Ok, so first impressions aren't always right. I'll admit to being wrong when I'm wrong (which is rare). :) At first, when I walked in, I thought "Great, this is a cafe for the Golden Hill snobs and hipsters. Awesome!" I'll fit right in! Ha ha. . . not. I ordered a drink and sat down and read my book and almost every visit since then has been pretty pleasant. I always get a tea and maybe a cupcake to nibble on. For the most part, the employees have been super nice (especially Felix!!!). I've met one guy who seemed a bit put off by my drink order. I'm sorry my tea was such an inconvenience for you. :p I do have to say that the atmosphere is kind of intimidating. When you first walk in, it's kinda of unnerving that it's so white and bright in there. Then people look up from their laptops or from behind the counter and stare at you. Then you think "Do I have something on my face?" Or maybe I'm just that insecure. Anyway, I like this place. My friends and I study here. I drink the tea from Kenya with steamed soy. I did have the granola and yogurt once, it was tart! If you like tart yogurt, then try it. If not, then get something else. Cupcakes are always a good option. :) read more

I visited this spot probably twice a month with my prayer group. It's not necessarily quiet, but it was right in the middle of where we all lived. I chose it based on the reviews. The workers are super friendly. There's always parking even though it's only street parking. It's small and I feel like they need to update the couch. However, it met our needs. Hip-hip-hooray for Gina and folks at Cafe Influx! I live in the Bay Area where cupcakes are a Big Deal (Kara's, Miette, so many great cupcakes!). My wife and I wanted to serve cupcakes for our wedding reception in San Diego, but when we couldn't get any of the bakeries up here to ship, we had to search for a more local source. We tried Extraordinary Desserts, Michelle Coulon Dessertier, etc., but we literally took one bite of Influx's cupcakes and we had an obvious winner. It's enough that Influx has amazing cupcakes, but it's even better that the cafe's owner, Gina, went to such great lengths to make sure we had what we wanted. Even though she had another wedding the night before ours (that she was attending as a guest) and limited cold storage for our cupcakes, she agreed to pull an all-nighter baking our order so that we'd have fresh cupcakes. The red velvet and coconut cupcakes were a huge hit -- the perfect thing to go with our Carolina brunch. Influx does my work for me. Not literally, obviously, but by removing anything remotely comfortable, shiny, moving, and big-fonted, I am finally able to work. There has been several a time when I have worked for a solid 6 hours and taken off my "Constitutional Interpretation" blinders, unaware that the time has passed. Terrible for my social life, but amazing for my future...at least that's the word on the street thus far. The minimalist approach affects everything except the strength of the coffee. I'm not a fan of the usual bells-and-whistles, and feel like a place can be aptly judged by the classics. Usually a drip coffee, shot of espresso, or an Americano, and I am good to go. Influx excels at all three. Parking can be a pain, but wake up early (or at least earlier than most), grab a coffee, and get some work done. The kinda of place where professors go to and read. Other than that, it's a cute quiet place with prices that are decent enough. Their red velvet cupcake was good, but not the best I've had in my life. Keep in consideration that I've had probably over 20 red velvet cupcakes. I liked the chai drink and I believe I got a tuna melt on bagel. It was pretty good. One bad thing is, it's a small place, so I had to sit outside on a super cold day, but other than that, i would come here again, perhaps to study or read like most of the people who go there do. read more

Looks can be deceiving. From the outside, the Influx coffee shop looks like a warm, cozy Victorian-style mansion. But the inside couldn't be any more different -- it's all minimalist and modern. I don't know what I love more about Influx: the delicious coffee, the super friendly staff, the AMAZING cupcakes, the tasty soups and sandwiches, the simple decor, the people watching, or the home-away-from-home feeling. Influx is one of my favorite cafes here in San Diego and is a small reminder that SD has a lot of perfect little hangouts just waiting to be found. Sometimes the row of people on laptops can be a little weird to see, 'cause it's not a computer lab but people treat it like it is. And all the laptop people greet you with stink eye when you walk in. However, I learned to embrace their work ethic and brought some of my own work to do the other day (laptop-less though) and was pleasantly surprised. I'm a sucker for a goooood MMMMMMMMexican Mocha and Influx is a total boss at making them! There was a slight chill in the air this morning and I was wishin', hopin', dreamin' about how a Mexican Mocha would just kick off my Saturday morning perfectly. I was meant to be in Golden Hill by 8:30AM for a photoshoot and I needed caffeine before hand. I went to my lil Yelp app and looked to see what was nearby and TA-DAAA there was Influx! For 8am-ish this place was pretty full - there were only a couple of tables available, but I was on a to-go mission. I ordered my drink and the service was friendly and fast (my favorite kind!). My drink was the perfect blend of creamy spicy chocolatey goodness and my danish was fresh and delicious. I'll be going back for a bagel next time - and taking my Kindle because this is the kind of cafe I want to spend some time in savoring my drink (and food). read more

