This is the original Iskhabibble's location very close to Jim's. The other has more seating but this one has a counter which had chairs available. It was quite an experience and felt like we were in a trailer. They have the history of Ishkabibble's which is based on the nickname of Merwyn Bogue, a Pennsylvania comedian. The service was fast and the cheesesteak was quite good, but Jim's, Joe's, and Oh Brother are definitely better. I would put it in fifth place between Pat's (4th) and Geno's (6th). Was very excited for this steak. Heard it as a must try, a must have, a must get. The steak is okay, but not great. Light on the cheese, meat is a bit dry, roll is great but I would like a bit more cheese and seasoning on the meat. The steak needed a bit more sprucing up for me to fully enjoy it. All the locals say to stay away from the two famous ones (G &P) as they are not good just tourist traps! Duly noted so we went here! This is our second experience as our first was at a place in Old Town. This place stuffs the hoagie full of freshly cooked piping hot delicious meat! This was much better than the other one we had tried and cost was better too! Down side is there is extremely limited seating inside. Two counters that have four barstools at each counter but you would be really squished and eating with your elbows touching if you sat four people there. We took one whole counter for just the two of us and it was a good amount of space we didn't feel squished at all. I would like to start off by saying that Ishkabibble's was a treat to find when I was expecting something else entirely. Long story short we went into Philly to hit up Jim's Steaks only to find it was closed after a fire last year... last YEAR?! How did I only just hear about this?! So, anyway, I asked a couple across the street what happened and if they could recommend another Cheese Steak place on South Street... I had people who'd never experienced the true Philly steak and I wanted them to know it (or the next best thing). So they recommended ISH. The menu was heavier than I was expecting but solid enough, and easy enough for the uninitiated to understand. I went with a simple classic Philly style (No peppers on MY Philly)... Steak, grilled onions, and whiz... yes, WHIZ. The meat was tender and delicious and it impressed the not-easily impressed. The primary complaint was it was too dry. It definitely needed more Whiz. It took some time to get the order but then this was not the assembly-line/soup-nazi style of Jim's, this was ISH and everything is made to order but not at such a high volume as Jim's. The fries were tasty, fresh, and crisp with the perfect bite to them. Crunchy outside, fluffy inside. The building was nice. The original location is really meant more for pickup and eating out rather than sitting down and eating (if you want that, about three or four blocks down the road is ISH II). I liked it. We came looking for authentic Philly cheesesteaks and we found them. Beware they have two locations very close to each other, ishkabibbles II, is the one with inside dining space and tables. The other one is just counter service, make sure you go to the one you really need. The food briefly explained: The sandwich was delicious, the cheese fries ok and I won't order the fried mushrooms again. We had the classic cheesesteak with grilled onions and American cheese. Don't be like me, and don't say yes when they ask if American cheese is ok, ask for the cheese wiz. Their American is white and not as flavorful. I didn't know so I made the mistake. Lesson learned. On a 100 degree feeling day, boy was it hot in there! Props to the workers who kept going and provided amazing service. At this no frills location, there is no AC inside and there are only about 10 bar type seats but the food was delicious and the workers made up for the heat. From ordering to getting our food, it was like 5 minutes. They even gave us a small cup of ice water and offered to refill it on our way out. So after moving to Philly I was told about the history of this spot and I got super excited to try it! Upon ordering my food, I got a chicken cheesesteak, two fries, and two Gremlin drinks... The tab came out to a little over $34, which in my book was pretty over priced considering the small amount of items. To add insult to injury, my cheesesteak wasn't even seasoned. The meat was simply grilled and they drowned it with the artificial cheese spread that added no flavor at all. Walking past South Street I was thinking about what I wanted to eat for lunch when I saw Ishkabibble's. I have not em had one of their sandwiches in more than a decade. I ordered the chicken cheesesteak with a small order of French fries. My food was ready in a timely manner so as AI walked back to my car, I began to munch on the hot fries. I enjoy my fries with salt and pepper only and no ketchup unless I a have ketchup on my sandwich so it made it "cleaner" to walk and eat. When I got to my car I wanted to try the sandwich while it was still very hot. The sandwich was just okay. They use chunks of chicken breast and since I don't recall ever trying their chicken cheesesteak before. I was pleasantly surprised. However, after the first bite I wasn't very pleased.
