I bought two sandwiches from Italian Express last week. The Turkey sandwich one was bland and didn't seem to have anything other than lettuce and mayo as toppings. The ham in the cold cuts sandwich tasted spoiled and we had to throw it out. I would not eat here again. read more

This restaurant is one of the best bang for your buck pasta place. I came upon this place accidently online, and I went with a friend to see how it tasted. The place looks ordinary, but the food is everything except ordinary. The prices are super cheap for a pasta place and the food quality and portion sizes are way better than even reputable places like Cheesecake Factory. I have tried several of their pasta dishes and have not been impressed with most of them, but I do like their Tortellini Alfredo with Ham, Peas, and Mushrooms. I've had it twice and it is good. It was just OKAY and definitely something not to write home about...but it must be YELP'd!!! I would normally order the name brand pizza from Pizza Hut or Dominos....but at the suggestion of my friends who live in the area - who am I to argue with a local. We needed something quick and easy to order....close by and he stated it was good. We ordered a large TO-GO pizza. It was a half and half order of Hawaiian and Meat Lovers type thin pizza. The bill was almost $20.00. The bill would of been more if we ordered it to be delivered. I will say the pizza had no WOW to it...it was simply a pizza pie with the standard fixins that did not leave a lasting impression on me. After declaring it Pasta Night, I racked my brain trying to think of somewhere to go other than my usual standby Pastagina since I've been disappointed with their consistency (e.g., nearly-crunchy undercooked pasta, runny sauces, running out of spaghetti noodles) lately. Driving around aimlessly, I remembered reading about Italian Express on Yelp (yeah!) and after a few wrong turns spotted the sign on Irvine Blvd. I ordered chicken fettucine for my hubby and a pizza to share. The pasta order included a generous serving of garlic bread. Total bill came to a little over $20. Not bad, but not exactly cheap. There are probably coupons out there, and I wished I'd had one. I arrived home to a starving husband and child and unveiled my find. My husband dug into his pasta and after finishing 1/3 of it, put his fork down and declared it "Not good". The sauce was a bit clumpy and the chicken tasted artificial and processed. I thought the pizza was quite attractive, with fresh ingredients and minimal grease. It had a homestyle taste and a dense, bready crust that reminded me of something you'd pop out of a Pillsbury tube. I happen to like that flavor, but I know plenty of others who like a more yeasty crust, or a more authentic New York style thin crust. Not sure that I'll be back unless I have a coupon or am in the area driving by and starving. While in the restaurant, I noticed signs for lunch specials which could be worth checking out if you live/work nearby. read more

My mom and I tried this place today. We ordered in to be delivered by Door Dash. It came pretty quickly but I wish they would have rang the doorbell. The Marinara sauce was usual...nothing really special. We didn't really love the garlic bread...it was just ok. I was most disappointed with the manicotti. So I own a salon down the street called Roger Joseph Hair Studio and we bought a Loyalty Rewards Card. It was only $40 and the dining value is over $400.00. I'm not sure if you can still get one but if you can and live in the area it it SO..not only do we love it but our clients go nuts for it as well. Everything that we have tried on the menu is great although we haven't really gotten past the Pizza, Salads, Garlic Cheese Rolls (AMAZING),and the Tortellini with mushrooms and peas..I could honestly eat that alone every day. I miss the lunch special. Please, IE, bring it back. Something like a salad and coke and sandwich. This little dealio used to feed me all day long, and keep me hopped up on sugar/caffiene for hours. Ok. Maybe the lunchtime business people that frequent this joint (I'm one of them) dig the TV. Why? There is so much TV in the world, can't we just take 5 minutes to enjoy the boring lunchtime businsess people? But this sucker on the wall is a superpowered eye magnet. My favorite moments with IE are the thin crust pizzas shared with a group. Or the meatball subs shared with no one but me. If you can deal with iceberg lettuce, and just embrace the American Italian ambience, this salad bar is bomb. Sit down at the old checkered tablecloth and dig in. I call ahead. Have you ever wanted a home cooked meal but were too tired to cook one yourself? Then this is the place you need to check out. We came here last night because I was craving lasagna but didn't want to take the time to make it myself, and I was not disappointed! The portion was great and I had enough for lunch the next day. Plus they give you enough garlic bread to last you two meals, or just one large dinner if you find that you can't stop eating it because it is too tasty! ;) The meat raviolis were also great, and the mozzarella sticks are flat slices of cheese instead of stick-like, meaning you get WAY more cheese than regular sticks. I have been driving past Italian Express on my way to work for the past four years and finally decided to try it for lunch one day. I ordered the Marguerite pizza and a salad. All was very good! I cannot wait to try more items on the menu. They have great lunch specials! The portion sizes were the perfect size for what you pay! Better than most places! We were looking for a new pizza place that delivers. I am sad to say that I didn't even get a change to try the pizza. DO NOT BOTHER ordering pizza for delivery from here. The guy who took our order said that it would take about 30-40 mins. Interesting... I guess they don't know how to tell time because we called an hour after we ordered to check to see what the hold up was and they said that the delivery guy was on his way. Cut to 30 mins later and still no delivery guy. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!? So, we called to cancel our order and let's just say that this place had a real opportunity to make tomato sauce out of tomatoes (pardon the pun.. I had to do it). They could have asked us why we were canceling our order.. just apologized and told us that since the pizza is already on its way... That they would give us some sort of discount to make it up to us. It's not about the money. It's about customer service. But no! His response was a real peppy "okay! The pizza is almost there so tell the delivery guy that you want to cancel the order". Had this spot bookmarked for awhile. Thought it might be good for some cheap Italian take out. I didn't work for me. When we walked in we were the only ones there. None of the 4 people behind the counter even acknowledged that they would take our order when we were ready. It was odd. Eventually with some strange I eye contact with a guy standing at a register I determined that he might be ready to take my order. So, I began ordering. Very strange. But, the place looked very clean and I thought if the food is good it's fine. Unfortunately the food just really lacked flavor and didn't taste fresh made at all. Even the garlic bread which looked good had no flavor. Spaghetti and meatballs needed more sauce but lacked flavor anyway. The meatballs definitely looked and tasted premade, from frozen I suspect. Italian Express is good if you are looking for a place to grab a quick lunch. It has a hole-in-the-wall sort of feel to it (probably because it is). The lunch specials during the week are a good deal (around $6-9). They come with your entree (sandwich/pasta/pizza), salad bar and a drink. The sandwiches and pasta are all right. Pizza is actually pretty good, though I for some reason I virtually never order it. They actually have a pretty good calzone, but that generally takes a bit longer to make. I stopped in for lunch since I was in the area for work, not knowing anything about them. They have a variety of lunch specials for 8.95 that includes various entrees, salad bar salad, and a small drink. I chose a pepperoni calzone to go and I had my salad in the shop. Everyone was super friendly, and the place was very clean. The salad bar had fresh ingredients that were cold and crisp. When I got to my calzone about 15 mins after I left it was still hot and delicious. The crust was soft and fluffy but still had a crispy outside. Inside was stuffed with big chunks of ricotta cheese, globs of mozzarella and pepperoni in every bite. It came with a perfect side of sauce that tasted excellent. One of the best impromptu lunch spots I've come across in awhile. I will for sure be going back. read more

