My business brings me to Melbourne about twice a month for a week at a time, and I make a point of dropping in for a meal or two because it's that good! This fabulous find was recommended by my hotel (which has a shuttle to/from, so no problem having a couple glasses of wine!) the first time I came to Melbourne, and I thank them frequently for bringing it to my attention. The staff is ALWAYS welcoming and up to speed on the nightly specials--which change depending upon what comes off the boat that day. The fish was a fresh as it gets and the bacon drizzle is incredibly tasty. My wife actually decided to have onion crusted chicken and she was stunned just how good chicken can be when done this way. I travel all over the US for business and eat at terrific restaurants all of the time and this meal was as good as anything I recall. This was also our 40th wedding anniversary dinner and the staff made our night very special. This is family run with parents owning the restaurant and son in the kitchen as Executive Chef. Even his girlfriend pitches in - which is a special treat. Absolutely awful. Server was good, gave him a great tip. Restaurant empty and the hostess sat us next to another table where the table of 2 was very loud. We were also a table of 2. I heard all about dental implants, who is hosting the holidays etc. When i asked the hostess why we were seated like sardines, she said they put us there to make It easier for the server. I have to tell u another table for 2 was about 20 steps away and the waiter had to walk past the table EVERY TIME to get to the kitchen or bar. The hostess who was a mother of 4 boys since i dont have her name, offered nothing to ease the rudeness except for me to ask for a different table next time. This family owned and ran restaurant is a true local gem and consistently hits the mark every time we go! The seafood is always fresh and locally sourced making each dish spectacular! You literally can't go wrong with anything on the menu and the wine selection is amazing! I live down the street from this place, have been meaning to give it a try, and finally did this evening. Quirky decor and friendly servers greeted us and I didn't think the tables were as crowded as I was led to believe from some of the reviews. I was really excited about the prospect of a fresh fish dinner and I ordered the 3-course: a sriracha shrimp and grits appetizer, onion crusted fish entree, key lime pie dessert and my partner ordered the shrimp and conch fritters and the fettuccine with shrimp and crab; we also ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio. The appetizer course was interesting. The shrimp and conch fritters weren't bad except I had several bites that were sandy, not the end of the world but not pleasant either. The sriracha shrimp and grits consisted of 3 well-cooked shrimp on top of a bed of grits containing overcooked (possibly leftover?) pieces of broccoli. Surprisingly, the broccoli didn't interfere with the texture of flavor of the grits, perhaps because the broccoli had neither texture or flavor, regardless, the shrimp and grits worked. The entrees arrived almost as soon as the appetizer plates were cleared. My partner's shrimp and crab fettuccine had a nice portion of fettuccine and a pretty decent sauce with 4 or 5 shrimp and some crab. Unfortunately, my onion crusted fish, which was described as being "citrus bacon glazed" had a second life as it arrived swimming in a pool of sweet syrup, which tasted like Chinese takeout duck sauce mixed with bits of orange zest. So what would have been a decently cooked piece of fish was overpowered by the strong zesty sweetness of the sauce. Don't get me started on the mashed potatoes and crispy flash fried spinach which, stand alone might have been enjoyable, but were also enjoying a bath in the pool of sauce. When did sticky sweet citrus syrup belong with spinach, mashed potatoes, or baked fish? Dinner also included a bread basket of under-cooked pre-packaged dinner rolls and a bowl of olive olive oil with a clove of roasted garlic floating the bottom, underwhelming and flavorless. In the end, I was served a piece of mediocre key lime pie, which was mercifully less sweet than my entree, but not nearly as good as the Mike's Key Lime pie I can buy at Winn Dixie. Dinner for two was $100. read more

Wine list has something for everyone and priced fairly, this always seems to be a downfall at restaurants but The Island Fish Grill has got this covered too!! Not much in Melbourne. This place has tons of fresh fish. I had a special Sea Bass in white wine tomatoe sauce. GOOD not great. My company had the grouper special and said it was the best fish he ever had. Large portion of fish, small side of veggies and whatever that smashed stuff was on my plate. Sweet potatoes?? The prices here are through the roof for less than average food. Chips and cold bean dip are served instead of bread or anything and it was below average. I had a Ceasar salad that was named "the best in Melbourne" and it was below average with too much dressing... Shared a fish dish with the girlfriend that had sun-dried tomato artichokes and a medley of vegetables, it was the special of the night at $28.00 and it was less than average. For the child we ordered the child's chicken fingers which came with 3 strips and veggies and they were below average and they charged $10.00 for them. We mentioned to the waiter that we thought that was way over priced and they lowered her price to $6.00, but even at that, we were at another restaurant in the area and ordered a child's shrimp plate for $5.00 and there were enough shrimp to feed an adult. Overpriced for below average food. Seems like Melbourne's choices are limited, but I'd suggest you try some place else. Disappointing. read more

Upon entering Islands Fish Grill, from their front entrance, we were confronted by a heavy scent of urine. It was so strong, I recommended we find another place to eat. Because it was toward the end of dinner time, my husband requested that we stay. Thankfully, we were seated in their back room, because the odor was not as strong. We tried to figure out a less-offensive, scientific cause for the odor, however, we always concluded with 'urine.' Because this was our first visit, we don't know if this is common or an unfortunate situation for Islands. Despite the odor, service was friendly and helpful. Everyone, from hostess to the fella in the back parking lot, was very cordial. Food was adequate. UPDATE: The following day of my writing the review above, I received a message from the owner.
