Last night was maybe our 4th or 5th visit to this charming bistro, but definitely not our last. I already knew the bolognese was to die for as I'd had it a couple of times before. So last night I went with the special: scallops with a sun dried tomato sauce, over spinach with pine nuts and golden raisins. It was outstanding, perfectly cooked and the blend of flavors was unique and spot on! My husband really enjoyed the pork chop cacciatore with polenta! We made our dinner reservation for a party of 3. We got to restaurant to be seated at a high top. We were not happy. We looked into restaurant to see several tables available the entire time of our stay. That was our first disappointment. As we paid our bill, still all tables available. We should have been asked if we wanted to sit at a bar table! We had our dinner and had a few pasta dishes, no pasta spoon. Had to ask for one. 2 of us were done with our dinner we were asked if we wanted a to go? We said yes, but our 3 person was not done yet, she took our plates and brought back a bag of our to go while the 3rd party was still eating! No! The food was not awful. We recently moved to the Rochester area a few months ago and I would have to say that this was my favorite meal to date. The bistro is quaint and charming. Our waitress Hannah was wonderful and extremely attentive. I was craving a nice piece of meat and ordered the strip steak. It was cooked and seasoned to perfection (topped with a mint chimichurri). A truly succulent piece of meat. My wife ordered the gnocchi. She thoroughly enjoyed the fresh tasting gnocchi and delicious sauce. It was also loaded with fresh mozzarella. First time at this restaurant and I was so impressed with the quality of their food. We started with a glass of Astoria Pinot Grigio (my new fave!) - fruit forward with a dry finish. We got the bruschetta and a caesar salad to start and they were accompanied by a basket of warm fresh bread and oil for dipping. The dressing on my salad was authentic with a heavier anchovy taste that other local spots. I sampled the ricotta gnocchi's and wish I got it for my meal. They weren't at all sticky and the ricotta and basil leaves were so flavorful! My main course was pasta with broccoli, goat cheese, grilled chicken, mushrooms and tomatoes. It was really flavorful and delivered extra hot which I appreciated in the cold winter month. The service was fantastic and the mood was light and cheery. First time visit last night and we had a wonderful meal. We started with the eggplant and polenta bites for appetizers. I didn't know what to expect from polenta bites but was intrigued. I'm so glad I ordered them - a great flavor and texture combo with the crunchy exterior giving way to pillowy soft insides. My wife raved about her eggplant. We had the Modena and Penne Gorgonzola for entrees and both were delicious. We were stuffed but had to try the desserts because everything had been so good up to that point and they didn't disappoint. Tiramisu and the cannoli were outstanding. The hostess turned out to be the owner and she was so friendly and made us feel truly welcome. She genuinely appreciated our positive feedback we gave her from the table. We owe her an apology- we mistakenly left our leftovers on the table and she was nice enough to chase after us on the street to give them to us. We will definitely return. read more

My wife and I were so happy we came across Il Posto. The food was absolutely wonderful, and the service was very warm and friendly. Like a lot of restaurants, they seemed a little short staffed in tbis post pandemic period, but they worked hard, and did not fail to deliver a wonderful dining experience. We started with the polenta bites, which were perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside but not dry, and served with just the right amount of seasoning. We also had a very nice spinach salad. For our mains, I had the veal Milanese, and my wife ordered what I felt was the standout dish of the night, which was the wild mushroom carbonara. So flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The quality of the food was high, and you could really tell that they cared and put a lot of love into their cooking. We stopped here before visiting family in the area and had a really great experience. It was a busy night and the restaurant was full but they were able to seat us outside. Our waitress was attentive and very friendly. The food was fantastic with delicious salads and polenta bites as appetizers. Cozy atmosphere but lacking in service. While the food was tasty not worth the price. We ordered the bruschetta and it came with 5 small pieces of bread most was soggy and it was $10. A $12 bottle of wine was $10 a glass. My steak salad $20 and it came with 2 small medallions of meat that were