What a fun and fancy steak house J Alexanders is! I have been twice and loved both experiences (pre-covid of course). The atmosphere is dark, classy, and moody and the staff are polite and orderly making for an up-scale feel. I have yet to try an alcoholic beverage here as I don't drink often, but I hear they are tasty. Their mashed potatoes are one of my favorite parts of the meal (aside from the juicy, tender, and delicious steak of course!). This is a great restaurant for an anniversary, birthday, special occasion, or a just-because dinner. It's pricey but personally I think it's worth it. Hosts and bartenders are consistently nice. I like the atmosphere - upscale and intimate. I like that it's not actually in the mall. Parking is normally a breeze. It takes a while for food to appear, even at lunch. Maybe they really are hand-crafting everything? The food is hit or miss. The misses aren't horrible, and the hits are pretty great, so it's hard to judge. The burgers are a pretty solid choice and all potato sides (fries, baked, mashed). The specials can be amazing - they had a crusted cod this spring that was to die for. Hot food is not always served hot, even when not busy and dining alone (not waiting for food for others in party). It would be great if they had a dessert menu online. I understand they rotate dishes, but sometimes I choose a restaurant for a meal based on their desserts. read more

I have been to several J Alexander's in different states. This is the first one that didn't offer Rattlesnake pasta on the menu. When I ask our server, she said it was never offered on the menu at this location . How is this possible. It's a staple and original of J Alex. Extremely disappointed! This is an excellent restaurant to go to for any occasion. My wife and I came here for a Christmas Eve dinner and just recently for our anniversary. It is a great, intimate atmosphere. A lot of business people come here for meetings over lunch and dinner as well. The wait staff is knowledgeable and makes good recommendations on entrees and deserts. We've taken their advice both times and clean our plates. The food is phenomenal. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

Four of us had dinner, with appetizers and a variety of entrees - 7pm on a weekend. The restaurant is well-spaced for Covid, and seem to be taking precautions seriously. That's about the best they have at this time. The food is just "meh." It's not horrible, but it's definitely not anything anyone should rave about. Steak was something someone could easily get at Golden Corral; chocolate cake for dessert tasted like cardboard with chocolate icing;, deviled eggs were the best part of the meal. The food is in line with a lower-end chain restaurant - nothing that will leave you rushing back in a month to have more. I would have given them three stars but during middle of the evening, the smell of marijuana started wafting through the restaurant. It was so strong, it seemed to be coming from inside the restaurant or right at an open door where someone was standing. I would expect this in Michigan, but not in Raleigh. It just takes away the ambiance from a several hundred dollar dining experience. Overall, there are tons of better restaurants in Raleigh; much better food and atmosphere. I would rate this as a bit higher scale than Long Horn but not up to the level of a Morton's. I had the Cajun Ribeye (without the Cajun seasoning because that just felt strange), and my wife had the Steak Frites. Both steaks were cooked to medium as ordered. We hadn't eaten here but the menu looked promising so we gave it a shot and were pleasantly surprised. Our server was very attentive and did a great job, everyone in the staff we encountered were very friendly and warm. 5 stars for service and off to a great start. Next is the food, it was great and the portion sizes are enormous! Yesterday was my worst experience at J's, I order a simple cheeseburger med/well more on the well side and not burnt. Once I cut my burger in half it was so red it was barely cooked. Our server (who never gave us his name) could not be found. Another server, a young woman passed by and I asked her if she could get this fixed she said of course, but was back within minutes and my burger looked more microwaved than anything. The young woman apologized and i asked for a new burger she said of course, then our server came by said he would check on the new burger. Inbthe meantime I asked for the manager who took her sweet time getting to us. I explained what happen she never gave me her name either. The manager didn't offer to comp my burger, said a new one was being made. I had to ask the manager her name which is Casey. Per my request she comped my burger and then brought me back fresh fries and my same burger that was cut in half already. After taking my food home because my friend was finished her food, when I looked at it the original cheese was scraped off because I had put ketchup on the original raw burger. I'm glad I asked for her to comp that burger. Because all they did was reheat my old burger. Never did they give me a brand new burger that wad cooked correctly . Great food but poor service. The one in Troy, Michigan puts their restaurant to shame. This location does offer takeout now, which is better than sitting inside and wasting your money on poor service. The waiters constantly avoided my table, left dirty plates on cluttered on my table while eating my entree. This place really needs to improve their staff. My husband and I dined here for our anniversary on Saturday. We were excited about trying this place because the reviews were so excellent. The ambience is romantic and quiet which was perfect for a nice romantic dinner. We started off with the steak roll appetizer which was served piping hot and very flavorful and delicious. We also ordered a bottle of Riesling which was also delicious. Next up were the entrees. I ordered the salmon with the mac and cheese and my husband ordered the steak frites. The entrees were bland ,very disappointing. They meat had no flavor whatsoever. The mac and cheese was oddly sweet and had a very strong onion flavor which was not at all appetizing. We are very surprised by the entrees. To finish