I ordered the Avocado bomb this is why I came here for the 2nd time even though it's more than an hour away from me, I was just in the neighborhood, still ordered the same as last time, French dip with Aujus, my favorite, but this time, the Aujus is room temperature and it's hard to eat this sandwich if this not hot so I asked again for a hot or just put it in the microwave, 3 cup of aujus came with the same room temperature, so I finally asked them to just reheat these in the microwave and came perfectly hot, by then the bread is hardened but it's okay, I just ate the meat. The food was incredible. Lots of flavor and well put together! I'm weird about fish and the redfish was flavored to perfection. Their French fries are my favorite! Shoe string but still tender and crispy on the outside! We took our 20month old daughter for the first time and weren't sure if they had a kids menu but our wonderful server let us know they did and even offered to bring hers out as soon as it was ready so she could start eating! I've been here twice for lunch but am just now getting around to making a review. As far as chain restaurants go, this is superior to most when it comes to the Madison area (I'm looking at you, oddly capitalized Jonathan's). The restaurant is tucked away beside the ballpark, has ample parking, and a sleek interior. Service is always great here--the hostesses seat you promptly, the restaurant (including restrooms) are clean, and it's a bit dimly lit but you can still see yourself walk and not stumble on stairs. I'm a bit miffed as they don't over a lunch menu, per se, so everything is a bit overpriced for my tastes but they do the basics right. I ordered a burger, per usual, and it was overcooked (I ordered medium, it was well) but it still tasted good. The shoestring fries were a standout, however. Servers--we had two, both named Chris, and I think one was being trained--were kind and efficient. Our drinks were constantly refilled but we weren't hurried or overly attended to obnoxiously. This is a great spot for a business lunch (not too loud) or dinner if you're hankering for a chain that is steadily good in its output. My very first time here I was not pleased. I came for a family member's birthday dinner but I somewhat blame myself for eating tacos at a more "upscale" restaurant anyway. Service was good. However, the following 3 or 4 visits have usually been five stars when it comes to food. Can be a hit a miss with the server. Ambiance is always 5 stars. The porkchop is always a MUST. Huge portion with a delicious glaze. Their macaroni and cheese was wonderful. I also had their filet mignon and baked potato with broccoli here for my birthday back in 2024. Amazing. This year I came back for my birthday and got the crab cake dish with smashed potatoes, coleslaw and a mocktail drink that was 1000/10! Our server Cortez was very nice. One of my fave spots during the early aughts in San Antonio, TX. Definitively adult as patrons exercised the collective situational awareness of volume of meal chatter. Food quality was obvious, as was the consistency. Nicely dimly lit & was a craft cocktail bar prior to the 'craft cocktails' phenom. Hadn't been back since as I've lived several hours from a closest J Alexanders; maybe 9 years. Drove 7.5 hrs straight, checked into my hotel & went straightaway to the restaurant with hopeful excitement. Arrived at 8, seated in a booth next to a large family with a tired but energetic boy around 6 yo who was writhing in his seat, highly interested in my arrival. Not a good choice per the hostess; I wanted & needed the dim and low stimulation. Ordered a burger, blue cheese crumbles a sub for Tillamook cheddar ( I know), med-rare. Their fries are and always have been cold; consistency, not the good kind. Ordered produce for the burger on the side ( loathe hog, soggy produce on my burger) AND extra lettuce. Items arrive: fries of course cold, produce is on the side, only two rings of onion, extra lettuce turned out to be three partial tears of greenleaf. I am sorely disappointed J Alexanders of Huntsville. Half of the meal which was supposed to be hot was cold. The burger had only 3 small bleu cheese crumbles gathered on one side of the burger. One third of my requested extra lettuce ordered was warm, wet, completely wilted, & useless.-- herego, no extra lettuce. They ran out of my preferred wine before I could order. I'd like to stress that it was painfully obvious that although cooked properly, my burger was definitely frozen & tasted of it. There was no taste of meat; it had been brushed with what I imagine was a slurry of garlic butter to... compensate for the frozen taste (?) After 7.5 hrs of driving I was famished & upon receiving the meal, I did not send back, telling myself to eat what I could such that the return to the hotel would not find me trying to sleep, hungry. It was INCREDIBLY NOISY, the Gen Z & Millennials that littered the restaurant showing no care that it is a chill restaurant where others also want to chill. Seeking quiet( relative quiet mind you), I even inserted my noise canceling earbuds! Yes, that* loud; a cackling female waitstaff sounding to garner the attention she wanted, could be heard from any position in the establishment. This was all at 8pm, on a Thursday evening. Yes, too many years gone by. Too many younger patrons preferring to have what was once an upscale, American fare eatery, now was loud as a bar. Food quality has vanished; yes they serve large volumes. No, they should not serve meals that do not express their care for the quality and food prep. Yes, things change; no I am not a senior citizen. I will certainly never return to this location & will definitely do greater due diligence before dining at what was once a beloved eatery that served better quality food & more care & attention to that food. read more

