Boy, look at that review down there! To save you some time reading it, ask yourself these questions: * Are you trying to eat vegetarian, or just eating healthy in general? * Do you get annoyed with small menus? * Do you go out of your way to eat food that tastes a cut above the rest? * Are you not willing to spend at least twenty dollars for something that you may end up regretting? If you've answered 'yes' to any of these, skip this restaurant. For as expensive as it is, shouldn't it have a solid 5 star rating anyway? I've been to J Alexander's a handful of times for business. If I were to rate the restaurant solely on service and atmosphere, I would undoubtedly give it five stars. The service has always been excellent in my experiences and the atmosphere is well put together. The parking lot is normally full of expensive cars and the customers are usually in suits. It's one of those places you take someone to impress them, if whomever you're trying to impress isn't all about small details like 'taste' or 'choices'. So here I am, the type of guy who considers value before I buy it. Well the fortunate part for me is that I've never paid to eat at J Alexander's, but if you're one who's into choices and taste-to-dollar ratios, you'd be better off checking out someplace else. Lets start with the menu. Have you been to a Denny's or a Big Boy? You open the menu and see a plethora of choices, along with some enticing pictures. You know what you don't like and that everything else probably isn't such a bad idea. At J Alexander's, you have the choice between this type of meat, cooked only this way, that type of meat cooked only that way, a salad or two, and ... more meat. The menu is only about 25 items long, while nothing screams "eat me". The descriptions of the food are a few words short of recipes, because they're just ingredients, and in no way enticing. The prices are amusingly high for what is being sold. Trying to eat healthy? They have salads ... and water. If restaurants had souls, this one would be atheist. There's no passion here whatsoever when it comes to food. Oh, but a vegetarian item, the veggie burger! The burger was too large for the bun, overbearingly salty, contained some sort of faint burnt taste, and fell apart as I ate it. It literally fell into pieces from each bite, and I was left with a plate full of what looked like beans and random protein. And at $15? I've bought a whole pack of 'good' veggie burgers for a quarter of the price at Meijer. If you don't get anything else out of this review, just don't get the veggie burger. This was by far the worst burger I've ever ordered in my life. Oh sure, I've had their other random real meat items, but nothing else has ever stood out as "good", or better yet, "worth my money". I've had better food at a coney island. Some people like the fries here. Me? I prefer not having to awkwardly grasp 5 fries at the same time while dipping them into a tiny bowl of ketchup. Maybe you're supposed to eat them with a fork? The fries are annoyingly small and a bit oily. They're alright, but such a pain to eat. And to all of you corporate people driving luxury cars and wearing fancy suits, try something 'good' for a change. Go get some Thai, chili cheese fries, a decent pizza ... something, anything else! Stop going here for a few months and save yourself enough money to buy yourself a nice new Rolex, or throw some more cash toward your portfolio. The bottom line? I've eaten at expensive restaurants before with superb quality, and this isn't one of them. Go here if you're rich and like wasting money. My apologies to those who genuinely like this restaurant, but this just isn't my thing. Give me a coney dog and I'll gladly keep the rest of those big bills in my wallet. read more

