I went for a basic noodle dish with the egg on top andin my protein I picked was chicken. I liked it that they put the broth in a separate container for me since it was a carryout. YUM! I have been to several area restaurants serving noodle bowls, but this is by far the best in terms of quality! Others may be less expensive but are not quite as tasty or well-executed. We came in for a first visit birthday dinner with high hopes- and were not disappointed! Was expecting it to be more crowded given the time (6:30PM Sunday) but the wait was non-existent, the service was prompt and our food arrived before we finished our appetizer. An individual in our party has a food allergy, and when we asked about accommodations the staff was extremely helpful & knowledgeable. The space was cozy, the staff was friendly, and the punch was strong. The only thing I was surprised by is how casually everyone was dressed- but that's no reason to criticize! Yelp has just informed me that this place is not only new, but that it's also hot (as in neato, not temperature "hot"), as if I haven't already eaten here 5 times since it's been open. I would say it's as good as the Detroit location, but that would be a lie. It's better. Not because of differing recipes or layout or whatever, but because it's five minutes from my house. Since it's been open, I've had the chicken ramen twice, the miso ramen once, the spicy pork udon once, and the smoked salmon perderder salad (it's potato, but I pronounce it the way I want, dammit). All the noodles are solid gold, baby, but the miso may be my favorite. Anyway, I'm done using the toilet at the grocery store. So I will end this review right meow. read more

I went on a Saturday night and it was packed! But Ima still shown thru with the same quality and taste as the O.G. in Detroit! We had sum of my favorites Spicy Pork Udon, Yaki Udon(added ginger beef) and Tori Udon(changed out the Udon for rice noodles instead) all the broths were flavorful, served piping hot and satisfied our cravings for sum comfort soups, the Yaki Udon(a must try) isn't a soup but a Udon in a light creamy sauce that satisfies that craving for pasta but without heavy sauces. I'll definately will be putting this new location into my heavy rotation of favorite Ramen/Udon places! I can't wait to go back and try more of thier new menu items! read more

