It's been a long long time since I've had the occasion to frequent J's, but as was usual the service was on point and the food on par too. I met a friend for a late lunch and ordered the Croque Madame. After the Iridescence Chef's Dinner I needed to tame my hunger for a full size version of one of my much favored sandwiches. Open faced on sourdough with a smear of either bechamel or mayo, with a nice portion of ultra quality smoked ham, draped with a thick slice of Gruyere and topped with an almost perfectly fried egg...it doesn't get too much more decadent for afternoon delight...well, except for afternoon delight with a side of pork belly. It came with a pile....actually more of a heap of shoestring fries and some loose greens so no need for the side salad. My friend ordered a bright tossed salad for starters and the rotisserie chicken, most of which she took home. The portion was freakin' enormous and the presentation was beautiful! When I want to be doted on and don't feel like dropping two bills, this is a pretty good spot to stop. It's always a pleasant experience to share with a good friend and the prices are on point with the service and the quality of food. J's always seem to be a winner. read more

My mom loves this place so on a recent visit home- I wanted to treat her to what she calls "a nice dinner out". J Alexanders, goes on my list of places to grab a decent lunch since there is one around the corner from where i work, but dinner? There are so many other choices, in my opinion. But I wanted to make her happy so off we went. I can probably recite the menu given the amount of times I've been here. Salmon is usually what I get but tonight- my mom was pushing the steak so I ordered the NY strip and she got the filet. Our steaks came up quickly and with the largest baked potato I have seen in a long time! Mom's was perfectly done, but mine? A little over done for a medium rare but close. Our server, Lacey alerted the manager that our steaks might be a little overcooked before we even had to say anything. So first up- the floor manager came over and asked if everything was okay and then Geoffrey, the kitchen manager came out to apologize and asked if I wanted my steak re cooked. I didn't but they ended up comping us dessert for our trouble. Nice- as I love their warm carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and it made all my troubles with my steak go away! Dinner for two with a couple of drinks ran about $90. I, for one, prefer local restaurants over chains, but J Alexanders is a chain that consistently delivers with good food and excellent service. read more

I've always been a fan of J. Alexander's until I tried to order online for pickup. They apparently use a 3rd part partner for online ordering called Chow Now...I did not want an account with Chow Now but the app doesn't offer the functionality for you to checkout as a guest...so I followed their process to try and sign up for an account and it kept telling me that I had an invalid email or password (the email is my personal email and the password followed their guidelines to a T)...very frustrating when the technology that is supposed to enable your customer only frustrates them. I called the restaurant and was told that is wasn't J. Alexander's issue but an issue with Chow Now...also frustrating. J. Alexander's should think more about the customer experience when choosing technology partners. read more

Always the best!! Can't say enough! Always consistently perfect food. Great portions and service is top notch. Staff always paces food as not to overwhelm us with too much at a time. Have tried almost all of menu, and yet have a complaint about anything. They greet you from the first step into the restaurant and the awesome service continues throughout our dining experience. We love how intimate it can be with the low lighting and seating even though it is actually really busy!! Love the veggie burgers!! And the warm carrot cake is to die for!! I love this J Alexander's restaurant! It is hands down the best place in the entire area. This is a great place. and I'm sure I'm qualified to say this because I have eaten at both the Livonia and Somerset Troy hundreds of times! Which I definitely think the Livonia branch is better of the two, the food seems better prepared and more generous portions. First off its the best deal in steaks u can get hands down. The steaks are about 90% as good as Ruth Chris but less then half the price... Second its the best drink around... All Martinis come with a side car... So it is like 2 drinks in one... I highly recommend the Pomegranate martini, which is the best around because they make it with Real pomegranate (Pom) brand juice and vodka. Third, it has a beautiful interior. Very Dark and consist of almost entirely booths that are comfy. Also nice wood and visually appealing. Open kitchen and you can watch the chefs grill the steaks. read more

Me and my husband went for date night around 4:30 pm on a Friday and waited about 5-10 minutes for a table which I don't mind at all. The staff was very attentive getting our drink orders while we waited for our server. The spinach dip and Caesar salad came quick and tasted amazing. The burger was okay, not my favorite but it was cooked how I asked. My husband got salmon and mashed potatoes, he said that it was tasty but not worth $40. It's one of my favorite restaurants but it's gotten pricier each time we go. The ambiance is always beautiful, dim lights and pretty candles, nice and warm. read more

