Having experienced omakase in Japan, Hong Kong and NYC, I would rate Ishi Omakase as a true gem of premium omakase. Tucked away in Park Slope, Brooklyn, they offers an 18-course omakase for $125, including 2 appetizers, 12 nigiri, 1 handroll, miso soup, 2 desserts.   From the fresh ingredients to the thoughtful flavor pairings, the perfectly timed pacing, and the attentive service, every detail was so intentional. Our server was very knowledgeable, explaining every course and the ingredients used. The tables around us were celebrating birthdays and anniversaries--a clear sign that this is a great spot for special occasions, and rightfully so.   Their menu highlighted seasonal ingredients, starting with firefly squid as a starter. The miso black cod was one of my favorite of the night - incredibly creamy and rich in umami.   To our surprise, we were even treated to a complimentary EXTRA course--Matcha Soba with Snow Crab, Ikura and Black Truffle.   The 12-piece nigiri selection featured crowd-pleasers like toro with caviar and scallop, but the Miyazaki A5 Wagyu truly stole the show. Our chef even brought out the wagyu certification. My second favorite was the Hokkaido Uni Toro Ikura--a heavenly bite. The uni literally melted in my mouth, while the ikura burst with sweet brininess, balanced by the buttery toro.   Instead of using salmon, they opted for Artic Char with Truffle for a more delicate flavor. The Sea Eel was seasoned in the most minimalist way, allowing the clean, natural taste of the fish to shine.   We ended the meal on a high note with two delicate desserts. The Tamago Egg Omelette had a sponge cake-like fluffy and bouncy texture, while the Kanmi Sweet konjac jelly was a refreshing, subtly sweet finish that wrapped up the night.

I really enjoyed this omakase experience! We did the 18 course and it was perfectly filling. Bar seating is only for the 18 course. My only critique is that their homemade soy sauce brushed on the pieces is a bit sweeter than I liked, but that's just personal preference. Otherwise, each piece was nicely crafted and the chef and staff were lovely! I really liked their Amuse and Amberjack app + my FAVE pieces of my experience were the Scallop, A5 Wagyu, Horse Mackerel, and Otoro (added piece). The Miso Soup was served after the omakase pieces, which was different than other omakase exps, but it was still hot and comforting. The peach lychee jelly dessert was a refreshing way to end the course!

Thoroughly enjoyed the counter omakase experience in this neighborhood spot that I've been eyeing for a while. We went for a super early dinner at 4pm and almost had the whole restaurant to ourselves Loved the sushi and will definitely return!

This $125 Chef's Counter 18-course omakase experience was great! The course opens up with an Amuse which is a set of 3 small dishes of cold appetizers. The chef then serves 2 Zen Sai appetizers; a miso black cod and amber jack. The nigiri pieces contained Shima Aji, Kinmedai, Itoyori, Iwana, Botan Ebi & Uni, Hotate, Toro Caviar, Aji, Gani, Mizayaki A5 Wagyu, Hokkaido Uni Toro Ikura, and Anago. At the end, we had Toro Takuan Temaki, Aka Miso Soup, Tamago Egg Omelette, and Kanmi Sweet. The dessert was a peach jelly! Excellent service, skilled chefs, nice ambiance. What more can you ask for?

Having omakase tableside as I did here versus at the counter felt a little soulless and made stark just how much more these restaurants can charge for "dealer's choice" inherent to the omakase experience compared to a la carte sushi. I'm willing to pay top dollar for an exquisite omakase experience at the counter where the chef times each bite based on when you finished your last course and which flavors you're inclined toward, but paying this same price for the almost the whole set to come at once was a diminished experience. Still, the fish was really fresh here, with the toro caviar, crab, and hokkaido uni being some of my favorite bites. I liked the hand roll and tamago courses to round out the meal, but the plum jelly was a little lackluster to me. The interior is very minimal, as is customary for many Japanese restaurants. If it wasn't clear from this review, I'd definitely recommend the counter over sitting at the table if you go.

