My friend selected this place for her birthday dinner and she usually has impeccable taste. This was my first visit to location. I had no idea what to expect on my visit but I must admit I was most satisfied. Parking was plentiful but there was some distance to walk to the front. Inside it was bustling! I was able to squeeze into the bar area which had plenty of tvs and lots of drinks choices! (Whoo hoo!) although it seemed really busy it was not long before we were seated. The service was great! And even though my steak was alittle over cooked the waiter and manager took care of it all. I look forward to my next visit! read more

Have frequented this restaurant in the past few months and had my Mom and Dad with us today. Had a 20 minute wait and understand it was after church service mid afternoon. Ashley was our server we gave our drink orders and food orders. She did not get 2 sweet teas, 1 coke and 1 water correctly. Really seamed overwhelmed. Two of our entrees were delivered by a runner, there was no communication that the remaining meals were on there way. The steak tacos were dry and lacked flavor. The server could not be found so my wife had to go up to the server station to get someones attention. Ashley appears only after the manager had responded and brought out a side of jalepeno ranch. We do appreciate good service and really did not receive the service level we expected today. We will not be taking another company there for a long time. BTW the manager replied she would bring us some Carrot cake for the lack of service and the obvious fumble and we never received it, no follow through. The food and service have always been consistently good. However, reservations are a different story. If you have a party larger than 4, reservations are near impossible. In the past 2 months I've tried to reserve a lunch table for a business lunch for 6, a dinner table for my family of 5 and another dinner table for a GNO for 8, all reservations tried to be placed weeks in advance. I cannot get a clear explanation on why they can only reserve seating for 8 on a Tuesday evening between 4PM-5PM, not the 6:30PM we would like, but the hostess asked us to be walk-ins at 6:30. If I can't reserving seating, how am I supposed to feel confident as a walk-in that I will get a table? read more

This is a special occasions restaurant for my family. I don't know why.. but when something special happens and we need to celebrate immediately J. Alex seems to be our go' to. They have really good food and bread. The lighting is dim, the staff is friendly it's pricy but not ridiculous and the drinks are good. It's nice. read more

Followed covid protocol well, seated me and took my order in a timely fashion, and the food just melted in your mouth while meeting my calorie limit for the day. Always been my families special spot to go and enjoy family time and some good food. The one thing I love about this restaurant is that it is simple food but they elevate it with the quality of the food as well as the staff. I have never had a bad experience. The staff is welcoming and attentive to details. With covid my family and I have been worried about going out and especially eating in. For a steakhouse with actual high quality steaks, you probably won't find a more reasonably priced place with a good atmosphere. It's not the best steakhouse in the area but for a less expensive date night out than Fleming's, this is a pretty quality spot. My only knock on this place is that they'll dim the lights at night for ambience but sometimes it makes it way too dark. I've got pretty good eye sight but even I've had hard times seeing in there sometimes. That being said, I would still go back and still recommend it to anyone in the Galleria area. Probably not a place you would make a long drive out of your way to go to but overall a good spot with quality food. read more

After a mishap with reservations at another restaurant in the area we landed here at the last minute. We called ahead and explained our situation and advised we had a large party, we were advised they wouldn't book over the ph but we came they would accommodate us. We were only 5 minutes away so we headed there and were very well accommodated on a busy Friday nite. Food and drinks were "off the chain"--DELICIOUS The drinks are "Real" drinks I ordered a 21 Manhattan martini that just a little on my tongue was a whooooaaaaa. Passed that to my husband & opted for a mojito that was so good. Our table enjoyed a variety of drinks and food including lemon drop margerita, knickerbocker, filet mignon (one order had to be sent back it came out tough and over cooked but perfect the 2nd time), New York strip, pork tenderloin ( sauce is spicey)salmon, rattlesnake pasta, prime rib, loaded potatoes, broccoli (good but very salty). This was a great evening, we actually shut the restaurant down. Will be back and will suggest to others. **Bathrooms were clean . Waiter was excellent! read more

I haven't been to J Alexander's in over 3 years and not since it is called Redlands. My wife and two young children went with me. It was overpriced and the food was average. I spent $116 before tip and it really felt like a $60 meal tops. The server was not trained well and border line rude. Some of the other staff was much more polite. I think there is a mixed bag of personnel here. The appetizer was the spinach con queso which was decent. The chips were thin and crispy but some were over salty. The dip was good. It came with a side of pico de gallo. The ahi tuna was good. The accompanying broccoli was bland. This was the best meal we chose. The steak and fries was ok. The steak had a nice grill char flavor but was not better than what I can cook on a green egg with Hickory chips. The fries were good. The steak tacos were too spicy. The suave ruined the meal. Three tacos are really too much. I would rather have had two and a side dish. I got too monotonous. The fish tacos were exactly like the steak ones except with fish. The sauce overpowered the otherwise great battered fish. The sweet tea was nothing special. I like my tea at home better. The water was served without ice and wasn't very good tasting tap water. The crime brûlée we ordered for dessert looked great. We thought we would finish on an upbeat note but it was only cosmetic as the creme was over cooked and had the consistency of cheesecake rather than a pudding. It was crowded there on this Saturday night. Maybe we just got a bad experience. I don't know. Others seemed to like their meals. I just felt it was really a let down. We tried it but will not return. For this level of expense I will stick with Seasons 52 at The Summit which is my favorite restaurant in the whole city. I wish I could say it was better. read more

