Wanting something hot and within walking distance of our hotel, we stumbled upon Ippudo about a block away. Walking in around dinner time on a Monday evening, the wait actually wasn't too bad. And we wound up getting seated after about a 15min wait. Although rather small and unassuming from the outside, this restaurant actually goes pretty deep, and can seemingly seat quite a few tables. Once we were led to the dining area, we got to see just how busy and packed this place is. A stark contrast to the quiet and rather empty wait area out front. My wife opted for the Akamaru Shinaji ($20), while I chose the Potara Miso ($22). The Akamaru Shinaji consisted of pork tonkatsu broth, Hakata thin noodles, scallions, bamboo shoots, topped with our choice of protein (we chose pork). While the Potara Miso consisted of Ippudo pork tonkatsu broth mixed with spinach, corn, bamboo shoots, marinated pork chashu, and Tokyo thick wavy noodles. We both really enjoyed our respective bowls of ramen, however did agree that it was priced on the higher end given what was served. I love Ippudo but it's so damn expensive. Came here for dinner, and was happy to immediately be seated as the people who came 30 minutes after us weren't so lucky. I ordered the Akamaru Modern, and for a ramen that is $20+, they really need to give you a free egg - not an egg that you can add on for $3 which is ridiculous. The Ippudo noodles are unmatched as they are thin and al dente, almost like a pasta feel and goes well with the broth that isn't overly salty. I also appreciate the pickled bamboo shoots which went well with the fatty chasu. I do think the spicy miso paste made a difference and elevated the dish. Honestly, I'm still a big fan of Ippudo but it's food is really too damn expensive. I would say it's still one of my favorite ramen places in the city even though it is a chain. read more

The slices of pork chashu were nice and tender though, and the bamboo shoots gave a good crunch. Perhaps going with a spicy ramen would've provided a more abundant flavor, but otherwise, Ippudo isn't want it used to be. The prices are also not the greatest here. I've had better ramen elsewhere for a better value. Went on a Saturday afternoon and waited about 20 min for a table of 3. But if I had to nitpick, I wish they filled the bowl with more broth, especially considering it was $21 (and $3 more for 1 egg). Personally would've liked price closer to $17-18 for what I got. But having said that, still recommend for the experience. People used to wait hours for this in the East Village, yet here the wait is reasonable. This one was right next door to our hotel at Hilton Garden Time Square North and didn't want to go far since it was raining in the city. Easy to find. Not super crowded when we came for dinner at 6p. My brother got the miso ramen and it was pretty good but the miso was not coming through teetering on the side of salty. The chasu was undercharred and was a little on the thin side. My yuzu shoyu was good but the yuzu included slices of yuzu skin which was not a good surprise in the soup. The shoyu was just ok nothing to rave about. We have tried the Ippudo in Asakusa as well as the Westside and this 5th Avenue restaurant and I can say that the quality and service at all three are excellent. We were given a 20 minute wait time when we arrived at around 7pm and it was pretty accurate. The server was wonderful and the restaurant and the restroom was clean. As for the food it's always the same top notch quality you expect from this establishment. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. I highly recommend the vegetable bun and the spicy gyoza. The flavor was off the charts. If you're looking for the best ramen in the city this is the place to go! read more

Came here to order some ramen to go. The restaurant is nice on the outside. On the inside, it was dark, I didn't go past the waiting area. I ordered the shiromaru motoaji ramen. I also got a spice ball. Unfortunately, I really didn't like the ramen taste, and thank goodness I got the spice ball, or I would have really been upset. It didn't have too much flavor to it, and the toppings were lacking. I have had better ramen for cheaper, so this was disappointing. Came here for the first time on a Saturday after 1:30 PM. I thought that would be a slow time but I still waited 35 minutes for one single seat as I am a party of one. This place does not observe any kind of social distancing and keep in mind this place is tiny. Further you can see through to part of the kitchen and the staff preparing the Ramen are not wearing masks covering their nose or their mouth's. Despite all of this I still sat down and order food because I have heard incredible things about this place but they're San Francisco locations from family members. So now I had an opportunity to try it and I could not pass it up. This place is incredible and super tasty well worth the weight and reasonably price considering it's location to upper Eastside. The portions are very fair and I am not hunting for noodles nor am I hunting for pork belly or in this case chicken. I will definitely come back and have to come back. The only other disappointment was the fact that there was random lettuce in the bowel bun I ordered which I don't understand. Truly horrible service. Nothing worth suffering the inhuman treatment for. Same instant noodles you get on ANA airline. Totally overrated. The reception can't handle a larger waiting crowd professionally. Personally I understand the Japanese culture but I also appreciate my personal space and prefer not having staff members yelling next to me. The reception team needs to go back to hospitality school to learn about what politeness means. Perhaps the militant style bossing waiting customers around works in Japan but not here in North America. Not seating guests until everyone has arrived is a silly and rude rule. 2nd time at Ippudo's 5th Avenue location, and it definitely doesn't disappoint! Service: Staff was friendly and approachable! Catered to all our needs and were extremely transparent about wait times. The food definitely made the wait very worth it. Food: For starters, we had a sampler of pork/chicken buns, Takoyaki, and French Fries. The pork/chicken were flavorful, but I would've appreciated the buns being a bit warmer. The french fries were definitely made to order, which was great, but a bit on the salty side. Takoyaki was hot (this was good) and creamy on the inside. For ramen, I was recommended the Bonnie Bonito, a seasonal addition to the menu. This fish flavored broth had the perfect umami notes, while the noodles/assorted veggies really added some body. Looks like a hole in the wall and it's pretty true. Very small inside. Wait was about 45 mins at 1 PM on a Tuesday which wasn't terrible but still a lot for the afternoon. Probably crowded because it's in midtown (lots of tourists in the area). Food was sub-par, unfortunately. Started with the Goma Q which was a cucumber salad which was VERY salty. The flavor was hypothetically good if the salt was decreased. The takoyaki was not good at all. Very doughy and mushy on the inside with barely any octopus. The unagi rice roll was lacking flavor. Thankfully, the ramen was good! The broth was flavorful despite it being vegetarian. We did add spice to it (we got it on the side in order to control the spice). It was very large and very filling. Tied for my favorite Ramen in NYC with Kushi Kushi Yaki. I prefer the food at this location over Cooper Square although the latter has a more fun downtown vibe. This location seems more traditional. But the Ramen is incredible. I think the real differentiator is the complex broth which is thick and varied and amazing. The noodles are good but think they could be improved. However, this doesn't hurt the five star rating for me since I think it's up there with the best I've had. read more

Every time I visit New York I have to stop for ramen. Totto is my favorite and I was hoping to try Tonchin, but the wait was 3 hours long and my brother and I were getting hungry. I adore Ipuddo! I've been to locations in London, Berkeley, CA and a couple in NYC! It's pretty much my favorite ramen of all time. This 5th Avenue location is small with no outdoor seating. They require photo ID and proof of vaccination to get in with no exceptions. We came around 4pm on Saturday and had a 10-15 minute wait for seating. We ordered the veggie and shrimp buns to start. The veggie bun is delicious! It's a good sized bun made with fried eggplant. It has an excellent crunch and sweet, savory flavor. It melts in your mouth. My friend who had the shrimp bun enjoyed hers too. For ramen, we got the Nirvana Karaka Spicy ramen. It is vegetarian. I added an egg and bakudan. This ramen is heaven! Very flavorful and filling. The thin noodles are buttery and firm. The mushroom paste gives the broth an awesome richness. It's a great portion size too. To drink, we had the lychee 75 cocktail. It is sweet but lovely.