Haven't been here in a couple years. Won't be back. Made a call to be sure that they were open and the person that answered the phone was very rude and just hung up as I was saying thank you. Get to the restaurant and the ladies at the hostess stand were all just standing around nobody acknowledged us or even said hello. The server was OK but not great. The food left much to be desired. $90 bucks for lunch for 2. Also the menu there's nothing like it used to be it's been scaled way back... J Alexander's is a great restaurant, but the service lately has been horrible. I'm a frequent J Alexander's customer. ( if you couldn't already tell from my pictures.) The service at J's has been disturbing. Within the past 6 months the service has been getting worse and worse. I usually don't have to send back my food to make it hot, or find a piece of eyelash hair in my food (multiple times) - without receiving an apology or deducted from the bill. *At least a decent apology without being rude to me about ME finding a piece of YOUR hair.* I sent back my potato 3 times today because they didn't get it right. The waiter should've made sure it came out right the 2nd time he brought it out.... Oh... & their frier has been broken for over two weeks...?? I'm confused as to why it wasn't fixed right away. I ordered a carrot cake today with a side of ice cream for 3 people -as usual. When a server came to bring plates and silverware she brought 2 spoons and a fork... 1 large dirty spoon, 1 small soon, and 1 fork. I asked the waiter to decide which person should get which and he had this clueless look on his face. -I will post a picture of the spoon Management needs to train their staff better.. It's ridiculous. I received a text today from my friend Corbin saying "You love J Alexander's, you're always there. It's great but shitty service." I'm not the only one whose been thinking this lately. I'm so upset that I have to write a review about J's like this. Went for lunch a month or so ago and ordered one of their asian entree salads. It was good. Not mind-blowing, but good. Went back for a drink and a couple appetizers to share a few days ago. Ordered the special of "Heirloom Tomatoes." I've had heirloom tomatoes plenty of times. Always sliced thin. Always delicious. You really cant screw them up. Somehow, they screwed them up. First, there was no way to actually confirm that they were indeed "heirloom" tomatoes as they were bright red throughout and cut into wedges. Strange. They tasted like they had been sitting in the fridge for awhile. Dont ever refridgerate tomatoes. Splash of olive oil, limited salt and pepper all sitting on a 5 day old sliced piece of "garlic bread" that was stale as a board. Calimari was served with a forgettable marinara sauce that is probably re-used on 4 other dishes. I probably wouldnt be this harsh if this restaurant wasnt so preposterously expensive. I actually took the time to look at the menu recently. Wow. Insane. 30 dollars for an average entree at a chain restaurant?? It's one thing if the food was unique or incredibly tasty but from my vantage point it looks like their trying to payback their remodeling jobs through gouging us on Applebees style food with Bacco style prices. Waitress also came by about once every 90 seconds. Eventually I had to ask her to leave us alone. Don't think 'd be back even if they cut their prices in half. read more

I was in the area for work for a few days and requested dinner and lunch suggestions from my client. This place came highly recommended. Initially when I looked at them menu I wasn't excited because it seemed typical and not unique......but then I ordered!!!!!!! What can I say? I am a sucker for J's! I have been here countless times and have tried literally everything on the menu and I promise you EVERYTHING is good. The restaurant is pretty spacious and has an excellent ambiance. Everyone there is very polite and are very accommodating. To start, I usually get their calamari or their Queso dip which always hits the spot. If you are an artichoke lover and they have their grilled artichokes on special.. GET IT! They are so delicious and so properly prepared. I usually get a steak Maui as my meal when I am in the mood for meat. I could honestly say that the steak Maui is by far the best steak I have ever had from any restaurant and I have tried many. If I'm in the mood for chicken, I will usually make my own meal which is not on the menu. I would get two grilled chicken breasts with two sides. Their sides are just as amazing as the meals. Their Mac and Cheese is always on point and their smashed potatoes are unlike any other. If you are near a J Alexanders then I would definitely recommend it. J. Alexander's is a very comfortable place with some good bartenders. Drink prices are on the high side, but when you have VO as your "well" whisky - Should I expect less? I was disappointed that their ventilation system is not conducive to a puro purist. But still a nice place to court a sexy lady with the space and the quiet time to enjoy each other. I'll give this place a 4 star for the atmosphere but knock it down for the drink prices to a 3. I do not need VO when mixing! read more

I'm always satisfied when I leave J. Alexanders. There was a point in time when my sister and I were becoming obsessed with their food. Regardless of what you order, you can't go wrong. They have so many options of anything you could want. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a chicken finger platter with french fries, delicious. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a healthy salad, or just a big helping of mashed potatoes. No matter what, the food is always consistent, cooked through and hot (if a hot dish was ordered). They have been changing the menu quite a bit over the last year and a half, so the same items that I love may not be on it... they're usually very accommodating and will be able to make whatever it is I request... it depends on the server. The price point is extremely high.. the chicken finger platter with fries is something like $19. It's amazing though, so I don't bawk at it, if I'm in the mood for it... they're really the best chicken fingers around. The Thai Kai salad is phenomenal, the ahi tuna salad is great as well... my real comfort food there, the french dip sandwich! Oh Yum! Another thing I really like, they have a list of daily specials that constantly changes. The specials are awesome... especially the shredded cabbage something or other (when they have it).. it rocks. The servers are generally nice, and pretty attentive. There's always a wait on the weekends, so make sure you call ahead and get your name on the list. read more

