Birthday celebrations in my family usually involve going out to dinner. This year, I chose Il Mulino to mark the occasion to commemorate another trip around the sun. The restaurant was always in my periphery, especially in light of the fact that they have several locations. The reviews and pictures looked good, so I booked a table and off we went. Il Mulino follows the trend of other restaurants that have grown beyond their beginnings in NYC - having established locations in other hot metropolitan areas like Miami; additionally, they have spinoffs that provide a more curated dining experience, such as Il Mulino Prime. It all started here, though, at this Greenwich Village location in 1981. The restaurant is small, and the decor is somewhat dated - one can argue that adds to the charm of the restaurant, but I can also see that being a detractor from the overall aesthetic. Regardless, the space gives off old school vibes with servers in tuxes, white tablecloths, and low lighting. As soon as we were seated, we were served a number of complimentary starters - zucchini and mushrooms, chunks of parmesan and soppressata, and a bread basked with a variety of carbs. There are no real surprises on the menu - many Italian-American staples though they do have a few creative specials. The selection was pretty vast, so it's relatively easy for everyone to find something. I decided to start with soup - specifically the pasta e fagioli. This was really good - full of flavor and a good balance of broth to pasta and beans. It was also very nostalgic as my grandma used to make this all the time. For my main, I opted for pasta and went with the spaghetti vongole. I enjoyed this for the most part - the white sauce had good flavor and they were generous with the helping of clams; I appreciated that only some were in the shell they took up less room in the dish. The use of spaghetti was a choice, I think linguine would have fit better here. For dessert, I had the tiramisu which was very good; my cappuccino was too bitter, but we also got limoncello shots which finished the meal off on a positive note. Service was really good. Everyone was extremely attentive, super charismatic, and made sure the entire experience was seamless. I was surprised to find out that several of the servers were from Italy - pretty rare to see. Overall, while I enjoyed my experience at Il Mulino, I wouldn't come back here regularly. The prices are inflated in relation to the quality of food you're served - the food is good, but if anything you are paying for the experience (which I would still question whether or not that's worth it). That being said, you won't get a bad meal here, and I wouldn't be mad if I found myself here again. read more

From the moment we walked in, everyone understood the assignment. The moment we sat down, water was being poured, snti pasti being served, coats being checked. As we were enjoying our starters the server came to give us the daily specials. All sounded so amazing. Decided on pappadelle pasta, my favorite. DD went with the lobster ravioli, her favorite. Hub went with rib eye and squid ink pasta to share as well as the scallops. Scallops were amazing. The sautéed spinach was nicely seasoned. All our entrees were prepared nicely. Piping hot and balanced in flavors. All the flavors were so pure and organic that it wasn't covered up with heavy cream or soaked in butter which I find many Italian restos do. But not I'll Mulino. It reminded me of old school Italian. No gimmicks or oversized portions. Their is passion in every dish prepared. The dessert was hard to choose so our server recommended the sampler. Tiramisu cheesecake and flourless chocolate cake with raspberry notes (my favorite). Thr whipped cream and berries helped balanced out the richness which I appreciated. Although we were so stuffed we had no problem polishing off on the dessert I was choosing between this place and Carbone having tried it in HK. Different vibe. More authentic natural flavors here. I am going to start this review with BE VERY CAREFUL where you buy your gift certificates for this restaurant . My son bought my wife and I a 200$ gift card for Christmas ( it was bought on their website ) after dinner the manager said this gift is not valid for this location. No where on their website does it say that gift cards are valid at specific locations only) ( we live in New York City so it is easy for us to follow through with the necessary steps to get our money back. Very great, very authentic Italian restaurant! We went for lunch on a Sunday. They come out with a giant Parmesan wheel and give you fresh Parmesan, as well as bruschetta and fresh bread and an eggplant dish, which was a great surprise and all very delicious- all complimentary and a nice little snack. I ordered the pesto gnocchi and it was really good. The service was great, and the restaurant itself is beautiful. Would definitely recommend and would go back. read more

Enjoyed a Father's Day dinner with my daughter after a show at the Comedy Cellar. Picked this restaurant not only because it was close to the venue, but had visited their Las Vegas restaurant and had an amazing meal there. Il Mulino is small and quaint. Old styling inside but nothing that took away from the ambiance including linen tables. The service was first class, prompt and professional. My daughter enjoyed her angel hair pasta dish. I ordered the Veal Chop and was a little surprised it was served as flat as it was. I should have asked how it was prepared, my bad, but I had envisioned a thicker veal chop stuffed with mozzarella cheese. I enjoyed it but I could not taste the flavor of the meat as it was so thin. This was the best meal of our trip! The type I will dream about and fly back to NYC for!! Incredible experience- from the old school charm, to the impeccable service, to the pasta tossed table side. Amazing! Started with the best martinis. Then all sorts of goodness came out to the table- a basket full of the most delish ciabatta, focaccia, breadsticks, salami and cheese, bruschetta, and killer zucchini soaked in olive oil and spices. What a way to start the meal. Next was the burrata appetizer- the burrata gushed out creamy goodness the moment it was pierced. The entrees are huge but they do offer half orders. The half order of squid ink pasta full of perfectly cooked scallops and shrimp in a spicy olive oil sauce was the perfect size. The pasta was perfectly al dente! The osso bucco was a large tender piece of meat served with rice and the bone with a fork for the marrow! The carbonara was made the way it should be- bacon, egg, cheese- that's it! The capellini il mulino was perfect with tomato and mushrooms. We were stuffed but able to enjoy the best dessert- light pillows of flaky pastry stacked between sweet layers of cream and fruit. Came here for the first time on a date night, and it's easily one of the best local Italian spots in the city. The service was top-notch.. friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The ambiance is super romantic and cozy, perfect for a date night. The food really blew us away. The meatballs were huge and absolutely bursting with flavor. The chicken parm was cheesy and comforting in all the right ways, and the garlic spinach was the perfect side. Quaint. 18 tables. Having been here since 1975 in this demanding market, this 3rd Street icon has stood the test of time.

