Maybe it was a bad day. Maybe it was the *time* of day (2 or 3 in the afternoon, so, post-lunch rush). Maybe it was just the quiche. Maybe it was just the quiche *that day*. Maybe it's because I ordered the food to be delivered, rather than eating on site. What ever could be the explanation, the reality is, I was disappointed. I ordered two slices of the Quiche Lorraine at six bucks a piece. I figured I'd have one for dinner, and one for breakfast the next day. For late lunch, I ordered the chicken pot pie strudel sandwich, which was $9.00. The strudel sandwich was attractive and delicious. No complaints about the portion size or the flavor or the appearance. I think it should have come with some token side for $9.00, like maybe a bunch of grapes or a small green salad or something. The Quiche Lorraine should have come with some kind of side as well, but that wouldn't have made it any more palatable. It tasted old, and there was very little egg and a thin, overcooked, greasy crust. With the good reviews thus far, I really expected better. read more

I dropped by for a quick lunch and ordered the porketta sandwich with a graham flour muffin for dessert. I got the sandwich with giardiniera at the suggestion of the server. The sandwich was really great; tender pork, oozing melted cheese, and a little crisp vinegar-y crunch from the giardiniera. As another reviewer mentioned, the baguette bread was what you want - crisp outer crust with soft insides and a buttery good flavor. I'd never had a graham flour muffin, so I tried one and it was sweet enough to balance out the whole-wheat "good for you" and be a nice treat. Most importantly the service was excellent. The people behind the counter were friendly and super-helpful with suggestions. Both of the staff stopped by my table to see if everything was to my satisfaction or if I needed anything else. I'll definitely be dropping by Sunrise again. I may have to buy some items from their market section to take home and cook. read more

Great food, and friendly staff. I got the Cuban which was fantastic. The porketta was so delicate/tender and the ham sliced with a nice thin cut. It also had the classic Cuban swiss, pickles, and mustard which is expected, and am glad they stuck to the script. The baguette it came on had a lovely outer crust with soft insides that had just the right pull as you took a bite. I also had the chilli, which was just basic chilli, but nevertheless delicious. I can't wait to come back and have the stright up porketta sandwich! They also have they're own little market, featuring local foods, house pastas, and of you're looking to impress a date without the skills to cook, prepared frozen dishes such as canalonni, pizza, quiche, and desserts. In short, this place keeps it classic, and does classic very well. read more

Good little Italian café. Had the Porketta salad and wife had the chicken pot pie strudel. The strudel was all puff pastry and not much chicken pot pie in the middle. Flavors were average. This place was dead at noon on a Thursday. We were the only people eating in the place that day. The place offers some refrigerated Italian bakery items made in the store. Much of the inventory looked like it had been in there awhile. This place has been open for a year. It's too non-descript and average to last another year. read more

I'm from the Iron Range and it new restaurant is a treat (but you don't have to be from the Range to appreciate it.) We had the cabbage rolls which were served with a large, fresh salad and a yummy hot sandwich served with delicious fries. The owner is a St Thomas grad from the Forti Sunrise Bakery Family in Hibbing. That bakery is famous for its pasties, potica and other ethnic baked goods. You can buy these frozen items to take home and enjoy later. Bravo! read more

The patio is lovely. This is the second time we have been there this summer. My one daughter loves the chicken wings. Other had the pesto sandwich with chicken and was very happy. I usually get the Cubano, but decided to try the new jerk chicken sandwich on the menu. That's where the disappointment happened. I asked for no onions. Of course it came with them. I love heat, but this is just hot with no depth. Told the coleslaw on it amazing, but couldn't taste it. Realized when I opened other half I brought home, they had not put the provolone on it. That may have helped. Will go again, but stick with the one I love. read more

This place just opened about two blocks from our apartment and we're so glad it's here. We've eaten here twice so far and the service and food have been great both times. Really nice interior and a few outside tables for sunny days. Pro tip: the dry rub boneless wings are insanely delicious. read more