My fiance and I are sushi fanatics and have been craving omakase. We read the amazing reviews for Ishi and decided to stop in on Sunday night after attending the Liberty game at Barclays center. We had a 6pm reservation for the bar seated omakase experience and arrived early at 5:35pm. The hostess was accommodating and informed us that although we would not be able to start the omakase experience early, we could sit at the counter and enjoy a beverage until the experience began. I used the (very clean) restroom and then found our seats at the counter. We then ordered a carafe of Sohomare Karakuchi Junmai Sake to share which was quite delicious. It was my first time trying sake so I wasn't sure what to expect, but it tasted like a mix between traditional wine and a fruity mixed drink. The omakase experience began once every reservation was seated at the counter. One of the couples sitting at the bar was a little late and we all had to wait a few minutes for them to get started, but I didn't mind. As a general matter, the omakase has five main sections. First, a was a duo of cold marinated vegetables with charred octopus. I thought of this as a warm up/palate cleanser. Next was the appetizer section, which had warm appetizer, miso black cod, and a cold appetizer, kanpachi. The third section was the largest, with 12 pieces of various nigiri, and a handroll. The fourth section was a post-sushi miso soup and egg omelette. And fifth and finally, a dessert course. In between the sushi and soup courses, our waitress asked if we wanted to add any additional sushi (although we declined because we were so full!). They also provided fresh ground wasabi which was incorporated into the dishes, along with a heaping scoop of ginger for you to enjoy between courses. I've included pictures of each of the dishes we tried, with some highlights/call outs of my favorite dishes below. Overall, the sushi was fresh and delicious and the service was remarkable. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also nice, however, it was quite quiet in there. We, along with the other couples, were whispering so as not to disturb the other guests. Black cod - flaky and melt-in-your mouth! The portion was also perfectly sized, especially considering this was given at the beginning of the experience. Kanpachi - such beautiful presentation followed by a delicious bite. The fried onion and ponzu sauce really tie this together. Threadfin bream - I am a sucker for fresh herbs and the thai basil really made this a stand-out piece for me. Artic Char &Truffle - This piece was finished with actual truffle shavings. The fish was buttery and the truffle was just enough not to overpower. Toro Caviar- Absolutely incredible. The fatty tuna was cut by the ocean saltiness of the caviar. Dungess crab - This one was topped with truffle aioli which was so good but outshined the crab just marginally. A5 Wagu - I mean, how could this not be good? I could have eaten a plate of these alone. Hokkaido uni toro ikura- This piece was different than the others because it incorporated a lot of different textures that blended very nicely together. This was essentially a seaweed "roll" with rice at the bottom, then toro, then uni with orange caviar. The uni on this roll was different than the uni included in the previous pieces which was nice variety. Anago sea eel - I'm generally not big on eel but this was very good. It was served warm and the charred/grilled texture really elevated it. Egg omelette- More like a sweet bread than a traditional omelette but it paired very well with the miso soup. Blueberry Jelly (dessert) - super impressive flavor! It tasted like the inside of a blueberry but in gel form. After the omakase experience was concluded, our waitress brought out a caramel hazelnut ganache cake slice to celebrate our anniversary. I thought this was a very nice touch considering the only place I mentioned it was upon making my reservation, I did not say anything upon arrival. The cake was delicious and the staff was sweet to celebrate with us. Overall would definitely be back for a special occasion dinner! This local spot delivers a true high-end culinary experience.

Loved my experience here. Excellent fish you'd expect from premium omakase. Delish and great service.

I've only had one other omakase experience at another restaurant, but this one stole my heart mainly because of the service. The waiters/waitresses/hostesses were extremely attentive to your every need, going as far as asking the sushi chefs for more picked ginger on your behalf when they noticed you were running low. Letting the sushi chefs focus on the art of preparing the food, the other staff was knowledgeable on all aspects of the menu and would walk you through each dish, ensuring you had the best experience possible. We did the chef counter omakase experience for a special celebration and went into the restaurant with the mindset of "we will probably be hungry afterwards," but this definitely wasn't the case. It was the perfect amount of food, with a great mix of raw fish & cooked dishes. The quality of all the food was amazing, with the only note being that the dishes containing truffle could be overpowering to someone who isn't a fan of that flavor (good thing that wasn't me!) If that's the case for you, they will allow you to switch it out with another dish of their choosing that they think you'll enjoy! Overall, such a great experience that I'm still dreaming about. I need another special occasion to use as an excuse to eat this again!

Just had an incredible omakase experience at Ishi Omakase We indulged in their 18-course menu for $125, featuring an amuse-bouche, 12 pieces of nigiri, a temaki handroll, miso soup, and a kanmi sweet. The flavors and textures were absolutely divine, with the freshest fish sourced from select suppliers in small batches. Even the A5 wagyu comes with a certificate of authenticity, so you know it's the real deal. And the wasabi? Made fresh daily right on the premises. Truly enjoyed every bite and can't wait to go back! This is my actual favorite restaurant in the world. We come every time we are in Brooklyn. The food is delicate and carefully crafted and absolutely delicious. The ambiance is romantic and refined. The chefs are incredible and the service is unparalleled. I have been to many Omakase, but nothing is even close to the counter service at Ishi, well - I haven't been to Japan, so we'll see :)

Great spot for a date night when time is limited. When the only options at the restaurant are omakase you know you'll get a high quality dinner that will keep coming out in a timely manner. We were in and out within an hour. I found Ishi's pricing to be very reasonable as well ($85 for 15 courses or $125 for 18 courses). We got one of each and were pleased with the quality of the fish and service. Honestly I don't think I've ever encountered bad quality fish in omakase . I especially enjoyed everything that had a dolop of caviar on it. The restaurant is small and intimate. Really everything I wanted in a quick meal out away from the kids.

Wow, what an experience. The chef did an amazing job. He was so kind, as was the staff. The food was spectacular, fresher than fresh. Each dish was unique but cohesive. The setting was intimate yet comfortable. The price tag was more than appropriate, similar to a typical pricey steakhouse, but you really get so much more.