The Bay Area spoiled me. I'm used to San Francisco's ample options for cool, comfortable, and functional cafes, so when I moved to San Diego a few weeks ago, I assumed I'd be able to find a perfect cafe pretty easily. This was not the case. In fact, I almost thought I'd need to lower my standards. And then, almost accidentally, I stumbled upon Influx Cafe. Located on the outskirts of Downtown San Diego in a semi-residential neighborhood, Influx has just about everything I sought. Most of my fellow cafe goers were working, and when I know people are being productive around me, I'm more likely to get things done. It's comfortable enough to camp out all day; there are couches, booths, and tables. Despite the productive atmosphere, the ambiance maintained a relaxed space that made me want to come back for more. The staff were friendly, stylish, and genuinely cared about making sure I had a good experience at their establishment. You must try their decadent handmade croissants. They're heavenly. read more

This place is way chill. They have a vast variety of pastries and caffeinated drinks. All reasonably priced. They also have food but, I've never had it. However, I was with there a a few friends a few days ago and everyone ordered real food except for me. Everything looked and smelled great. I was disappointed I didn't order anything. But, I did order a pumpkin muffin and it was awesome! Really, one of the best pumpkin muffins I've had in a long time. Nice, clean quiet place. Influx, I have a little crush on you. Not the kind of crush where, were we still in high school I'd write "Julia loves Influx!!!" all over my Trapper Keeper. It's more of a quiet crush. The kind of crush where I just sit in a molded plastic seat all evening and ogle your handsome sweetness while I sip my cherry Sakura tea. I like your goat salad with its candied nuts and balsamic huff. (And with a name like goat salad, it's gotta be good.) I like your tuna sandwich, which opened my eyes to a world where albacore does just fine without mayo as long as it has a little tapenade to keep it company. I dig your blended coffee drink, and your brownie, and your blended coffee drink WITH THE BROWNIE CHOPPED UP IN IT -- I'll let that sink in for a moment. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way about you, Influx. The writer camped out at the big round table? The guy in the motorcycle jacket? Those two little ladies eating raspberry scones? They have googly eyes, too. But don't let that go to your head. Don't go all Krakatoa on us. You're doing everything just right: you have a staff that's so adorable I want to pinch their cheeks; an owner who's the essence of serene efficiency; a brief but well-executed menu; a clean bathroom; and free wi-fi. I felt like I entered a secret cupcake zone when I arrived. My friend found this place on Yelp but when we got there, before noon, there were no cupcakes to be seen, no cupcakes on the menus on the walls either. When we approached the counter to ask for cupcakes, the guy nodded and seemed to secretly sneak to the back to get a stash for us to look at. My friends and I just looked at each other like, is this normal? They have to go and hide them in the back and bring them out only when asked? Turns out, they only bring them out after noon so they really didn't have any for us to choose from. The guy showed us just some chocolate on chocolate, red velvet and a lemon cupcake. He said if we wanted the red velvet, he'll go to the back and make it look pretty for us. So we agreed on getting just the lemon and a red velvet. He comes back with this cupcake he claims he decorated just for us... we noticed all he did was throw on a raspberry but whatever. About an hour later our cupcakes had completely melted since it was 90 degrees outside and three of us split just two cupcakes. Man those were good. The frosting on the red velvet was melted but tasted really good and the cake was still moist. A very good cupcake. I just hope that next time they'll put out some more of their secret stash of cupcakes and let us have more options. read more