I've given this Ima location multiple tries in hopes I can be convinced otherwise, but I can't get past the quality of the ramen noodles. I enjoy the broth and all the different toppings that come with each bowl, but the quality of the noodles makes it very hit and miss. I'm from LA where there is an abundance of quality authentic ramen shops, and this doesn't quite make the cut it for me. The noodles are average at best and then at times they're slightly cold and still a little stiff. You could still see the folds of the noodles like in the packaging and they haven't been cooked long enough to get all the kinks out. Because of that, I do question how fresh these noodles are and can't help but conclude they aren't fresh or made in-house like Urban Ramen in Detroit does. Overall, if I'm lazy and I don't want to go all the way to Detroit for some ramen - I'd be ok with coming here. I'll just pray they cook the noodles right. I've tried all the ramen including: miso, shoyu, and spicy tori... but my go to is still the regular tori paitan ramen. They also do a great job with their eggs, the yolk is still runny. VEGAN Review: I haven't had Japanese food since going vegan. So when I saw this restaurant had vegan options, I was all over it. I had the Forest Udon and it exceeded my expectations. It was flavorful and everything was cooked correctly: broth wasn't too salty and had great umami flavor from the mushrooms, the bok choy was bright green and still had a bit of texture and the udon noodles weren't soggy. The hot tea is a delicious sachet infusion of green tea, herbs, dried fruit, crack maybe, citrus, all the good things. Would go back for just tea 10/10. Ordered the smoked salmon potato salad as an app. Fatty, smoky goodness. Next, their miso ramen, which is a vegetarian broth. They add a soft boiled egg that melts right into the broth. Comes with tofu but I also added shrimp. Tip: you can add any protein to any bowl. Excited to go back but this is going to be more of a special occasion for me. Place is clean, and the chicken wontons were delicious, but for how small they were they weren't worth $9. I got the miso ramen, the broth was very oily and thick, without much flavor, the noodles had a weird consistency, I couldn't tell if they were over cooked or undercooked, and the pork that I had added to my dish was almost like lunch meat. My boyfriend got the chicken don and said it was alright, he said it wasn't anything special. Our total came out to be $40, which was way too steep. Also the waiter we had wasn't the most pleasant. He seemed a bit impatient taking our order and was pretty rude when dropping off our food. He plopped the sauce container onto our table, and even plopped stuff of the table for the couple next to us. Wasn't sure if this is normal behavior for him, but the rest of the staff seemed nice. My nephew and I decided to try a new place, so we went to Ima in Madison Hts. We were both very pleased. We both got Spicy Tori Ramen, mine with Chicken, my nephew with roasted pork loin. The chicken looked like sliced chicken breast lunch meat, I was surprised, but it was very tasty. My nephew was very happy with his choice. He kept going for water while devouring his ramen. I was grooving on the broth, it took the chill right out of me (it's a rainy chilly day)!!! The ramen was very good, but, the broth is fabulous. I brought half of mine home. I have always wanted to try the location downtown, so I was very excited when this location opened! I had the ramen with extra egg, and the broth was fantastic! My husband loved the Udon. The spice was perfect. The jicama taco shell was so unique, and the greens on top added a nice fresh flavor to the richness of the beef. Today was my first time visiting ima, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it! Everyone I came into contact with was also so friendly and helpful, which was a plus right from the get-go. I used to travel a lot for work before I became a stay at home mom, and I feel like it's hard to find good ramen around here (in the metro Detroit area). My all-time favorite was in Japan, and my second favorite was in San Francisco, so I love that I found a great spot close to home!! I ordered the Tori Paitan Ramen after it was recommended to me by the guy that took my order (I didn't get his name). I initially chose the Shoyu, but then I asked him for his opinion, and I'm glad I went with it! The egg was perfectly cooked, soft yolk but not under or overcooked, the noodles were just chewy enough and flavorful, and the broth was so rich and delicious! The presentation was also great. When I'm having one of those #treatyoself days, and am just not feeling the two dollar package of japanese instant ramen #marutaikurobuta, I go here. I very much enjoy this location over the Detroit location. It can space more people, there are much more food options, and the ordering system is much more streamlined. Both ramen and udon choices are good, but the udon comes served in ramen broth (so it's not really true to the udon taste experience one expects). You line up to place your order, get a number, find a table, and they bring the food to you. Expect long line waits and a scramble to find tables on a weekend night. If you've been to the ima downtown, it's like that one, but on steroids. It has their typical udon selection and.. RAMEN! Come in and order at the counter, collect a number and (hopefully) seat yourself if there's an opening. Fair warning, it can be crowded at peak hours. In my time, I've had from the appetizers: Octo sunomono: cold, tangy, refreshing octopus salad. Portion size could be a bit bigger, IMO. Sake steamed clams: the broth is to die for. Clams are cooked well. Watch out for the ginger slivers, the burst of flavor is not always a welcome surprise! Steamed edamame: Amazeballs. Coated in a spicy, savory mix of chili oil, sesame oil, lemon and salt, it's very hard to not just bite into the skins! House pickle plate: Reminds me a lot of the mandatory Banchan at Korean restaurants. Kimchi and mushrooms were the standouts here. In terms of the main dishes, I've ordered or tried: Miso ramen: earthy, yummy, fragrant layers of umami and savoriness. As an aside - ALL of the ramen dishes come in very generous portions. I typically order extra noodles because I love to maximize the broth and I barely finished an order with extra noodles. Tori paitan/Spicy tori ramen: I'll lump these two together as the chicken, meaty broth of the house. The spicy tori ramen is tolerable in terms of spice, but there is unlimited chili oil and pepper flakes on the side for those seeking more. Seafood kimchi ramen: I wasn't sure how kimchi would pair with seafood here, but this turned out to be a surprisingly refreshing and acidic, yummy ramen. It reminds me very much of a Korean jjigae stew, with the acidic, fermented kimchi providing an excellent balance to generous seafood portions. Forest udon: I love udon noodles. When done right, they are a satisfying, chewy carb descended from heaven as little bits of the broth continue to leak out from every bite. This was excellent, with similar notes of earthy savoriness like the Miso ramen. Unagi-don: Eel is also a favorite of mine. Unfortunately, because it tends to be pricier I tend to steer clear of eel at most restaurants as the price almost never justifies the portion and you're left hungry and wanting. The eel here unfortunately falls into that trap. It's done well, and balances very well with the fresh vegetables and simplicity of the rice but I really wish I had more eel. Overall, Ima here in Madison Heights is a solid, filling meal at a good price point. Portions are on point (unless as noted above with the eel) and staff is quick to help whether it is to guide a confused newbie or locate the elusive free table during peak hours. It's not the BEST ramen around Detroit, but it's a solid contender for good, consistent ramen and food that will have me coming back when the ever-present specter of indecision sets in among me and my friends. read more

Stopped by here to check out the new place. I've heard good things from several friends. Ordered the Shoyu chicken ramen. I was disappointed with the noodles. The noodles were not handmade, instead we got something akin to the instant ramen packs you can get for .30 cents at the grocer. Vegetables were squishy and soggy, didn't taste fresh, and the chicken was really soft and mealy. I've should've known it wasn't the best pick for a ramen shop. It's in the heart of Madison heights and not a single other Asian insight! The upsides were that the broth was rich, and tasty! Service staff was really nice!
