This was our favorite restaurant but not any longer! It has changed and not for the better! We went early on a Saturday. Only one other table had guests. Sat in a booth. Hostess seated a table with a booth between us and new guests. Ordered food. Order was wrong. Item missing from my order. My husband gave me his item and had to ask waiter to replace his. Not a big deal but this probably would not have happened in the past. When we were almost finished with our meal, the hostess seated three people in the booth right behind us. Two people were less than 12 inches from my husband! We asked about social distancing and got some sort of lame explanation about people requesting specific tables which made no sense at all. We were asked if we wanted to move to another table. It would have made much more sense to have the people at the other table move since they did not even have water yet! We declined and finished our meal. Upon leaving, the manager came up to us and once again asked if we wanted to move to another table! We told him we were leaving and would not be returning. He just stood there and said absolutely nothing and staring at us not knowling what to say. We felt disrespected in a way that was obviously important to us but not to the employees of the restaurant! And because of that, we will now go elsewhere. We normally do not complain, but this most definitely could have been handled in a more reasonable and sensitive way. We are in a high risk population for Covid-19 and would like to know that any establishment we choose to spend our money in will at least be a bit more cognizant of our needs in the environment we all are currently having to live in!! read more

We went here for the first time on a Sunday afternoon and it was not crowded at all. The host was very helpful and answered all our questions. We ordered fried calamari for the appetizer and it was nice and tender, not the usual rubber tire texture that you get at other places. We ended up ordering the Carolina crab cakes with macaroni and cheese. Everything was absolutely perfect! In addition, we ordered the carrot cake and chocolate bundt one to share with others. The carrot cake was absolutely the best one I've ever had in a restaurant. The cream cheese frosting was melted over the cake which was so good. The chocolate cake comes with vanilla ice cream and was delicious as well. This will definitely be a repeat on our restaurant list! read more

Disappointed. Very. I have been a patron of J Alexander's over twenty years- especially for special occasions. This time, around 3-4pm my steak Maui was inedible. While the flavor was good the meat was just too tough to eat! I replaced the steak with the mahi-mahi, which was the Daley special and the strong fish smell was almost unbearable. While the service was good, and the ambience nice as always, I get the impression that their standards have been lowered as it relates to the food. My husband's chicken was so dry. He needed to use the au jus with it. Not J Alex standards. Upon investigation and I saw they had been purchased by Logan's steakhouse back in 2021 so maybe that is the problem. This will no longer be my go to place. I can go to Texas roadhouse or somewhere else Longhorn for steak at $20 versus the $50 that J Alex charges. Leslie, I am convinced the pomegranate martini now uses syrup instead of pomegranate juice, and it took forever for those drinks to come out, even though there were only a handful of tables in the restaurant. read more

I've eaten at this restaurant multiple times over the years and the food has consistently disappointed me. Tonight I ate the fishiest and oiliest salmon I've ever had, I couldn't even finish it. Everyone else at my table seemed to enjoy their meal though. I've tried the filet and pasta before too and each time I forced myself to finish them to be polite. The service and ambience do not match the actual quality of food, which is quite a bummer as my family chooses frequently to eat out there. read more

We joined friends for dinner the other night and I was so impressed. Alex salad has a nice variety of greens and fresh long matchstick carrots! Their dressings are homemade. We had the shrimp for appetizer and it arrived with two dips both of which were delicious. The Maui steak is one of their popular dishes and it had a wonderful flavor. I particularly enjoyed the blue cheese steak and will order it again! Then, lastly yet very important is their carrot cake it is served warm and there are too many positives to list, a definite must! read more

The only thing barring a 5 star review is a party was seated directly behind us in the booth when there were numerous other seating options. A minor thing for some but we were birthday celebrating with an 85yo. But the food, ah the food. Excellent. Do I find it embarrassing to confess all 3 of us completely cleaned our plates....Nope. This was a pleasant dinner. We didn't have a reservation but were seated quickly even though it was quite busy. The atmosphere is rustic with large exposed beams, dark carpeting and low lights away from the tables. Our server was very friendly and the serving team tried to work together to provide our needs. We had the calamari appetizer and I had the Ahi for dinner with vegetables. Food was excellent and played very well. Prices were a little to the expensive side but not too much. Only mistake was my dining companion ordered a 2nd glass of wine which was delivered as we received the bill. A little late. Overall a nice place to eat and would come here again. read more

