Toshio's Teriayki is a favorite, no-frills diner cranking out Teriyaki, Katsu, and Tempura plates made-to-order. Its been around for decades and is somewhat legendary for the South Seattle food scene. We came here for takeout lunch after morning cemetery visits for relatives. Parking spots do exist in front of the restaurant but they are fairly tight. The location is right on super-busy Rainier Ave after all. As for the food, the Chicken Teriyaki is pretty good. Giant portions, affordable, and they make the teriyaki sauce and salad dressing from scratch. The chicken is skin-on, dark meat, and mostly juicy but also very thick. The flavors did not permeate throughout the meat as much as I like, but there was plenty of flavor on the skin. A good place for fast takeout. This is a classic Seattle teriyaki spot on Rainier Ave that nearly every Seattle native I know has tried at least once in their life, mostly when they were little. I'm a Seattle native too yet I tried here for their first time along with two other friends - who also haven't had here - on a Saturday noon for lunch. It's peak lunch hour so all dine-in seating was nearly taken, and there was a small line to get food too. It's a very casual environment here and you can hear and see the kitchen behind the counter preparing all the food. Staff behind the counter was so kind and my friends and I got to chat with one of them a little bit while placing our orders. I got their chicken and gyoza combo, and asked for the sauce to be on top of my meat. Portions are generous for everything here, including the chicken, rice and even the gyoza. There's a ton of sauce both on the chicken and the salad, though I didn't mind that. Chicken was tender, piping hot and relatively sweet with the sauce, but that's where the rice comes in to balance the taste. Gyozas are standard but came really hot with some sauce on the side. Seating is a little sticky, and you do need to bus your own table. But we all came out full and pretty satisfied with what we had. I'm definitely coming back here for more of their stuff! read more

Honestly the worst teriyaki I've ever tried and as someone who grew up here idk how this place stays open lmao. First off the only thing bf oof was the gyoza I'll give them that, the crunch was good and fresh but lacking flavor lmao super bland The teriyaki chicken itself was super rubbery and not at all juicy nor flavorful, I ordered spicy for my plate and the spice was non existent this coming from someone who has a low tolerance for spice. The rice was honestly the most disappointing I felt like I had a scoop of rice pudding or mushy rice instead of the proper texture and it came from a rice cooker so maybe they just overcook it??? Idk Service was so mid although I came in 30 before closing, fast service and fresh food but barely any customer service lol idk it's not for everyone but I definitely would not eat here again nor recommend this place to anybody craving teriyaki save your money and go elsewhere read more

Nostalgic spot from when I was in highschool! This was everyone's goto spot and I had to take my niece here. It's still in the same spot but the building was upgraded (still small space inside) The owners were here and so nice and engaging! They cooked the food super fast and of course it was still delicious. The prices have gone up , but that's the name of the game in seattle. Enjoyed going back there after all these years! read more

Classic Seattle teriyaki. I got the regular chicken teriyaki and opted for sauce on top of rice too, as that seems to be the way to do it. It was pretty huge portions for $14+tax, but they also tack on a 50 cent surcharge for credit cards. You can get it for here or to-go. The chicken actually has some skin which is good, as it was not fatty and not burnt. The chicken definitely is excellent. The salad was way too saucy that you're basically eating sauce, so if I return, I will have to make sure they don't put that much sauce. The rice is good, with the teriyaki sauce quite sweet. The seating is a bit sticky and worn out, but it didn't significantly deter from dining in. Just make sure to bring a change of clothes as the grill smoke soaks up intensely with poor ventilation so you'll smell strongly of BBQ after eating! read more

Accidentally was in the area. So some good reviews on this place. Food was bad. Service was bad. First and last time no doubt.

