Disappointing experience tonight. I mean this in all honesty - this place is starting to slip. Someone needs to catch it before it dives into a free fall. I have loved this place for years. So what is wrong? The restaurant appears to be cutting items from the menu and making sub standard replacements. Maybe I'm just unlucky and only my favorite things were targeted, but here's what we noticed just tonight was missing: The Kobe beef burger is gone The deviled eggs are gone The AMAZING salsa that came with the queso dip (I used to buy bottles of it off the restaurant) has been replaced with a really mediocre pico de gallo ALL craft beer (maybe even all beer) is gone The cheesecake is gone The seasonal specials menu is gone (though a couple items from it are now on the permanent menu) In addition, the meals our table received did not seem like the same quality as in the past: The salads had less cheese The new York strip was fairly bland The Cole slaw was dry And the Manhattan Martini we ordered was absolutely horrible - almost unpalatable This was a birthday visit by the way, so this was all rather disappointing. And it's part of a trend that seems to have started in late 2019 or early 2020. The rattlesnake pasta has been undercooked on a couple of occasions during that time, for example, and the menu changes started around then. I don't know if the restaurant is making cutbacks due to a rough covid year, but this place used to be the best in town. Now I am not sure it makes the top ten...which for Toledo is saying quite a lot (our restaurants suck). Please work on this J. Thanks for many good years. read more

After a not so great experience on 3/31, the Manager contacted me and assured me that steps had been taken to make sure our next dining experience at J's would be great and that the issues were taken care of. I'll be giving J's another try in the near future. read more

Very clean. The staff was very attentive. Expensive lunch menu is all I have to say. 65 bucks without tip for a burger, small salmon lunch entree and two ice teas. Kinda steep in my opinion. I am one that does 2-3 business lunches a week normally and this was a shocker. read more

This is my third visit in three different states. It seems I am a fan of this large Corporate chain. I've had the steak and frites, roasted chicken, fish sandwich, Caesar salad, deviled eggs, and carrot cake desert. Each location prepared each item to the corporate standards. Especially good were the deviled eggs. Drinks are a good pour and wine selection by the glass were plentiful. Service is attentive. The restrooms are well tended to, thanks for that. This location is very busy at the dinner hour. We are fans because they deliver what is expected. read more

Hands down the best steak I had so far in Toledo. It's right behind Ruth's Chris in quality when it comes to steak. Ordered myself a New York Strip that comes with a side of yummy Caesar salad and their AMAZING Not Your Ordinary(NYO) mac n cheese. The steak was perfect! It was thick and juicy. It's one of those steaks you don't need A1 or any other sauce to eat it with. As for the mac n cheese, a friend recommended it and it blew my mind away on how good it was. I'm usually the guy who stay aways from mac n cheese but theirs got me wanting it more and more. This place is definitely one of the nicer ones in town. It's elegant and the cost is a bit more than your average joe. In the end, you'll end up spending more but the service you'll get is outstanding and the food is freaking delicious so you'll get your money's worth. I will be back. read more

I've been going there since it opened but never again! The cooks did not have mask on and were eating while cooking and setting the plates to be delivered. Waiter was totally untrained. It took him 15 minutes to get to our table. Ordered drinks and that was another 15 minutes to get. Ordered our food for dine in and it came out as to go. When I mentioned it to another waiter he initially suggested that we just eat it out of the to go box then offered to get plates. When our waiter stopped by he blamed the kitchen even though you could clearly see on the receipt the order was rang in as a to go. He did try to make it right by offering a dessert but after 20 minutes of being ignored we left. Looked for a manager as we were leaving but none were around. I will be happy to spend $130 for 2 people's dinner else were! read more

I have been coming to this place for over 20 years. I really hate to give this review, but hopefully things change....I will go back, but not anytime soon. First I know there is inflation, but prices have risen on the food to a level I am not quite comfortable with yet...other restaurants in the area have not raised their prices as much as "J" has recently. As for our experience, our server was new to serving and drink service was slow. We received drink before the salads arrived, one after the salads arrived, and another after we were done with the salads. I looked over at the bar and there were only a few patrons at the bar with 2 bartenders so I am not sure what the excuse was.... As for the food, I love their cilantro shrimp, Cajun chicken(rattlesnake) pasta, and Maui steak. Tonight's meal just didnt live up to the standards. The steak was cut thinner than I am used to and it tasted like they didn't clean the wood fire grill very well from what they were cooking before my steak went on. The mac and cheese was good, but the coleslaw(which we usually love) was almost inedible. Maybe it is just a bad night, or maybe they cant find anyone that wants to make money....not sure? read more

