This is a cute little spot for a quick bite or to stop for coffee. During the school year, it gets packed with students studying. I try to come here around 10 because it is in between the morning and afternoon rush. At those times, the line gets crazy, but their drinks are still consistently made well. I eat here any chance I can get but usually at least once a week. I cannot say enough great things about the food here, and the service. If you want to tickle your taste buds, I suggest that you try their arugula salad. I prefer to get it with chicken and I always substitute the blue cheese for feta. OMG, the flavors! Super hipster place, gosh I'm a sucker for these. I love the ambience and the food! There is more indoor seating than outside, and it's got a lot of modern style couches and tables. Not really the cozy coffee shop feel, but still a great place to meet up with friends for breakfast, lunch, coffee, or brunch. I was probably there for a few hours just eating, relaxing, and talking to my friends. A lot of things on their menu appealed to me, croissant and bagel sandwiches! I settled on their traditional salmon bagel. It was a great meal back from my 1 week trip in New Orleans! I don't think you can go wrong with smoked salmon on a cream cheese bagel. I've had a love hate relationship with influx. I go sporadically and have finally come to enjoy it so much. Sitting outside and working on my laptop enjoying simple food. My regular is the Croissant Melt. It consists of Black Forest Ham, Brie Cheese and Dijon Mustard on Toasted Buttery Croissant with a side of sliced apples that I put into the sandwich. It's like putting potato chips into your turkey sandwich. Super Delicious! Love having breakfast for lunch, who doesn't? Don't leave without having a cupcake, they're scrumptious! I was a huge fan of Influx. I have been here many, many, MANY times! The things i love are the space. It's pretty randomly decorated, but usually comfortable to sit around for a few hours, and i love their benches out front. I also love their home-made bagels and focaccia bread. The thing that made me change my mind about Influx is their coffee. I recently had a coffee drink there and either the almond milk was burnt/ tasted funny or the shot was burnt. It had a really bad taste. The time before that i felt the same way about my drink. It's disappointing, but i hope that they will change that and do better! read more

I work at Born and Raised Restaurant. I picked up my tips this week and haven't been able to make it to the bank to deposit them because work has been crazy. The only change I had besides 100 bills was a 20. I ordered take out and my total was 26. Showed up to pick up my order and first they said they couldn't brake a 100. Understandable. I said I was happy to buy a gift card. I was thinking whatever the amount it doesn't matter. I work right across the street from the Influx Little Italy. We are there every single fucking day. I can use that. Today I just wanted coffee and food before getting ready. Manager came over and said that to be honest they didn't want to take my money. That my 100 dollar bill looked like it had been taped together. Dude. I cant even explain this. There was absolutely not one single piece of tape on this bill. I looked at the bill and said to myself this is just insanity. The bill is perfectly fine. Its fucking money. Its paper. Its in good condition and how can you say that to someone. If it would have been a shitty bill I would get it but it was not. Like Ive seen shitty bills. This was not. And how can you say to someone that their money is shady and you don't feel comfortable taking it. I know we live in a shady area. Its dirty, dog shit everywhere and there's lots of homeless on the streets. But come on. My demeanor is not of someone struggling to make it living on the streets. Even with no make up and leggings. I told the manager, you see me walk my dogs around all the time. You know I live right around the corner. He said he didn't want to take my money to the bank and have the bank reject my money. The bill I had was a little torn at the bottom. A little. The color is not even faded. Insane. Im not writing this to get a response. I am not writing this to try to affect anyone's job. I understand we deal with a lot of bullshit on a daily basis. We industry need to be appreciated because our job is hard and we are still working through these hard times. But I am writing this because I work in the industry and this was no fucking way to treat someone. Make a sign that you don't take large bills. Get a counterfeit detector pen. The vanilla lattes are so flavorful and full of energy! I brought my mom here once and she asked me over and over again to take her back. My mom is sorta a vanilla latte connoisseur and she raved about their lattes. I've had a few things on their menu including the cupcakes (delicious). My favorite is the vegetable bagel on an everything bagel. I also enjoy the plain bagel with cream cheese and homemade raspberry jelly (messy and tart). I work within close proximity to the cafe and the other day my coworker and I wanted something semi healthy. Unfortunately most places by our work you need to drive your car through the drive through. Avoiding a clog artery I suggested looking on Influx's menu online. Of course they have an array of freshly green salads. I opted for the blue cheese salad (mixed greens, blue cheese crumbles, apples, walnuts, grapes and cranberries) with a balsamic vinaigrette. For those carb lovers it also comes with two slices of fluffy bread. I added chicken for 2$. The salad came out to 8.50$. Less of what I would pay at a restaurant for a similar salad. read more

