Dinner: 3 stars per Yelp is "A-Ok". $10 for a modest sized salad? Granted it was hard to discern the full size without a miner's hat and light - I certainly felt like we were sitting in a dark cave. A noisy dark cave. The salad tasted fresh and the Maui steak had a great flavor. Too dark to tell if the meat was cooked rare or well done but the slices of fat (that I usually cut off) looked just like the meat so eat bite was a surprise. Gotta bring a flashlight next time. Well..... Sadly, Redland's Grill is NOT J. Alexander's for sure. The carpet was wet and stunk. The table had salt spilled on it and got all over our arms. The condiments were not filled up. The restroom had an actual brick of some sort holding up a sink for God's sake. No Toilet paper in my stall. Our server did not know the menu. She never refilled our glasses, hung OVER the booth at the end of our row towards the wine closet to fawn over a regular customer that had sat down. She never removed our plates as we finished. Two of the male servers could not keep their hands out of their hair scratching at their scalps. We noticed that there were menus placed by where the servers rang their food in. Sad. In the olden days, those J servers knew the menu front to back and actually showed pride in their knowledge. Not anymore. I always wonder why a corporation that has a perfect business model, changes the menu. Why mess with what used to be perfection? I miss rolling up a straw wrapper and placing it at the end of our table and having a server pick it up immediately. I miss the salsa with Radishes and cucumbers. I miss the Croissants. I really miss the exemplary service and attention to every single detail. There is no pride with the staff now. None. Not in their service OR appearance. This was always our go to place, and we NEVER minded paying a high price for the perfection that once was. Whomever is the general manager now has really let this place go to an "Applebee's" type of restaurant. Actually, I have had better service at "Applebee's" so I shouldn't use that reference. It is not the elegant perfection it once was. The corporate office should be ashamed and do an intervention with the manager and staff! I feel like I'm grieving. Service and food quality has really deteriorated here. Been going to this restaurant for 25 years and the last 2 times it has further downhill. Smelly carpet in the dining room, portions have been downsized but prices have not - French dip is a great example, the sandwich is half the size of what it was even a year ago but price is still the same. Waited 20 minutes to get a glass of wine and a cocktail and the place wasn't even busy. This was a Sunday so not sure if staff is different then but they are not trained the way they used to be. Much prefer Houston's over this place now and it used to be the other way around. I will not be going back. read more

I have not been to J. Alexander's in years because I moved to a location that didn't have one. My wife and I used to love frequenting this place. Although I have been here several times, I have never had their prime rib. Every once in a while you run into someone who doesn't live up to your expectation. Now to the food :) I'm a big fan of the Spanish queso I decided to try something different tonight. The restaurant was dark, looked dirty, and smelled. The carpet was torn and coming up by the stairs we went up to go to our table. For a starter I ordered the potato soup, it was horrible. For my meal I ordered the $36 filet with mushrooms and it was disgusting. I took one bite and that's all. The steak was so tough it was hard to cut and had zero flavor. It was Fathers Day so my husband ordered off the special menu. He ordered the $43 tuna that was supposed to come with 2 starters and 2 sides. He did not get the starters. We asked and the waiter said you had to pay extra for those even though there were no prices on the menu. When they brought his meal the 2 sides were on the plate that we did not order. It did not make sense. The tuna stunk and was covered in something resembling hollandaise sauce. He also took one bite and nothing more. This was a very interesting experience we had on our family trip J alexander's. We decided to eat outside the my wife and child. When we were sitting there was this couple next to us that was that was enjoying their date making out and having fun. The young lady had an extremely low cut top and everytime she moved her entire breast was exposed. We politely confronted the young lady and she said oh well! Next step is to to the manager Taylor as it was not appropriate for my daughter see. This was not a strip club and should be a more upscale dining experience. Taylor did not move the couple or us so that we could enjoy our meal without the indecent exposure to my child. I got up and complained more and we were eventually moves inside. After we paid our bill the manager Taylor apologized for the actions but stated that there was nothing that she could have done. We are used to eating spicy food, but the Nashville hot chicken sandwich was so hot that it was inedible. The steak frites needed salt and wasn't worth what we paid for it. Just those two dishes cost a total of $50. Finally, and this is the worst, there was no curbside offered; I was directed to the bar where people seated were socially distanced to the bare minimum, and where it was impossible to social distance while standing waiting on the bartender to give us our order.
