For $20, the veggie burger plus drink left me feeling disappointed. It wasn't bad, but the price/performance/service ratio is off. I'd for work dinners, but it's not great for a date or a quick bite, despite being dimly lit (I always get suspicious of what kind of dust and dirty floors they may be trying to hide). They present as trying to be upscale but they fall short, unfortunately. Dined here late afternoon a few days ago. Service was fabulous (Brian) who gave us plenty of time to not just eat but "dine". It was nice not to feel rushed on a busy night. My second time coming to this location. First time the experience was good but last night I dined there with a friend who was of a different nationality from me. The server was very attentive but when the manager came by our table to ask how the dinner was, he specifically turned to my friend & only asked him & then walked away. He intentionally did not ask me or address me. It was an obvious disregard and racist gesture toward me and we both picked up on it. Neither of us will be back. I've been to other J. This experience is a 9 out of 10 .. we come here for dates, birthdays, and have recently visited for an anniversary party. Tried this sister establishment of Stoney River (from Chapel Hill) and knowing how much we enjoyed Stoney River, we thought we couldn't resist comparing. We were not disappointed. Top notch food, freshly prepared, top notch service, great bar service and wine options. Just couldn't find anything that I'd ding them a star for at all. Wife had the BBQ which was delish, and her fave Mac n Cheese was quite a treat. She had to take some home. I had the pork tenderloin, just amazing. I cut it with my fork only. We cheated a bit with the finale of Key Lime Pie, truly delicious. Not too tart or sweet, and the graham cracker crust was extra thick, just how I love it (on those rare occasions when I have dessert). Needless to say, we'll be back. read more

Last night my wife of 43 years revisited J. Alexander's for date night. The evening was perfect. It started with the manager Tremain greeting us. We asked for a table for two. After looking at the seating chart, Tremain asked if we would like a booth. Of course we did, but being asked was awesome. After leading us to our booth he shared with us that Luther would be our waiter. Luther was really polished, professional waiter for a man, I'm guessing, of 21 to 23. He took our drink order and went through the specials. The two cocktails were so tasty and beautifully presented. Her Martini was severe with a small carafe place in a large goblet of chill sparkling soda. Awesome. There receipt for their old fashioned was equally presented and well balance. It got better when dinner was served. We both got a special, crab cakes for her and the Cajun ribeye for me. Desert was apiece of warm carrot cake for two. Came here to celebrate my birthday, when our server greeted us our card said "birthday" so she automatically started off by saying happy birthday and she'll offer us a selection of dessert items at the end. How it was worded made it sound like the dessert would be complementary to celebrate the occasion. When we received our birthday pie it looked as if someone had taken a bite out of the front, I didn't say anything since I thought it was free, but in fact it was not. I never give five stars to a chain restaurant, i tend to reserve those for individually owned places competing with them but this place earned it tonight. My first time here started with the calamari, it's not on the regular menu but a special appetizer served occasionally. If you're lucky enough to come here when they have it you have to try it, for the marinara sauce alone. That sauce puts ANY Italian restaurant's I've ever had to shame, and I've had a lot. For our entrees my wife ordered the crab cakes and i ordered another special, the sliced ribeye. The crab cakes were lump and back-fin, very little filler and cooked with a crust on the outside. She changed the sides to the Mac and cheese and orzo with wild rice and was much more than anyone should eat. A quality dinner and tasted great. The ribeye was simply amazing. They cooked it perfectly, medium rare and juicy and flavorful and one of the best steaks I've ever eaten, anywhere, for only $35! Accompanied by a baked potato i struggled to finish the entire plate but there was no way i was ruining that meat by taking it home. The surprising thing about the steak was the house made Worcestershire sauce. I don't eat sauce on my steaks but i was basically drinking that. The atmosphere was great, our server, Victoria, was amazing. We will be back. Prime Rib next time! read more