But lately Alexis (girl with undercut) she's been giving me so much attitude. Not sure why. And it's not just with me but with my friends as well. I'm friend with the workers and the owners of the café. I went to influx to do some work I order two coffees from the girl with the overalls. I asked her if she could make one coffee for now and then later before I leave to make me the other coffee. She of course said yes. She left before I did. After she left I left maybe 20 minutes later. I told Alexis that I had ordered 2 coffee from the girl with the overalls, but I had asked Trista to make my second coffee before I leave, but she of course had left already. I asked Alexis if she could make me my coffee. She looked at me and with an attitude asked me "Did you pay already?" I said "of course" and I told her my order. Reading reviews of Influx....blahblahblah...cupcakes. What, Influx sells cupcakes? Red velvet ones? Yes, I went for cupcakes and only cupcakes. They were awesome. They met all my standards for cupcake love. Let's go down the list one by one.... 1. chocolate/chocolate: chocolate cake is my least favorite flavor of cake. but this cupcake could make me a fan - dense and very chocolately. The frosting was also very good - thick chocolately buttercream. 2. coconut: wow - this was so coconutty. There was coconut in the cake and the frosting. Very sweet but if you like coconut, this is cupcake heaven. 3. carrot cake: my favorite of the batch. Real carrot cake with lots of nuts and raisins in the cake. The cream cheese frosting was perfect and they garnish it with a bit of candied walnut. 4. red velvet: I was thrown off by the strawberry on top - red velvet has nothing to do with strawberries. But the cake was good, with a bit of cocoa flavor and the frosting was the cream cheese frosting that I already knew I liked from the carrot cake. I'll say this is one of my fave red velvet cupcakes in SD. I'll be back for more cupcakes, but the vibe of the place itself did not lend to hanging out...too many people on their laptops pretending to be working. read more

I divide coffee places into the "lived in" ones and "modern" ones and switch between the two. Influx falls in the last category. It's kind of a hidden 'house' and the reason why I drive to this area. It has in my opinion all the aspects you want from a coffee spot. It's spacious (in fact I think they could use more of their space) with lots of light, wi-fi, outlets, outside seating, a nice mix of people and good service. It is a popular place so there can be times that you have to wait a little for a good spot when you have a laptop with you (which I often don't). It usually seems to be filled with younger professionals who work/ study here. People walk in and out for pick ups (cupcakes) all the time as well. The coffee here is great (strong) and their food stands out for the freshness and generous portion sizes (and still very reasonable priced). The bread buns are big, as well as their salads. They have a lot of bagels options (I'm a fan of the spicy hummus), scrambled eggs, breakfast, grilled sandwiches, vegan options, salads and pastries. People usually go outside when they receive or make a phone call and that's kind of sets the tone for the place: a lot of people work/ study here and it's the perfect environment for that, but at the same time it's a good place for a meeting over a coffee on the big couch. The background music is another factor that is never a problem: not too loud, good mix of (indie) music and I always hear Mogwai at least once when I'm here so that's a plus. Parking is easy in one of the side streets and the place is close to the freeways entry and exit and that might be for a reason: it's not just a place to go to if you live in the neighborhood, but it's a place worth to drive to. read more

