I have eaten many a Cronut and muffins but today was my first taste of a Cruffin. I chose the vanilla cruffin at Heritage Grand Bakery this morning. Despite having eaten a small breakfast, I still felt hungry. As I was going to work for the day and passed by this bakery I decided to try it. It's often difficult for me to pass by a bakery when the pastries are in full view. Of course I could have averted my head but I am not a saint. When I cut the cruffin it had vanilla cream inside. The flavor was muted and next time I should try the pistachio cruffin. The display case was brimming with all kinds of viennoiseries and pastries that definitely look tempting. I love how it's right next the New York Public Library. Came in for a pistachio croissant and a raspberry macaroon. The macaroon was so soft and fluffy, best I've had. Pistachio croissant was alright, not the worst but not the best either. They had a variety of pastries and a little section in the back where you could sit and eat. Service was good I was in and out. New Yorkers have bakery radar. When I first came here the place was so busy you couldn't get in and it was spectacular. I ate there every morning. Now? Sigh. In the same bakery class as Maman, but an Acapulco low tide cliff dive in quality. I had great kouign amann and a croissant the first visit. Return visit found doughy, heavy uninspired croissants! Did the inspired owners sell? Quel dommage! Now it's just another humdrum high-priced loveless bakery, treading on past glory. Coffee is excellent. Lots of pour overs and other things that should be enjoyed, if it weren't for the cramped stool seating and no hooks under their counters. It deflates the nature of your morning enjoyment. The breads were fresh and the pastries were crafted very well and incredibly tasty.. There are some areas for being seated changing and enjoy the offerings right there in the store.. This bakery has been on my list of spots to try since I've walked past it many times and it usually seems pretty busy. I'd give it an another shot if I was in the area and try a couple different pastries. Located on 40th Street across the street from the south edge of Bryant Park, it's been around for a few years and serves a variety of breads, pastries, coffee and tea drinks, chilled take away foods like salads and sandwiches. On a frigid day with negative windchill, many other stores were closing up early and a fair number of passers by flocked inside here to escape the arctic temps, looking for a warm drink or treat. Upon entering the staff were quick to acknowledge most visitors, and asked if I needed help or knew what I wanted to order. I needed a few minutes to decide so let some other customers go first. I thought about the kouign amman or pistachio cruffin which both looked good and had positive reviews though finally went with the apple tart $5.50. Staff asked if I'd like it warmed up which I appreciated, after toasting in the oven it was hot and the pastry shell was lightly crispy on top. I do wish there was a bit more pastry as the part under the apples was quite thin, and the apples were also cut quite thinly. For those ordering drinks, they carry a couple alt milks, I believe almond and oat if I recall correctly for an extra surcharge. Their chai is from a premade concentrate (it's hard to find a real one unless you go to a proper chai bar). Seating is a handful maybe 5-6 seats along the back of the bakery, pretty tight, so not a place to linger long. Didn't notice a bathroom. read more

I got several of the bakery items from here but unfortunately none of them were really good. It was either an item had too much sugar while another one had no sugar, & one was tasteless and one had too many things going on that ruined the pastry...I would pass on this place. read more