Right when I walked in, not a hi, not a greeting not even a smile from the lady working at the front. It almost felt like it was an annoyance for me being there to have her serve. As someone who has worked in customer service before, this experience left a lasting impression to me that although the food is good the unfortunate interaction with the workers here left a sour taste in my mouth that I do not wish to come back. After I politely said thank you to the man who gave me my bag of food, not even a you're welcome but a snub response back. Tip for the business owners and workers there, if you want to continue getting business from your customers, please be reminded that it's not the just the food that sells but the level of respect you show to those supporting your business in wanting to see it thrive. read more

Hmm, I still think this is better than the rest. There are some places that make a really good spicy teriyaki, but this place pumps out the best basic teriyaki. It's never too salty, never too sweet and never overcooked and dried out. It's the godfather. read more

I've been coming here for years and it was my favorite teriyaki, but unfortunately the quality has gone down :( this place was easily a 5 star place a couple years back in the day. The chicken still has good grill flavor and comes with the thigh with skin on top with it which is nice for those who like it. The chicken used to be really soft, rotisserie like but it's really chewy now with less soy/ teriyaki flavor. The sauce is more like a gravy than a sauce and i wish it had a little more sweetness or depth to it. There's a hefty amount of chicken though i would say 2-3 chicken thigh's worth. Salad was kind of wet still and not dried all the way so it was not as crunchy as could be and the salad dressing is more mayo heavy which isn't bad or good. Overall i'm sad to see the place decline in quality but i will definitely be back to try again because it always has been my favorite. read more

Toshio's is still pumping out gold standard teriyaki from their spot on Rainier. You can't go wrong with the standard chicken teriyaki. It's so flavorful, so juicy, has just the right amount of char from the grill, the portion is generous, and the sauce is plentiful and delicious. Plus the chicken comes with the skin on which makes it even better. The fact that it's still sub-$15 in this economy is incredible, and if you're not a huge eater you can honestly split one portion into two meals. These people try so hard and mean so well. I really wanted to like their teriyaki. A few years ago, it was quite good (I used to eat their food regularly). Sadly, the teriyaki just isn't that good anymore. Now, it's gotten more expensive and the quality has fallen off -- what a shame. They still get a lot of construction workers buying their lunch there, but not so many people driving to their restaurant as a destination. The people are wonderful. The food, not so much -- here are the details from my most recent visit. The gyoza was a little greasy and ok, but each piece was small (more greasy surface area, less filling inside) -- it's not the amount of food that I care about, but the affect of small sized gyoza on the ratio of greasy covering to filling. Larger gyoza are better in this regard. The chicken was a little dry. The beef was chewy and of really poor quality - they used to have better beef, but this was a waste of money. The rice was heavy and sticky and barely warm. The teriyaki and the rice were drowned in cloyingly sweet teriyaki sauce. The only thing that has improved over the years is the salad. And then there's another annoyance -- the cost of the items on the menu, didn't match the total on my charge slip -- there was $1.15 discrepancy (and tax was itemized, so that's not it). I don't know if that's a credit card fee, a bag fee or what, but I really don't like being charged for things without notification. It would be far better to get an itemized receipt with the details than to be annoyed by the tax + the items purchased + tip don't add up to the amount charged. I'll probably go back - I want to give support these wonderful people in their business -- but it's not because I want their teriyaki. read more

Sitting on a little corner, there isn't much parking in front or much seating inside, most of the people that ordered seemed to order for to-go. Chicken Yakisoba 3.5/5 - $16.19+tax&tip. Whether eating in or taking out, they provide food in takeout containers. The yakisoba is slightly tangy and mildly sweet due to the Japanese Worcestershire in the sauce, if you aren't use to this then it might be a little off putting. For vegetables, it includes carrots and cabbage which aren't too overcooked. The chicken was cut into small chucks, some a little too small but texture of the larger pieces were bouncy and juicy. I probably wouldn't get the yakisoba again but definitely would want to get the chicken teriyaki. My friends got the chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki and curry beef. I'd also rank them in terms of deliciousness in that order. Juicy chicken atop rice (they ask if you'd like teriyaki sauce on your rice, yes is the way to go!) The beef was fairly tender and tasty but for the price difference, I'd still go for chicken. The curry beef was too salty by itself and needed the rice to mediate, it tasted more like an Indian curry powder, heavier on the turmeric compared to other curries. I've never encountered a complimentary salad from a teriyaki place in WA that I didn't like, this is no exception. Slightly sweet over a handful of lettuce, my complaint there is I wish there was more salad. Passed by this many place too many times to not finally try it out. Old and run down but food was pretty great. Good standard teriyaki. Could've been grilled a little more (needs that char flavor) but it was still pretty solid. I also liked that they put teriyaki sauce on the rice for us too. The rice, however, was definitely gummy, and not the good rice that has nice flavor, more cheap and flavorless tasting. It was also pretty expensive compared to my local spots, especially since we asked for extra meat and I wouldve liked the meal to not cost over 25 dollars since teriyaki was always meant to be a cheap meal. I'm very disappointed, other locations provide a bigger portion. At this location they use half side of the container for greens, one quarter for the chicken and the other quarter for the rice. At other locations or other teriyaki businesses, they serve the rice balls on one half and the chicken on the other half. The greens always go "on the side" inside a small container. What is similar...which is very odd, it's the price...$14 - $16. Also they grilled the chicken WITH SKIN...just awful. read more

