I went for lunch with a coworker. While the food was good and the service was great, I was not a fan of the atmosphere. The restaurant is sectioned off with a small area that is open, near the bar, and then there are booths filling up a majority of the restaurant that have really tall seat backs. It felt like we were enclosed in a little pod. Almost "Outback Restaurant" feeling. I guess that can be good for a date night? Not for lunch though.... Also, it takes away from the people watching. Not to mention, don't they realize that people will watch the food that arrives to their neighbors and that, sometimes, THIS is what "sells" the food. We couldn't see a thing! Anyway, on to the food. I felt that the food was decently good and reasonably priced. They do offer daily specials as well. I went for the beef medallion Caesar salad special and was pleasantly content. The meat was prepared the way I asked, medium rare, and had great flavor. The salad was crisp and delicious and paired well with the dressing. My coworker ordered the steak & frites and was also satisfied. I didn't try the steak but the fries had a great flavor! For an appetizer, we tried the deviled eggs. These were unique and flavorful (although not the best I have had). Overall, it was good. The food was great and the service was excellent. If I do go back, it would be for a date though...the atmosphere doesn't really lend itself to any other type of diners. read more

Made last minute reservations on a Thursday night. Place was busy when we arrived but we were seated immediately. Parking can be a bit of a hassle since it's shared with other businesses, and did not see a valet that night. I ordered the Salmon and loved it! It was perfectly crispy on the outside but not dry at all on the inside. The mashed potatoes were delicious and came with some broccoli as well. One of the better Salmons I've had in Houston area. I ordered the Red Headed Martini...fair warning it's on the stronger side. If you don't like Tequila, this is not for you. I liked it, a little sweetness to subdue the Tequila a bit. The service was pretty good. It's a nice place. Crowd that night was on the older side. Not a huge place so definitely recommend making reservations. Definitely going again. read more

We had heard rumors last year that J. Alexander's was coming back to Houston in a new location. So we searched on Google for the name J. Alexander's and was led to this restaurant. The Google directions never said the new name of the restaurant or that it was a sister restaurant. So it took us a minute to find it because we were looking for the name J. Alexander's.We decided to go in and ask more about this restaurant . The hostess informed us that it was the sister restaurant to J. Alexander's. We decided to give it a try because the hostess stated it carried many of the same items. I loved the contemporary ambiance and not too dark or too bright lighting. The team approach to service is definitely appreciated and in sync with J. Alexander's. The food was pretty good. They didn't carry the Steak Maui or Key Lime pie which is what I was hoping for. However, they have about 75% of what J. Alexander's had on their menu. My date loved the juicy Veggie Burger. We both loved the Spinach Queso Dip and the Redfish with Czarina Sauce - served over rice with a classic New Orleans cream-based sauce with shrimp and julienned vegetables was delicious after I had the chef give me some more Cajun spices. The aromatic French pressed coffee was so smooth and satisfying. We will try them again and hopefully they will add the Steak Maui and Key Lime pie to the menu. I have to be honest, I don't even remember what our entrees were, but the apps were the highlight of the night. In fact, we went back two nights in a row just to get these appetizers: Avocado bomb: Was skeptical about other reviews, but once I had the first bite, I was sold. Yes, we got this again the second night. Smoked salmon dip: This was on the "specials" menu, and if you like smoked salmon and dill, this is for you. The second night, it wasn't on the "specials" menu anymore, so I was a little sad. But we asked about it anyways, and the chef was kind enough to make a batch for us. Score! Tried to do this review on Instagram message without going to public review but never heard anything from Merus so posting this review now. We had dinner Wednesday night at your place and we were quite disappointed with our experience and wanted the GM to know as we did not see a manager when we left at 9:15 that night. We have been coming here as our favorite place since you opened and have always been very pleased with everything. Last night we ordered our usual meal from Carly and all was good until she came back after some time to let us know there was no more prime rib. We talked about leaving as my wife was looking so forward to that meal for weeks. We asked for the French dip sandwich instead. I even said maybe you all would give us something for staying. The rest of the dinner the tea and water were filled slowly being empty for awhile each time and my reorder of my martini didn't come until we ordered a second one for my wife. I believe the orders had to have been put in together although ordered 10 minutes apart. The location makes it such that people just haven't figured it out yet. When they do - you'll get the same wait times you get at a Hillstone. For now, it's an anomaly - great food with a clean and current aesthetic- and available tables at prime time. It's a J. Alexander restaurant - expect high standards and consistent food and service. Some of the servers are new - as was ours - but she was excellent and very attentive. The ribs, fries, roasted chicken, fried shrimp, salads and desserts were delicious and came out quickly. Management checked on us - it's the little things. Overall, this location (with easy parking) is a blessing for the area. Total winner. This review is based on three visits between May-July 2021. The restaurant seems to execute best during the week on "slow" evenings. Tuesday & Wednesday "wine nights" are a great way to grab a good bottle of wine for $20. No HH discounts on food though. The warm popcorn served as the bar snack is a nice touch! I really want to love the menu (it's very similar to Hillstone/Houston's but lower quality food IMO) but have found things to be hit or miss. Things worth trying: Thai Kai Salad, Hot Chicken Sandwich, Pan Roasted Salmon. Not worth the calories: Spinach Dip. Much of their staff seems new to the hospitality industry. They lack a mastery of the menu and attention to detail. Bottom line: manage your expectations. read more

This is my favorite place in Houston to grab a Filet! Why do you ask, when there are so many great places to grab a steak in this city? Well... for $41 you get a 10 ounce Filet Mignon that is cooked to that perfect Medium Rare where the interior is buttery while the outside has that marvelous crusted sear. This place is amazing. They hands down have the best French dip I've ever had. I could literally drink the horseradish sauce. It's that good. The shaved prime rib was so tender and cooked to perfection. The fries are shoe string which are my favorite. These did not get soggy but stayed crisp after a while. I also got a house salad and it was fresh, crisp and delicious. We ordered a key lime pie and carrot cake and my boyfriend said it was the best key lime pie he's ever had and he is super picky. The carrot by far is my favorite I've ever had. Food came out quickly. Will the general manager was such a delight as well. Very personable. My wife and I went last night for dinner. We arrived around 7:45 and sat at the bar. Initially the service was good as we were greeted and asked our drink order. But the rest of the evening the service was terrible. There were three bartenders but they all worked the service bar frequently or left the bar area. They just never came around asking the customers (us or those near us) if they needed anything. Finally, they took our dinner order after a long frustrating wait. The food arrived promptly and it was good. But then we couldn't get their attention to pay the bill. I went to ask the hostess for a manager (which took another 5 minutes). I told him about our frustrations, he offered dessert (which I declined), my wife paid the bill and we left. I ordered the hot chicken for my entree. It was just ok. It could have been dipped in sauce to make it more moist. Didn't care for the cole slaw on top. Fries were delicious though.