For an established NYC restaurant, our first time there was meh. I'm sure maybe years ago it was great, but not any more. It's disappointing because you can imagine how this restaurant might have been years ago, but it's an old relic that seems to be riding on its history and just getting by. Service, while it was nice have 3-4 people handling different tasks, seemed a bit rushed, not paying attention, like serving the correct water or at least asking first to see who was drinking still vs sparkling. The pasta was beyond Al Dente, bordering under cooked. Our Carbonara was odd, sauce was brownish and didn't taste anything like it should. The table next to us ordered it also, and at least by the looks, looked closer to what it should. Not sure what the waiter did during the final prep. Out of the 4-5 dishes that we ordered, only one was great, the Pappardelle Bolognese, but with so many great restaurants, nothing worth coming back for unless they make some major changes. read more

Il Mulino might be my new favorite Italian restaurant in NYC (or one of my favorites, at least)! Started with a bunch of complimentary small bites- amazing tomato bruschetta, fried zucchini, flavorful foccaccia (and other breads), and cheese with cured pork. My Aperol spritz was perfect, which is for some reason a rare thing nowadays (the ratios can be hard to get right). We then got fried calamari, which we definitely didn't need and was just OK. However, even lackluster calamari can't bring down this high score. For entrées, I got the red snapper livornese, and it was so awesome that I did indeed eat that entire huge slab of lightly pan fried snapper covered in tomatoes, capers, and olives. I couldn't find a pic of this in advance but I'm so, so glad I got it. My fiancé got the veal parm, and despite his best efforts, could only finish half. Very thinly pounded veal, not the best he's ever had but definitely up there. We split a side of spaghetti pomodoro, and it actually made me wish I got pasta as my entrée, it was THAT good. Perfectly cooked and the tomato sauce had chunks of fresh tomato and basil. An old school vibe staffed by older Italian men. No dress code, or so it seemed, but you probably wouldn't feel comfortable just wearing a t shirt and shorts inside. Entrées are a bit pricey but I highly recommend! I've been here a couple times and ordered completely different stuff both times, so I kind of have a feel for the place now. I'm going to give it a 4, BUT it really depends on what you order and who you get as a waiter. The food and service can be uneven. Some items are incredible (the lamb chops - worth going just for those), and some are just alright (both clam appetizers). The ratio of great-to-ordinary stuff on the menu is 50/50. If you order wrong, you're going to feel like you paid 5-star prices for average food. If you order correctly, you'll have a good time. The prices are reasonable for what you get, in my opinion. Two people can split a pasta and a main and that would probably be enough. I like that this location (the original, on 3rd St) feels like a old neighborhood restaurant, because it actually is. With all the Italian hot spots going viral - these guys consistently put out world class food and old school service. They make everyone feel like a VIP. Starting with the amuse bouches - plates of fresh bruschetta, salumi, chunks of aged parmesan, and zucchini...all high-end ingredients assembled with talented care. First course, a pasta sampler - three bites of ephemeral pastas: Fusilli pesto, lobster ravioli and pappardelle with ragu were amazing. Chicken parm pounded thin and smothered in a blend of cheeses and marinara - it was elevated yet not heavy. Halibut that Eric Ripert would emphatically approve of. Have been to most of the other popular Italian restaurants in the WV, and this one truly does stand out, if you can close your eyes at the prices. Staff is super Italian and very friendly. You need reservations and I suggest you call them in advance to get a decent time for dinner. Especially if you want to go there on the weekend. I also suggest that you dress in business attire. The interior is old and dark but that's what gives it charm and a sense of being in your Nonna's house. The food is expensive but it's high quality, large portions and delicious. So in my opinion, it's worth every penny. Everyone should treat themselves every once in a while. I love that once you are seated, they provide you with dried sausage, cheese, bruschetta, fresh bread of different kinds and warm garlic bread and zucchini. It's just like being at Nonna's house for a Sunday dinner. We come here all of the time and I always get the same special entree , Langostino with risotto because it's delicious! However, this time I tried a different entree, their lobster special and they take it out of the shell for you too. It was huge and absolutely delicious! I enjoyed every bite! As an appetizer we tried three pasta specials, we had gnocchi with braised lamb ragu, capellini with spicy shrimp, scallops, and mussels and carbonara pasta. They give you a dish with three divisions, so you can try a little bit of each pasta. They were absolutely delicious! We are never disappointed when we come here. We were too full for dessert so we just had espresso and an cappuccino freddo. There is a public parking lot down there block too...
