Moist, flavorful, and easily the standout of the visit. Ambiance of the bakery itself has an older look, and presentation isn't really their focus, but the quality of the cake slices made up for it. If you're in the area and want a simple, no-frills spot with solid baked goods, it's worth a stop. Employee was nice enough, she said she was newer but gave good recommendations nonetheless. Such a great find in Rancho Peñasquitos (PQ) San Diego! It's tucked in the plaza by Armstrong Garden Center and 24 Hour Fitness. They're open 7 days a week and stay open until 4:00pm, which is awesome because a lot of bakeries close way earlier. I picked up a lemon bar, 4 slices of cake, and their special Easter bunny cake. The lemon bar was on the smaller side but seriously delicious. Service was super friendly too! Now, the cake...to die for! I got Bavarian chocolate, carrot, dark chocolate, and one more I can't remember, but honestly, every single one was so good. I was the only customer inside, but I wasn't helped for about five minutes--even though there were about three employees just standing around, with no greeting or acknowledgment. I am a native San Diegan and have been ordering cakes from It's a Piece of Cake for as long as I can remember. Their cake itself is good, which is why I gave them two stars. Unfortunately, their service has always been poor, and my most recent experience was the last straw. First, you cannot order a custom cake whenever you want. You have to call during a very limited window in the morning. It's inconvenient and honestly a bit ridiculous, but people tolerate it because the cake is good. This time my boyfriend called to order a cake for his daughter's birthday. Instead of explaining the ordering options to him, they steered him into ordering one of their in-between wedding cake tiers, which was completely unnecessary and far more expensive than a standard cake size that would have worked just fine. The next day, I called an entire day before pickup to ask if they could change the filling because he didn't realize strawberry was inside and his daughter doesn't like strawberry. Before even pulling up the order or asking for the name, the woman immediately told me it couldn't be changed. She hadn't looked at the order, didn't know who it was for, and had none of the information. When she finally pulled it up, she said they couldn't change it because the cake had already been made. However, it had not been frosted yet, and it was the frosting we were trying to change. Her solution was that they could make an entirely new cake... for another $135. For a white cake with buttercream frosting. The entire conversation was handled with attitude and zero effort to help or problem solve. After years of putting up with consistently poor service, this experience finally did it for me. Good cake or not, customer service matters, and I'm done giving this company my business. read more

Attended a birthday party for my grand niece and my sister ordered the a 1/4 sheet strawberry shortcake . I always ordered my kids cake here cause they were so beautiful and good. This cake was disappointing. It tastes very good , but where were the strawberries and chocolate shavings? Strawberries were chopped up small and mined with cream hardly any! We didn't pay for a white cake!. Strawberries are not out of season yet! Very chinzy to skimp out on them. Maybe we'll try a different cake and give it another chance or move on to some where else. Let me start off by saying we did about 5 different cake tastings before deciding to go with Piece of cake. Some places gave cupcakes while others boxed up slices of cake to try for $20. None of those places were as delicious as Piece of cake. My son n fiance chose a 2 tier Cherry Blossom style cake and then requested a square version. The store said they needed at least two weeks for the order. I suggest at least 3 in advance as it was a bit difficult to reach the one person who handles all the cake orders. I believe they opted for the raspberry and Bavarian cream with a buttercream frosting. The cake tasted wonderful! I've read a lot of reviews before coming, and I'm finding that it probably depends on what time/day you go and you may encounter bad service from one cranky employee. You shouldn't let that deter you. I had 5/5 customer service. I came on a Friday, just walked in around 12pm, didn't call ahead. Set my mind on getting Swiss Black Forest cake. In the other Yelp reviews/pics, I saw/read they ready made cakes available for purchase so that was always my ultimate plan. I bought the smallest sized 7" Swiss Black Forest for $38. I also bought candles for $2.50 which were epic bc they carried question marks which was fitting bc I didn't know for sure how old my friend was turning. Cute design, a candle fits on top of the question mark candle. Taste- SOOO DELICIOUS, I only wish I could have more of that chocolate mousse instead the two layers of light white buttercream/frosting on the inside.... Drooling. Definitely a chocolate lovers dream. The cake itself is light and fluffy and doesn't give you that overkill feeling after eating. Staff- so so kind, this lady really stuck up a conversation with me and just good vibes all around. I will definitely be coming back for all Birthday cake needs. Very disappointed with this small local bakery. I don't want to leave a review right after so my emotions wouldn't get in the way so here are the facts. First, never got a call back. I emailed directly and through the website and never heard from them. So I called and spoke to Griselda to order a cake and to make sure that all was clear and understood. I sent a second email with all of the information we spoke about and to make sure we avoided miscommunication. I sent the picture of the cake I wanted TWICE. Griselda assured me it was all clear and understood. So imagine my surprise when I come to pick up the cake only to find a Dollar Tree version of the cake. $117 for a cake 8 people. I was so