we ordered the carrot cake and that was by far the best carrot cake I have ever had. It was served warm and they give you a pretty hefty slice for the price. We accompanied the cake with some coffee to finish our meal. The service was quick and efficient. Our server, I believe her name was Melissa was very attentive and excellent. Overall it was a good experience but what held back and higher rating were the entrees. We usually know what we want before we come in, which is one or two orders of steak rolls (a must), and my brothers order the shrimp with fries and Mac n cheese. I vary between the above combo but instead of Mac n cheese the creamed spinach. Or if I'm feeling good about that day the crab cakes are amazing! My husband and I love J. Alexander's! Last night we made a reservation for 8:15, when we arrived we asked for a booth which we got on time. We had a terrific waitress Jacquie. I highly recommend having her host your dining experience, she was authentically pleasant. Our meal was perfectly timed and delicious. Cypress Salad and Ribs were top notch. Also we can't go without the Philly Steak Eggrolls, yum! I was also delighted they carry my favorite wine by Elizabeth Spencer! Very rare to find this on a wine list anywhere! The table across from us was complaining to the manager for about 10 minutes during our meal which we thought was absolutely bizarre. How could you have a poor dining experience in such a beautiful, vibrant yet relaxed ambience with amazing service and food? This was my first time coming to this bar and the host was amazing and very attentive. Once seated at the bar the bartenders took very good care of us. I ordered the medium rare slow roasted prime rib with the macaroni and cheese and steam broccoli. "Don't tell Dad, but these are the best ribs I've ever had!" This is what my sister said to me after she destroyed the avocado bomb. I loved her fries, they are a lot like steak and shake fries. My husband says the crab cakes were "perfection" and I enjoyed my chicken very much. We couldn't help but eat off of each other's plates just wanting to try everything. My drink had a real flower in it and by the time I finished it I was buzzed. This place took me by such a surprise! I had never heard of this franchise before so I thought it was one of those local Low-grade neighborhood sports bars. It most definitely isn't. The interior is beautiful, classy, rich. The bar is gorgeous. Their service and food is excellent. Our server was great! Very professional and attentive. Our glasses stayed full. I went last month with some girlfriends, and we loved it. We got pear martinis and the steak frites with a side of the Mac and cheese. The pear martinis were something else. They are strong! Too sweet for me but they use grey goose so you definitely get your money's worth! I was impressed (and very tipsy). The proportions are huge too. I love that their fries are long, skinny and hot! Went here for dinner while visiting Raleigh recently. Food was good and atmosphere was nice. Server was polite and chatty. The next day I was notified by my credit card company that there was fraud on my account. Since I had not used my credit card for several days, and it had not been out of my sight for more than a month, I am left to the conclusion that the number was stolen at this restaurant. This sort of thing would never happen if more restaurants would adopt the European policy of bringing the card reader to the table so the card stays in your possession. The deviled egg appetizer, 2 cocktails and 2 prime rib dinners ended up being less than $100. The second time I visited J. Alexander's was on a Saturday night. I made my reservation the same day and we ended up with probably the second worse table in the joint. That was my own fault... I should have reserved a table sooner. When we were seated it was unclear who our waitress was because 3 different ladies popped over within 5 minutes. You'd think we would at least have napkins and silverware at the table. Nope (and we didn't get any until after our appetizers arrived). The wait staff seemed to struggle this evening, but in their defense, it was Saturday and they were packed. We started our meal with the steak rolls (his choice) and the crunchy shrimp roll (my choice). Both were delicious, but I was shocked at how good the the shrimp roll was. We ordered a bottle of Girard Old Vine Zinfandel ($40) instead of cocktails and I wish we hadn't. It wasn't great. Glancing over at the other tables, the lemon drop martini seemed popular. I'll have one when I go back to explore more of their sushi menu. The beaux and I both ordered the NY Strip with the Mac and cheese. Both were cooked to our liking but they lacked flavor. We know choices are limited these days but we ordered what we usually do and still in the menu. Server hesitate to change items saying "that side doesn't come with that plate" on my NY strip steak, maybe they don't understand the difference between cut and slice. I like medium well but sliced to cook the center a little more, I don't like chunky, they only cut it in half, when they saw my reaction offered to slice it like I wanted, if you knew why didn't do it like I said the first time? Love J. Alexanders! Tried this place for the first time through a Yelp Elite event and it was fantastic!! Decided to take my fiancé there a week ago and it still did not disappoint. I ordered the steak Maui with mac and cheese. Let me say, the mac and cheese is EXCELLENT. Steak Maui was great but would only recommend if you like a sweet taste to your meats as it's marinated in some kind of fruit juice. My fiancé got the grilled salmon and mashed potatoes, and let me tell you, the mashed potatoes were EXCELLENT. Salmon was ok. Nothing extraordinary. Took the wife here for lunch. She works right off Glenwood, and J. Alexander's offers a private parking lot, so much more convenient than fighting the mall traffic. We both ordered off the chef's special menu. I grabbed a salad, and she grabbed sushi. Even though it's a 'steak place,' we both really enjoyed our meals. Might be a nice place for a date night - they are going for a 'classy' vibe - tons of glass, wood, and stone. They pulled it off quite nicely I think.