I went a 2nd time with 2 family members & it was exceptional again! Super fresh & delicious foods, excellent service by the chef & waiter+waitress. There was a change in some of the nigiri and appetizers. Delicious nonetheless! We will be back again!

Reservations become available 14 days in advance on Resy, so I'd highly recommend booking early to secure a table during normal eating hours. Sadly, since it was just the two of us, we couldn't sample as much of the menu as we wanted. Our server recommended a hot appetizer and a fancier option from their Summer Special menu: KARAAGE - 14 Each order came with five thick pieces of chicken karaage. The chicken arrived hot and juicy, seasoned well enough to be enjoyed on its own or dipped in the side of shichimi mayo. This was a great appetizer to share, and I'd recommend it if you're looking for a reliable classic. TEMAKI SET - 95 Served in roughly an 8"x8" wooden box, this set was lavishly topped toro, Hokkaido uni, ikura, and possibly Iberian ham, with crispt nori sheets on the side to make DIY handrolls. After scooping a bit of everything into a little wrap, I was greeted with the most intense, fresh sea flavors. The toro and Iberian ham were fatty and buttery, blending seamlessly with the velvety smooth uni and the fresh, bursting pops of ikura. I had to pause after every bite just to deeply savor it, and I lost count of how many times I said, "Wow, this is so good." Since I don't live in NYC, I generally avoid repeating restaurants even if I enjoyed them. However, Ozakaya is an exception to this rule -- it's easily one of the best meals I've eaten during all my recent visits. I don't know where they source their seafood, but it's incredibly fresh and packed with umami. Even days after, I'm still thinking about the velvety sweetness of that uni, and I can't wait for my next visit.

It's been open for a few years, so clearly it has a good enough formula to keep the neighborhood happy. I have been here once before, but returned last week after dining several meals at Tomoni in Jackson Heights. Apparently, the owners are friends. Nonetheless, I needed to make the comparison. After my first few bites of their Tora Don and Chirashi Don, it was clear that this restaurant has the better quality seafood. Each slice of sashimi had vibrant colors, clean taste, and the proper texture. Tomoni is not bad, but fall slightly short of this caliber. With that said, there is an even farther gap between their rice quality. Though Tora is very good, Tomoni produces nearly perfect texture and acidity for my taste buds. Other than the best omakase restaurants in NYC, Tomoni shines as one of the best versions of sushi rice in the five boroughs. Service is good and space is cute. If I have a craving for some decent Japanese food, I would drive 20 minutes here for a meal anytime.

While wandering through Bed-Stuy on a weekday evening, my husband and I decided to try out this new…read moresushi spot. It wasn't terrible--but I had a lot of mixed feelings. Food: 3/5 I'm a huge sushi fan, so I was excited when I saw a deluxe sashimi set on the menu. Unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark. The scallop was thinly sliced and lacked the rich texture I was hoping for. The salmon and other cuts were decent, but short and oddly shaped--chunky yet small, which made the whole presentation feel a bit off for something labeled deluxe. We also tried to branch out and ordered the short rib entree. For $21, it was shockingly small--definitely a single-person portion, not sharable. I added extra ikura to a salmon donburi bowl for $2, but it was barely a teaspoon's worth--just enough to say it was there. Oddly, the salmon slices in that bowl were thinner than the sashimi we had just eaten, and overall, it left me still hungry even after sharing a maki roll. Lastly, my husband ordered a green salad, which somehow took the entire meal service to arrive. When it finally came, it was just plain romaine, cucumbers, radish, and dressing. For a dinner that clocked in at over $150 (after tip), we definitely left underwhelmed. Service: 3/5 This part wasn't bad, just confusing. We were seated quickly, but the pacing of the meal was strange. Our seaweed salad and soups came out promptly, but the green salad came last, after the hot dishes and nearly after my husband finished eating. Also, a small thing--but when I'm paying $16 for four oysters, I want to know what kind they are. The menu just said "West Coast oysters," but our server couldn't tell us the variety or origin. Not a huge deal, but it added to a general lack of polish that didn't quite match the pricing. I don't think I'd return. For the price, there are better sushi options in Brooklyn with higher quality, better portions, and clearer service. Still, I appreciate new spots opening up in the neighborhood, and I'm always happy to try something new. Hopefully they refine the menu and service with time.

We started with the salmon belly carpaccio which I'd say isn't really a carpaccio because the salmon isn't sliced as thinly as you'd expect. But! I mention that just to set expectations. Nomenclature aside, it's an excellent appetizer. Served in a truffle and ponzu sauce, the salmon is lightly seared which yields two different textures to the fish. It practically melts in your mouth. Highly recommend this dish. For my entree I went with the trio don, which is 6 pieces of sashimi served over your choice of plain or sushi rice (sushi rice for me). The fish was fresh and flavorful. The portion was perfect for me. My boyfriend ordered a yellowtail roll and enjoyed that as well. We also shared a carafe of the cold house sake. I'd definitely come back and try more items on the menu. It's great for sharing and trying new dishes. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the prices were very reasonable.
