I'll try to keep this short and sweet, but this place has so much going for it that I don't want to miss anything. First, the location is exceptional -- right near Penn Station. Seating is limited, and if you want to sit, you must order off the menu. That makes perfect sense given the sky-high cost per square foot in this neighborhood. The menu is impressively eclectic and interesting, with Manhattan prices -- expect to pay around $30 per person. But here's the best part: the food absolutely delivers. The quality, presentation, creativity, and skill are all A++. I highly recommend the ricotta toast with fig -- it's simply outstanding. Their barista is also very skilled (see pics). I wasn't sure there would be table service based on photos and reviews I spied previously, but yes-there is. The owner was running the show and he has a lovely Australian accent. The menu is not overwhelming and there are enough options for whatever you might want. It's not a huge space and can get a little tight...so maybe don't bring a pile of luggage with you. We were at the Javits Center for an event and wanted to find a spot for brunch afterwards. We got here around 1:45ish on a Saturday, we waited in line for a short amount of time but they got us seated quickly. We sat outside and enjoyed the weather. My friend and I split the French Toast and Griddled Cheese Toastie. Our other friend ordered the Shakshuka for herself and the Whipped Ricotta Toast for the table. Each item was great, the whipped ricotta was great and well done. I enjoyed the toastie, the addition of the fig jam and za'atar really elevated the dish and gave it a great flavor. As a big French Toast fan I was not disappointed with this dish. It was well made and the use of whipped mascarpone was great. Overall a great spot that I have already recommended to others. I think the flavor could have a bit more variety, comparing to some other shakshukas I've had in other cities, but the eggs were surely boiled to the perfect temperature & texture. Avocado on the side was very fresh. Iced latte was, uhh, iced latte. The taste of the beans were on the bitter side, but it somewhat tasted watery; bitter and watery made kind of a weird combo. If you really do want to order coffee here, I'd recommend hot coffee instead of anything iced. The food price was very decent for the taste. I think coffees were overpriced for the quality. We saw a line form while we were eating, but arrived with a group of 4 around 9am on a Sunday and were seated right away. Very cute, minimal and modern atmosphere and decor. We were greeted at entry and thanked at exit multiple times. My group got a range of items. The poached eggs in the shakshuka were cooked perfectly. I ordered the eggplant katsu sandwich, and was very pleased with how crispy the eggplant was! Their cold brew was very dark and concentrated, which is not my preference but my partner was happy with it, especially because the serving is pretty small (same size cup as the iced latte pictured in this post). I came here for the first time on a Monday morning. There was a line outside and a bit of a wait. I was finishing up a coffee and was told I had to finish it before I went in- which was fine. It was just odd as the coffee was almost done and I had at least 15 mins until getting seated. I got the shashuka which was okay. Also got the chai which was your average chai made with a syrup. The dishes were small but came with sourdough bread. We asked for a slice of lemon and also asked for butter. We were charged for both butter and lemon. As someone in the service industry, I can understand being busy and trying to turn tables can be difficult in such a small space with lines waiting outside to be seated, but the constant checking on by wait staff gave the impression that we were being hurried out of the restaurant while we were enjoying our food and drinks. I ordered the 'eggs bene', while the presentation and plating was nice, the flavor left a lot to be desired. I expected poached eggs with a Benedict, but instead I was served nearly-hard boiled eggs on sourdough toast with cold ham. While the hollandaise sauce provided the only source of salt and flavor on the plate, the portion I was served was very thick and curdled, and was overall unpleasant for a 20 dollar dish. Overall, In Common is a nice, cozy spot for a good coffee in the morning if you're in the area, but if your policy only allows seating for food orders, I'd expect something a bit more satisfying. read more

And while there was a bit of a wait, don't let that deter you, it's more than worth it. The interior ambiance is cozy yet modern, with thoughtful details that make you feel right at home. I came with a group of friends, and we began our brunch with a round of drinks: chamomile tea and chai lattes (both iced and hot) each one was perfectly brewed and full of flavor. From there, we basically sampled the entire menu, and I have zero regrets. Every dish was crafted with care and packed with flavor. Highlights included the avocado toast, the shakshuka, the Bene, French toast, and the scrambled eggs, each plate better than the last. I wrapped it all up with a refreshing green tea that was the perfect end to the meal. If I lived in NYC, In Common would 1000% be my go-to cafe. Do not go here if you have any dietary restrictions. I'm allergic to eggs and want to get the breakfast sandwich with out egg. The server said absolutely not and that they don't allow any restrictions. I then tried to order three sides and she said absolutely not again that each person needs to order a main meal. Even though all my sides would equal a higher amount than one of the main courses. She then said I had to order berries and cream or granola...even though I don't like sweets. This is absolutely Ridiculous and I will never come back to the restaurant again. How can I not order a sandwich which cost $15 dollars without basically the sandwich ..the egg that I'm allergic too. Strolling down to the Garment District from Midtown, my stomach grumbled, so we stopped in at In Common NYC. A bright, small space, it's the perfect mix between a coffee shop and a cafe. We got the avocado toast with a soft boiled egg, soft scrambled eggs, and a black coffee. As we waited, we watched people do crosswords, gossip with their lunchmates, helped a tourist family take a photo. A few sips of coffee, and then the food arrived. Yumm! These folks know how to cook and egg, that's for sure. The sourdough toast with the scrambled eggs were perfect. And the avocados were perfectly ripe. A refill of coffee, but no room for dessert.