They make hot drinks here, hotter than most. I mean HOT. So be careful. But it sure is nice cos it stays HOT till you get to WORK, I mean work. Come here before work, get a delicious HOT soy latte (They use Kikkoman Soy Milk, makers of *the* premiere soy sauce, hence, premiere soy milk too) and a pastry. My friend and I had a huge craving for sugar and Yelped for red velvet cupcakes. This place was at the top of the list and the reviews drew us in. First of all, trying to find parking wasn't the easiest thing in the world. Influx has some pretty nice space, but the atmosphere is pretty darn cold. They have some nice furniture, but it was absolutely difficult to get comfortable on. My friend and I stood at the register for a good 5-10 minutes for someone to help us out when the place wasn't even busy. The man helping us seemed very monotone and didn't crack a smile. We both got red velvet cupcakes and they were NOT what I had expected. They were cold, dry, and rough. I could BARELY taste the red velvet because it was over powered by the huge lump of cream cheese frosting on top. When we were done eating, we didn't want to leave our plates on the table and we were left standing around with them by the register not knowing where to place them, even when one of the employees was standing around doing absolutely nothing. We waited around another couple minutes before he took our plates. I don't know, bottom line, I won't pay $3.50 for a less than average tasting cupcake to eat it uncomfortably in a cold atmosphere. this place is really small. the only reason i went was to find free wi-fi. the problem is there aren't many places to sit and i didn't see many plugs. maybe i'm a dork, but i didn't feel like getting on my knees to try and find some. i just had a bagel, toasted with cream cheese, it was good. the workers all have good attitudes and it seems like a pretty popular place, so don't be surprised to not find a seat. i'd like to go back after reading the other yelpers talk about the cupcakes and other pastries! read more

I really like you, Influx. I love the peeling paint on the houses nearby, the wide open streets, and the strangely familiar desolate feel of the hill leading up to the Balboa Navy hospital. In fact, this whole stretch of Golden Hill reminds me a LOT of growing up back home in San Pedro, home to the Port of Los Angeles, and the same working class homes not far from the wide vistas of ocean expanse. I'm currently sitting at Influx, relishing the chocolate chip-pecan cookie I've just eaten and savouring the last dregs of my cup of coffee while I listen to Sufjan Stevens mournfully intone over banjo strings and soak up the free wireless with a quick trip to Yelp. It's a healing moment of just getting away from everyone, and I'm trying to enjoy it as much as possible. I'd heard quite a bit about Influx, but after having just visited for the first time, it is definitely a place has to be seen to really believed. It's in a house that looks just like all the others; oddly painted, weather-beaten on the outside, with angles and lines all reminiscent of a flash of prosperity a few decades ago. All of that changes when you step inside. Ultra modern table settings, wood flooring, well-lit--Influx is a trendy, tasteful little coffee nook. I want to just curl up with a book on their L-shaped red sofa, stare out the window at the medium-paced traffic on Broadway, or tap contentedly on my little laptop. While I love Krakatoa for getting work done and its own welcoming feel, I'm pretty sure I've discovered where I'm going to go whenever it's raining, and I want to feel warm, connected, and comfortable. I'm a fan of the mocha here. The white mocha isn't horrendously sweet like other coffee places. It was good - just slightly sweet with a hint of white chocolate. The mocha is great still. The americano was bold and smooth; no bitter aftertaste and not water downed. The red velvet is still delicious and for just $2.25, I'm a fan. The cheese danish was delicious too. It was buttery and flaky like their croissants. Rich and had a great, not too sweet just yummy cheese filling. Though I doubt I could study here or stay too long. The decor doesn't give a warm inviting atmosphere. It seems cold with blank white walls and the matter of fact staff. But it has everything I want in a coffee place: great cupcakes, tasty pastries, and good coffee. read more

Anti-Wifi Philosophy Is Interesting Good coffee and food, hip atmosphere, yet friendly staff. I live nearby, used to come here all the time and buy coffee and food, and work at my laptop. No more - the wifi was just not reliable enough. So I had a conversation with the owner about why she doesn't have her own WiFi (it's just SoCalFreeNet.org which is extremely touch-and-go here). She said she doesn't want people "camping out" for hours and hours, doing homework and such, but rather buying food and eating and leaving. Turnover, for business reasons, in the space. I understand her point of view, but I wonder if in the long run it really serves her and the community. Look at a coffee house like Lestat's on Park. The place is always packed (many of them are students that stay for hours, socializing and doing homework), and the patrons buy drinks and food. They seem to be doing OK. Is it different neighborhoods that make the difference? Higher lease rates? The Livingroom on University closed because they had a large, high-lease space, and lots of iffy people hanging about and not buying enough. Good question - what philosophy works in the long run, and where and why? I'd like to hear comments form owners and patrons. read more

Quaint and hip, Influx is a nice change from the Starbuck's crowd. I dropped by today for lunch. My girlfriend and I found it to be quite busy, but what the hell, it's Saturday. We waited patiently to place our order, while eying the limited indoor seating, hoping someone might be leaving soon, but most seemed to be in for the long haul with laptops and books open. With orders place, we found a quiet table outside and enjoyed our lunch there. My turkey sandwich with pesto was delicious and fresh. Soft bread, good veggies, and a hearty helping of turkey. My better half enjoyed a gorgeous goat cheese salad with cranberries and balsamic vinaigrette. My few bites were great and she loved it, too! I found Influx to be a nice spot to cozy up and enjoy the individuality that we all posses. Seems like a place for people who want to break out of the norm, although their current menu offers slight departure from that norm. Overall, I enjoyed our food. Service was polite and as prompt as possible. I wish I could enjoy a nice quiet hour or two here with my laptop or a good book, but that's not really my thing. read more