Finally! Decided to get lunch at this long established teriyaki place on Rainer Street. A few Instagram foodies I follow who showcase Seattle eateries have recommended this spot for teriyaki and more. Small family run business with excellent vibes. All orders made to go. Super friendly service with a smile. You can eat inside or outside at the several tables. If you eat there it is tight as it is small. I noticed a small area with chairs and no tables. Most likely for people waiting for to go orders. I ordered a combination plate with teriyaki chicken and vegetable tempura. The rice is very sticky. The chicken is charred from being grilled and covered in a teriyaki sauce. The skin left on. Not complaining, I loved it. The side salad had a white sauce that had a delicious sesame flavor. The vegetable tempura was ok, maybe to go it loses some crispiness. But the batter was flavorful and I ate all of it! Dipped in the sauce it definitely satisfied my craving. Parking lot here is small but manageable. Street parking nearby looks tricky. It's worth it. Nice price point too for the amount of food. Do it! Come here. Eat well. SYOY! read more

When we first got here there was a lot of people getting take out and mobile orders. We thought this was a good sign but sadly that's the last time I'll use the word good for this review. It took a long time just to order, the prices are quite high for what you get and they have charges for everything from refills, to CC charges, to extra sauces, etc. There was 6 in our group and there is very little seating inside but since it was hot and they had no AC, we decided to eat outside. Once we got our food two of the people in our group had enough after one or two bites. The sauce is odd, it's very sweet, and def not teriyaki flavor that I've had before. I decided to power through and ate about half of my plate which was about as much as any one person in our group was able to get through. We should of called ahead of time. That is what normally people do. I usually just stick to the basic chicken teriyaki and that is what I got. I do know Toshio's have couple different location. Because I always drove past the Lynnwood one. They have daily special for Chicken teriyaki for $6.99 but not this location. The price went up a bit but whatever, as long the food is good that's what it matters. Surprisingly, their chicken is really good. Full of flavor and pretty fair portion as well. The gyoza was yummy and perfectly cooked and the chicken was delicious. I love how they didn't remove the skin. However, the salad dressing was a bit bland and rice was way too soggy. Ugh I hate to be the one to have to leave this kind of review, but I want to be honest and fair about my experience. I will start by saying that the woman who helped me was very nice and lovely. I believe she was the owner but I'm not sure. But regardless of the red fact, she was nice to interact with for sure! She got my phone order correct and had it waiting for me at the front when I got there. Another positive is the inside is nice and appears clean. I was only in there for a quick second, but upon looking around, it seemed like it could be a nice place to sit down and eat. However, I was pretty disappointed with the food. I ordered a regular teriyaki chicken. And I guess I'll start with the sauce, it is very much lacking flavor and not a common representation of what I would expect teriyaki sauce to taste like. I don't know if there was a fluke in this batch, but it just lacked traditional flavor. I could use some soy sauce and maybe some garlic or something. I'm not the expert but I've made teriyaki sauce before and I would say I would maybe start there. But yeah, it's just it just wasn't good sauce. Now onto the chicken. That chicken also had no flavor whatsoever. And I got multiple pieces that almost had a stale texture to them like they were old or something. They were also some very soft textured pieces and maybe wonder if maybe they kind of mixed the two together? But I could definitely tell that there were some older pieces in there. AND my 13 year old also told me that his was stale. He usually would eat a whole thing of teriyaki chicken and rice in one sitting, he LOVES himself some teriyaki chicken but this he barely put a dent in it. So that also speaks volumes and confirms my point of view as well. So when you combined no flavor in the sauce and no flavor in the chicken, it was a very bland experience. I'm sorry, but it just wasn't good. I was reading somebody's review on here and they had said that the quality of changed in the last couple of years and I think I would have to piggyback on that. I've been to this place before years ago and as a younger child and they were absolutely delicious! It was one of my favorite places to go for dinner. But now I don't think I will return nor would I recommend