We had waited for a while and made our way to the bar. After waiting at the bar and ordering drinks we stood off to the side and a gentleman eventually made his way to the bar and asked for another chair for his wife. The bartender told them they don't have any other chairs but they decided to stay and order food. Another couple was leaving and gave us their chairs since WE had been standing waiting longer than this guy coming up and popping up there to get a seat. Maddison who was the bartender made it known that we were "rude" for not giving the chairs to the guy who basically was just trying to cut the dinner line and to sit at the bar and eat even tho we checked in way before them. It will be a very long time before we go back. Her behavior was very childish. When my husband got up to get our table she started to eye the customer to tell him there was a free bar chair. I plan on calling corporate Monday, more training needs to be done on her part. I'm assuming the way she acted that she knew the people but it was sickening how she made her comments and behaved. read more

The food is excellent, but ordering takeout is a hassle. We ordered for our office and gave our office phone number. They apparently need a cell phone for the pickup, the staff never told us this. We wanted to pay over the phone but after 10mins of explaining this we were told we couldn't do this but could pay with the text on our order. It took us 25min to get this al straighten out. The food and service was amazing. You do not need to dress to the 9's to come here but you can. We started with salads that were amazing because they had bacon on them!!!! Then we each had beef. One filet and one prime both perfect. Each paired with Mac n cheese that was absolutely southern recipe good. We had a Diet Coke and our bill was $75 - and well worth it. read more

Always a good experience. I love the salads and last night had the Alex salad with a delicious piece of grilled salmon. Deviled eggs are awesome and you HAVE to have a piece of carrot cake. Worse was the service. Our server acted like we were an inconvenience. After she spilled water on me, she didn't come back to the table. She sent one of her co workers to pick up our check. I have only been here a few times but they have never let me down in any way! The food is delicious, service is quick and polite, and the restaurant is always packed, yet intimate. Great atmosphere, great service , great waiter. My nephew and I each ordered the prime rib. His was cooked to perfection and mine was uneatable. Just a bad cut poorly cooked. Our waiter was a real pro and apologized and the manager removed it from our bill. Nephews was perfect in every way so go figure. Everything else was first class. I have eaten in many of the J Alexanders throughout Ohio and never had an issue so I'm sure this was just an unfortunate odd incident. I would eat here again. I was pleasantly surprised by J Alexander's they serve really good food and the service is top notch I ordered the blackened salmon and it was seasoned perfectly and moist it was delicious my wife had modified salad which they kindly accommodated with fresh ingredients. Normally have a very good experience at this restaurant, but tonight was off. I ordered dessert to go and waited 50 minutes after paying before I finally got it. No one stopped by to tell me that there was going to be a wait. I asked about how long it would take and was told that they were making fresh carrot cake. 30 minutes later I asked again and the manager said he would come to my table. The manager did not come but someone brought out the carrot cake, but didn't acknowledge the wait or apologize. I'm very disappointed that no one ever explained the situation or apologized for the wait. read more

Update below....I have not been to J. Alexander's in years. They have removed the warm delicious croissants and replaced them with nothing. My daughter had a French dip and the prime rib was delicious. It melted in your mouth. The french fries were appropriately seasoned. My Alex salad arrived first and it looked like a piece of art! The even took the time to arrange the warm croutons around the outside of the salad. After the salad the Hyde Park chicken sandwich arrived with a hair, mayonnaise and an onion on it. The menu stated it would have lettuce and tomato. The bill arrived WITHOUT a discount. The service was horrible. Many times I needed to take a drink from my daughter's pop. I won't be back. Update...the management gave me a $15 Be My Guest coupon to return and I did. To be fair I ordered the Hyde Park, the same way. The sandwich again arrived with mayo. I asked for a manager and it was quickly fixed. The sandwich was moist and delicious. The fried were perfectly seasoned. The waitress was a complete turn around from the one I had before! I have been trying to get take out a few times a week to help restaurants during the closures of the coronavirus. I did take out a few weeks ago for Jalexanders. The messed up my order and put mayo on when I asked no mayo. I had to throw the bun away. I thought I would give them another chance. I called to day from work, and when asked for a take out order I was told we open at 12pm. I asked if I could leave my order as I would pick up at noon. She replied well I'm getting this set up. I hung up. I have a lunch hour 12 to 1230. They need to train there staff better. read more

I can't decide if I would give this place a 3 or 4 stars. But I went with 4 because I do find myself here every so often when i Don't know what else to eat. I've been coming to j. Alex for a long long time. And I used to love it back then. But more so within the last few years it's been a hit or miss. Some days it's good and some days it's just ok. When it's good. They are good. My strip steak gets cooked the perfect medium rare, more on the rare side is how I like it. The NYO Mac and cheese is spot on. Their loaded smashed potatoes is phenomenal. But when they are off, they are off. The last few times it was either I had to send my steak back because it was medium well, and I just can't get myself to stomach dry meat. And/or the food is really greasy and doesn't sit well. Their cypress salad is bomb. And I love it with extra cornbread croutons and their honey mustard and champagne vinaigrette dressing is delish!!! Ohh.. and their ranch dressing is amazing as well. read more