Had a reservation at 7:45, were seated at a very prompt 7:46. Hostesses were super polite & not overwhelmed by the fact that the waiting area looked like a millennium force line on the Fourth of July. Our waitress (& all waitresses that were tag teaming water refills & serving) were very attentive but didn't linger- which was perfect, because there's nothing more annoying than a waitress who wants to make friendship bracelets following a meal. Our app (queso dip) came out impossibly fast. As the frugal member of our party of two, I tried to sway my boyfriend away from getting an app because it was $13 - but boy am I glad h did. The pico was so fresh it tasted like the tomatoes were just picked from the vine, & each bite burst into a firework of flavor in your mouth. The queso (which, I don't even really like queso to begin with) was AMAZING. It wasn't that creepy, gloopy mess that makes you feel like you are scraping the last ten molecules out of a concession stand plastic cheese vat- rather, it was thin so each dipped chip was coated with the perfect punch of flavor. I ordered the fish tacos & my boyfriend ordered the chicken tender platter. I kid you not it felt like as soon as we placed the order the food was on the table. The fish tacos had amazing flavor and were thoroughly enjoyed. The chicken tenders were breaded to the nines and were so gorgeous I had to document them on portrait mode (see pic attached). - they did have some unfortunate chewy fatty pieces piggy backing upon the moist tender, which put us off a bit it I guess that's what you get when you order the delicious glorified children's meal. The shoe string fries were cooked to golden brown perfection- however, as they have a ton of surface area, they were unfortunately not piping hot when they hit the table. All in all we had an amazing dining experience at J Alexander's & will be returning..... hopefully next weekend if I get my way.....! read more

Still the exact same story as my initial review. It is where we come semi regularly when it is late and we don't know where we want to eat. They're in our rotation of 4 or 5 main places we go to. The benefit of coming here later is that there won't be a wait. We've made the mistake of coming here on a Friday or a Saturday earlier in the evening, and it is no fun. They do accept reservations, so it would be a good idea to make one on these two nights! They have prime rib here every day.. not just once a week on special.. and it is probably the best prime rib around. I could drink the au jus- no lie. Maybe I have.. I won't admit it, though! If you like your steak medium rare or rare be sure to order it on a heated plate, otherwise your prime rib will be cold. Then they'll take it back and it'll be returned slightly overcooked. Trust me, my husband goes through this a couple of times per month. Heated plate - Got it? Prime rib's too fatty and frankly too much work for me, so I usually get the fish special (especially when it's swordfish, my favorite) or the garlic steak - both are great. I ventured out to the pork loin recently and shouldn't have.. the sauce was super sticky cloyingly sweet, and awkwardly spicy. Steak, fish, or a salad is the way to go, here. Appetizer wise we really like the simplicity of the roasted artichokes.. the char makes all the difference! The heirloom beets side and the acorn squash (when they have it) are also amazing! read more

Went to eat here today around 2:30 in the afternoon. Restaurant not too busy, as expected with all going on... thought we were arriving at the perfect time. Drove 30 minutes from Milford to find out they are ONLY TAKING reservations and they were fully booked for the night so we could not be seated. NO WALK INS?!? This is my second review and by far our best experience to date. Have to say that this was such a wonderful time with our family. My father's birthday. Our special evening would not have been so wonderful without our newest member of our family....AKA Haily!! Best customer service and niece we could of asked for. At first she was a little stiff but as soon as it came time to order drinks and I had asked for a gin and tonic with 3 olives things started to get better. She asked what kinda of olives I wanted.. I told her unleaded and it appeared she was writing that down. My sister and I started laughing only to see Haily get a little stiffer and so I said that would be a green olive. She said oh, I don't really know olives. I said I had never met one either.. She looked puzzled and said oh that's awkward as she walked away. My sister and I were laughing loudly. We were by far the loudest table in the restaurant. Just having fun as our new family member soon found out. It took awhile for her to open up but she did ... Went there for an after work dinner... Overall it was very good...I ordered a white bean soup that was very very good and had a red curry sword fish that was on special again it was very good, however the slaw served with the dish just didn't make any sense nor did it go with the entree. I was a little perplexed by the pairing. They have an unusually small selection of appetizers, but had calamari however the breading soaked up way too much oil and was overly heavy because of it I definitely would not order again. Also has a queso that was very uninspired. The staff was spectacular however they seemed to be in bit of a hurry and everything felt rushed. The place itself is nice nicely decorated no complaints Really if I could give a half star I would put this at 3.5...would of been a 4 but the slaw pairing and the meh apps just don't deserve a 4 IMO. read more