We stopped here for lunch on the way to Gatlinburg, because it was highly talked about amongst our friends. The food is good, and the ambiance is chill. We had the smoked salmon dip ( good but needed a little more flavor ), rotisserie chicken with Orzo and Wild rice ( perfectly seasoned chicken, and the O&WR is unique but so good ), some kind of steak sandwich ( tender, and juicy ) and the creme brûlée ( big portion! Been years since I had their Prime Rib and I can only explain my absences due to all the great independent restaurants in Birmingham I wanted to support. The hot sweet glazed croissant on my chilled salad plate still had me wanting another one. The service is outstanding. But the loaded fluffy potato was so amazing we had to discuss it. No need to mix the toppings because one could ease the fork thru the top to the bottom and come up with bacon, cheese and melting butter/sour cream. The steak was tender, rare as ordered and delicious. The half of my dinner I had for midnight snack was wonderful too including the salad with dressing wilting the fresh greens hours later. I hope the prom dates enjoyed their meals as much as I did. There's a reason this business has remained opened when others folded around the mall. I will definitely be back soon because that Prime Rib is one of the best in the city. read more

It comes with "smashed" potatoes but I also add the Not Your Ordinary Mac & Cheese because no meal is complete without it! Very disappointed in our lunch yesterday. We ordered calamari as a starter, which was good, hot and timely but I cannot say the same about our food. It took 30 minutes to get our entrees and they were luke warm with cold fries :( we were given an order of hot fries because I told the waitress by the time we got them we'd be done eating so to only bring one. It took forever to get our check and close out and I thought maybe she was taking something off for the inconveniences but she did not. Driving from our home to Mobile was a rather long day and we wanted to stop for a bite of lunch when filling the gas tank. We found the Costco, filled up and then searched for a nearby spot for a quiet lunch before hitting the road. We'd expected something 'okay' and ended up with something fantastic by choosing J. Alexander's! We were seated right away and given a booth as requested. The hostess let us know what the soups of the day were and said our server would be right over. I am not a person who enjoys spicy foods that tend towards 'hot' and asked about the chili. She offered me a sample and a moment later it was on the table, enough for my husband and I both to try it. Fantastic for those that like warm, not fire-breathing, and of course we opted not to get the jalapeño on top of our shared bowl. There were so many wonderful items on the menu, we wanted to try them all and in the end, chose the three taco plate. WOW! Absolutely perfect! My husband is a bit of a food purist and doesn't like a lot of 'nonsense' in his food, I enjoy trying new things. They happily left the garlic sour cream sauce out of the tacos and provided it in a dressing cup on the side. We each had one taco and some of the chili and were happily filled up and ready to hit the road. Had we each ordered an entree, we would have been able to skip dinner out that night, the food was not only delicious and beautifully presented, but lots and lots of it, too! Our server was so wonderful, very attentive without hovering. The knowledge of the menu was apparent and delightfully, she didn't have a quick answer for anything. Hearing 'I don't know but I will ask' is refreshing to be sure! We will be visiting Birmingham again in the future and know for a fact, this will be a spot for us to eat dinner and lunch while there! read more

We went for my brother and laws PhD graduation from UAB. Packed Friday night, group of 15. They got our tables ready but were only able to accommodate 2/3 of the party at the first table. They were clear in their explanations and kept us in the loop as we waited for the second table . What impressed us the most was management, seeing the size of the party and that we had toddlers with us brought over an order of French fries for the kids while we waited. They went above and beyond to assist us and accommodate us and I have never been to a restaurant that did that while we were waiting. Food was great and service once seated was prompt. Veggie burger is hand patted and constructed like the great one at Cheesecake Factory. Lemonade is actually squeezed in the kitchen. 92 health rating as of our visit. We will return. read more

This place is perfect for a romantic date night! The food is beautiful and delicious. We were there Saturday night, but only for desert this time. Holy cow, the chocolate cake with ice cream is to die for! Its a HUGE piece of the most rich and moist chocolate cake ever, it goes perfectly with the vanilla ice cream. My friend ordered the carrot cake and it was quite possibly one of the best carrot cakes I've ever had. It's not overwhelmingly sweet and just delicious, I highly recommend both! read more

But I waited at least 10 minutes for someone to even come to the table and greet me/ask for my drink order, so I went to find the hostess to ask for a waitress. They were extremely apologetic, and eventually brought my food out quickly, but the whole situation was stressful and just not worth it for an average salad. read more