Lucky me! Last week-accompanied by two very good-looking men-I tried this place for the first time. My cousin (okay, so it wasn't a date!) was surprised that I'd never tried the place, since it's one of his favorites. Surprisingly, this place had the ditziest hostesses I've ever encountered. Although friendly, they were quite addled for being the ones in charge of seating. When we first arrived, I wanted to know if my cousin was there yet. They couldn't find his name on the list and didn't remember his imposing six-foot-five frame coming through the door. No biggie...except that when I texted him to find out where he was, he was right behind me, at the bar. Speaking of bars, it was standing-room-only. It looked like a "sit and stay" sort of bar, where unaccompanied women might last only a couple minutes before being approached (since I was there with my cousin and fiance, I did not try this . . . but you should and let other Yelpers know). Once seated, we ordered appetizers of artichoke dip and calamari, both of which came quickly and were delicious. I ordered the Thai Salad. It was "meh" and had too much chicken. I know, no one ever says that, but I was in a salad mood and would never have dreamed that it would have that much meat on it . . . I realize that for most, this would be a good thing. My fiance ordered the French dip, which was too rare for his tastes, but otherwise good. Dessert for us was the Key Lime Pie. It was delish! This place was a tad pricey--not for the area, but overall. You'll like the ambiance and the menu had a lot of variety, but be ready to pay for it. read more

I am obsessed with their Thai Kai Salad! OMG the best salad I have ever had in my whole life. BUT ask for GRILLED chicken instead of the original chicken that comes with the salad ( deli meat style) and if they charge you a couple bucks extra believe me its soooo worth it! And this is a meal on its own. Its huge. Believe me, you wont want to eat anything else but this yummy salad. Their Chicken finger basket....delectable but oh so fattening! Their Key Lime Pie is Heaven and you never feel guilty for eating it because it is so light and fluffy. And I have learned with this pie....you just cant share. Its just wrong to share a pie oh so yummy! I would have to say that the Rotisserie Chicken does lack seasoning and well, I wouldnt order it ever again. I mean it wasnt that bad, but it wasnt that great to say "ooh I want the Rotisserie Chicken again" LOL They have their Rosemary Filet (usually a special) ok, so I am not a huge red meat eater....BUT omg.....Deee Liciouso! hmmm, lets see what else..... Grilled Artichoke...YUM. Grilled Asparagus....ick. Way to salty. and well, I would pick the artichoke over the asparagus any day. The carrot cake is yummo....if thats the only thing you plan on eating for the whole day. Its super rich and super fattening. THIS is def a "sharing" kind of dessert. Horrible customer service. First they failed to give me a menu and the waiter shows up 2 mins after I sat down asking me if I knew what I wanted! Never asked me if i wanted a beverage. Then comes back like 15 mins later after i get a menu, takes my order and I kindly ask for a beer. Never brings me the beer and someone else brought me my dinner out without my beer like 20 mins later. Then I tell the girl I never got my beer and she says "oh, you're not paying for that" and brings me the beer. The waiter finally shows up once more with my bill with the beer on it. Lol. I just paid it and wanted to be done with this joke of a restaurant. I got the $45 rib eye and it tasted like bbq sauce. Ruined. You don't cook a ribeye with bbq sauce. Salt and pepper seared always is how you do it. He should be fired for being a rude dumb ass. read more

There's a reason I don't frequent J's anymore. I usually grab a seat @the bar (great service there) decided to grab a table. The wait was 1 hour 20 minutes, after being told the wait would be around 1/2 hour! Pager finally goes off...mass confusion between the 3 hostesses standing @the desk erupts.! Not one person apologized for the wait, or confusion. Once seated, the booth seats are so worn and low, which meant the label was so high...it felt like I was resting my arms on the roof of a car. The waitress took our drink orders, put a small menu on top of our main menus and said, "Let me know if you are are interested in any of our specials"....wow!!! That's how it's done @J's now? I'm not a fan. It was so late when we were finally seated, my daughter and I decided to share a meal. We were told that there would be a $5-$6 up charge to split the meal in the kitchen, so she would just bring us an extra plate! I wanted to give 3 stars because of the service at this location, but the food is always excellent at any Js. Came here the other night and the apps, salads, fries, dessert, and tea were amazing! First time having tea here and I was amazed by the presentation! My only hesitation is I don't think staff was trained correctly - at least our server wasn't. She continued to remove plates from our table although there was still food in them and we were clearly still eating from them. Why would we request an order of something and not want to finish it? I was out in Farmington Hills, MI on a business trip....not for vacation, that's for sure. The CIO and one of his managers of the office I was visiting brought me here for a business lunch. Stepping in to J Alexander's reminded me a lot like a Houton's back home in LA. This restaurant is a favorite of the CIO. He suggested the salmon special with herbed butter, and substituting couscous instead of the cold orzo salad which came with it. That sounded great, so I went with his suggestion. The salmon was cooked perfectly, and the herbed butter was served on the side. The salmon was fresh tasting and moist. It wasn't overcooked. It was great. The couscous complimented the salmon perfectly. I was very pleased with my lunch choice. Service was great and attentive. Our server made sure I had plenty of iced tea. I can see why this place is a great place for a business lunch. Business trip went well, considering the location and weather. read more

