocktail the bill came to $300 ish including the tip. read more

Went here with local family for a celebration this week. The space was welcoming very holiday-festive, and a nice change from the dark cold drizzle outside. We were seated right away and the server checked in on us quickly. It took us a little while to focus on ordering food but we were nicely accommodated. One of our party was looking for a festive nonalcoholic drink and the server immediately had a good recommendation. The food was tasty. I thought my Caesar salad could have used a little more garlic and lemon but that's a nitpick. I also would have appreciated maybe a bread basket refill and more frequent water refills--again, a nit. My pasta was delicious (the seafood cannelloni)--creamy without being too fatty, lots of well cooked seafood, and the right proportion of pasta to filling and sauce. You knew it was a seafood dish (vs cheese pasta dish) as the seafood was emphasized and wasn't overwhelmed by the other ingredients. Everyone around the table really enjoyed their entrees (all pasta). Portions were generous. This is certainly worth a visit should you end up in downtown Mount Vernon. read more

I love this restaurant but had a bad experience this past visit. A friend and I met up there for my birthday dinner. I ordered my favorite, the gnocchi. I usually ask for it with a regular marinara sauce instead of the Gorgonzola sauce. I ordered the same thing in December and the saucy was thick and delicious. This time it was a thin runny flavorless tomato sauce like straight out of a can. Should I have asked for a red sauce, a meat sauce, or something else? I ate a few gnocchis which were wonderful fluffy goodness as usual. Because of the bland sauce, I decided to save the rest for home where I could add some meat and spices to the sauce. My friend decided to take her entree home for later also. We had already enjoyed garlic bread, bruschetta, and soup. We asked the waitress for take out boxes and she proceeded to take our plates away. Both my friend and I agreed that we hate when they do that. We always wonder if we are getting all our leftovers. The waitress returned with our food boxed and bagged. We both checked our bags. My box was labeled "gnocci" (spelled wrong). We left and headed home: me to north of Bellingham, my friend to south of Mount Vernon. The next day I looked forward to my entree, since I didn't get to enjoy it the evening before. Imagine my disappointment when I opened my "gnocci" box to find my friend's order instead. I called her and she was upset also. Since we live so far from each other and don't plan on getting together for at least another month, we decided to freeze our meals. I am just hoping my gnocchi defrosts and reheats nicely when I do get it back. This all could have been avoided if the take out boxes were brought out to our table and filled. This sad experience won't stop me from eating there again but we will certainly double check our leftover containers in the future. read more

Fantastic food! My wife and I have gone here every Valentine's Day for the past 7 years! The Veal Saltimbocca melts in your mouth. The Chicken Parmigiana is better than your Italian Nonna's. Top that off with some spumoni and tiramisu for dessert and you are all set! Besides the food being fantastic, the service is top notch. We LOVED the food, and the waitress (Katie) was sweet and accepting. We do not eat out often but from now on when we are in Mount Vernon we will plan on eating at Il Granaio. We were there just after lunch time and Katie helped me to select the Strozzapreti Calabrese My wife ordered the Filet Mignon Sliders. (Who would go to the best Italian in the Pacific Northwest and ordered sliders?) So, I will just say, The dish I had (Strozzapreti Calabrese) was awesome! The pasta was fresh and cooked to the perfect texture, The Italian sausage had the perfect amount of spicy, complemented by a rich red sauce and red peppers and capers topped by shredded basil and parmesan. I am a big eater, and the portion was large enough that I had to take the remaining portion home. We ordered a side of marinera to dip the delicious garlic bread. Good? Great? Even better then Great? The marinara. Delicious, rich, fresh and perfectly spiced. We took the last of the side order home. So, If you are visiting Mount Vernon they are right next to the Amtrak Station or if you are visiting the Skagit County Courthouse/County Clerk etc. They are a short walk to the east. read more

I'll be returning for my birthday later this month because I had such a great experience. And then I'll bring my friend back and May as well. Loved the food, the service, the ambience. My only suggestion to the restaurant would be to update their photos of each of their rooms so that when we make our reservation, we are able to see the rooms and pick our favorite one while making the reservation.
