If you're looking for some New England food mixed with Caribbean flavors, then this is the perfect place. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Island Take Out is an unassuming place tucked behind a gas station in Bar Harbor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]As the name implies, it's geared mostly for food to-go, but they do have some covered picnic tables.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We sat there, and they even brought the food out to us with utensils. The hospitality here was so friendly. The staff was very nice, the service was fairly quick, and the food came out fast. They have a decent sized menu, and I was surprised to see offerings like rum cake. We ended up ordering the lobster mac and cheese and the jerk chicken. I was very happy with the portion size, they definitely did not skimp on the amount of lobster they put on the mac and cheese, and the jerk chicken was also plenty of food. While it's certainly not cheap, I'd say the cost is competitive for what I'd say is a pricier town. The food was tasty (it had a lot of taste), but I will say that it did not taste like authentic Caribbean food to me. It was more like American BBQ style. That being said, I'd recommend giving this hidden gem a consideration if you're in the area.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]There are some picnic tables and chairs to sit at if you don't want to take it to go.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Their parking lot was a bit confusing but had parking for about 8 vehicles. I got the jerk mac'n'cheese. The flavor was great with a tad bit of spice. The garlic bread was yummy dipped into the sauce and it was a good size helping. Definitely a place to check out! The staff was kind and prompt

Simply perplexing to find some of the best Cajun seafood hidden behind a random gas station between two busy highways. But here we are. Drive behind the gas station, uphill, where you'll find some unmarked space for cars and a pop-up canopy with picnic tables. A door propped open with signage for today's specials beckons - Po'Boys? Here? Is this place legal? Yes, yes, and yes. The offerings at Island Take Out are actually greater than you'd think capable of coming from the small kitchen, but the employees we met seemed unfazed by our bewilderment and were quick to laugh when we asked whether the Po'Boy had oysters. "This isn't Louisiana," they said smiling, quick to recommend the Jamaican jerk style instead. When in Maine, you get lobster, so we settled on a Lobster Roll and Blackened Haddock and Shrimp Po'Boy (the special of the day), then settled in to wait and get feasted on by mosquitoes outside while we waited ourselves to feast. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The neighborhood picnic theme somehow enhances the flavor, trust me.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Time seems to dilate when waiting for that first post-hike meal, and we were ravenous by the time our food arrived. It was all worth the wait from the humble team. This is messy fare, and you'll be wise to keep the napkin box nearby. The lobster and haddock both possessed something so nourishing and soul-warming I almost forgot I was surrounded by Acadia fog. The fries are satisfying in only the way that fried tubers can be.

Food was excellent and the service was fairly quick. Jerk chicken mac&cheese was amazing and the burger was handmade and cooked perfectly on a toasted bun. Tip, when ordering the burger ask for toppings and condiments otherwise it comes plain. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As the name states this is mostly takeout. They do have 4 picnic tables available under a canopy outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The blueberry pie was superb, in fact it was so good I forgot to take a picture. This is a must restaurant when in the Bar Harbor area.

The Food 11/10 GREAT food the chicken literally falls off the bone and has great flavor, they have salads burgers chicken and more! Service 10/10 The workers are incredibly nice (Especially Janice) they have great wait time (less than15 mins) and you can get it to go or to eat in. Ambiance 10/10 [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have a forest area with handmade wood stools and logs. They have tents, picnic tables, lawn chairs, and a gas station right next for a bathroom.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Overall a great experience and one of the best foods I've ever had! If I could I would give 6/5 stars

Small business behind a gas station. Ordered lobster roll and lobster Mac and cheese. Each costs $30. Prefer the roll as it was nicely seasoned.

We arrived in the area after a long drive, hungry and too tired to cook. Island Take Out to the rescue! This is a small place tucked behind the Sunoco gas station (we actually drove past it the first time). No frills inside, you can order to eat there or take your food to go. The kitchen was bustling but the person takinf our order was polite and quick. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is no indoor seating but they do have outdoor seating in the form of 4 picnic tables under a tent--this was the such a peaceful place to relax on a warm summer evening while waiting for our food.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'd estimate the wait was about 25 minutes, so call ahead to order unless you have some time to spare. This is not really a quick grab-n-go type of place. Now, on to the food! My family ordered the fish nuggets, pulled pork sandwich, and kids chicken tenders. Everything was good and the pork was especially flavorful. I noticed on the menu they have authentic jerk wings, so I'm 100% going back for those.

Haddock sandwich, fries, wings, Lunch beer

Went here for dinner this evening and it was absolutely fantastic. First, do not let the location scare you. Yes, it is behind a Sunoco gas station at a busy intersection but that wasn't a big deal for us. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There are 6 picnic tables under a pop up and you can always get it to go.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They had a couple beers on tap including an excellent Orono/Wymer's blueberry ale. They also have Maine Beer Co Lunch in a bottle. Yum! Our party had the fish and chips, blackened haddock sandwich (x2) and chicken tenders (kid). We also ordered the jerk chicken wings. The absolute standouts were the blackened haddock and the jerk chicken wings. The haddock was super flavorful with just the right amount of spice as were the chicken wings. Just be aware that the chicken wings need to be prepared from scratch and will come out with the main meal. The fish and tenders were also good just not as great as the others. But still solid. Everything came with fries (there were other options but didn't seriously consider). The fries were great too. Perfectly cooked. We also grabbed a piece of blueberry pie to eat back at the house. That was obviously made by someone else but still tasty. Verdict from the family: Best meal we've had so far in Maine. Do yourself a favor and give it a try. If we had more time in the area, we'd definitely be going back again.

    jerk chicken

Camping in Acadia, arrived late afternoon and wanted a quick bite. I had jerk chicken sandwich. There was like one other person and I got my sandwich and fries in like 5 minutes. It was really good. Perfect fries - thin, freshly fried food.. and the sandwich was amazing. Toasted, and topped with fresh tomatoes and lettuce. and the chicken was juicy and sauce amazing. It was juicy and crunchy at the same time. [[HIGHLIGHT]]kind of hard to find in the back.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I will definitely stop here for a meal on the way out.

    Lobster Roll

We were so happy to find Island Take Out! Their lobster roll was a highlight of our trip - the roll toasted and buttered on all sides and the lobster was delicious. We got a side of Mac and cheese that was great as well. The man that took our order and prepared the food was very nice and friendly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Note that the restaurant is on the back of the gas station.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There are nice picnic tables for seating outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Look forward to going back!

If it was served with crusty bread instead of a thick slice of toasted bread, it would have been perfect. The nachos were unique and delicious with generous toppings and ahi tuna... also could have been a meal by itself... chef's kiss to those two items! Our entrees were a dish called Gnudi- which if you don't know what they are(we didn't and when we looked it up, it said it is similar to gnocchi- IT ISN'T!!!) ask before you order, if you've never had it, it's very unique and we didn't care for it at all... there was no recourse given by the restaurant... make sure you know what it is!! Our other entree was rigatoni that was topped with ricotta and short rib sauce, shredded cheese... it was tasty, but very pricey for a bowl of pasta... To make a reservation, you need to give a credit card and if you don't show up, your card is charged $25 per person. The service was friendly until we didn't like the Gnudi... then it was a little weird... It was fine, but not exceptional... Cold bottles of water are given to the table and refreshed as necessary. The restroom is not kept up, could use shine attention, a little elbow grease to clean it. They are on Facebook and offer specials on their burgers.
