As a teacher, I frequently take my students on Community-Based Instruction (CBI) outings to help them build real-world skills. Today we visited the In-N-Out Burger on Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa, and it was one of the best CBI experiences we've ever had. The young man working the cash register was absolutely exceptional. He was incredibly patient, allowing each of my students the time they needed to pay for their own meals without ever making them feel rushed. He treated every student with kindness, respect, and genuine courtesy, making each one feel valued. His professionalism, compassion, and positive attitude made all the difference. Employees like him don't just provide great customer service--they create meaningful experiences that help students build confidence and independence. The food was great, as always, but the outstanding customer service is what made this visit unforgettable. I'm only giving two stars because I love in n out and the cashier was actually decent to me. Otherwise, this was the most disorganized drive-thru experience I've ever had. I'd never been to this location and accidentally entered the line the wrong way. There were at least five employees standing around outside, but not one of them bothered to stop me or point me in the right direction. I sat in line for 25 minutes, and when I finally got to the speaker, nobody answered. Before I reached the window, I flagged down an employee taking orders behind me and explained I still needed to order. The woman behind me was screaming 'She cut the line' in hysterics so the told me I'd have to wait for the cars in front of me to clear out and then go all the way to the back of the line to start over. All while this was happening, the woman in the car behind me was losing her mind and screaming at me. It was a complete mess and the staff standing outside just watched it happen. Luckily, the cashier actually had some common sense, realized I was just confused by the layout, and let me order. In-N-Out, you need to do better. If the parking lot is this confusing, have your people actually direct traffic instead of just standing there while customers get harassed by other customers. read more

Food is standard in-n-out hamburger and fries. It was cheap and delicious. The real problem here is the parking and line situation. Parking is an atrocity as cars occupy both traffic flow lanes illegally to turn into the drive thru. The entire parking lot is already small and cramped as it is. The occupation of the reverse traffic means the entire traffic flow is condensed into a T shape in a tiny parking lot. There's another exit that is perpendicular to the drive thru lines except drivers block it off regardless of the floor sign saying DO NOT BLOCK. read more

I live closer to the one located a few steps away from South Coast Plaza, however, the In-N-Out on Harbor is MUCH better. MUCH CLEANER, better service, and somehow the food comes out warmer. A couple of extra miles is well worth the trip! read more

It's Tuesday at 4 PM and we just witnessed a strange phenomenon at this In-N-Out location on Harbor (right off the 405). As we are leaving from dining in, there were NO cars in the drive through line. I don't think I even witnessed something like this ever happening. All kidding aside, In-N-Out is our favorite fast food place for burgers. I'm not too keen on their fries, however to me, they taste better light well or well done. I haven't tried this yet, but someone recommended ordering a cheeseburger with cold, not melted, cheese since it supposedly brings out more of the cheese flavor. However, tax here is 7.75% (Carson it's 10.5%). Feb '26: - Both lemon boxes were out. - Super crowded. - Cramped, slow parking lot. + Conveniently located right by the 405. Dec '24: Like all In-N-Outs, enjoyed the yummy, cheap, but somewhat unhealthy food here. Polite, helpful staff. Crowded, so the food takes a while to come out. Location Comparison * Harbor Boulevard (Preferred): This is the better spot if you want to bring the whole family to sit down. They prioritize indoor seating more than the drive-through, and there is tons of parking available. This location also offers four handicap spots. * 19th Street: This location has no indoor seating--it is strictly outdoor with a dual drive-through setup. Because of that, they tend to prioritize drive-through orders over walk-ins, and there aren't many places to sit. It only has two handicap spots. Safety & Atmosphere * 19th Street Caution: The 19th Street location is in a slightly more "sketchy" area with a higher homeless population. If you are coming here alone at night, just be a bit more cautious. * Late Night: While Harbor is better for the family, the 19th Street spot is a decent option if it's really late and you just need to stop for a quick bite. Final Verdict: You can't go wrong with the food at either place, but for a comfortable family meal, the Harbor Boulevard location is the winner. read more

We were served completely RAW french fries tonite. See the pic. Order placed 3/28/26 at 12:50am. It was too late for us to turn around when we realized the fries were raw and cold. We were wondering why there were hardly any cars in line, very few customers inside and no employee taking orders outside. As So Cal natives, we have been going to In n Out for ages and have never seen them this slow on a Fri nite. Now we know why. Quality has gone down the drain. They also missed the extra lettuce on one burger even though the order taker on the intercom repeated it. It has also been a few months since we ate at In n Out due to poor burger quality last time. We opted to order inside, and the cashiers were very friendly and it was quick to order. It took about 20 minutes for our order to be called out. The cheeseburgers were hot and delicious, just as you'd expect from In-N-Out. Our fries weren't as good, as many were burnt and they served lukewarm as it seemed like they were sitting there for a while. The interior seating looks nice enough from the window but this in n out - why aren't you using the drive through? The bun is always crispy at this location and they melt the cheese just right. It's also close to chik fila and raising canes so you could get an animal style burger and then go load up on Texas toast and canes sauce.... The people who come are often from the local suburban family members, so the worst you get is roudy high schoolers. Overall this shop does what you need it to do. I'm furious. I went through the drive at 3:47 pm on 1/29/25. I got my daughter a cheeseburger protein style with both onions, tomato, and spread along with 2 cheeseburgers (just the cheese), 3 fries and 3 shakes. 5 chilis and 2 spread on the side. At the pay window the order that was repeated back was correct, even at the pick up window. The woman who handed me the order said that the spread and chilis were in the bag with the fries. Ok I'll trust the worker. I get home, my 5 year old daughter bites into the burger and starts crying. They put a bunch of fucking chilis on a burger that I didn't order cause why would I want my child's mouth to be on fire. Then I'm eating my burger and there is a small black hair in it. This location is kinda land locked and feels crowded. There is a drive through but that's kinda cramped given the small parking lot. You sometimes have to make your way around the parking lot to actually get into the queue. The service is quick and it is very clear they are a team and try their best to give quick service. This is my first time getting the Flying Dutchman and it was tasty but not well put together. It was messy to eat but I find that fun! The animal fries, as per usual, were delish! Hmmm well I'll just say the one on 19th street is way worse. The one next to UCI is my personal fave. Let me tell you why. One plus is there was a girl constantly cleaning tables once people got up. The parking is IMPOSSIBLE to find. We had to park across the street on the side street there by chick fil a. We then ran across to the innout. They had a spot or two open, but the drive through line is completely blocking it. Even if you managed to get in, how would you get out from there? Another reason for a removal of a star is because when we went inside, we realized they forgot a bunch of orders. They called all numbers 45-60 at one point. That's a lot to forget.
