We have lived in west seattle for years and never tried this place after reading the reviews under the previous owner. Tried it last night and it was outstanding. Bento box was huge and I don't usually order tempura but it was fantastic. Rolls were fresh and tasty. Prices are great too and ordering through the app was simple. Tough crowd! We read the reviews on this place before we came in, and it seemed as though people loved Irashai or they weren't impressed at all. I've tried all the sushi joints in West Seattle and to be honest, none of them are really good...2-3 stars at best. Irashai is legit. We had fresh tasty tuna, Island roll, Dragon roll, a couple bento boxes, a veggie roll and it was great. The service had a couple hiccups, as they just opened and the meals came out kind of staggered instead of all at once-- which is tough when you're dining with children and one or 2 have their meals while the other is still waiting ~ but all things considered I'd definitely say this is the best sushi I've had in West Seattle. There's a great selection of sushi, rolls and and bento boxes. Not the best sushi I've ever had, but definitely solid. We'll definitely be coming back for sure! read more

Honestly I wanted to love this place; the first time I ordered here, there was no tofu in the miso, there was a ton of fish skin left on my several pieces of salmon on my roll. There were no condiments to go, no spicy mayo, no utensils, no chopsticks, and the rolls were mediocre at best. Then I ordered a second time as I tried to give them a second chance and it was worse than the first time!!! Honestly one of the worst experiences I have ever had. We got to the restaurant and waited over 30 minutes to just order. Thing is the restaurant was not busy so I have no idea what was going on. Then we waited over an hour for our food but everybody got it but me. Not sure what was going on but the chef was not even making my food and didn't even acknowledge me. This place is amazing so I'm really disappointed to leave a bad review. The food is always on point. We came in around 5:45 and there were only two other tables. Pretty good for a Saturday. Except we waited 35 minutes for only one of our appetizers. They proceeded to make food for online orders, and the dining room wasn't being served at all. When we noticed it was super quiet, we asked the server to turn the hood fan on in the kitchen. How do you not notice your dining room is filled with smoke? Overall, it wasn't terrible nor was it great. The restaurant is really small but we had no problem seating 2 on a weekday. I read a review about the service being bad, I thought the staff was all really nice so maybe they were just having an off day? The food here is very westernized with random Chinese and Korean dishes tossed into it, so don't come here if you are looking for authentic Japanese. I ordered the chirashi bowl which was different from other chirashi bowls I've had. Like the trend of this restaurant, it was westernized. The bottom was a bed of rice but then they added a layer of greens with some sort of mayo sauce on it? It didn't taste bad but it's definitely not your traditional chirashi bowl. The fish itself tasted fine, it was fresh but like what someone else said, they were huge chunks. It was also all mixed in with that mayo sauce. My friend got the eel over rice. This place might have been good back in the day which would account for the high amount of stars on here but I just left and left more than 80% of my meal still on the plate. To start the service was pretty bad...they were busy since it was Friday night but as I sat and waited for my order to be taken I saw a few tables sitting around waiting for checks to be picked up or what have you. Small operation I get it...I can forgive them for those issues. I put my order in; small sashimi plate and a spicy tuna hand roll and a can of Sprite. Well after about 10 mins after I put my order in the Sprite showed up...then 15 mins more and my spicey tuna hand roll arrived. It was ok..the proportions of the tuna/rice was totally off. The top of the roll was bursting with spicey tuna...this wasn't such a bad thing (but it did tell me the person doing the hand roll didn't have much skill). The flavor was good and it had nice spice. A few mins later the tempura came (first course of the sashimi plater). It was terrible. The shrimp tempura was soft and not hot. It was almost like they were frozen tempura shrimp and they were heated up in an oven on broil to make parts of it crispy. From there the meal didn't get better. The sashimi plate showed up and all the fish cuts were WAY too thick. I bit into the salmon and it had no flavor. Then I tried half of a tuna and blah city. Then I noticed one of the other sashimi pieces on my plate and got pissed. It was a f**king piece of KRAB. Now I know some places use fake crab and it's fine...but usually those places usually have fish that taste like something. Then I sat there and tried to figure out what one of the fish cubes on the right hand side of my plate was...and I smelled it and it had no scent...how the hell does fish have no scent? Even tuna from a can has a scent.... After waiting more than 15 mins for someone to come over and ask how my meal was going I told them it was really bad and explained why....I was really annoyed at this point. Oh and point of reference...the only reason I got anyone's attention was because she was clearing the table next to me and asked if I wanted a box. Then I had to wait around for another 10 mins while the waitress told the owner/sushi chef what the problem was and he cursed me out in Japanese while I waited around for then to figure out what to do about my bill. They gave me a 20% discount on the sashimi plate and my bill came to 31.93 still. I told them what ever...and just ring me out so I could leave and get some thing to eat somewhere else. Over all I won't be back and I encourage everyone else to avoid until they make some changes. read more