We were seated immediately and our server was very responsive. We got the steak roll-ups which was the highlight of our meals. Our entrees (mine the pork tenderloin and my gf the chicken) were OK but nothing I'd go back and order again. Ambiance was fine, if a little dark & noisy. We had a party of 8, including a 1YO in a high chair and a wheelchair bound relative. We arrived in two separate groups, with our group of 4 about 20 minutes early. We were prepared to wait, but were seated immediately. Our waiter took care of every detail, patiently explaining the specials multiple times as others arrived. The quality and quantity of the food was excellent, with generous portions, well plated. The crabcakes, though expensive, were meaty and cooked perfectly. The slaw was crisp and not overly dressed. Steaks and fried chicken were reported to be excellent. We also had 2 orders of the Ahi Burger. The presentation is good, with greens and aioli on a competent bun. In my opinion, the burger is a bit under flavored. With this entree, swapping the fries for slaw might be a better flavor balance. Or adding grilled onions and jalapeños! :-) For desert, all 8 of us shared a single order of the decadent monster sized ice cream cake(?). Even with dividing it into many portions, there were adequate servings. Be careful of ordering this beast of a dessert in a smaller crowd! Ate here during the first weekend in July. It was my first time here. The ambiance is really romantic with dimmed lighting. Staffers are really nice and attentive. I attended a birthday dinner here and I will say if you have a huge party like more than 9 then you all will be sitting at different tables. I believe their big round table only held 9-10 if that. We decided to try this place out for date night and were impressed with the diverse selection of food. If you like seafood, they have options. Sushi? Not a problem. Wood-grilled steaks? They've got it. The first thing you notice when you walk in the door is their vast wine selection, dark wood tables, walls adorned with local paintings and a romantic low light to set the mood. Our service was very prompt and our server was very attentive. She described all of the dishes in detail and made everything sound so tasty that we ordered more than we could finish. We were pleasantly surprised with the sushi, carpaccio, new york strip, filet with bearnaise sauce, pear martini, and Moscow mule. Everything was very flavorful and delicious. We have eaten here twice and been very happy with each visit. Great location, clean resultant, consistently great service, and the food has been outstanding. We've tired a few things on the menu from Burgers (outstanding), shrimp, sushi... have not tried anything I've not completely enjoyed. First time to this location and it did not disappoint! Everything was so delicious. I ordered the filet mignon with loaded baked potato and a house salad. The steak was so tender and seasoned to perfection. For a filet it was very large. Only ate half and ate the rest the next night and it was still delicious the next night. My fiancé had the ribeye with Mac n cheese and cream of spinach. The sides were killer! We both had enough food left over to eat off the next day. So I went here when it first opened, for lunch. I was not impressed by the service or food for the price. Been now about a year so took my Wife for dinner. It is nice for dinner, candles lit on the table (except for ours), relatively quite. Otherwise would be a nice date night type of place. Waiter was attentive but the food is what you come for and it was below par. I ordered Filet, figured I would splurge and try the best thing on the menu this time. It was suppose to come with mashed potatoes but they delivered with fries, totally incorrect match for a Filet, they replaced with the mashed, but seriously. But the bad part was the Filet. A properly marinated and cooked filet should melt in your mouth, this was was chewy (charred black on the outside), and had no taste whatsoever. What a wasted piece of meat, not to mention $30. My wife's dish was also un-exemplary. We did bother with desert. I have no idea how folks are rating this place 4 and 5 stars, unless they don't get out much. Beautiful decor, great food, very attentive staff. It's evident that a lot of effort went into hiring and training a team that could provide a consistently good customer experience. I happened to be dining alone on this visit. At most restaurants my requests for "a table for one" are usually met with a condescending "Oh...Would you like to sit in the bar area [where the bartenders will be providing awful meal service as they focus on fixing cocktails for the entire restaurant]?" That was definitely not the experience I had at J Alexanders. I felt welcomed from the moment I stepped inside. From the candor of the server (Amy) whose recommendations were spot on, to the attentiveness of the entire wait staff, to the GENUINE concern that the manager showed...my experience was nothing but positive. Even the water I had with my meal was the perfect temperature! I'll definitely return. Had lunch with some friends yesterday at J. Alexander. The service has amazing. Very fast and friendly. Felt like I was eating at a fine dining restaurant. I had the steakhouse burger which was cooked to perfection with a side of fries. We shared an order of roasted Brussels sprouts which were also delicious. My friend is a vegetarian and she ordered the veggie burger. The veggie burger was juicy and cooked to perfection. My other friend had the ahi tuna sandwich. The tuna is flown in fresh daily. I went for my friends birthday...lets just say complete failure. First the reservations- we had a reservation for a party of 8 at 9:15. We had to wait for about 50 minutes because they had people still sitting where we were suppose to be seated at. But we had a reservation. Now, the manager did take care of a first round of drinks and appetizers--nice. Second- the table we sat at the smallest round table with low seats. I still don't think that was where we were suppose go sit at, but whatever. Third the food- everyone ordered and got their food first BEFORE THE BIRTHDAY GIRL. We even had people come waaaaay after we ordered and they got their food before her. No lie, she got her food when it was time for them to close. Also, no one told her anything about her food being late. The only time our waitress even said anything was because she saw the birthday girl stand up in shocked at the fact that everyone was eating but her. Then the waitress smirked from the checkout stand and said "your food us coming." Thats it!? She didn't even go check on it. (Ruth Chris would NEVER) So, the birthday girl got up ran to the kitchen, yelling at the cooks asking where her food was at. It was a mess! Alexander's several times and have wanted to have dinner here, so tonight I made it happen. I started with the spinach queso and it was delicious. I highly recommend this to everyone! I then got my entree - prime rib. I ordered it medium rare and it was overdone. What a complete disappointment, I love prime rib. I just couldn't eat it. The server asked if I wanted a dessert - no, I don't like dessert. I was very surprised a manager never came by the table also. Oh well, I gave it a try and liked the queso. I won't return and really don't recommend it for a steak since there are many other choices in the area for excellent steaks. read more

A-Ok sums it up pretty well. J. Alexander's is a convenient choice for a meal if you are shopping at Crabtree Mall. I went here with my parents and husband for dinner on a weeknight. They have a variety of choices on their menu, from sandwiches to seafood to salads and more. They even have a section dedicated to sushi. For my meal I decided on the fried shrimp plate which came with fries and slaw. The shrimp were jumbo shrimp and had good flavor. The fries were good but pretty standard. I did not eat the slaw, but I am not a fan of slaw in general. My family tried a variety of food- a sandwich, Greek salad and swordfish. My husband liked the swordfish but did not care for the rice dish underneath. Our server was nice, but to be honest I had this feeling of being pressured to order more (appetizers, dessert, etc) when all we really wanted was our entrees. The prices on their meals to me were a little too high. Most of the sandwiches were in the $15+ range which to me is too much for a sandwich. It is probably not worth it to me to make J. Alexander's a regular spot when you can find similar food at lower prices. The food is good but to me not quite that good. I'm glad I got to try it out though! read more