BLUF: CHECK YOUR MOBILE ORDERS. Raw food. Sour food. I really remember when I first came here and the food was consistently delicious. At one point, I was spending well over $50 at least twice a week at this establishment. As time has passed, I have seen the managers come and go here and while they are kind, and the more recent times, I'm not sure what is going on, but seems like Their job has become more trying. Soy Yen was one of the most kindest, compassionate hostesses. She was one of the reasons that I continued to come back and spend my money here, in addition to the very kind and hard-working managers and waitresses/waiters that I was able to experience. I'm not sure what has specifically happened logistically, but these days, the orders are more inconsistent when doing takeouts. The last couple of times I sat in the restaurant, it was OK, there were some things I had to send back as well, but I will say they were fixed. More recently, I ordered a couple of things and received a completely raw burger that look like it just came off of the cow. My potato was so acidic and bitter, it was sour. I quickly called and management quickly handled and reimbursed me for my burger. I was really honestly not Sure why the entire order could not be reimbursed. This experience came short after I had another order previously and it took 45 minutes for me to receive bread on my to go order. I could go into a rabbit hole with that experience, but I'll leave it there. What I was told was that three hours before closing, the workers had thrown out the remainder of the bread and had to bake fresh bread. The inconsistencies are too often. Not really sure how long it will be before I return, but it's very unfortunate because I truly love this place. Just asking others to ensure that they check their mobile orders before they pick up and takeoff. And for a manager to express that there must've been a mixup and that is why my burger was completely raw, as I'm sure he is very overwhelmed with a full packed house, that was probably not the best solution to the issue. read more

We celebrated my husband's birthday last night at J. Alexander's. Our server, Jazz took excellent care of us. She asked if we were celebrating anything and of course, I let her know. She came back to the table with a birthday card including a hand-written message. Such a thoughtful gesture! Our food was fantastic, as usual. Eddie ordered the steak Maui and I had the lasagna. Yum! We were seated at a large, round table which fit the 6 of us perfectly. At the end of dinner Jazz brought out a large piece of warm carrot cake and 6 spoons. It even had a little candle on it! Everything was perfect! We had several dirty martinis, which at $17 each plus "liquor tax", it was pricey. We spent nearly $250 so that was more than I had anticipated, but since the evening was so great, I can't complain. Highly recommend! read more

We went to J Alexanders for Lunch. It was nice that I could make a reservation for just the two of us. When we arrived we were immediately taken to our booth. Our server was very friendly and efficient. She cam to our booth and asked about water, and took our drink orders. We ordered the chicken with fresh salad and the pecan encrusted trout. Our drinks were served quickly and tasted very good. Our meals were brought out quickly as well. The salad was freshly made and was a nice size salad. The chicken pieces were large, hot and freshly made. The salad was a good sized portion. The pecan encrusted trout was served hot, freshly made and was also a good sized portion. The fish came with rice and it too was delicious. Both of these dishes were perfect temperature. The fish was well made and cooked perfectly. I kind of hate to leave 2 stars because the food was okay, but...considering everything else, I just don't think I can justify a 3. I arrived for a late lunch last Wednesday. I'd had a long and challenging couple of weeks but felt I'd triumphed; I was in the area, finished with work, and thought why not reward myself with something special? This upscale restaurant is located near enough to the Trash Pandas stadium that you can hear the music/announcements from the spacious parking lot. Wonder if that would be disruptive during an outdoor meal? Idk, I sat inside. The restaurant looks even larger on the inside than the outside. It's pretty, modern, and clean, but perhaps a little generic looking and, I feel, a tiny bit on the casual-side -- at least in comparison to the price point. I'm not usually so critical about this kind of stuff, but...well, I'll get there. The hosts are stationed to your right as you walk in. They weren't super busy but it took them a moment or two to acknowledge me. Once greeted, they suggested I could sit at the bar since I was dining solo, or I could have a booth. I requested a booth and they seemed veryyyy slightly miffed, but took me to one anyway. One thing I noticed while perusing the menu is the restaurant is LOUD. They were maybe at like 15% capacity and it wasn't the quiet, intimate affair I expect of fancier restaurants. Perhaps it feels more romantic/decadent at night with candles lit, but it felt once again pretty generic and informal during the daylight. My waitress was...very lackluster. Not rude, but distinctly curt and didn't seem super interested in ensuring I had a pleasant visit. I had to wait for my meal to be delivered just so I could ask for a straw for my drink. She never once asked if I liked my food, needed anything else, wanted a dessert, etc. Only machine-like delivery of beverage and entree. Worse, I was very thirsty and drained my tea quite quickly; no refill was forthcoming until I'd all but finished my meal, despite her making eye contact with me at least twice. Again, I swear I'm usually not a jerk or even very particular about lackluster service; I understand the industry is difficult and unforgiving and I try to be as patient and generous as I can. But...this price point really feels like more attention should be warranted. One big complaint for me is that there's no lunch menu here; all full-dinner prices all the time. Still, I was determined to get the complete experience because I didn't know if I'd come back or not, so I ordered the steak and fries with a sweet tea to drink. I enjoyed my tea except for my inability to get a timely refill. My food arrived quickly and was clearly cooked fresh. The steak was slightly closer to a medium-well than the medium I ordered, which I honestly thought was pretty funny given their dogged insistence that they won't cook well-done steaks. The fries were crispy and plentiful. The steak was tender enough but not remarkably so; the most notable thing about it was that it was quite salty -- probably from the maitre d butter they used to finish it. Again -- it was not intolerably salty -- but paired with the fries, it only further increased my need for more tea. Overall, I'd say the food was good. I enjoyed it. But it was maybe only 15% better than a good Outback steak experience, at far more than double the price. My meal -- entree and non-alcoholic beverage only + 18% tip -- was only just shy of $50. For lunch. For one person. Again, there was nothing overtly bad about my experience. But if I'm really going to pay ~$50 for a meal (at lunch!!), it really, really needs to WOW on all fronts. And I can't say that J. Alexander's did. It's unlikely I'll find my way back here again, given the infrequency at which I do ~fancy~, but perhaps others will have a more positive experience than me. read more

