We placed a "to go" order on Redlands in route from GA to MS. We made it a point to order directly bc it said online they really appreciated that bc they didn't have to pay fees and as a result could provide a better service by going through them directly. We also tried to order via phone, but they said they couldn't do it that way. When they brought out food they didnt bring "to go" silverware. I walked in to get some and was told they were out. They instructed us where to go buy it. They said they never normally carried it and Adrian said they expected you to get from hotel you were staying out or get somewhere else. NOT A GOOD PLACE TO STOP IF YOU ARE TRAVELING THROUGH! J. Alexander's was really busy on a Saturday and we expected a little bit of a wait. We got a table in about 30 mins and we greeted immediately by our server. We ordered the grilled artichokes as an appetizers and they we great. The dish has 2 artichokes cut in half so it's perfect for 2 people. I ordered the baby back ribs for an entree with fries and coleslaw. I could pull the bones right out and place them to the side. The sauce was a tangy-sweet flavor that complimented the pork well. The shoe string fries and coleslaw were good match to the ribs. no complaints there. The menu pricing is a little steep considering the items that are offered. Nothing real special on the menu. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Birmingham! the service is always excellent and the food never disappoints! I always get the pork tenderloin and my mom normally gets the steak Maui or the steak with bernaise sauce. the macaroni and cheese is to die for! their smashed potatoes and baked potatoes are stellar as well! their spinach con queso dip is a wonderful appetizer. their rattlesnake pasta is delicious as well. if you have room for dessert the carrot cake, creme brûlée and the chocolate bundt cake are all amazing. overall the service is great and the food is wonderful. it's well worth the money! read more

The booths are appropriate for private conversation--I couldn't hear my neighbors talking about their private lives. I arrived about 5:30PM on a Wednesday evening. I was seated immediately and the waiter was attentive. The waiter checked up on us regularly and gave frank suggestions when asked. I simply had a veggie burger. It was nearly the cheapest thing on the menu at about $12. Some of the dishes got up into the $20-40 range, which seems rather high. Made in house, the burger was convincing and of good quality. My friend had a real burger and said it is one of the best burgers in town. He too felt that the other main dishes were overpriced. In any case, mine was big enough for me to bring home lunch for the next day. After dinner, we had carrot cake. It was moist and tasty. It is expensive, but the portion is gigantic--enough for two people to be satiated. We declined drinks, but my friend says that the mixed drinks aren't as good as one would expect. Of course, wine and beer should be fine. In summary, the restaurant has a good atmosphere, good food, good service, and higher prices. I recommend this restaurant. read more

I've eaten at J Alexander's a couple of times recently for lunch. The resultant is elegant and classy and definitely a favorite of many judging by how full it becomes and how long the wait can be. Be sure to make a reservation to be safe. The device is pretty good, the type that make sure your water isn't empty during your stay. Unfortunately one time I got a glass which was dirty which I had to send back, left me feeling a little ill. Went here for lunch during the week. Our server was great and the food was tasty. I don't typically order taco's at a steakhouse but I was just looking for a light lunch. It came with 2 steak tacos, served with rice and beans which turned out to be really good. The tacos had a ton of lettuce which I had to scrape off. Once i got down to the steak, there wasn't as much as I had hoped for, but what I did get was delicious. The pico de gallo on top was super tasty as well. My overall visit to this restaurant was decent. The restaurant was packed on a Thursday night. I had the rotisserie chicken with the garlic mash. I didn't really enjoy the chicken as much. It didn't have any flavor and they served it with a side of stock that had no flavor as well. However the garlic mash was delish. Before we left I asked to see a manager, just to share my experience. Rather than the manager apologize for the bad experience had he acted as if nothing was wrong. My daughter brought me here for Mother's Day and I have to say that it was not what I expected at all. We were running behind so, we called in to let the host know that we would be arriving a few minutes late and she said fine. When we arrived, we ended up having to wait a bit because they did not have a table for us. The hosts were not friendly at all and the vibe was unpleasant. Once we were finally seated, the host kind of just tossed the menus and walked off. I wanted to take a minute to review the menu but the server made me feel rushed. Our server was very nice and attentive, but I did not like the feeling of being rushed to order. Ultimately my order consisted of the carrot cake, which I wanted first. Dessert has to always come before my meal... Anyway, I had the steak maui w/smashed potatoes. When the meal arrived, my steak was cooked perfectly on the inside but the outside was pretty charred. Truth be told, I tend to favor locally owned and unique restaurants verses large chains, but I was pleasantly surprised with my experience. The lighting is very dim with lanterns throughout; I love low light so I thought this aspect of the restaurant was great. Our waitress and her assistants were very attentive and I thought their service was five-star. The food is really good, no complaints whatsoever. Now, I wouldn't say it is anything to write home about; however, I have no negative feedback and will certainly be back soon.