They have some of the greatest coffee around. Their organic roast is absolutely sensational. They've got a good breakfast selection too. Granolas, breakfast bagels, sandwiches, pastries and more. This place a total magnet for laptop junkies seeking free wifi. Every time I'm there, at least 8-10 people are sitting against the west wall, downloading music, watching porn, or whatever else they do on their MacBook Pros. It's a little creepy though, because they're completely in their own World. Nobody talks to each other...they just put headphones on and escape behind the glow of their computer screens. Brad B, the mayor of Yelp SD, recommended that I visit this place to get some work done the other day and how could I not trust a rec from him?! It was the perfect place to work on a nice warm day because since all of the indoor tables were taken up, I parked myself on the outdoor benches. The negative to this was that there were no outlets, but it was perfect for as long as my laptop would stay alive! The wifi was reliable and I liked how the vibe seemed to encourage those to spend some time and get some work done here. I hate coffee shops that make you feel rushed or guilty for hanging out - if I'm going to work here for a long time, I'm also going to be spending money! Influx kicks ass. If I was still a student, I'd probably sit there engaged in my studies while taking small frequent sips of my latte that can last a couple of hours. And that's one of the attractive qualities that make the experience of visiting Influx so pleasant. Its not just the beverage taste and offerings, its the environment and the atmosphere that stimulate your mind and body. A beautiful Victorian converted into a coffee house provides a cozy and unique sense to it. The Influx staff and patrons accent the place with a smart urban feel that compares closely to intellectually bohemian parts of San Francisco and parts of Soho in NYC. Go to places like Borders and Starbucks and you don't get that same feel. Those places feel commercial and cliche since its a popular meeting point for undergrads half-assing their study focus with constant phone interruptions or latte consuming grads trying to find refuge from their noisy or annoying roommates. I'll admit to going to Starbucks because I think their lattes are still the best and better than Influx's offerings, but I don't camp or make an effort to hold study or meeting sessions there because it may be counterproductive... but that's just me. read more

So fellow yelper Lyn P has gotten me on a cupcake kick due to all her fabulous reviews of cupcakes around San Diego and beyond. I even messaged her and asked where is the best red velvet cupcake in SD. She said Influx. So I got a last minute group of yelpers with flexible schedules to meet yesterday for lunch at Influx. I picked up my favorite Canadian Lisa C and we headed to Influx to meet the others in the pouring rain. I tossed my VZ navigator to Lisa and asked her to give me directions. She didn't like my map so she went to her blue dot on her I-phone. The blue dot sucks! We circled many times and I was kind of freaking out because I was on empty and was pretty sure we were gonna run out of gas in the pouring rain and still have no cupcake. I told her to call Edgar to get directions. Edgar passed the phone to Lety to let us in on the fact that we were circling a block from the place. After wading through a river to get out of the vehicle, we walked in the door half an hour late. A few people had already eaten and Edgar had to get back to work:( The rest of the group stayed around and refreshed their coffees while Lisa and I got food. Edwin showed up an hour and a half later, at which time we all clapped for him finally making it to lunch. It really is a comfortable place to hang out. They have a cozy couch and some tables. It felt like we were sitting in someones clean, modern living room. Once Edwin got to the counter Mason, Christian, Lety and I did the whole "while you are up Edwin" thing and had him get us all new drinks. The food and coffee here is delicious. I had a croissant and the goat cheese salad. A few people had breakfast items and everyone seemed happy with their food. As for the original reason I came here, the red velvet cupcake, ehhhh. They brought it out and I cut it into six pieces so everyone at the table could try it. Everyone liked the cream cheese frosting but no one liked the cupcake. It tasted like it had been frozen, then thawed. The frosting was fresh though. As I definitely trust Lyn's taste in cupcakes, I think we were there on a bad cupcake day.