The food was excellent. I got the deviled eggs and steak braze special. The proportions were huge. I had a side salad that was large enough to be an entree. Gotta say, I rarely order a full steak when eating out, I enjoy them occasionally but only because I don't like making them at home. Still, this place left me underwhelmed. I joined a friend for her birthday dinner, and had a great time with friends, service was good, and the menu had a decent selection to choose from. We were happy to try this place for the first time, and I think everyone really loved their food, and mine was fine but that's about it. The place looks nice, and it's very dark, but it didn't really feel as upscale as others have mentioned. It's a lovely place, but not uppity enough to call it upscale, but it's Huntsville, nothing here is truly upscale. I ordered the steak Maui, which is a marinated ribeye, cooked medium rare. It had a decent flavor in the marinade, but it was a bit chewy, and even had a big chunk of cartilage not noticeable because of the sauce initially. I have had ribeye before, so even as not a steak person, I am familiar with this cut. The "smashed" (mashed) potatoes were good but average. The food was alright, but for $44 for the entree alone I wouldn't return. The non steak options sounded great but being a steakhouse I felt I had to try the steak, and it didn't wow me. read more

The restaurant was a little loud, but not surprising and we were able to still hear each other at our table. Our waiter was friendly, and offered good suggestions when asked. I had the crab cakes, which everyone agreed was the best meal at the table. The portions are LARGE, so it is definitely worth the price. The food was extremely bland and boring. Absolutely nothing special about any of our meals. The Steak Frites is just a hunk of overcooked sirloin (asked for medium) with fries. No sauce, No Flavor! The prime rib was bad. Tasted like it didn't even have salt. Same with the sandwich, absolutely NO flavor. You'd think the au jus sauce would help but it was awful. I'd think of giving them another try but I wouldn't waste the money on their overpriced, uninventive menu. Sadly disappointed with yet another tasteless restaurant in Rocket City. read more

Food is outstanding, my husband ordered the chicken tender plate, I had the grilled salmon (I sub'ed the orzo and wild rice for steamed broccoli) our son although 9 years old .... ordered the rack of ribs (he's somewhat picky) and loved them. We also indulged in dessert...key lime pie, white chocolate crème brûlée and chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. The portions of dessert are enough to share, we boxed up all 3 and took what was left home. My son's rib entree yielded plenty of leftovers. 2. I got a lifetime BAN from J. Alexander's!!!!!! They literally never brought our food to us with the exception of my salad that they messed up twice! The server Temperance was checked out and nowhere to be found. We literally wasted over an hour of our time sitting waiting for our food and left starving. People that came in after us were getting their food before us! I got frustrated and walked out. They watched me walk out. I expected them to stop me on the way out and apologize. That was a year ago. I was hoping that the restaurant improved in the last year because this last visit was disastrous. We literally just got kicked out of there. The manager Mark very rudely approached us and told us leave. At first I thought he was joking. I actually thought that he was coming to apologize and let us know that what happened last time would not happen again . Instead we were told that we were not allowed to eat there for not paying our tab and walking out. He literally accused us of dining and dashing and that is not what happened. We didn't dine but dashed after waiting over an hour! I tried explaining to the manager Mark that we never got our food and he could care less. So you want me to wait an hour, not get any food except my salad that I didn't even eat but pay my bill that you never even brought to me?! If a manager had come over to me and apologized for the long delay and offered to package my food to go and brought me my bill I would have happily paid. I ate at J's several times a week for well over a year. Unfortunately, the food quality and service had started to severely go downhill starting early 2023. It was getting to the point of constant issues so the visit I walked out was the straw that broke the camels back. J. Alexander's needs to get their act together. I was hoping that things had changed and improved but I see that they have even further deteriorated. So sad because we ate there several times a week. Be prepared if you eat here to have slow service and your order screwed up! The restaurant was nice, clean, and outstanding the first year they opened. Now it's loud, dirty, and not what you think of for fine dining. To top it off, this manager Mark is a real mean piece of work!