We LOVE sushi and we really enjoyed our dinner here. You immediately could tell the staff was thankful to have us there, as they all welcomed us when we arrived. The dining room is small, but has a good layout. It is also much classier on the inside than we expected. Also, very clean! We ordered the salmon, yellowtail, and maguro sushi- all tasted fresh and delicious. Good portions too. We ordered two rolls, the irashai roll (which comes with a bonus 2 shrimp tempura, yum!) and the Albacore Tetakki roll. Both rolls were delicious and a large portion. Both rolls also had a kick, so if you don't like spicy make sure to ask them to tone it down. We had a tough time choosing which rolls to order because they all sounded delicious! Solid, blue-chip Japanese and Korean cuisine in North Admiral. THE ROSES: Pretty much everything we had was done competently. Not spectacular, not bad, but just consistently good. Staff is pleasant and attentive almost (but not quite) to the point of hovering. Tempura is a particular standout; delicately battered, and not the least bit greasy. THE THORNS: No sushi bar. The current layout of the restaurant doesn't allow it, which is a shame. Part of the fun of a sushi restaurant for many is to dine at the bar and interact with the sushi chef. Outside of sushi, the menu is somewhat limited. By trying to cover too many bases (sushi, Japanese, Korean) there are a lot of traditional offerings conspicuously missing. No sukiyaki, limited teriyaki offerings, etc. Staff delivered the bill without offering dessert (TOP TIP: suggesting dessert before offering the bill is not 'upselling'; few people order dessert at the time when they order dinner. Sliding the bill onto the table without offering dessert suggests you want the patron gone...was it something we said?) THE VERDICT: Irashai Sushi is like the journeyman baseball player who can be counted on the consistently give you singles and doubles, but rarely if ever swings for the cheap seats. Mashiko has nothing to worry about, but sometimes, quiet consistency is enough to assure restaurant survival in a neighborhood. They do seem to do a very nice take-out business. But now since we've had this sushi no other sushi taste as good as this place! The main waitress is the sweetest thing and remembers our orders and we're allowed to come through the back door. My friends were going out for sushi and invited me to come along since 1 was running late from work so I decided to come along. I got here before my friends and upon arriving I just stood awkwardly at the door. No one greeted me or anything, you could see the sushi chef in the kitchen just staring at me.. Okay..... So I asked if I grab my own table or do I get seated ? Someone said yes grab your own table, but as I sat down someone else came out and moved me...That was kind of annoying. My friends and I all opted for rolls. I got the King Alaskan salmon roll and the monkey brain appetizer. I've had similar things at other restaurants so I figure it would be good. Both things I ordered ended up being just okay, nothing stood out but they werent bad either. My friends enjoy their rolls and portion was pretty big on certain rolls but I definitely don't think I'll come back here for sushi if I'm ever craving it as there are other options around the Junction. read more

The water tasted a little perfumey to me, girlfriend didn't notice but it was very distinct. I didn't like that...pretty sure I would have remembered spraying something in my mouth too, so it definitely wasn't me. I ordered the red dragon roll, California hand roll and sashimi appetizer (6 pieces of fish). Girlfriend got the spicy roll (can't remember the name) and the agedashi tofu. My roll was pretty good, a little on the spicy side though! It was a California roll with shrimp tempura and spicy salmon on top with tempura bits. The hand roll was my favorite, it wasn't like a "California" roll, they used kaneki (I think, the stringy krab stick). It was just really, really good. I ended up saving it for last. The sashimi was good, the salmon and tuna fresh. The third fish was a white fish and I didn't want to try it. Girlfriend said it was interesting. She liked the spicy roll she ordered (she loves spicy stuff) and said the tofu wasn't bad, it was just really hot (temperature wise). Overall, not a bad experience. Service was pretty good and quick. Might come back, might not, it really depends on the cravings that hit...but since there are a good amount of Japanese spots in our area, I don't know if this is our number one choice. read more

Came here on a Friday night with a friend. Pretty quiet inside, only one other family there while we dined. We started off ordering 2 rolls, a baked california roll and the spicy heart attack and advised the waitress we'd like to hold onto a menu and after we finish our 2 rolls we'll see what else we'd like to order. I'm not sure if it was because they were slow that night, but they were a bit too attentive and hovered quite a bit. They checked on us a few times before we had our sushi, and we eventually just had them take our menu, since she had asked about additional items a few times before we got our food. They are very on top of things with clearing plates as well, almost too quick, since she also asked about my miso soup bowl a few times, that I was slowly sipping on. We were a lil bummed the miso was nearly room temperature upon delivery. Also that they charge $3 for pretty plain tea, which I'm used to being free. The sushi itself was ok. I'm always nervous about sushi that is draped in a lot of sauces, since they're typically hiding the quality of their fish. That's why we initially ordered some basic rolls. The two rolls we ordered were huge, so unfortunately we were too full to order additional rolls. The presentation of the sushi is beautiful for sure, the quality is average, the size is generous but the price compensates for that. I'll definitely be back to try other items on their menu. I just happened to be in West Seattle and in the mood for sushi when Sushi Irashai unfortunately showed up as a 5-star 'New and Hot' restaurant conveniently located near me. Without question, this is the worst sushi I have had in Seattle. I know that's not a great gauge since Seattle has amazing sushi (e.g., Shiro's, Sushi Kashiba, etc.), so let me provide a more telling example. I would rather have gas station sushi from a rural part of Texas during the middle of their summer than eat here again. While I do believe there is a refined craft to making sushi, I don't believe it needs to be imported directly from 'Jiro Dreams of Sushi', but the tomahawk steak-sized pieces of sushi are almost impossible to fit into one's mouth. I am sincerely hoping the quality of their fish was good and I should know within the next few hours, but there were a couple of moments where I thought I might lose it. I think Sushi Irashai does a great job of catering to an American palate; large portions with lots of sauce covering up the taste of fish, but I will never eat here again nor would I suggest anyone else to do so. read more
