Lowcountry Backyard was one of those places that feels like it's been there forever in the best…read morepossible way. Quirky, unpolished, a little tucked away, and absolutely full of character. It doesn't feel corporate or manufactured at all. More like you've stumbled into somebody's lovingly chaotic backyard dinner party where the food just happens to be genuinely top-tier. The mismatched charm, handwritten feel, and warm atmosphere are part of what makes it so special. There's this brilliant contrast between the laid-back hole-in-the-wall vibe and the seriously refined cooking coming out of the kitchen. We started with the fried green tomatoes which were incredibly tender, fried perfectly, and drizzled with a lovely house-made ranch. The sweet house pickles alongside were such a good touch. We also each had a cup of she crab soup which was beautifully seasoned and packed with tonnes of crab morsels. For mains, we shared the shrimp and grits and completely understood why the recipe has won awards, including being recognised as the 3rd best in the world. The recipe is rooted in traditional Lowcountry cooking but elevated with layers of flavour that somehow still feel comforting and homemade. The grits were unbelievably creamy, and the shrimp and sausage were perfectly cooked with fantastic flavour throughout. We also split the seafood purloo with blackened grouper, and it was equally impressive. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted incredibly fresh without trying too hard to be fancy. What really made the experience though was the staff. Everyone went above and beyond. They took time to chat with us about the area, paced the courses perfectly so nothing felt rushed, and by the end we were leaving with handshakes feeling more like guests than customers. Places like this are getting harder to find. We'll absolutely be back and would recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Lowcountry food served by genuinely wonderful people.

Stopped by for dinner since this spot came highly recommended and had great reviews. Was expecting…read moreto be blown awhile, but unfortunately, my family and I left thinking the food here was just okay. Started off with the May River Blue Crab Dinner, which came packed with crab! This was good - warm, creamy, and slightly cheesy. It came with tortilla chips and pita bread - tasted better with the tortilla chips IMO. We all decided to share the potato chip meatloaf sandwich, low country boil (for 1), and seafood parlor (with blackened fish). Overall, all these entrees were just okay. The meatloaf was too mashed for my liking and had decent flavor. It was essentially a large chunk of meat sandwich between two slices of thin pita bread. The seafood parlor was good, and came with a decent amount of shrimp, sausage, and blackened fish. The red rice was slightly overcooked, but all the protein was cooked nicely. I could have done without the sweet chili sauce. The low country boil was plenty for 1 or to share. Service was good, especially with the restaurant being constantly busy.

Phenomenal restaurant!!…read more I came with some friends and everything was great! We didn't have a reservation, but the hostess told us that the high top tables were first come first serve with full menu service, so we were able to sit at one immediately. We got the crab dip, oysters, pimento cheese dip, wings, fried pickles, and some drinks. Every was delicious!! The prices also weren't too bad for the food either! Our wait was also really nice and checked on us periodically! The wait time for ordering and food was also good. They also gave us free popcorn when we sat down, and taffy as we were leaving. The environment was great! We sat on the patio and there was live music, a view of the water, and it was busy but not chaotic. Overall we had a great time and would come back! One thing to note - a lot of the bad reviews are complaints about how the Salty Dog has a no pet rule, including no dogs. It's a restaurant, so there are a lot of DHEC rules they need to abide by, and with how busy this place is, it would be *absolute* chaos if people brought pets, even if every owner was actually keeping an eye on their pet. The restaurant advertises this rule very transparently on premises and online, and are also very transparent in the reasoning behind their decision too.

It's the kind of place you want to stay and relax. Unfortunately, the food was a big disappointment. I ordered the mac and cheese and it arrived as cold noodles with zero flavor. The cheese was just sprinkled on top and hadn't been melted at all. For the price they charge, it was completely unacceptable. The experience left such a bad taste (literally) that I won't be going back. If you're looking for a spot to grab a drink, enjoy the music, and soak up the good atmosphere, this place delivers. But I'd skip the food entirely or go somewhere else if you're hungry. Hope this helps others avoid the same mistake!.

I managed about ten, and everything was well prepared, generous, and full of flavor. The communal-table atmosphere makes the meal feel less like dining at a restaurant and more like being welcomed into a very large Savannah family dinner. The service was warm and attentive, and the whole experience felt genuine rather than staged for tourists. For anyone visiting Savannah, Mrs. Wilkes is a must. Come hungry.

The hospitality is off the charts. You need to come early at least a half hour as the line quickly grows. You sit and eat family style. The host will assign you to your table with others to fill it up. 8 to a table. There is sweet tea waiting for you and dish after dish of goodness! Then they bring out the fried chicken on platters. 21 different bowls of southern dishes- okra, rutabagas, greens, beans, corn, biscuits and corn bread.... Oh my there was a lot. You will not go hungry as the staff are near each table and bringing refills of items needed. Then when you've had your fill, they bring by peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream on top and/or banana pudding! They take cash or check only. They thankfully had an ATM inside. But the man at the cash register said we could leave and go to our own bank if we wanted and come back to pay!! That wouldn't happen at very many places. Southern hospitality, great food, memories- it is all here. Don't miss this place when you come to Savannah!!

The outside looks to be going through some renovation, but the interior looks like it's almost done. Open space, nice and fresh. You place your order at the counter (2 menus- one for dine in, one for take away) and they bring it to your table. We both ordered the chicken sandwich, one Nashville, one regular and made meals of it with tater tots and chips. We both had tea, though they had Coke products as well. The chicken was very freshly fried and delicious. Great taste. Both the tots and chips were also nice and crispy, plus piping hot. Couldn't ask for nicer or quicker service. We chatted with the owner/chef on our way out- couldn't have been nicer. Highly recommend and we'll be back to try other menu items (chicken dinners, shrimp and grits etc.). Plenty of 'southern' representation on the menu to choose from without being too greasy or over-the-top. This felt like home cooking in a trend forward atmosphere. Don't let the exterior discourage you from trying- you'll be glad you did.

Debbie and I stopped in about an hour before closing, not expecting much--just a quick bite. What we got instead was hands down one of the best seafood meals I've had in a long time. First off, we met the owner, Jim Scully--absolute legend. Friendly, genuine, and actually takes the time to sit and chat. You just don't see that anymore. Great conversation, great energy... set the tone right away. Now let's talk FOOD... * Fried oysters & shrimp - ridiculously good. Light, crispy, not greasy at all. You can tell everything is top quality. * Coleslaw - vinegar-based, shredded, and honestly reminded me of proper German kraut salad. Perfect balance with the seafood. * Soft shell crab... alright, this is where things got serious. "It was like a circus in my mouth... just an explosion of flavors." I'm not exaggerating. The texture was creamy, not oily, and the batter was just perfect. One of those bites where you just stop and look at each other like... yep, this is special. On top of that: * Everything is made with high-quality ingredients * Prices are very reasonable for what you're getting (honestly, some places charge double for worse) * BYOB (bring your own wine/beer = big win ) * Huge menu--seafood, ribs, BBQ, pulled pork, chicken, desserts... you name it Final verdict: (three thumbs up from Debbie & me) If you're in Hilton Head and even thinking about seafood--this is a hidden gem you don't want to miss. We'll 100% be back.