disappointed and showed her the picture of the cake and told it her it didn't even look similar. It was the wrong color and the roses looked flat and unappealing. She started off saying that it looked the same and when I showed her the picture again she said the picture I sent was no good. OK then why didn't you say that when we spoke twice and you assured me you could make this cake? I also reminded her that I sent the picture twice. At that point she offered to make it again and I thought why would I want you to make it again if you didn't do a good job the FIRST time?? I also had the party that day so how can I return later for it? She took off $20 as if that would fix it. I sadly took the cake home thinking well hopefully it will be a decent tasting cake. Nope. The chocolate mousse was thick and not sweet and creamy. The black forest cake was dryish. What was supposed to be buttercream frosting was hard and thick and stuck to the roof of your mouth. I didn't want to judge the cake by the dingy unkempt bakery they have. It's not clean looking or neat and the person baking does not look professional. Lesson learned. TLDR: Tres Leches cake tasted spoiled, brushed off by owner. --DEFINITELY NOT COMING BACK. Came in to pick up my promised replacement slices of cake since the previous 2 slices of Tres Leches tasted like sour milk. (Three of us all tried it and confirmed it tasted spoiled and one of the employees agreed to replace our slices. Now, I'm no expert in Tres Leches, but my Mexican-American coworker is). The employee was not in yet but the owner offered to help. When I told him what happened, he said that his cakes sold great though and it must be because of our different tastebuds. He said he does not know what his employee promised, but he needs to protect his business. "I could give you another slice but you may say something is wrong with that one too." Saying all this in front of another customer waiting in line is a very interesting way of protecting your business. I have been going there since last 12+ years and they have wonderful service and veriety of cake's. I have been going there since my children were really small and now I go there to get cakes for parties. People work there really love what they have been doing and they always deliver the best cakes or pastries possible. I am not too much into cakes but everytime I took the cakes to party everyone appreciated the cakes. The staff is wonderful and they run as a family business. We ordered a cake for our wedding and my coordinator had already been in contact with them regarding where to deliver, time to deliver, if there was a stand, etc. I made both payments within the allotted time frame but was shocked when the day of my wedding the cake did not show up and no one would answer my coordinator's emails or phone calls. Luckily, my coordinator was amazing and ran to Whole Foods to get us a couple of cakes so we would have something to serve. I can't imagine how this would've gone if someone didn't have a coordinator. I cannot believe that this place failed to deliver my wedding cake. It is a huge bummer for us because we love their Black Forest cake which is why we chose them. Needless to say, we will never come back here again and will be telling everyone to stay away from here. It is completely unprofessional to run a bakery and not follow through on a wedding cake order. Edit: When I called the next day and asked to speak to a manager the guy who answered claimed he was the chef but he could help me with whatever I need. I told him that my cake never got delivered and he went on a tangent about how they are closed on Sundays and it is impossible for me to have ordered a cake from them and I must be calling the wrong bakery because they would never agree to deliver a cake on Sundays. I had copies of emails sent to my coordinator confirming a delivery time on our wedding date. They should not let someone who doesn't know what is going on in the bakery to claim he can help with issues and then try and gaslight the customer. They called me back and explained that the girl who took my final payment "misplaced" my order form so they never even made my cake. To any future brides/grooms looking for a cake. Do not use this place. All it takes is for someone working the cash register to misplace your order form and no one will ever check up on the order despite multiple emails confirming a delivery date/time. read more

I rarely give 1 star reviews, but this business cost me time and money, and people need to be warned. I'm a teacher and I called the store and spoke to Griselda who discussed with me options to buy custom made cookies for a class of graduating students. I asked to come in to look at options / discuss pricing and Griselda told me to come in the next morning. She said she would be at the store at 9am. I asked her very carefully to ensure that she would be there, as I would have to take time off work to come in there at 9am (they close at 4pm weekdays so I can't come after work). I took time off work and even got a substitute to cover my classes the next morning, and guess what - Griselda wasn't there! I couldn't believe it. One of the bakers told me that 'this happens a lot with her, she probably won't be in until 10am'. I was so upset as I told him I took time off work and this has now cost me money from my pack check to be here. He said 'yes I'm sorry we will talk to her'. Dude you should fire Griselda, especially if it happens often. What a terrible lazy person she is to tell me 9am knowing she will likely come in well after 10am. Literally the person in line in front of me had the same problem - needed help from Griselda and she wasn't there! Hopefully Griselda gets more than a 'we will talk to her again' and they fire her as it will continue to cost them business. On principle I refused to use this business. I used elite baking right around the corner who made me a product that was better and cheaper than what I would have got from this place.
