It has a spacious outdoor play area with games, fun photo props, and an old Western wagon that kids can climb on and explore. After a long day in the car during our road trip, my kids had an amazing time playing while we waited for our meal. There is also indoor seating available. The food was delicious, and the portions were large and very filling. Meals were around $20 each , which felt like a fair value for the quality and portion size. We visited Iron Horse Restaurant during our Labor Day weekend stay in Kanab and made a reservation in advance for a party of six, including our friends and their two young daughters. I really wanted to love this restaurant because the Western atmosphere is fantastic and certainly draws you in. Unfortunately, our overall dining experience fell considerably short. I want to begin with the positive. Nancy, who I believe is either the owner or manager, was remarkable--friendly, approachable, easy to communicate with, and genuinely willing to acknowledge areas where the restaurant could improve. I have tremendous respect for that kind of humility in management. She was also gracious enough to waive the corkage fee for the bottle of wine we brought. Our biggest problem was the steaks. Our server, Dwayne, explained that the steaks are cut in-house. The quality of the beef itself seemed perfectly decent, but unfortunately the cutting and preparation were not. My wife and one of our friends ordered ribeyes, while I ordered the baseball-cut top sirloin. The steaks were extremely chewy and difficult to eat. If a restaurant is going to butcher steaks in-house, proper cutting technique and trimming are critical. Based on what we received, I strongly believe additional training and oversight are needed in this area. Dwayne initially offered to replace the steaks or provide a discount. We hate wasting food, so rather than sending several steaks back and having them thrown away, we tried our best to eat what we could. When the bill arrived, however, only approximately 10% had been discounted. Considering that replacement steaks had been offered because of the problem, I found that resolution disappointing. There were also service inconsistencies. At one point, Dwayne returned roughly 10 minutes after taking our order and asked how our food was, even though we were still waiting for our salads and hadn't received our entrées. We were also charged for chips and dip that we had never ordered. Nancy had brought them to the table, and we specifically mentioned that we hadn't ordered them, yet the charge nevertheless appeared on our bill. To be fair, not everything was disappointing. The Caesar salad was actually one of the highlights of the evening and was very good. My friend's Frank Sinatra Burger was also good, and he enjoyed it. So there are clearly things coming out of this kitchen that work. Our total was close to $200 including gratuity, and unfortunately several members of our party left feeling that the meal simply didn't justify the expense. I had told Nancy that I would leave a good review, and I sincerely intended to do so. But I also believe reviews have to honestly reflect the experience, both good and bad. Nancy herself impressed me tremendously; the Western atmosphere is fun; and there are some good items on the menu. The restaurant's shortcomings, however, particularly with steak preparation, service follow-through, and billing accuracy, need attention. Unfortunately, we're leaving Kanab and won't have an opportunity to give Iron Horse another try on this trip. I sincerely wish Nancy and her team the very best. She clearly cares about the business, and I hope she takes this feedback in the constructive spirit in which it is intended. With better training, stronger quality control, and more consistent service, this restaurant has the potential to deliver an experience that matches its wonderful atmosphere. read more

This place was decent. I found a common theme in this city that the outside of the buildings look really cool and the interior is underwhelming. The food was all good. I enjoyed the smoked chicken, especially. The brisket was very tender. Service was kind and quick. No complaints. One odd thing is that me and another guest at the table both ordered an extra side of brisket to go along with our meals and they served it on the same platter. When it was about half gone and I had asked for my side, they said they put both portions on the same dish and that is just weird and made it awkward. However, they did bring me an extra little cup of brisket. Still odd that they would do that. The atmosphere was cool, but the live entertainment that night was singing very depressing songs which honestly just mismatched the vibe of the whole restaurant and ruined the mood. Happy I tried Iron Horse, but probably wouldn't come back between the odd service and the sad entertainment not matching with the expected vibe of the place. We were in the area for the balloon festival they had, weather was unexpected! We stopped by Iron Horse for a late lunch, service was good. The food wasn't bad. The restaurant seemed clean. It was cute that they have like a little ghost town set up outside, they have a lot of seating inside and outside. The restrooms are outside...and heated! There is a door to go in to a gift shop in the same space as the entrance to the dining area. There was a group of us and our waitress was on top of it, had no problem splitting the checks and stayed organized so that she could easily do so! I'd love to give it 5 stars, but my brisket plate was just okay. Two small pieces, the mac and cheese was pretty simple, the toast was just not toasty...the slices of brisket I was given were good. And I did enjoy the sweet potato with cinnamon and brown sugar. My husband enjoyed his Frank Sinatra burger and fries. So we were not disappointed with Iron Horse at all, we just didn't walk away impressed either. Not much else in the area so with limited options they don't really need to go all out. read more