overcooked and one slice of grilled romaine. I am not very familiar with the restaurants in Canandaiqua, Yelp brought Me to Il Posto. I was immediately greeted by the owner and He found Me a chair at a two top. I was in town on business and I was alone. Once I settled in I was greeted by My waitress. One of My favorite wines was at the top of the list. I ordered a glass and she brought Me a glass in short order. I ordered a rustic spaghetti with prosciutto, peas, tomatoes and an olive oil based sauce. It was very tasty. I want to start out by saying il posto is one of the most authentic Italian restaurants I have been to. I travel to Italy often and find it difficult match here in the states. The inside of the restaurant is very quaint, romantic and charming. The perfect date spot any night of the week. I have been here a few times and have been greeted warmly by the owner every time. Enough about the ambiance, the food is what is most notable and what keeps me coming back. The flavor of every dish was on point, and genuinely impressed me. On my most recent visit, I enjoyed a modestly priced bottle of red wine (viña Maipo) which was delicious. We chose the risotto of the day which had diced ribeye, mushrooms onions and roasted peppers. For an entree - the chicken Gorgonzola which had a very complex but well balanced flavor profile. My husband and I, with another couple, unfortunately did not have a good meal at Il Posto. The restaurant, which has been under new ownership for a few years now, has certainly gone down hill. We ordered a caesar salad which was swimming in dressing. It almost looked like soup. It was not edible. The complimentary bread was so stale that it was not enjoyable. I ordered the chicken milanese which was incredibly greasy. My husband ordered the seafood special with pasta. He couldn't even get through half of the order. That says a lot because my husband never complains about food and typically eats 75%+ of his meal. He did say that we are never going back again. I recommend not wasting money at this poor restaurant and spend instead eating at Proseccos close by in Farmington. It is certainly our #1 Italian restaurant. read more

Cute Italian bistro in the heart of Canandaigua. Group of 6 with reservations for 7:30 we were seated right away. Super friendly hostess and waitress. Orders included chicken Milanese , Gnocchi, pesto pasta with shrimp, pasta with chicken and Gorgonzola, polenta bites , & a beet salad - plates were totally clean by the end of the night! Everyone loved their meal. Some of us also had a glass of wine which was a great pairing with our entrees. My group and I were in town for a race the next day so naturally we had to carbo load & hydrate. Our waitress was so good to us , kept bringing the h20 and bread. Made our first visit to Il Posto last night. We were made to feel like family from the moment we walked in the door. We had a drink at the bar and then moved to a table. The polenta bites were fantastic! We had a bottle of a local red and a couple of pasta selections. The truffle mushroom carbonara was rich and earthy and amazing. I had high expectations. First of all, very friendly service and clean. The lighting was a bit low and the tables felt a bit cramped. Although the menu is better than most in the area, we didn't find this stellar. The bread that they served was a bit stale and very salty, like a glorified dinner roll. Compare this to the chain Biaggi's bread...well no comparison. We all ordered a salad. My sister ordered the house salad and liked it. My mother and I ordered the beet salad. We were not impressed. It was a great idea, executed in an average fashion. To be amazing, the beets could have been roasted, not boiled (or canned). The vinaigrette was not stirred well bc the salad lacked acidity, until the bottom. The feta was not at ALL salty and I buy the best and freshest feta. This feta was dry, powdery, flavorless and very sparse. The boiled eggs were over-cooked as they had the characteristic green ring around the yolk. All the elements of a great salad, executed poorly. The soup was pretty good. Tomato bisque with gouda. The tiramisu was great and you could really taste the alcohol. Usually, you cannot. Overall, Il Posto was good for Canandaigua, but I think it could be better, especially because of the price. They could aim for rustic, simple and do it well, instead of fancy and so-so. We had all gone to Biaggi's and I thought I would hate it, but the salad and bread I had there was twice as good as here. The check was 81 bucks before tip for two CUPS of soup, three salads, one pasta dish (no meat), one glass of wine, two coffees, and two desserts. I can go to Macri's deli and get amazing salad, bread and soup for 10 bucks. The atmosphere isn't worth the price. read more