We were treated here today for lunch by our client, KMBC 9. We had reservations at 12:30pm & was seated maybe 5-10 minutes after. They were extremely busy so it's understandable. The ambiance there was nice & everyone seemed friendly. Noise level was sort of loud so it's somewhat hard to have a conversation unless you are really close to each other. Our waitress was friendly & polite. I ordered the Filet Mignon & replaced the baked potato with Mac-N-Cheese. I wanted medium but received medium well. Boo. I still ate it because I was already hungry. The Mac-n-cheese was cheesy & it was good. My co-workers ordered the fish tacos, rotisserie chicken & steak burger. No complaints from them so I assumed they enjoyed their food. Overall, I enjoyed my visit & will come back in the future. read more

My wife and I along with several adult family had dinner a few nights ago at the Overland Park JA. I left that evening with quite mixed feelings that I have not had in past years of dining at this (perhaps formerly) upscale and still expensive restaurant. Regarding the food, it was as delicious as in past years and I have no complaint. On the other hand, the service seemed a real notch downhill compared to my past experience. Perhaps minor, but first I noted that despite a dinner that cost almost $300, the server (rarely seen) never brought our table any dinner rolls. But more notably, the final bill was simply dropped on our table as a little scrap of paper. There was no formality or consideration of a private folder or even a clean dish for payment of the bill. In the end I was left with dolling out (in clear view of my guests) a pile of hundreds of dollars in cash left on the table. This was certainly a crude way to handle the billing. In the future I hope that your servers will be properly trained to present the bill to the group host in a more discreet manner. A polite manner better fitting the upscale nature of Alexander's - instead of a roadside dinner. read more

One of my favorite steakhouses in town. I have gone here since I was a child, and it's always been a great experience. Their filet is amazing, as well as every seafood dish I've ever tasted. Their house salad is one of the best salads I've had. Homemade croutons are amazing. And dessert- chocolate cake and carrot cake are both divine. This is a great place for families and romantic dates. Service is always excellent and prompt. read more

Still 5 stars!!! NEVER a bad experience at J Alexanders. This marks something like 16+ visits here now when I'm in town for work. This time I ordered my go-to steak the Kansas city strip. Although I ordered medium, it did come out slightly over, but not enough to warrant sending back, and of course still fantastic! NYO Mac and Cheese was heavenly and just as I remembered (its been about a year since the last visit) Spinach Queso was incredible and bursting with a real cheese and creamy spinach flavor unlike the stuff you get at other places. My co worker ordered the Seared Ahi Tuna and said it was perfect. Incredibly attentive staff without being overbearing, and an atmosphere that I personally adore! All this for a very reasonable price... J Alexanders simply can not be beat! read more

We had the best first experience at J. Alexander's on Sunday! It was definitely a treat as my boyfriend and I wouldn't normally choose this spot because of the pricey menu but I can say confidently..it was worth it. The service was phenomenal. The waiter was knowledgeable about the menu, wine list, and specials. We ordered smoked salmon dip and deviled eggs for an appetizer. Between the four of us it was definitely enough and I strongly recommend the smoked salmon dip. It's creamy and the smoky flavor isn't overpowering. I didn't try the deviled eggs but my boyfriend and parents raved about them. I ordered the filet kebabs (one of the specials) and was informed by the manager about twenty minutes later that they'd actually run out. She was genuinely apologetic and gave us a free appetizer and free entree for me. She went above and beyond to make it right and we really appreciated it! My boyfriend ordered the Steak Maui and said it was well marbled and cooked to perfection. He got a side of the "Not Your Ordinary Mac & Cheese" which meant I got some and it was insanely delicious and a huge serving for only $5. Overall, J. Alexander's really blew us away between the quality of the food and quality of customer service. We'll definitely be back for special occasions! read more

Going downhill fast. Food came out before drinks ever did. Younger sever could care less or notice. Had to go to the bar to get drinks ourself. We planned to order desserts and after dinner drinks but couldn't get out of there fast enough. This is not the JAlex we have gone to for the past 20 years. Fantastic!! Our server was awesome. Funny and helpful and attentive!! We had the Mexican queso which was seriously incredible. Hubs had the steak & frites which were both cooked perfectly. I had the sandwich special which was also amazing. Drinks were kept full and our waiter even brought us extra chips without us asking so we could finish every bite of our queso.
