Request to chef : plz learn how to make biryani and add in menu. Biryani is all about flavor and taste of meat which is absolutely zero. It was like some mixed variety rice and with rarely seen meat pieces. I have to dig and search for meat piece. And it was so sad I had to pay $20 per plate. Coming from Houston where I have tasted great biryani in matter of $10. God, this place only to feel sophisticated ambience and not for food. Not many five stars given by me but the food at Indian House Restaurant deserves it. Really great food. Large portions in my opinion so you might be able to share. Large appetizer selection and main course menu has an incredible selection of Indian food from all the different regions in India. I left this place feeling like a stuffed tick that had been on a dog for two days. I really could not stop eating. I was with 7 people and everyone was stuffed. I LOVE India House. It is my go to Indian restaurant in Chicago, because all of its dishes don't disappoint (as opposed to places that have one or two great dishes and a bunch of middle of the road executions of dishes). The only reason that I probably don't give India House a Five star review at this point is that I'm holding onto my past experience of their prices (which were a bit lower before the restaurant's most recent and quite extensive physical renovation). My wife and I used to order out from this place AT LEAST once a week. We've been making a huge commitment to cooking more and at home and generally healthier, or we'd still be frequenting this place as often as before. We live about 20-25 minutes away by the way, and we'd STILL make the trip that often. This is a very solid choice especially because you get an extra grilled plate when you dine in, and its lunchtime buffet is really great as well. My wife obsesses over the palek paneer, which is not too greasy here which is a rarity. I love everything here pretty much. Bring your appetite and enjoy. read more

In a business trip to Chicago for a week, I went to this restaurant twice - once with an American colleague, and once with an fellow Englishman - and both times were wonderful. The first time was as much about explaining the food as it was about enjoying it, the second time was an English curry-fest! The food is probably the most authentic Indian food I have had in the 20 years I have been here. When asked to spice it up British style it was fabulous. It gave both us Brits a work out. Full flavored, with subtle flavors abounding. The poppadum's were light and crispy, with a decent selection of chutneys (although no lime pickle - shame). Onion bhajis were well fried, with good caramelization of the onions and a solid coriander and cumin taste in the background, just like they are supposed to be. Spicy Chicken Makhani with a side of Aloo Gobi and a Keema Naan (with Riata or course), all spiced up to give a very satisfying "burn". Just like the old days in the home country. Service was very attentive, with everyone we met having a smile on their face, you really couldn't ask for better. The atmosphere was fun and busy both times I went. Food is the best curry I have had in two decades of living in the States, travelling all over the country. Terrible, terrible food. We went for brunch here after a few recommendations from friends, and could barely stomach the buffet. There was no flavor to anything we ate. Every dish was a surprise because it tasted nothing like what it was supposed to taste like. We tried almost everything in the hope that something would be good - idli, the tandoor chicken kebabs they serve upfront, samosas, curries, pulses - none of it was Indian food, it was some concoction dreamt up by someone who has never been to India or eaten Indian food. To add insult to injury, this place was bursting to the seams with fellow Indians. I can't fathom why people are subjecting themselves to this substandard food when there's better places (like Indian garden) closeby. I grew up in India and have lived in the US for 10 years, but this was the worst experience I've had with Indian food. While downtown, I found myself craving Indian food and came here with a friend. The place was nice, clean and had a formal atmosphere. We started our meal with an order of vegetable samosas. They were pretty standard potato and pea samosas though I believe that their serving size with 5 smaller samosas rather than two large ones was convenient. I'm someone that likes the ratio of fried outer shell to inner filling to be high and so I enjoyed this size more than the standard. It also makes for easy sharing if there are more than 2 people. We were then given a complimentary starter of naan and a tomato soup. To be honest, I was not a fan of of the combination and it seemed like the naan was just some of the tougher left over naan from earlier preparation/from the day prior. I did not eat much of this at all. For our entree, we ordered Paneer Makhani which was okay. It had very well cooked paneer in small chunks - for anyone that cooks paneer, you may know that it is easy to have the paneer crumble when chopping it into small cubes so I was impressed by the small size with solid yet soft consistency. The flavor of the curry was not terribly spicy and if you are sensitive to some of the spicier Indian dishes, this may be a great choice for you! (In general, paneer makhani tends to have a sweeter undertone which can help for people sensitive to spice!) Having said that, I also felt that the flavor was lacking slightly. This dish came with a side of rice and we also ordered Garlic Naan which was much fresher than the naan that we had received earlier. Finally, we ended our meal with Gulab Jamun - these were well done though I am used to (and would have preferred) a larger portion. The service was good overall - it was a busy night but we still got a table within a couple of minutes and both appetizers and the entree were brought out within reasonable times. I do feel that the food was overpriced. While nice Indian restaurants can sometimes be pricey, I'm not sure that the quality justified the cost. Overall, I'm not sure that I would return. Went here yesterday. Its a great looking restaurant, great ambiance, great service. We ordered 3 entrees, 4 naan and a chicken shorba for 4 people. The shorba came