What a great experience. An oasis from the horrible restaurant experiences of late. Oh, you will pay for it. But the service and food quality are worth every skipped meal at a lesser restaurant. I can't remember the last time every desire or possible enhancement to the dining experience was anticipated by the server without prompting. We had a party of 6, ordered in multiple courses and were all delighted. I've never been happier to leave a $50 or greater tip on any server for a 1 hour lunch. I don't know who J. Alexander is but I'm certain he and I would be homeboys. If I ever opened a restaurant, this would be the kind of place I'd want to have. Pro Tip - This place is almost always busy, consider sitting at the bar when you come or try to come in for lunch during the week. Otherwise, bring your patience - you will be waiting for probably a hour most nights. J's is by far one of my favorite "chain" restaurants. If one was closer to home I'd go here at least once a week, I like it that much. Even still, I've been here a lot. Both of my old lady's sisters used to be servers here during college so I've eaten a lot of their dishes and no bullshit, I've never had something I didn't like here. I've had everything from salads to steaks but my favorites hands down have to be the Rattlesnake Pasta and the Prime Rib. You will be hard pressed to find anything here that isn't great, provided it's prepared properly (which doesn't always happen from time to time hence why I can't drop a 5 spot on them but they would be a solid 4.5 if Yelp would allow it). But, management will always make it right if an issue is brought their attention. Other stuff I really like is the chicken pasta soup, any of their catch of the day's, pork tenderloin medallions, queso dip, steak and fries and the french dip. Pro Tip Numero Dos - If you get the Rattlesnake Pasta, ask for it with Penne noodles, holds the sauce much better than with the linguini! They are also a great place to celebrate special occasions. For years this has been our go to place for birthday's, it's centrally located for most of our family and they are super accommodating if you want to bring in your own cake or what have you. Not everyone is friendly to bringing your own stuff in but these guys definitely are and that's appreciated. Pro Tip #3 - This is more of an adult place so consider leaving your kids at home and make it a nice night out with the misses or another couple. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Michigan. I go there at least once a week. In my opinion, this is one of the most successful food chains because there staff are well trained, their food is consistent, their service is efficient, and you always get what you expect. Their French fries are amazing. I tried most items on their menu from starters, salads, soups and main courses. I love the Ahi tuna steak meal, the prime rib, and the baked potatoes. All of their salads are fresh and crispy. I sometimes go for the fish of the day and they are always good. Well done to the management! read more

We used to go to J's quite a bit -maybe every six weeks for several years up until about five years ago. The atmosphere seemed to be declining, they eliminated Alex's salad as a free option coming with an entree, raised prices on the prime rib considerably, etc. The quality of the food had also diminished. We decided to give them a try again after a movie with friends last night (a Saturday night, was quite busy). We were apprehensive but ended up pleasantly surprised and had a very good experience. They were accurate on the estimated wait time, were very attentive at the bar (standing room only down on the end) and gave very good, fair pours for the money on the drinks while we waited for a table. Two of us had Prime Rib, one Steak Brazzo and one Filet and everything was good. Both me and the wife had the prime rib and although it wasn't quite as tender as the "old J's", it was good. Our server, Zack was an excellent waiter. Polite and efficient and just the right level of attentiveness. Really good. We will definitely go back whereas we previously had all but sworn off going there again. read more

Staff was friendly and service was good..food is always good! Steaks, chicken burger, jacks chicken platter, side of Mac and cheese. House salad was a large portion as a side to the steak! Spinach and queso is always a good idea ! We were not able to make it to the carrot cake this time which was sad for all of us.. but you def should get it if you can! Only complaint I have.. I was carry balloons that said happy birthday and flowers.. the table we were seated at was a small booth my the door. I'm in love with what j Alexanders used to be... corporate changes deem the cooks using microwaves on all sides and desserts. They pre make all sides and put them in plastic bags. They are constantly increasing prices and decreasing portions and cutting quality. Quality used to be number 1 for j Alexanders.. anyways, the service is better here than the other locations. I just had my best experience at J. Alexander's ever and I have been to all of them in Michigan. My arrival had a little hiccup but Chelsey the Manager made sure the rest of my even was beyond amazing. I sat at the bar and both servers(I feel bad I don't remember there names) we both outstanding not only with my service but with others who were sitting near me. I drove over 30 mins and I promise I was not let down. This is my new favorite spot and I brought home carrot cake(the best in the world-if u don't believe me go try it). Stopped in yesterday for a quick lunch bettwren appointments back in the city. I usually sit at the Bar at j's. It's very comfortable and usually get exceptional service. This time was not any different. I ordered club soda with a lime in a short glass. So pretty and here they pour from ash hurt bottle so that you get maximum fizz. Nice. I ordered beet salad and Mac and cheese. Both sides. The wine listt here has always perplexed me. They have some really nice bottles on thE list but if you just wanted a glass there was nothing that really pleased me as a chardonnay drinker. But, stop the presses, they have opened up the Rombauer for glass pours. Happy day. What good news. The beet salad never disappoints hOwever the Mac and cheese has an herb crust that I was, personallyy, not fond oF. The server took it off the bill(I did not ask her to do this) and told me to order witHout breaDcrumbs nexT time. Alright. Didn't know that was an option. Cool. So to pad my bill a little bit because she was so accommodating I order carrot Cake to go. Shared with tHe hubs later that night. Delic. In my opinion their best dessert. It could feed four. A MUST visit restaurant anytime I'm back home in Michigan. From start to finish everything is always superb even when there's a wait, which there usually always is for dinner. I've recently become vegan so my options are a bit more limited now but even so, they still continue to surprise me. + FOOD - yum, yum, YUM! + Ambiance - dimly lit, relaxing, semi-casual atmosphere + Waitstaff - Always on top of their game - You may have to wait for a table during dinner hours unless you make a reservation - Would love to see more creative vegan options here As I stated above this is THEE spot to go to.