This was my second meal at Iron Horse, 3 years apart. We sat inside this time, next to the hilarious raccoon table. Duane was awesome, very attentive and made mild conversation with us. I had the salmon, daughter had the NY Strip, and hubby got the last brisket of the night. Everything was delicious and I'm very happy we came back to this restaurant. A family friendly restaurant with a western theme and some special guests (pictured) made the ambience lively and enjoyable. Sadly, the food fell short of what I was hoping for. I opted for the country fried steak with mash and gravy, and seasonal veg. The steak was tough, overly chewy, and inedible in places (lots of gristle), but the mash and veggies were good. This place is an outdated little relic in Kanab. Definitely has some cool western history to it. With some love this restaurant would be a hot spot in town. The customer service was outstanding. We got there at 8:26 and they closed at 9. I asked if it's too late and they were so welcoming and said absolutely not. I give an extra kudos to them because they got a call ahead about some rodeo group that was gonna come just after 9. They kept the place open to feed them. And it was only MAYBE 12 people. Right at 9 a couple who obviously just finished hiking walked in. They told them they were normally closed by this time but they're lucky because they decided to stay open a little longer for another group so they'll serve them too. I thought that was pretty awesome because it takes an entire team of staff to be cool with staying later. And no one was disgruntled about it. All were happy. The food was good. And the pricing was decent. The portion sizes were decent. I would definitely go again while in Kanab. But it's nothing special food wise. Long weekend with Travel around the state and stopped into the Iron Horse for a late lunch. Now this place is all about BBQ but could not resist an opportunity for some pastrami and the waitress liked it and since she was from back east had to give it a try. It was ok although the amount of meat was light and use to it being greasier/juicier. Back east it would have been piled high. It came with coleslaw and the other meal was fish and chips, was ok, think black bear is better. Also ordered onion rings and chicken wings to-go for a "by the fire" snack, both were good. Service was excellent and if back down this way will give the BBQ a try. This place seems like it's a big hit on weekends, indoor and outdoor seating plus bar area. What a treat! The ambiance was perfect. A picture of John Wayne by our table. What more could you want? The service was amazing. A bus pulled up just before we got seated and we still felt welcome and taken great care of. We chose to have the pulled pork sandwich. First of all, the coleslaw was the best. Well done to the chef who made it. The pulled pork was so moist and full of flavor. The sauces they offer are a proper Carolina sauce which was full of vinegar and my favorite the sweet sauce that was so smoky. The fries were cooked so wonderfully. Cute place to eat. Large area but still may have a wait due to Waiters. They have a gift shop to browse while waiting. We ordered the chicken and ribs platter. The chicken breast was smothered, was really good but not the ribs. They covered the ribs in a rub. Really thick seasoning! We could not even hardly eat them. Entering the Ironhorse property it looks like a scene from the wild west.  Inside I admired the decor and breathed in the scent of bbq.  I relaxed to the flavor of soda water with a hint of lemon.  Refreshing after a long day seeing the sights at Zion National Park.  It was lovely there as it had snowed the day before and now the snow was melting.  Back to my meal. Onion rings had a crispy beer batter outside with tender onions inside.  Loved the fried onion flavor mixed with the salty beer batter. French fries were crispy and had a nice fried potato flavor. Pork ribs were tender and moist except for the part at the end.  Loved the black peppercorns used in the dry rub.  Nice smoky flavor from being smoked in a hi tech smoker with wood pellets. Desert was amazing.  Vanilla ice cream was creamy and full of sweet vanilla flavor.  Graham crackers were fresh and delicious.  Marshmallow was sweet and delicious.  Better than the Kraft Marshmallows I had when I was a kid.  Chocolate cake was extremely rich and I needed a drink after the chocolate overload. 45 min wait on a Saturday night, which truthfully isn't too bad for a small town. We were seated basically at their "closing time", which meant we needed to order basically immediately before the kitchen closed. Our server was extremely polite and maybe a bit overwhelmed with the amount of tables he had. He was quick both literally and figuratively, but toward the end of our meal when he was less busy he became much more personable and relaxed. The draft root beer is YUMMY! The wings were delicious, the bacon cheeseburger was tasty, and the pulled pork sandwich was mopped by my fiancé. I want to start by saying our server was a very sweet young lady who did what she could to take care of us. She was attentive and very apologetic when we told her our concerns. The issues we had are: The salads...it was as if the slimy lettuce was hidden at the bottom of the salad with fresh(er) lettuce on top. Pretty disgusting to get halfway through a salad and find that. The server removed the salads from the bill, but the damage was done. The brisket was said to be smoked, but I swear it was cooked in a crockpot. It was dry, and it was chopped up and shredded....never seen brisket served that way. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. We're unlikely to go here again, if we're ever in Kanab again, which is likely LOL. I'd give this place two stars, and one of them is solely for the server. She really was a gem read more

Our tour group stopped here for a lunch at 2pm. Not busy at all it was a buffet for us. They have off the menu ordering but we didn't have time. The soup of the day was a veggie pasta and nice and hot. The mashed potatoes were nicely warmed but then everything else was mildly warmed. The brisket and shredded pork would have been better had they been hot. BBQ sauce at the table was tasty. The mixed veggies were sad. Cornbread looked good but didn't have room for it. Wanting a good dining experience in Knab last night. We both ordered the Country Fried Steak with 2 side dishes. As I was trying to cut my steak and eat it it wouldn't even cut through with a steak knife. So much gristle. My husband said his was fine and didn't seem tough. I kept trying to eat my steak and had to spit out pieces as I could not chew them up. I gave up. My husband tried a piece and did the same as me and had to spit it out. He said we should report it. We told our waiter and he could see that I hadn't eaten my steak. He said he would see what management would do. I told him I would be okay with paying for the side dishes and he said management doesn't work that way. He came back with an offer of ice cream. I told him I couldn't take ice cream. He offered dessert and I got a very small slice of cheese cake to go. The side dishes were good and the service was good. I wasn't asking for a free meal, just to pay for side dishes.
