As a native San Antonionian, I'm aware of the rivalry with Whata... and I've had a million Whata... so in comparison, I would choose In and Out. Or maybe I'm just tired of Whata.? The grilled onions were a nice touch and I like the sauce. I like that the meat is never frozen. Whata. has a lot of different options but sometimes the meat is too gamey and chewy. Everything is prepared fresh daily! Fresh potatoes and onions are cut up everyday. The buns are baked everyday and the burgers are never made from frozen patties. Their shakes... I'm a fan. That's the hardest thing to say in Texas, because everybody will slaughter you and start a long diatribe about how whataburger is god's proof that he loves you and other wild stuff... and I won't deny that. But in n out has a formula and it works. The first thing I love about this place is that everything is made to order, but still in an efficient manner. The second thing I love is that they'll do any burger "protein style", meaning they'll put it in a lettuce wrap instead of a bun, and won't charge you extra for it like burgerfi. The third thing I love is the price. I generally make it out of here with food for everyone under $20. Similar meals at five guys or burgerfi have generally run me $40 give or take and it's usually higher. There are some points to note, and you might have to try stuff a few different ways to really find your groove, but isn't that what eating out is all about? Taking the time to do it right and do it in a way that is not only pleasing to you but everyone else too? "Well done"-- if you don't like the fries, next time ask for them well done and they'll cook them into a nice extra crisp, which is great if you're traveling home with them. "No sauce"-- personally I don't like thousand island dressing and that is the base of their sauce... so the first couple times I had it I didn't like it... but when removed, boom! Perfect burger. All the other complaints I've read on here I don't believe are valid. If you're going to a super popular place and have to wait 15 minutes, I don't feel like that's unreasonable. Everyone who works here is super nice and positive, and this place works in an almost entertaining and entrancing synchronicity if you're inebriated and watching everyone work. I typically don't like to review fast food chains, but i'll make an exception for In-N-Out Burger. I love this place and I'm sure part of it has to do with the lack of one in Houston. So anytime I'm in a city where there is one available I try to visit. Some people say the place is overly hyped up, but if you compare it to McDonald's, Wendy's, etc, you can tell there is a definite difference. The burgers DO taste fresher and the fries are obviously different. I'm a big fan of McD's fries, but In-N-Out's just has a different taste to it, and it's good. They're freshly cut everyday, and they're not overly done. They're even good without ketchup. Of course, people's opinions on food is always going to be subjective so your mileage may vary on this one. I think the other thing that makes me come back for more is the secret (not so secret) menu. Do a simple Google search for their secret menu and go nuts with your next order. You can never go wrong with going animal style on your burger, fries, or both. As far as service, they're quick and efficient, especially with the constant lines, and the food is inexpensive. The place is clean, and at this particular location, there is PLENTY of seating outside. Give them a try and see what you think! read more

I ordered a cheeseburger protein style (wrapped in lettuce) and it was mostly tomatoes, not much burger to speak of. I also got animal fries and I think they're definitely overhyped. Completely underwhelming. The hype.... Is a lie. Propaganda even. Dear California, if this is the standard you want the world to see... I'm sorry. If you want an example of chain burgers to take home with you, come eat some What-a-Burger. My tirade finished, let me break it down. Stepping in it was packed. Drive thru wrapped around the building, packed. Nowhere to sit OR stand, packed. The girls at the register were super sweet and helpful. The menu was simple no frills, cut to the chase, focus on what matters. There's your star. That's it. If you have one food option on your menu.... You better ACE it. My wife got the number two. Simple. Cheese burger, no sauce, yes onion, yes pickle. Fries. A medium drink. I got the Double Double, the supposed flagship with everything but onions. I got my cup and went to grab a drink. With light ice in my cup, I added "sweet tea" and IMMEDIATELY the ice is gone. It's busy so I can forgive this. I sat down and waited for our food, which on the plus side did not take as long as it could have. Upon getting our food, the bag presentation was nice suggesting that the front crew had their stuff together.. As you can see from the photo of my burger, they're not pretending to be helpful to any part of your body but your taste buds... Which it isn't. The grease is a lie. The burger was crazy salty. Couldn't taste anything but pickles and salt. I wanted to evaluate the sauce... But I couldn't. Because it was murdered by the over salted, paper thin meat patties that look exactly like what they were: A waste of space recently thawed on a grill and butchered with salt. Lettuce was full and fluffy and the water provided by they and the tomatoes were all that offered respite from the terrible meat and stale tasting bun. The sauce, when tasted by itself, was equally disappointing and tasteless. As we were discussing our individual fry preferences I thought I'd give the fries a shot. Half way through eating my "burger" eating a fry was like eating memory foam.. And tasted like it too. Altogether, TERRIBLE. There was nothing about this place that would bring me back again. The fries at first reminded me of Whataburger's...and I wasn't impressed ....however once I read the info tips on the burger wrapping about how they cut their fries fresh in store and there food has no artificial colors, fillers, junk ingredients & preservatives...then it kind of won me over because who knows what other fast food joints put in their food...I mean trust me we KNOW...I like the menu too... short and sweet. When it's all said and done, it's pretty comparable to Whataburger... however the burgers are MUCH smaller here..definitely not Texas size. Being that I am a fast-food-foodie conscious type of person, I would have to say I would probably come here over Whataburger, however I usually only eat Whataburger if I am drunk and at that point do I really care what goes in this precious body?!? PS: they in my book are on another level because they have no heat lamps, microwave and freezers in their stores. People complain about the fries being sub-par. My husband is from CA and he knew what to order without even looking at the menu, double double animal style with strawberry shake. For me it was ok, not bad but not good. We have a lot of Californians in San Antonio now and I think this place is a little nostalgia for them. The employees do seem like they enjoy their jobs as they are very up beat. I can honestly say that the burger is marginally better than most other fast food places, but not as much as the hype would suggest. The fries were barely warmer than room temperature and the cheese on them was so cold that all of the fries were basically cemented together by it. For the majority of the time, I go drive thru here at in n out. I noticed that every time I ask the workers (female workers) at the drive through for a sauce and peppers they never give me sauce or peppers. I usually order 6 burgers for my family and I and they always give me two. Like what's the big deal when I request more sauce for the number of burgers I buy. I'm from Los Angeles and recently moved here so I'm a huge in n out fan. I've been to pretty much all the INO's along the 35 freeway and this is the worst one. Nothing like INO in Cali. I don't recommend you visit the drive thru if you're in a rush as it can be quite slow.