If you're looking for the best cupcakes in town, Influx is the place to be. It's cool place to lounge and hangout if you're in the Golden Hills area. My girlfriend and I frequent this place quite often for its cupcakes. I must say I've practically tried every cupcake that has been made at Influx. Here are some of the few: ***** Red Velvet w/the cream cheese icing is quite heavenly and my most favorite cupcake by far. This is probably the best on in San Diego. It totally won my vote over Sprinkles. *****Coconut cupcake was my second best. It has the cream cheese icing and is covered w/coconut. This is very yummy considering,i'm not big on coconut. ****Carrot cupcake was quite yummy too. The cream cheese frosting was perfect garnished with a candied walnut. *Chocolate cupcake with chocolate butter cream was not so memorable. Although it tastes amazing, I must gripe as to how much the cupcake shrunk in size in comparison to what it was 2 years ago. Honestly, I have yet to find any cupcake that can beat this. This place is a must see just for their cupcakes alone. If you must try, please call first before you head down there. One of my new favorites!!! Such a hipster's Mecca though. Goodness gracious, they're everywhereeee. Anyway, the blended 3 (vanilla and caramel) YUM YUM. I have also gotten the turkey 1 and the turkey 2 on multiple occasions and hot dayuuumm. So good. Both of them. The meat is fresh and the bread is so soft and fluffy. The only thing about this place is that during peak hours, you can pretty much forget about finding a place to sit. I wish they could expand their outdoor patio because it truly is such a beautiful place in an awesome community. I feel guilty giving 4 stars because this place is amazing but I'm one of those people who don't give perfect scores on anything. It's my disorder so pardon me if my words do not say 4 stars. I was craving for red velvet cupcake. I usually eat at Auntie Em's when I go to LA, which I often do, but since I've been sick and school's kicking my butt, I have to stay here in lovely SD. I called first to make sure I don't waste my trip, and surprisingly enough, they were out of it and the next batch won't be ready in a couple of hours. So, I get there a couple of hours later with a book to read. I ordered a red velvet and a white chocolate mocha and I started to devour (in a lady-like manner). The strawberry on top was a little weird but once I dipped it on the icing, it went well together. The cake was moist and it melted right in my mouth. So, heavenly that I was moaning in my head. I hope nobody read my mind. I forgot some of the warnings here about their hot drinks. I burnt my tongue when I took a small sip of my mocha. I got another red velvet and a bread pudding to go. The bread pudding is just amazing. I heated it for 15 seconds before I ate it. The blueberries and peaches were so good with the bread. Not too sweet compared to KKED's cinnamon bread pudding. Will definitely go back and bring some friends or school work. I would add another star (on top of the invisible 5 stars to make it 6 stars) because the cutest boy talked to me. He said he LOVED the book I was holding and that he has read it a few times. It's a book catered to health care professionals so I asked what he was. Med student in UCSD. I am new to SD and I really miss the Bay Area. I came to SD via a 3-year stint in LA. I work a lot and miss out on regular human-to-human interaction. My hus & dog are still up in LA so sometimes I feel like the old lady on the Hill. Influx has helped me adjust. It has a community feel, is hip but not pretentious, and their coffee/food is delicious. When I am too busy to cook, Influx cooks for me. When I am lonely, I work from Influx instead of from home. It is definitely one of my favorite establishments in San Diego. Also --- I have had the total opposite experience of the posters who claim the staff at Influx are not friendly. I am no hot young thing (MJ's song "pretty young thing" is awesome though, huh?) nor am I a hipster but every person who has worked there has been affable and helpful to me and every other customer I have seen them interact with. Oh da 'flux. . . Influx is about 2.3 blocks from my friend of all friends' place . . . . we never think twice about stopping in for their excellent lattes. . the place is perfect for a tete a tete. . SPACE is ingeniously used in this place. . it screams "open up!" be light, be airy, be free. . . cut the crap and just BE! 