    French dip sandwich
    Iseo Y.

I was there Tuesday for lunch and ordered french dip sandwich with Aujus, it's been a while since the last time I was there, a little disappointed as there is no taste even the Aujus that supposedly carries the taste of the sandwich. Dissatisfied on how my server handle my bill.

The food was very good and the presentation was excellent! Our waitstaff were friendly and helpful. The ambiance was nice with a structural ceiling of large wooden beams and the seating and lighting were also warm and inviting. There are many posts on Yelp with menus and prices. I refer you to these. I didn't rate J Alexander's a 5 because the French Dip I ordered was served very rare. For the rare meat lovers out there it's perfect for you. Make reservations several days before you go. They get very busy especially on the weekends.

The atmosphere? Upscale but welcoming. It's polished without feeling pretentious. The kind of place you take a client when you want to say, "I am professional and competent," but also, "Yes, I absolutely will be ordering dessert." Lighting is forgiving. Booths are comfortable. Confidence levels rise immediately. The food is consistent and reliably good. The halibut was reported to be excellent. The steak was cooked to perfection, exactly as ordered. No surprises. Just a kitchen that knows what it's doing and does it well. I went with the Thai Crunch Salad. Fresh, flavorful, solid choice. Now... about that dressing. I had to ask for extra three times before it finally arrived. By the third request, I felt like I was presenting a formal proposal to the dressing committee. When it showed up, it felt less like a condiment and more like a hard-earned victory. Service overall was friendly, just a bit slow on the follow-through. Not bad enough to derail the experience, but noticeable. And then... dessert. The carrot cake. Let's be clear. The carrot cake was not just dessert. It was the moment. The headliner. The reason you loosen your belt and say, "We're doing this." Moist, perfectly spiced, generous layers, and that frosting? Dangerous. If the rest of the meal was a business meeting, the carrot cake was the standing ovation at the end. Bottom line: excellent food, comfortable upscale atmosphere, strong choice for entertaining clients, minor dressing drama, and a carrot cake that deserves its own fan club. Four stars. And next time, I'm ordering extra dressing and carrot cake upfront. Priorities.

If you're sick & tired of being ripped off, go somewhere else. They charge $17.79 for the most meager, pathetic excuse of caesar salad. Nothing memorable or even enjoyable. Pre-packaged salads at the airport are better than this. This chain was good once upon a time. Now it's a joke. The whole menu is overpriced, start to finish. You can get a way better salad for less at Newks.

Our favorite, easy date night spot! One of the most consistent restaurants in Birmingham. I have so many favorites on the menu, including the Thai Kai Salad and the Cypress salad. Tonight I was craving the veggie burger and loaded baked potato. Do not sleep on the veggie burger. It's awesome! Service is always on point. They are held to such high standard that could rival any sever from downtown steakhouse.

Great French dip and fries for lunch. $24 was a fair price and the place was fairly packed for lunch time weekday. I'll have to come back for dinner sometime.

    Steak au Poivre

Everyone enjoyed their meal. The lobster queso was good. My mother had the prime rib sandwich which is her favorite. My son had the baby back ribs which he said was very good. I had the steak au poivre and it was ok. The peppercorn mushroom sauce was not great. The service was great. Greeted at the door and hostess was very nice. Accommodating seating for my mom who is on a walker. The server was amazing. Definitely make a reservation. It's a nice restaurant and food is good. It is very expensive for a chain restaurant though. It is a noisy restaurant so if you have a hard time hearing you might want to try a booth that might block some sound.

Mac n cheese - 9/10 add hot sauce , acorn squash and fries
    Ronia A.

Ya'll this review is on the sides I ordered - first of all do ya'll know how rare it is to get a good mac n cheese in a restaurant?! Add hot sauce and it almost almost reminded me of Thanksgiving day family cooked mac n cheese. The acorn squash was so tasty too! And you can't ever go wrong with shoe string fries

The focaccia was outstanding - crunchy outside and fluffy inside with whipped butter - don't skip this. (5) Shrimp cocktail was good, would've loved cocktail sauce instead of the sauce they served. (I could've asked for it I'm sure, I just didn't.) (20) My prosciutto wrapped scallops atop roasted red pepper risotto was divine and as decadent as it sounds. The arugula on top added a fresh crunch and the beurre blanc sauce was light but creamy. I would absolutely get this again. (47) Julia got the salmon oscar featuring lump crab meat atop grilled salmon with asparagus and fingerling potatoes. She said it was delicious but could've used more asparagus and potatoes. (48) We both enjoyed every bite of our meal but thought the prices were on the higher side. We would absolutely return but maybe for a special occasion next time. Parking is no issue, our waitress was extremely kind and helpful. We had a reservation and it was pretty crowded for a weeknight so I don't think I'd brave it without one. We loved it here and will be back!

