Il Profeta is quite an experience. It's a family-run place, and the owner Claudio is showman-extraordinaire and will likely give you the history of the place and sales pitch on the menu. He'll name-drop like crazy and be sure to tell you about his famous "John Travolta" pasta (I feel silly calling it that, but I can't remember what it was actually called on the menu). And don't be surprised if you get extra tastes of things you didn't order, but he thinks you should have. It was great fun and one of our most memorable experiences in Italy. But was it really a 5-star restaurant? I'm not sure... The food was excellent (especially the tiramisu-ish dessert), and the "John Travolta" pasta was very good but really pricey for what you got. But the whole meal was such a blast that you have to think about more than just the food in describing it as a wonderful experience. read more

This is by far the best restaurant in Florence. I'm studying abroad here and have been pretty much everywhere and this is my favorite by far. Great family restaurant, best food I have had, amazing drinks and dessert. AMAZING service. This place is very nice, clean, and high quality. Very comfortable atmosphere and homie. Some friends recommended this, and it was amazing! Very personable and friendly service like you are at a small neighborhood restaurant, and the food is incredible. The husband and wife work and continue to serve and interact with the patrons. Highly recommend the 'John Travolta' pasta...and that's not a mean American joke. Story goes that he licked his plate clean when he went there. It was a simple pasta with what tastes like a tomato cream sauce (but they wouldn't exactly share what it was). It was totally worth the risk. The pasta with meat sauce was also superb. And you should save room for the Tiramisu. It is totally worth saving some space. Make reservations in advance as it was quite full, even on a Sunday evening. Not the place to go if you are in a rush for a quick meal, relax and enjoy the experience with a great bottle of wine. This is the 2nd time we have been here. Once in 2013 and again in 2016. We were greeted by the owner and his wife and we had the same server! We enjoyed amazing appetizers, steaks and the house specialty pasta with their secret sauce with a bonus: Limóncello. My family and I ate here twice in our short time in Florence. They were our best meals in Florence. The atmosphere is very warm and reflects the family nature of the restaurant. Can't remember the names of the dishes but ask for the "John travolta" pasta. Also the Mediterranean and the spinach ravioli. Had not one but two wonderful dinners during our trip to Florence. The wait staff is outstanding - full of personality and flair. We had several different items off the menu and they did not disappoint. The Travolta pasta dish is to die for - the sauce is special. The wine list was excellent (especially for us the Brunellos) and fairly priced. Our server (Napi) made both of our evenings so special along with the owners who are front and center. Outstanding food and the service was extraordinary! My son ordered the house special pasta (John Travolta) and they brought some out for the rest of us to taste! Then they brought tiramisu in addition to the desserts we ordered because "it's the house special". Have come back here every time we're in Florence (now 6 times) and it has never disappointed. Il Profeta... favorite restaurant in Florence, thank goodness it was only a block from my hotel. Probably ate here 5-6 times over 7 weeks, and each time was amazing. Is it horrible I can't even remember what I ate here, but I know it was the best thing I've ever eaten? I'm having one of those Tenacious D Tribute moments. One was some sort of baked cheese bowl of the gods. All I know is that, if you're in Florence, you need to eat here. I came here with some American colleagues while working in Florence, and have to say the recommendation was good. The restaurant is small but nicely furnished, and the service very polite. Despite a focus on meat (how not to appreciate the Fiorentina steak?) they have been very helpful and prepared a very good and abundant vegetarian dinner for one of our group. This restaurant was recommended by friends of a friend who studies abroad in Florence. It was the best meal that I had while on a 3 week tour of Europe. We were a party of 7 and had made reservations ahead of time. We were seated right away and our waiter immediately asked which language he should speak in. If I remember correctly there were at least 5 or 6 others that he spoke. He went through the menu item by item to make sure that we understood what everything was. We ordered the house wine, which was so good that we ordered two more throughout our meal. We ordered the asparagus with parmesan to start. The John Travolta pasta had been recommended to us, so three of us ordered it. When it came to the table, they brought extra dishes, so that the other women could try it. I have never had a pasta so delicious. I can't even explain what is in the sauce, but it is so good. We also ordered the pasta with truffle sauce and parmesan crust. It was very rich, but also very delicious. We tried almost all of the desserts among the 7 of us and all were fantastic. My favorite was death by chocolate, but their tiramisu is also something that can't be missed. What an extraordinary meal! read more

Studied abroad in Florence and found out about this place on my last night. Made a yelp account just to rave about this restaurant. Best food I had in Florence, Italy, or anywhere in the world. Owner was very nice and gave us a few free dishes. Menu is fully explained to you by the waiters who speak 5 languages. The service is only topped by the food. Anitpasta rustica is an absolute must. Then we got the pear ravioli and john travolta pasta, both split for two people, and they were absolutely amazing. Authentic Italian food with secret recipes passed down from generations. The tiramisu is also very good, and the chocolate fudge dessert was very rich, but perfect for a chocolate lover. read more

Came here for casual dinner with my husband. Did not make reservations and were able to score a table outside. Fantastic service, great menu. Cash only, so make sure to grab some on your way, but there is an ATM around the corner. The only thing - the waiter sold us on a particular "special pink sauce" dish that supposedly Travolta loved - well, it is empty pasta rolls with pink sauce that was incredibly disappointing, especially given the lack of any kind of stuffing and the price tag of 36E. This was the best meal I have had in many years. We were greeted at the door by the owner and treated like family. The service was exceptional. Because it was our first visit and we don't speak Italian the items on the menu were explained to us in careful detail. The owner made us feel as if we were his only customers (although the restaurant was nearly full). He was funny, personable and attentive and made us feel very comfortable. And the food...oh my gosh. Claudio is a gem. The food was good, but the prices and service were not. In a town where finding affordable and quality food is as simple as walking across the river, we were a bit annoyed by the high prices. Add to that a €3.50 cover charge per person and the 10% service fee (fees we had yet to encounter) and it canceled out the good food. My favorite restaurant in Italy! I had the chicken cacciatore back in 2005, and have never found an equal! We returned in June 2016, and our hotel concierge telephoned Il Profeta in advance, and the restaurant prepared it for me again (even though it wasn't on the menu!). Claudio (the owner) is personable, attentive, and takes great pride in his restaurant. We were only in Florence for 3 nights, but we dined at Il Profeta twice! This is probably the best place we had in Italy by far . We so happened to stumble upon it ...very close to our hotel . The service was top notch . They took us in without a reservation . Made us feel very welcomed and explained the menu patiently .The food is really divine . Appetizers were great .....try the calamari with fried artichokes. Upon our first visit to Florence in 2009, we had the pleasure of enjoying a meal at Il Profeta. Not only was the food wonderful, but the owner and his wife treated us as family. We have recommended Il Profeta to our friends ever since, and they have all thanked us for the recommendation. Last week, we once again visited Florence, and called ahead to ask Claudio if on short notice we could enjoy a lunch at the restaurant. Claudio was incredibly welcoming and gracious, and opened the door to us as honored guests. The food was as delicious as we remembered, and we truly felt welcomed once more as family. I'd rate this little gem as 6 stars if it was available. An otherwise innocuous looking hole in the wall restaurant we instantly felt like family when we walked through the door. The owner was engaging and quickly became my new best friend - he went over the expansive menu and after much deliberation we settled on the vegetarian antipasti. The truffles pasta dish was heavenly but the house special (later we learned it was called the "John Travolta") was cosmic. We were speechless as we devoured every last drop of this spectacular dish. Not like I'm the first person to think of this but that sauce needs to be bottled ..... Or maybe not.