'Flux is not a poser with complicated menu items. . . it is not trying to be something that it isn't like a Wilson Elser Melt or a Gergosian mixed salad. . . .it is a Mozz 1, Feta 2, Spinach Salad. . . . its final offerings are delicious. . . there is no need for frills and hype. . its prices are more than fair. . its food is more than good. . I've had the Feta 2, a tea, a 5-star double latte, and a croissant. . . . (not in one sitting! but over time with multiple visits!) and of course, my introduction to Influx came in the form of a boxed up chocolate cupcake my friend of all friends brought to my place one evening. . For some reason I am inclined to provide the disclaimer "I'm not a seasoned coffee aficionado by any means" of some sort whenever I grab coffee with any company. I'll awkwardly stare at the menu for hours on end if no one was watching, possibly contemplating my life all over again. Anyway, I was meeting up with someone new for coffee, I settled on an iced cafe au lait (or a latte was it?) with an extra shot of expresso. I like my coffee strong, but finding the right flavor has always been a struggle for me. Needless to say, the coffee was quite flavorful without any added sweeteners/sugar and the price is just right. We shared a pecan pie, which wasn't too sweet, as my company is a huge fan of pecan and enjoyed his Vietnamese coffee (yes, it's on the menu!). I'm the type who forgets how easily time flies, and yet two hours later, I am surprised that this was the longest I've ever stayed inside a coffee shop of any sort. The vibe is comfortable with a mix of booth seating and plastic chairs. This is a no-frills coffee shop, with high ceilings and an outdoor patio (two small tables) to enjoy the amazing San Diego weather. I do agree that there isn't something special that sets this place apart from other local shops, but appreciate the friendly service and a menu to suit a variety of tastes. I'm definitely interested in coming back to try their food some day. Also there is plenty of street parking if you're not there during the peak hours of the weekday or late nights on weekend. The gourmet coffee drinks are creamy, the food is very tasty, fresh and of high quality and the owners, managers employees are very friendly. They staff truly wants to make sure you are satisfied with your order and make you feel at home in their coffeehouse. I really do have mixed feelings about this place. Here's the deal: Their espresso is AWESOME. I mean, it is very good quality and they make delicious lattes. Also, the service seems good. It took them a while to bring me my latte and bagel, but the place was busy. So I have a problem with a few things. Starting with the menu: it is like a typical bagel place. You can get the salmon and lox, and traditional classics. I wanted something vegetarian so I got the spicy vegan. It was a toasted bagel with spicy hummus, two slices of tomato, three slices of cucumber, and two red onion rings. To satisfy the vegan diner they really need to be more creative than that. Why not have a grilled mediterranean vegetable and hummus bagel, or even add avocado to the spicy vegan? Having a fresh basil, buffalo mozzarella and tomato bagel with vinegar would be good too. I mean, the menu was so dull! And for a place with a modern decor, their cutlery and coffee mugs stood out as being cheap and crap. They need to make the modern feel consistent, and this should even extend to the mugs and eating utensils. The coffee mugs have no style and look like they belong in a truck stop coffee bar. The cutlery is cheap and flimsy and it was difficult to cut my bagel with the dull, awkward knife. They really need to invest in sturdy, efficient utensils that also have a nice modern design to them. Influx is a rather small cafe, but considering the limited amount of space they have, they really utilize that space well. There is some indoor seating, nice cozy shaded outdoor seating to the side of the cafe, and some seating in the sun out in front. If you want to come here for breakfast on a Saturday and Sunday morning be prepared for a crowd; it gets busy! read more

I may be too old to say this but Influx is what the kids call " da bomb" I love Influx. the coffee and tea is from Cafe Moto..lovely. the food is wonderful. It's a great place to get a light salad or a amazing sandwich. Jason's wife Gina bakes all the baked goods. I don't even like sweets and her things always tempted me. This was my first time coming to Influx and I went with Del. r, I love the area, who doesn't like Golden Hill? There was a good number of people, mostly on laptops, I sometimes wonder why people do that, go to a coffee shop to get on their laptop, why not just stay at home? I ordered Mozz 2, mozzarella cheese, basil, tomato with a balsamic vinaigrette on wheat. Along side that I had a hot and sweet Vietnamese coffee, yummy. I think I'll come again at some point and try a cupcake or a bagel. My only improvement would be more round tables. read more

Forget Starbucks and all the other corporate "cafes/coffeeshops" and head over to Influx for a legit cup of JOE. Not only will you find good coffee but you'll also bump into some amazing pastries (made in house from scratch, some bomb teas, Coca Cola in old fashioned bottles, free Wireless, good music streaming through the speakers at a level where you can still enjoy a good read, and some down to earth service; no corporate BS. Become a regular here and be assured that the Baristas will make an effort to remember you, and don't be surprised if they smile!