We ordered the Italian Special tonight for delivery: two pasta dishes, salad and garlic bread for $19.99 (coupon). We also ordered a side of fried zucchini. For the two pastas, we ordered spaghetti with marinara sauce and meat balls and Mama Mia restaurant special. It was an easy process to order via phone and was told it would take 45 minutes. The food arrived in 30, hot and fresh! The salads came with romaine lettuce, sliced black olives and chopped tomatoes with a choice of Italian or Ranch. The Italian dressing was very light and super flavorful. The fried zucchini was crispy, 10-12 in an order, not greasy and perfectly battered and seasoned. With the Ranch dressing, it was perfect. Definitely will order again! The spaghetti with marinara and meatball was a safe choice. Spaghetti was not over cooked. We really liked the Mama Mia - nice tomato-creamy-garlicky sauce with penne pasta, chicken and sun dried tomatoes. It's a must try pasta dish! This is our 2nd time ordering (the first time, we received the wrong food). The owner made it right this time for us. So the regular Italian Express that I eat at towards LA has a much wider menu that this tustin location. My favorite item from my home Italian Express is the garlic cheese rolls which are also quite good at this location. Salad bar was fair, but only two dressings were offered; ranch and some kind of vinaigrette? Spaghetti was very bland for an italian restaurant and the meatballs tasted very mediocre. Yummy pasta that won't break the bank, never had a bad experience! The pizza is always amazing and delicious, and the staff is always kind and welcoming. I'm a big fan of the creamy marinara, which is a light pink sauce, and the garlic delight & meat lovers pizza. I always overeat when we order from here, but it's always a good time and I'm always fat and happy afterward. This is the ultimate comfort food to take home and eat! Also, it's still piping hot by the time we get home, which is an added bonus. First time here & it didn't disappoint. It wasn't busy at all which is always great! Me & my sister ordered a large pepperoni pizza with a soft drink. The price was great! It took about 10 minutes for our pizza to come out but that was okay because they make it fresh. It was hot & the cheese was really oozing, so that's a plus. I went here for a sub, and there are not many reviews for subs. I had the Hot Pastrami sub and it was AWESOME! My wife had the Spicy Italian sub and (although it wasn't spicy at all) it was also a great sandwich! This is definitely a great hole in the wall, and if you're in the area go and try it! I get this is a rough time but if you can't keep things straight and make your own mess ups right then they won't be getting my business again. This place is nostalgic in a sense because the food reminds me of my grade school cafeteria leftovers. The food was delivered to me so I never viewed the menu to see if flavor was a side dish. If it was, I never got any, but I sure had an extra helping of bland. I would be willing to bet there's a lot of canned goods and microwave ovens in the kitchen. I tried (but could not finish) the eggplant parmesan. It was flabbier than the chubby kid in dodgeball. The chicken sandwich (also couldn't finish) merely needs its name changed to "warm mayonnaise sub with turkey slice," then things would be less like a magic trick. Staff was nice, but the food was not good. My boyfriend ordered a tuna salad sandwich and it wasn't tuna salad-- it was tuna with a tiny bit of mayo, so it tasted like just tuna and not tuna salad. They put Shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes on it-- definitely not fresh either. I ordered a side of meatballs and the garlic cheese rolls. The cheese rolls were pretty good. If I ever had to eat here again, I would order those. On the other hand, the meatballs were tasteless and served in a very tomatoey "marinara" sauce. It tasted (and looked) like canned tomato soup :/ With a small family-owned joint like that, you expect more. Especially when it was almost $30 for 2 apps and a sandwich.