The service is fabulous, the timing on the app to the entree is great. i am SO excited that the BBQ ribs are back on the menu!! they are theleaner type where the meat falls off the bone, finger licking delicious. their fries are crisp and skinny - or you can opt out and get a baked potato with the ribs... or vegetable of the day for the skinny mini's. i love the grilled artichoke app. their famous jack chicken fingers are also back on the menu!! i also enjoy the thai kai chicken salad -- it is one of your typical asian salads, the dressing may be a bit heavy from time to time. there is a LOT of chicken with the salad, almost more than the lettuce. great restaurant if you are with a group of 4 people. its a very loud atmosphere, a little bit on the darker side of ambiance. this location has outdoor seating, which is nice. there is also a front full bar area that is separate from the main dining area ps. if you stand over by the grill , sometimes the chefs will give you free fries while you are waiting. read more

This is an upper scale chain restaurant that doesn't feel like a chain restaurant. I like their style and approach to the atmosphere and ambeyonus of the restaurant, with the open grill and warm feel. I typically go for a business lunch, and usually order the taco special of the day. I like their fish tacos. But they have a good selection on their menu, with daily specials. It feels like they tend to me more American southern in the menu. But the options are always fresh and meals are generous. The key lime pie is also very good. read more

This was my first time at this restaurant chain. I had a New York Strip topped with Bleu Cheese, which is not on the menu. It was very good. I also had the green beans and wish I would have opted to tackle the over sized broccoli I spotted coming in. My date's potatoes were not bad. I really enjoyed the jazzy ambience and the crowd was attractive. Main dishes seemed expensive, but they had small plates on the menu as well as fair priced salads. I have had the pleasure of eating here twice within the last year. The first time was for a birthday dinner and I ordered the steak frites. It was good and well prepared. Pretty much exactly what I expected. The steak was cooked perfectly to order and the fries were thin, crunchy and well seasoned. The second time I ate here, I decided to venture out of the steaks section and try their halibut with a lemon cream sauce. I am so glad I decided to try something new because the fish was spectacular. Light, flaky and complimented perfectly by the sauce; the fish was truly a treat. They suggested cole slaw with the dish, but instead I chose sweet corn and found the combination to be perfect. After enjoying the spectacular main course, I ordered a piece of key lime pie and was presented with a slab of tangy, rich, almost cream-cheesy deliciousness covered in thick, real whipped cream. The service was a little disjointed on my second visit. The different servers brought us our different courses and it would have been nice to have continuity throughout the service. Also, our water carafe needed filled a few times and it would have been nice not to have to flag someone down for a fresh one. I have dined at this place so many times and have never done a review. This is really the only "chain" restaurant my boyfriend and I patron and enjoy. This place is really consistent which makes it an easy decision. For appetizer I highly recommend the smoked salmon and for an entree the specials will always provide something quite yummy. I will say the prices are a bit high but for consistency we role with it. The wine list is really vast with good options. We usually sit in the bar area of this location and the service is generally pretty good. So when you are wrapping up your shopping on Orchard Lake and are heading toward 696 thinking "Man, I could go for a nosh before heading home." Stop in- you will find something delicious and a glass of something appropriate to wash it down. read more

I do not know what happened! I used to love this place and it has totally gone downhill in the last year or so! I ordered a salad with my meal came incorrect I send it back. So I took one bite of the replacement salad and went to go use the restroom came back and but there's food, are they trying to rush for some reason I know they didn't need the seating because the restaurant was practically empty. The steak resembled spam! The fries were good however, trying to keep a positive. I've had better steaks from the dollar store! I hope someone a power reads this and changes what ever they changed to make him terrible because I will not return! read more

I don't go to J.Alexander's very often. We went here to meet friends. I really like the interior and the ambience here. We had no problem getting a seat. Staff was great and always on top of their service. I had the Fire Roasted Artichokes. Oh man....soooooo good! I love them. The fire roasted flavor stays with you for awhile thouhh. I had the Thai Kai Salad, which was pretty good. Nothing spectacular I definitely prefer this location over the Somerset location. read more