We stopped by Heritage Bakery, just outside the New York Public Library, and I wish I could have tried one of everything behind the counter. We picked up a raspberry croissant, pain au chocolat, an olive fougasse breadstick, and a latte, and everything was absolutely delicious. The pastries were flaky, fresh, and full of flavor, and the latte was exactly what I was hoping for--smooth, cozy, and the perfect companion to a morning stroll through the city. The line moved quickly, the staff were efficient, and the whole bakery smelled like butter and heaven. Seating was a bit tight, but we managed to squeeze in, and honestly, that was the only small downside. I would say this was a 5 star experience from the moment we walked in, all the way to the bathrooms and then finally walking out. We were well taken care of and it was a very nice dining experience. We came here for dinner. Very elegant but cozy and in general an enjoyable vibe. My brothers enjoyed the grilled octopus and my sister and I loved the calamari. So this might just be me but it was a lot of show and not a ton of substance. I did enjoy it and I'm not going to go lower than 3 stars for this one but it wasn't over the top exceptional in my opinion. I got a raspberry macaron which was really quite yummy and a raspberry croissant and that I think is where thy lost me. The entire inside of the croissant was basically just raspberry jelly and it was honestly horrible. The service really wasn't awesome they seemed annoyed when anyone not just my party asked questions even though there really wasn't anyone in there. The place itself though was super cute! My partner and I came in here because the pastries look SO GOOD. The queue is pretty fast moving once you enter. We got multiple things: pistachio cronut, praline bliss chocolate cake, pistachio financier, hot chocolate and a drip coffee. The pastry and the baked goods very really good. I'd rank these (1) praline bliss, (2) cronut and (3) financier. The drinks on the other hand were bad. The hot chocolate was not hot and extremely sweet. It tasted like cheap cocoa mix. I'm keen to find great bakeries wherever I go, so this was a very welcome find only a few blocks from my hotel. So nice I went here twice, in fact. The pastries really are to die for. They're so luscious. I had one of their pistachio cruffins, a quiche, some of their cheese sticks, and the pastry with chocolate and custard (sorry, I've forgotten the name.) All of it was delicious. This bakery definitely got the aesthetics and customer service right. Upon entry, we were greeted with an enthusiastic staff member. Who made sure to inquire about if I wanted anything more after choosing one pastry after the other, to which I said yes each time, until I said, "if you continue to ask, I will continue to buy so, I am all set...lol." I made sure to add to their tip jar! Unfortunately for me, most of the pastries looked better than they tasted, in my opinion. The lemon poppyseed muffin was lacking on the combination of lemon zest and the poppyseed flavor. It just tasted like a regular muffin with poppyseed. The Kugelhopf only had one raisin in the whole pastry. A Traditional Gugelhupf always contains some dried fruit, usually raisins, and sometimes other dried fruits. So it felt like just eating dough. Finally, the blueberry muffin, also left more to be desired and that's strange for something that is a staple. I think the cuteness of the venue and my desire to have amazing flavor unfold in my mouth was just over showered by the pastries just being blah except for the Praline Bliss, which definitely lived up to its name. It was milk chocolate and hazelnut goodness. Although, this was my first impression, I did see that a Tea Service is "coming soon" so may consider trying that out. read more

Pastries are good, coffee is not. Pistachio cruffin 10/10 - I love all things pistachio. Flaky on the outside, pistachio cream goodness on the inside. Definitely a must for any nut lover. Chocolate chip walnut 8/10 - I'm more of a soft cookie gal. This cookie is a bit on the harder side. Still tasty but will try a different one next time for more gooeyness. Coffee 0/10 - You would think they would invest more in their coffee because isn't that what you pair with pastries? Their cafe au lait straight up tasted like milky burnt water. After a quick walk around Bryant Park, I had to go to Blue Bottle next door to get real coffee. I came with a party of 5 and ordered the mezze platter which was really delicious but a small portion for all of us to share. The dips in the platter were delicious and the bread was warm and freshly baked but it was a nice amount for lunch. I was torn between 2 salads and the waiter was very sure in his decision when I asked his opinion! I went with his suggestion- mixed greens, tomatoes, avocado, red onion with a nice (but heavy handed) vinaigrette and added grilled shrimp (there were 5 of them). I'd come back and definitely try their baked goods and if someone else paid, probably their food again. It's typical pricing for a midtown sit down lunch but smaller portions for sure. read more

Stopped in for a cold beverage... walked out with pure gold!!! What a terrific place to commit carboicide. Everything looked fresh, crispy, and delicious; from the variety of croissants, to the cookies, and to the bread that was just staring me in the face. This morning, I started the day with a nice cold Arnold Palmer and a cumin cheese stick... yum! I'm also going to throw in the fact that my server was super nice, sociable, and a pleasure to meet. The bakery is absolutely charming and smells amazing but it's best that you take your baked goods and beverages to go and find a seat across the street at Bryant Park or the library as it can get quite busy and noisy. Looking for a spot to grab a quick breakfast after visiting the Summit at One Vanderbilt, I stopped at Heritage after seeing all the amazing looking pastries through their window. Plenty of stuff to choose from, my son and I got the apple crumble danish, plie au chocolat, chocolate eclair, and a matcha tea latte.
