I'm going into this review very torn. On the one hand, the food here is about as good as you'll get for Caribbean food in Greenville. That being said, if you've been to big cities with really good Caribbean food I think you'll be a bit disappointed. It's a hole in the wall establishment so the ambiance is meh. Counter and a few tables. The first time I came the gentleman behind the counter was friendly but came off a little odd. I was also surprised I couldn't order oxtail at lunch. You can only get dinner size options for oxtail. I got jerk chicken which came with rice and peas (beans) as it should. Food tasted good and a decent portion for the price but nothing about it blew me away. The second time I came was a bit more disturbing. There was a large table of ladies eating lunch and a worker (maybe the owner) came out and started boisterously insisting that every person there go online and rate the restaurant because, "that's how we get our business." I mean, okay bro, but that's excessive and not an attractive ambiance for folks just trying to eat lunch. Conclusion - best Caribbean in Greenville that I've had but mediocre if you've been to somewhere really good. It'll scratch the itch but I'm not rushing to go back. read more

All I did was casually stop by prior to work to pick up some food on the go. I actually didnt even try it until several hours later and DANG THIS FOOD WAS BANGIN'. So worth the price (I believe it was around $8-$10) and it seemed to be family-owned and operated. There's inside seating and its made to order so once you pay, you may need to wait for about 5-10mins to receive your food. It was interesting to see people from all different cultures patiently waiting for their food. It has a very homey feel to it. Like "yeah, just grab the water from the fridge" type of place. The fact that it's a small place doesn't detract from the huge flavor. First time in, I had the Jerk chicken and it was fantastic. Very small counter service Jamaican restaurant. They have 3 two top tables and two four top tables. I was dining in and only two tables were occupied, both were two tops and it was lunchtime Tuesday. There were several "to-go" orders and I got the impression that "to-go" is the norm. Everything is ordered at the counter and then you are called up to get the order. Lunch specials come with a drink and everything is served in styrofoam containers, both food and drink. My order was the Jerk Chicken special. This was a skin-on thigh and leg, both halved, with jerk seasoning. The jerk seasoning was a dry rub followed by a jerk wet sauce. RIce, peas, cabbage and a small fried plantain were the sides. The heat level and flavor of the chicken was very good. My only issue is that the leg and thigh were smaller, so the bone to meat ratio was heavily bone to less meat. The rice was a kind of dirty rice, probably some black bean involved, though I saw no black beans, but flavorful. The cabbage was marinated and I tasted what seemed to be a hint of coconut flavor, but also this was good. I'm unsure where the peas were in the dish, but they were supposed to be involved. The portion size was decent. I chose the tropical lemonade option, which was sweet and sort of papaya flavored, but also good. The interior is seriously sparse. Several 8x10 framed photos of Jamaican athletes or celebrities or cultural figures were on the walls, but it was a low-budget attempt to have something representative on the wall. I would return here since the flavors were very good, but probably will do as the majority of the lunch crowd I witnessed and order "to-go." read more

I went there on 7/24, I ordered a medium curry goat. It came with plantains, cabbage, and rice & peas. They were friendly when I walked in and greeted me and treated me like family. For the size of food I got, my plate was full with plenty of meat and gravy and was hot and fresh. The spice and flavor level was on 10. I love everything about it. I eat Jamaican food often so I can recognize the good from the bad and this place was a 10/10 based on my experience. read more

Me and seven other guys get together every Thursday for lunch at 11:30 AM. We've been doing this for a little over three years. Each week one of the guys picks a new restaurant that we haven't been to, to go to the next week. This was the first time we had gone to Irie Caribbean. As soon as we walked in the door and saw how filthy looking the place was, we knew there was no way we were going to eat there. I have no idea how good their food is or how bad it is but if judging the food by the cleanliness of the restaurant, it can't be too good. We will never go back. read more

Trying to support black owned business but a Young guy wearing glasses was RUDE, I asked for a chicken combination and he said WE DONT do that here , downtown does that! As I viewed the menu I saw where a side order of curry, jerk, chicken etc could be brought as a side ...... so instead of him telling me what options I have for instance I could've ordered a medium curry chicken with a side of stewed chicken...... I got a kid with a RUDE demeanor and attitude telling me what 'they' AINT goin do etc!!! read more

Great customer service. Oxtails well worth the price. Very tender, well seasoned, and you're given a lot for the price. I would give them 5 stars, but the plantains were under the oxtails and therefore got fully covered by the sauce... that's the only downside to the entire dish. We will visit again. For Father's Day, our son treated us to a taste-off between meals from the two Jamaican restaurants we frequent. It was a close contest but Irie Caribbean won -- the jerk chicken was wonderful with the accompanying jerk sauce (and some additional Scotch bonnet sauce which is to be eaten sparingly). Curry chicken and brown stew were both incredible. The sides of rice, cabbage, and plantain were better than the competition. The owner at Irie is a delight and truly enjoys the food he is preparing.