it to anybody at this point in time. But this is my experience and I felt the need to share it because I'm not gonna finish this meal that I bought. I definitely tried to look past the flaws, but it's just not good. And I feel bad saying this but at the same time I would recommend saving your money. And to the company, I would definitely recommend marinating the meat and also looking into a new recipe for the sauce. Also throw away old meat and start fresh each day! I'm not sure what's changed in the last few years, but I wish they'd go back to what it used to be. I could give it a five star if it was back to the quality it was at before. I'm very disappointed with this place. They use to serve such delicious meals. It's hard to understand how this place went south! My teriyaki was terrible the skin was soggy. It was my worst meal I have ever had at Toshio's. Even the Miso soup tasted bad. They no longer have indoor serve and the meals are put in styrofoam containers with steamers away that delicious crispy skin and kills the freshness. Sadly this was my last time coming here. This place is busyyyyyy during dinner. They have setup so they can take orders from the window with a line down the side of the building and waiting around the parking lot. The parking spaces in front of the building are limited and often full because of the limited spaces but there is easy access to street parking along the street in the back. The service is very nice and friendly with smiles all around. They make jokes and are very conversational. They are accommodating to special orders and you can really tell they are trying to move as quickly as they can as a team. The menu is located on the window to the left of the ordering window but they expect you to call in your order before you arrive. Not to say you cannot order from the window but it will definitely be faster if you call first and just pick up. Plus it is cold outside these days so win win for you and them. There are a bunch of different dishes as well as a bunch of combo plates. Combo plates are perfect if you are like me and want to try multiple dishes. I ended up with the chicken teriyaki & beef combo with a side of gyoza. The gyoza comes out a perfect golden brown, perfectly fried and crispy. The chicken teriyaki and beef combo come out juicy and with a medium amount of sauce. If you are a saucy person, definitely order extra. I saw a lot of people doing that. But in my opinion if you want to be able to taste the meat, the amount of sauce that comes with is just fine. Each meal comes with rice and salad. The salad is nothing impressive but you simple teriyaki place salad with a creamy thin dressing. I like it but I noticed others also nix it and just get extra rice. Would I go back again? Definitely. I've been coming to Toshi's since high school for their Chicken Teriyaki. Personally, I think one order can be shared between two people. The portions are decently sized. The chicken is tender and juicy with some skin melting off it. Each order comes with two scoops of rice and salad. You can request for the teriyaki sauce on top of the rice, or on the side. If you want something crunchy, consider ordering the Chicken Katsu! During this COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurant is closed for indoor dining, but you can order over the phone or approach the window they have propped open. Toshi's parking lot is small and the restaurant sits next to the I-90 entrance on Rainier, which sees a lot of traffic. read more

I came here after playing a morning of sports and was quite hungry, and Toshio's did not disappoint! It was slightly difficult to figure out how to order, since the doors are closed for covid. We walked around the building and found the (literal) window they were taking and handing out orders from. I got the chicken teriyaki, which came with rice and a side salad. I didn't like all the dressing on the salad - would have been better to have given it on the side, but the salad isn't the point of the meal here. The chicken was very tender and juicy, and the sauce was very tasty. The rice tasted great soaked in the sauce and I easily finished the whole meal. I've learned that Teriyaki is the thing in Seattle. Like Pizza is to New York and Cheesesteaks to Philly. My buddy suggested I visit Toshio's. And damn that was the best chicken teriyaki I've ever had no lie. The service could use a little work but the product itself was top tier. Def never had teriyaki like that back home in Cali. I've been going here since I was in high school, and it has been the exact same since. I've steered away once from anything but the chicken teriyaki, and was not happy. So, basically, STICK TO THE CHICKEN TERIYAKI... ask to put the sauce on the rice if you want that (that's how I like it). The way they grill the chicken thigh is so good. Service was fine.