first and the minute I tasted it it made me fear the food about to come... grainy, under-seasoned, just not a "shorba" at all. I ended up sending it back and dared not replace it with another soup. And It was very nice of them to not charge me for the soup, which was unexpected. Then the food came and it tasted good, portions were okay too, and the naan were huge! Seriously huge. Also they bring you naan pieces with a nice dipping sauce at the beginning of the meal, which is nice. And a special mention to our server who was really great. Now for the cons... as mentioned before, the shorba was a big con. Then, the prices are ridculous. I mean 19-20$ for a veggie entree each, and the taste was nothing extraordinary. I dont mind high prices but the food should justify those prices, which it totally did not. Also at an indian place every entree comes with a naan or rice, which it didnt. The rice that came "for the table" was barely enough for two, let alone 4. I understand the place is in the heart of chicago downtown but the food needs to live up to the prices. This place is my "go to" when I'm in Chicago. I am learning/tasting that there are at least two flavor types for Masala(chicken tikki). One creamier and one more tomato ee. If your from Appleton it would be Sai Ram vs Darbar. Green Bay's Taste of India is like Sai's. Creamier. This is the way I like it. I am splitting this in 2 parts- Lunch Buffet: Very tasty, attractive looking, range of dishes served! The samosa and the bhel in the starters are really good. Delicious entrees!! Watch out for the palak (spinach) paneer (sometimes replaced by corn palak) and okra fry! Being a vegetarian, I cannot comment on the non-veg dishes. The kadhi pakoda is a hit item and so is the rajma that sometimes replaces the kadhi. This is my favorite place for Chana masala (chick pea masala) in all of Chicago! The Gulab Jamun (dessert) is always off and we stay away from it. However the kheer (rice pudding) and Mango ice cream are a good way to finish off your sumptuous lunch! For all the nice things that they have going, the staff could still try to get a couple of things right. The naan could come out at the right time once the waiter checks if you are ready for it. But No.. they just drop the naans at your table when you are in the middle of starters for it to get cold and rubbery as you down your samosas. We always ask for fresh naan when we are ready to move to main course. They could have a veggie option instead of chicken tandoori that they serve complimentary with their lunch buffet. Vegetarians didnt do anything wrong.. just saying.. Have been to this place for the last 3 years pretty regularly- One of the floor managers in a tie is always comes across as plain rude. Ala Carte: If you know which menu items you like, then you are safe. We have ordered a couple of items without prior experience and we were hugely disappointed. We have had the same dish taste completely different on 2 different occasions. So now, we have our order nailed down to the last bit, so if/when we go for dinner, we stick to our 'tried and tested' dishes. Suggest the same if you are doing ala carte at India house. I ordered online via the restaurants website (not door dash) but never received any confirmation so two hours later i called the restaurant and they told me they would call door dash to see what was going on but that the food had just been sitting there. When i called back a half an hour later asking for a refund i was given the manager who then promptly hung up on me. When i called back again, he said he would process it and to just "give him time". Then three and a half hours later, the order shows up at my house with the original time stamp on the ticket. So the food was sitting out for over three hours and also the restaurant can claim it was delivered so they don't have to issue a refund. Superb location for an Indian restaurant in Downton location. Valet parking is good for that price of $15, considering other parking garage fees nearby. Great Ambience & good service. Service could have been better; but I few Indian origin servers had bit of bad attitude (may be only with Indian customers ). Tawa Shrimp from Appetizer menu is very good; for which I went back again. Variants of Naan were good; but very disappointed with Rumali Roti. It became so hard and not chewable in few seconds. Most terrible part of our order was their Tandoor items. (same reason why I stopped visiting Schaumburg location). I ordered Mixed tandoor Grill meal. Every piece except Chicken Resmi Kabab probably had been recycled multiple times. They were so rubbery, not well cooked and not so great tasting marinade. Whereas those 2 pieces of Resmi Kabab in that platter were made with fresh chicken, very soft and tasted good. So, I assume, they can and know to make it good, but they are cutting corners by recycling items. Mixed grill comes with a Naan and an option of either soup/salad. My family ordered Chicken soup which was so pathetic. So, they gave tomato sup which is more terrible than the chicken soup. The ambiance is one of the top-notch things for this restaurant. I went here on a Sunday Afternoon, and the service was impeccable for that time of the day and week. The dishes tasted good, but I wouldn't say the number of items in the lunch buffet were enough for a 14.95$ lunch. 1. For starters, oh I am sorry, yeah there were no vegetarian starters. There were cocktail samosas which were their frozen counterparts fried, but not the samosas that were made in-house. The chicken tandoori served was a bit uncooked on the inside. 2. The number of curries served for main course were good enough, but most of them were bland and not spicy like the usual Indian. The Rajmah Masala and the Maharani Kadhi were better than the Bhindi masala for Vegetarian. 3. And as for the dessert, the Jamun wasn't something that wasn't good, but they were a bit less spongy than the usual and felt like uncooked ones, while the sugar syrup was way sweeter than it should be for the sweet. The Kheer was simply superb. All in all, the lunch was a mixture of Meh's to Okay's. I moved to the US from the UK over twenty years ago and one thing I've really missed is good Indian food. Not upscale, high end cuisine but a good basic curry which isn't bland or dodgy.