Because of the intense Alabama heat, we chose to sit inside, though they have a really nice screened-in patio available. The restaurant is intimate but well laid out, featuring a couple of distinct dining areas and a bar. Since it was our first time, our server, Daniella, recommended the candied bacon bombs to start. They came with a side of cheese curds, and both were absolutely delicious. Even as small as the curds were, they had a perfect cheese pull! For our mains, I ordered the cowboy burger with an added egg and a side of sweet potato fries, while my son chose the shrimp and grits. My burger was incredible, a solid 9.5 out of 10. My son rated his shrimp and grits a 7, though he has a lot of experience with that dish to compare it to. Daniella provided fantastic service, checking in at just the right times without hovering. I later realized I forgot to ask if they do anything special for birthdays, but honestly, my son was probably glad I forgot! Overall, it was a great meal, excellent service, and a very cool environment.

We decided to come on a Friday night I did make reservations beforehand and I highly suggest making them especially on the weekend and you can make them online through their website. On this evening, they had Tyler Giddens playing his keyboard and singing along. He was very good and I was able to chat with his wife and she told me that he plays around town so I definitely look forward to hearing his music again. Fowler was our server and he was very attentive. We started off with the brussels sprouts and the pork belly nachos. They were both equally delicious. Last time I was here I got the chicken tacos and I was so impressed. I got them again. My son got the Mac burger, which he completely devoured. My brother got the short ribs which he enjoyed. He also got a to go Mac burger as well. This time instead of Mississippi mud pie I got the monkey bread which was very delicious and it had apples in it as well. I love how the staff gets to wear whatever they want, and they can express their style. I did visit the restrooms and they were very clean. The only negative is sometimes the parking lot is real busy and if it is, you kinda have to park across the street. It's not a far walk but a lot of the drivers at the Summit area. They tend to drive crazy. I will definitely be back. I haven't had a bad meal here since I've been coming. Not sure why, but it wouldn't let me post any more pictures.

Only took me two years but I finally had a chance to sample!…read more As much as I hated Macaroni Grill leaving, I was excited to hear that Culinary Dropout was going to be in Birmingham. Sharing a parking lot with PF Changs at the Summit, CD has ample parking and right at the corner of 280 and 459 so finding the place would not be a problem. It's actually in a great location at the Summit where you can have a nice meal, then head over to the AMC practically next door for a movie or go shopping at the shops at the Summit. Backed by James Beard-nominated restaurateur Sam Fox, CD now has 13 locations nationwide with this one opening back in March of 2024. Thus, the restaurant looks great with high vaulted ceilings, brick patterned walls and a clean contemporary look with booths and tables scattered throughout. There's a nice large bar that serves beer, wine and cocktails. Above the bar are large screen tvs and to the side is a small carved out area with a small stage for live entertainment. They can entertain group dining and with the tvs, bar and a stage, a nice gathering can be had for all. Outdoor covered seating is also available making a cool weather brunch outside a nice option. Their menu is diverse but comprehensive and include everything sandwiches and soups to pastas and burgers. Some of the stand-outs on their menu include Detroit Pizza, Fried Chicken, Rainbow Trout, Roasted Salmon, Beer Battered Fish & Chips, Korean Style Ribeye, Meatloaf and 36 Hour Slow Roasted Pork Ribs marinated in jalapeno BBQ sauce. One of my favorites was the Soft Pretzels & Provolone Fondue starter that I had heard so much about. The bowl of round pretzel balls coated with just the right amount of salt arrived soon after our drinks. A small little cast iron bowl filled with provolone cheese rested on a base with a tea light underneath to keep the cheese warm. Tearing open a pretzel ball, dipping in the cheese... Yom Yom Yom Yom! Our table ordered Fish & Chips, Prime Rib Dip sandwich and Fried Chicken. I tried some of Jeff's beer battered fish. Fried to a beautiful golden brown, the crispy batter hid a tender, flaky cod (I believe) that was delicious. Tammy got the prime rib dip sandwich. It arrived with a small cup of au jus, fries and a slice of pickle. Tammy enjoyed her sandwich but wished there was a little more fontina cheese and horseradish creme fraiche. I sampled the fried chicken plate. Be ready to get messy with your hands because it normally consists of a leg, thigh and half of a breast. The nicely fried seasoned breaded exterior had just the right crunch revealing steaming juicy chicken underneath. Yom Yom Yom Yom. My buttermilk biscuit had a nice golden coat with a soft fluffy center. The coleslaw was also delicious. But my mash potatoes with gravy was dry. If we had received our meal 10 mins earlier, it would've been perfect. I suspect that our four top was left under the warming lamp a little too long before it was served. Prices have a wide range from 12 to 42. CD's ability to make a reservation online is a big plus. We were able to make a reservation the day of on a busy holiday weekend. It also happened to be storming during our visit and the lights even flickered for a second resetting their Direct TV and FIFA Soccer feeds, but we were fortunate that the restaurant and kitchen didn't have to close due to a power failure. It can get loud especially if they have live entertainment. The high ceiling helps with the high decibels, but CD may not be your spot for a quiet romantic dinner unless you're in one of their private rooms. Our server Eva was very attentive and never let our drinks get too low. Even the floor manager Taylor stopped by our table to welcome us. CD is a great place for a good time. They host live music, local bands, games, private dining and group celebrations. I look forward to returning and trying the Salmon next time. Welcome to Birmingham, Culinary Dropout!