This place is a gem! I'm my opinion there is no other place to go in town for Italian food. It's quaint and family owned, SUPPORT those small businesses. I have had every type of dish from veal to steak to fish, and they have a different choice of risotto every week. It is always cooked perfectly. Any Italian will critique some risotto and theirs is ALWAYS perfect. The portions are great, sometimes you go out and there is enough to feed a family of 4! Il posto serves you just enough with usually a little to take home. One true surprise is their grilled Delmonico steak. It is a bit on the spicy side due to their seasoning but it is so flavorful and always cooked to the way we order it. I say it's a surprise because it isn't some fancy steakhouse but tastes like it comes from one. The music is amazing. A great mix of Italian tenors and old school Frankie Sinatra. **They also have gluten free pasta available upon request for $2 extra. I'm not gluten free but thought I'd put that out there. Really tiny intimate italian restaurant, thats easy to find with decent parking nearby. Overall I was impressed although this place certainly has its flaws. Ive heard reservations are a must, but we showed up on a tuesday eve at 630pm and there were plenty of open tables. We were greeted immediately upon entering and the hostess who I think may have been an owner was so warm and inviting the entire evening. Our waitress was young and likely new but I think she did a great job and was attentive but not annoying. As a starter we had the meatball parmesan...mmh mmh mmh..I would get this as a lunch entree. Other than being a bit salty it was so well prepared, covered in velvety cheese that stretched and never broke. For an entree, I had the chicken milanese, I LOVED it..the chicken breasts were so thin, tender, flavorful, the breading adhered perfectly. Tasted great with the overlying greens and tomatoes. The entrees typically come with a side dish of crispy potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli medly and this was delicious also. As others have said this place is pricy for what you get, so a star is lost for value which isnt there. And I tried the rigatoni..decent but NOT worth $17 by any stretch. My chicken excelled in taste but lacked in presentation..just looked weird with greens sloppily thrown on top of the breaded chicken. Also the veggie side dish had a great taste, but I wasnt expecting it to, because it looked so sloppy. Would I drive all the way here from Roch just for dinner? I want to start by saying our meals were all great. But just great meals does not make a restaurant experience. And, now on to the bad. Where to begin...I know they were busy, but our server was not attentive. We ran out of water immediately, she did not replenish our supply for the entire meal. When my husband asked what a "hanger steak" was, she could not describe it. Instead, she patted herself on the ribs and said, "this part" which we interpreted as "the flank"? (We later joked that would mean a fatty cut? - okay, we're mean but come on. You really can't describe your own food?) Then the bill came-we were two couples asking for separate checks. What a mess to try to figure out. Our server claimed she could not make it clear because "we don't have a point of sale system". We redid her addition and she had overcharged both couples. She took the checks back with no apology. When the hostess asked if everything was okay, we told her our checks were wrong and we would have been overcharged if we had not recalculated them. She laughed it off. She then said, "we don't have a point of sale system". YES, WE KNOW. I asked if they had a calculator in the back and reminded her that it was first grade arithmetic. She said they had a calculator and instead of an apology, she gave me a sneer! Lovely. We all left a little P.O.ed at the mess up and the way-over-priced drinks. From the delicious bread to the homemade pastas, this really was the perfect Italian meal. We appreciated that there were gluten free options available and that nothing was over priced. One of us ordered the filet mignon and said it was the best steak she's ever had!! The pastas were perfectly portioned and very tasty. Wow! What a dining experience! Live entertainment! Eccentric owner! Great food! Great prices! Nice cozy place. It's pretty small and when it's full it can seem a little packed but it didn't bother me. The pizza is excellent. I ordered the filet and the manager or owner came over to the table and told me next time to try the hanger steak which was significantly less than the filet which was cool. I tried it and it was great but I'm still a filet guy. The chicken Milanese is also excellent, it's one of my favorite dishes. Definitely go here! But make a reservation or get there early.