My dad is from the Iron Range, and every time we went up to visit grandma, she'd have Porketta waiting for us. Tom and his crew at Sunrise have Porketta which tastes just like my grandma used to make. I've had the sandwich while dining there and I've purchased uncooked Porketta and slow-cooked it at home. My family has been to the Iron Ranger several times for the very authentic Hibbing fare. We just hosted a large family party of all Iron Rangers in what could not have been a more perfect location. The space was perfect for our party of 35 and the staff was perfectly on top of our food/timing and drinks. Tom is a genuinely nice guy and was incredibly accommodating for our party and needs from the moment we began planning. Everyone involved was very friendly and our server, Haven, was especially wonderful and did an amazing job tending to our group. The ambiance and warmth of Iron Ranger makes it a comfortable hang out place. We will certainly be back! read more

The service was not good. After waiting for 15 minutes for a called in to-go order and then being told that it was going to be a further wait I had hoped the food would make up for it. The owner explained a small kitchen fire and then burning the sandwich meat, and I was very understanding and told him things happen and hoped his day would improve... After going back in due to missing a sandwich, I get back to my office, they gave me the completely wrong sandwich and all the chips were missing for every meal. He did give us a $20 gc, however it was previously used and written all over. When I emailed that I had also gotten the wrong sandwich and no chips I never heard back. read more

Ryan the bartender was spectacular. He was very personable and funny, honestly was a pleasure to be served by him. The NACHOS are so good, 10/10 recommend. My Gf and I live right down the road from this place and enjoyed a beautiful walk down grand while it was snowing last night. We decided to try this place for a first time and we plan on becoming regulars because of our experience here. We arrived just before late night HH and was served perfectly by the bartender. We enjoyed a few drinks, card games, and the Happy Porketta sandwich (but we should've gotten the hot instead of mild). This sandwich was amazing as well as the thousand island like dressing that complimented it. We had tots with it as well which were great. The ranch could use work but didn't really even need it. We will be back to try more of their meals for sure, praying that we get the Cubano next! read more

The service at this restaurant was some of the worst I have experienced. As a server in Saint Paul myself, I am usually very understanding for people who may just be having a rough night or not in the mood - but the woman working on the evening of September 11 was unbelievable. My friend and I had heard great things about this place for a few months and decided to try it out. When we walked in, our server told us that she was trying to close down the back section of the restaurant so we apologized and said we would sit elsewhere, she then said very rudely "well I guess you can sit there" and walked away. It was extremely uncomfortable as we knew she was not happy about it, even though we offered to sit elsewhere. When she brought over menus she said "so you're only going to get drinks, right?" (We were hoping to get a meal but the rudeness of the server wasn't making us want to stay any longer than 10 minutes, so we said no). She then said "so what do you want?" (Keep in mind she had never left the table to give us a minute to look at the menu) I chose the first beer I saw on the list just so she would leave us alone. My friend and I drank our beers quickly so that we would not have to stay any longer than needed, but when we put out cards out for our bill our server was no where to be found. About 10 minutes later she appears from the back door, talking on her cell phone. She looked at the card on our table but then continued to talk on her cell phone a few tables away from us. After about 5 minutes she finally got up from her table and walked over, while still talking on her cell phone, and took our card and brought the bill. OK I'm from one of the Ranges. So I came to see how this eatery compared. I really wanted to like this place. The place has a nice ambience. As mentioned by others, service is slooooow. You would think the "homemade" nature of the food would be worth the wait. For $13 getting 2 some what skimpy sized cabbage rolls (Sarma), they could have been hot, they were lukewarm at best. The pasty was very bland. The crust on the pasty, very lackluster. The beer was excellent. The salad had far too many spines in the greens. The potica. What can I say, mediocre at best, if you don't know anything about it or have never made your own, you might find it good. Lunch for two at $46 including tip, for a so so meal. Tweek this place, hotter food, higher quality ingredients and not so skimpy with the portions. I might try again. I so wanted to like this place. read more

I really really want to like this place, I tried it for the first time a week after it opened and I had the porketta and my wife had the pasty. Both of these dishes were extremely forgettable and bland. Wanting to like it and hoping it was a fluke around a month later my wife ordered a salad to go and when we got it home and she went to eat it there were like 3 cranberries and a pound of arugula. We both wrote it off as a place we should just move on from, but today i gave it one more shot and was sadly disappointed again. They forgot to give me gravy in my to go bag which happens and isn't a big deal but the food was again so bland and dry that I felt compelled to write this review. While not actively bad this is definitely a restaurant you can skip. read more