I've always like J. Alexander's but I don't get here often. I met two good friends here last night and it was truly an enjoyable experience. I know many people dislike "chain" restaurants but this one, like Fleming's, has always been top notch. I love the atmosphere...it lends itself to intimate conversations but still a great place for large groups. We had the spinach queso for an appetizer and it came with a side of pico. The chips were crispy just like I like them and they were not greasy. I can appreciate having the glass bottles of water at our table so we don't always have to bother our servers for quick refills of water. I do miss having ice in my water, but I would imagine if you want ice just ask and they'll bring some. I had the Thai Kai Chicken salad that came with peanut sauce and a citrus vinegarette. I asked for both on the side just in case they like to drown the poor lettuce leaves. The salad was hefty and the chicken was sliced thin and was perfectly seasoned. Lots of crunchy veggies. Good choice! My friends both had steak and baked potatoes. The potatoes were huge! Both steaks looked delicious! Every plate we saw coming out of the kitchen looked really good. I will try to remember to come here more often. The only thing I miss is the croissants drizzled with honey. Years ago they featured these warm pieces of heaven but now they have warm, sliced sourdough bread instead. We had to ask for it though. The wine list is a tad more expensive but they had one or two $8 a glass options. I didn't try any cocktails but from what I remember the bartenders were always great! read more

My family and I have been dining at J. Alexander's for many years. This is one of our favorite restaurants. We dined here again on yesterday to continue a beautiful family outing. One of the staff members who wasn't even assigned to our table went above and beyond for us. I could tell they may have been short staffed yesterday. It didn't stop them from providing excellent service to us. That means so much to us. I have been to restaurants who were fully staffed and the service was horrible. The food is always fresh and delicious. J. Alexander's has the absolute best spinach con queso. I love the ambience. Most importantly, I love how my loved ones and I are treated. That ranks the highest for me. They will always have my business for these very reasons. read more

We visited Redlands to celebrate my husband's new job. Although the wait-list was long, we were seated within 5 minutes of our arrival because of our reservations. We had the deviled eggs as an appetizer, and they were pretty good. I don't think they were worth paying $9 for again, but they were good enough. I ordered the New York strip with mac and cheese, and my husband ordered the steak and French fries. My steak was huge, but my husband's was smaller than I expected. The menu is not specific about the size of the steak options. My mac and cheese tasted a little floury, but over all it was quite good. The steaks were cooked a little under what we ordered, but I always order medium because I'm okay if it's a little over or under from there. Overall, we were both very happy with our steaks. They are some of the best in that area of town. We will definitely return again. read more

My family has long since used this establishment as a venue to come celebrate noteworthy personal victories and birthdays at. I have dined here both as J. Alexander's and as Red Lands Grill, and regardless of the name change, it has never ceased to impress. The atmosphere is that of a dimly lit lounge featuring low hanging lights, nice leather and polished wood seating, and an open kitchen. The staff are all very friendly, from the moment the hostess greets you to the minutes of after-dinner talk once the meal is completed and the check is paid. I cannot speak for the menu as a whole, as I have consistently ordered the same thing since I began coming here, but the bernaise filet mignon with baked potato and Caesar salad is a meal that has my mouth watering just thinking about it. The salad is so fresh, with crisp leaves, warm croutons, delicious dressing, and however much fresh parmesean you want, as the server grates it for your salad in front of you. The steak is phenomenal. I always order mine Medium rare and it has always come out to perfection. They also use a wood grill for grilling and the flavor really comes across in the meat; the side of bernaise sauce is made in house and sets off an entirely new realm of flavor when dipping your steak into it. The baked potato is a standard loaded baker, but certainly accommodates the steak nicely. The service was fantastic. The server was very knowledgeable about the menu and informative as to what we could expect from each item. The house sommalier even came to our table to guide us through the wine menu and allow small tastings of those which stood out. Keeping a promise to a old college room mate, I took on the strenuous challenge of driving from my beloved safe haven and culturally rich DC metropolitan area to attend my friends wedding in Georgiana Alabama. Yup, there is a 'Georgiana' Alabama And . . . As I customarily do, being the foodie that I am, I visited my trusted Yelp app for notable restaurants near my ultimate destination. To my great dismay and disappointment Waffle House, Krystal and Wendy's were in the top 10. Not looking good, definitely anti foodie territory. Fortunately, In an attempt to acquire wedding gifts at a Costco along my route, on a whim, I cranked up the app again and was intrigued by this 1# rated option. The wife and I decided to check it out. Firstly, the place was obviously popular due to the presence of 20 or so people in the immediate lobby waiting for seating. We were told the wait time was 45 minutes. Seating however was ultimately handled very efficiently via text message within 30 minutes. The restaurant space itself is an open kitchen layout with modern yet elegant appointments featuring booth seating, seductive mood lighting and contemporary art lit with art gallery styled spot lighting. Our sever, Ted was attentive and more importantly very knowledgeable about the menu items as to specific ingredients and preparations. The wife ordered the rotisserie chicken with 'smashed' potatoes which she found to be quite good. Urged by Ted's passionate descriptive of my inquiry, I had the in-house veggie burger which was quite simply the absolute best I've had in 25 years. Even surpassing my previous favorite veggie burger at the Bourbon Steak lounge at the Four Seasons in DC. Jackpot! 4.5 Stars in a veritable foodie wasteland! read more