Haven't been to Grand Ave in awhile, had a meeting and suggested here. We had the Butternut Squash Ravioli and a Porketta. AMAZING! Would go back in a heartbeat. Was full but grabbed two Potica slices for home, ate one on the way back to the office. Ended up eating the other later that afternoon it was so good. My wife and I had had Sunrise Market on our list of places to visit for quite some time now. Last week while in the area we stopped in for a quick bite, and we are really happy we did. The location was perfect for us, and upon entering, we were greeted by a very warm and welcoming staff. Our food was great and the atmosphere in the cafe was equally as enjoyable. But what really made this place special for us is when a young man (I think he was he owner) stopped by our table to ask how things were. During that time he shared with us, the business was actually family owned for many generations starting I believe in the iron range of MN. The story he shared only made the evening better. Every time we are in the area we plan to go back and support this local gem, and more importantly support family businesses here in MN. Well done Sunrise! You have a new fan! read more

We ate lunch here accidentally and loved it! The service was the best I have had in years and the food was excellent. We shared the pasty and the Italian stallion strudel. The pasty was good but the strudel stole the show. Flaky and full of delicious ingredients. The market had some great frozen take home items and they had some excellent beer and wine in the menu, too. Will be back again for sure! read more

We had a great meal here! I loved my pulled pork sandwich - which was generously loaded with pork and other tasty peppers on a French bun. Also had the pork nachos which was piled high and fill of flavor. To top it off, the iced Ginger cookies are a great dessert. Authentic Italian pizza for a great price! For only $5 I was able to enjoy two pieces of authentic Italian pizza. Similar to Punch Pizza, but in my opinion much better! The Pizza has a little more substance and flavor to it. Also, this place doubles as an Italian market & the staff has that "small town friendly feel." read more

I can't resist their baked goods! This little Shop has a unique selection of items that are really yummy. I believe they are brought in from their off site bakery and then sold out of the shop's freezer case. I'm always leery of frozen baked goods....I'm nervous that taste and texture will be off, but this is just not the case. When thawed, everything is fresh and good. I'm so in love with the cranberry macaroon cookies, so chewy and sweet, filled with cranberries, coconut and walnuts. They are wonderful. I stopped in today to indulge, sadly I found that they didn't have the macaroons today, so the nice lady that helped me recommended the patica bars. Boy oh boy these are equally delicious and heavenly. I'd never heard of potica, which I can describe is like a cross between coffee cake , croissant and baklava. So yummy and delicious with thin layers of dough with a sweet walnut filing between the layers. You just can't go wrong with these awesome baked goods. This is how a new restaurant should be done. Very comfortable atmosphere, great, warm toned decor, friendly, attentive service, and absolutely delicious food at reasonable prices. The reason why everything feels in sync here is because the food is rooted in what the owner knows and is 100% confident putting forward, and the proof is in the taste and food quality. High quality ingredients are used in every aspect here from the bread, to the vegetables used in the salad, and of course, the porketta. I ordered the Sunrise Salad and everything was exactly how a salad should be - fresh, crisp veggies, high quality protein, a little spice from the gardinera, a sprinkling of Parmesan, and a balanced homemade vinaigrette. I ordered the vinaigrette on the side, and I used just a smidge as the salad was so amazing it didn't need it. This is a place that will stay on my "go to" places as I appreciate high quality food that is uncomplicated and not pretentious, this food is straightforward, and delicious. read more

With three young boys picking a place they all like is not easy but we all loved the food and the service at Sunrise! The sandwiches were great and my youngest loved the Italian dippers. Love Sunrise Market so much! They have wifi and it's a great place to get a little work done over a pizza (thin crust, delicious sauce). The staff couldn't be nicer. Good selection of cookies and pastries; the potica was fresh and moist and not excessively sweet, loved it. We have frozen pasta from the market section and that also was very good. However...... as we finished our dinner at the bar and were still finishing our drinks (each were half full) my husband got up to go to the bathroom and the owner asked me to move down one seat, I did and.... yep, he gave away my husbands seat AFTER he had chatted with us, so he knew we were both there.