I absolutely love J. Alexander's. I always have loved this place. I am yet to be disappointed after all these years. The ambiance in every location I've been to is almost the same, and I like it. I'm a fan of their use of wood, stone, and dark colors in the inside. I'm an even bigger fan of the menu. There are so many things on the many I enjoy. The menu itself is quite versatile. Their appetizers, sandwiches, and salads are all fairly reasonably priced. Their entrees are price, but high in quality. So you can go there for an affordable, delicious meal. Just because you pay less for salads and sandwiches does not mean they aren't high quality fare as well. My favorite is the chicken salad sandwich or Alex's salad or the Ahi tuna. But I've gone there and happily ordered the filet and splurged on a more "upscale" sort of meal. This restaurant just satisfies any expectation or desire. In addition, they have delicious sides, a full bar with some good martinis, and an extensive wine list. Not to mention an impressive dessert menu to finish off your night. Made a reservation for two at 7:30pm on a Wednesday. It wasn't overly busy but it was probably a good thing that we had the reservations. When I spoke to the hostess on the phone she said they only take reservations for parties of four or less and call aheads for parties of five or more, something to keep in mind. The Lucky Star Cabernet wine was very good and so were the crab cakes and mac n' cheese. The crab cakes are small and you think they aren't going to be very filling but they are filled with crab and really do fill you up; I ended up taking the second one home. The sauce on the crab cakes was amazing, spicy but very delicious! The Mac n' cheese was very creamy and baked to perfection, also took some of the mac n' cheese home. The place isn't super fancy but it's but casual, it's someplace in the middle. You can get away with dressing up and not feel out of place. Overall we had a wonderful evening. read more

The staff all seemed very energetic and seemed to be happy doing their job. My server Brandon also answered all my questions happily and did a very good job of taking care of me. I have wanted to try this restaurant for the longest time. I was told that their artichokes are amazing. So we went last night. What a disappointment. First they didn't have the artichokes so that was upsetting. The waitress was very sweet, but should probably be doing something other then serving tables. The service was horrendous. I have never experienced such bad service in my life. She never came around the table. When we asked are something she came back. The food was cold, we had to send it back. And it took forever to come back. She didn't serve bread. I asked for it when we were almost finished. The cocktails took forever and the restaurant wasn't ever busy.The napkins were making me gag. The all smelled like a deep fryer. I have a great sense of smell and it was awful. I had to get the napkins off the table. I might try to get a carryout one day, just to try the artichokes. At one time this was my favorite go to place in the area. This last time I went I had a horrible experience. The service was not good at all. The server did not pay attention to my table. I ordered the Alexander salad and I was disappointed in the salad mix. They had the best salad in the past and then they changed mix. I ordered food to go and it was over cooked and was to up to the Alexander's standards. The topper was it made me sick to my stomach. Where to start? I guess from the begining. I love you J alexanders. You were my first exp once on a 1st date. It's been 12 years. since that date. Ihave went to your location on orchard lake atleast 100 times and your one in the mall 10-12. This was for a year my go to place for lunch because my job was a mile down the road. LOVED that job because i was able to eat and J's several times a week. I have tasted nearly everything you have ever had to offer & I think once I was not happy, but that was because the person clearing dishes as you eat took my fave fave thing you serve and never boxed it for me take home. This would infact be your spinn dipp...omg, it is the best spin dip. Thinking about it my mouth is watering. To date my fave three things are: steak maui, anything ahi tuna, & your alex salad..I do order my alex salad with field greens thoe. ALL your dressings are great..and on any salad really you offer. I love to mix your GRADE A balsamic Vin & olive oil just by itself on your what shoudl be award winning salads. When it comes to sides- i love when the seasons change..with that a whole new menu- because ordering a few sides for a little woman like me is all I need really. I recommend that anyone mix up their sauces or dips..once I ordered the ahi tuna colled with the steak maui sauce..& another I asked for the salsa to be added to the spin dip before it was cooked. Did i mention the field greens on the alex salad? Once I had to have my steak recooked as it was well done and i like my steak rare to med rare. To be honest- the well done was actually delicious. So I am not even listing that as a time to even complain about. All the above i recomend. Along with the baked potato- SOUP- & DO NOT forget your butter honey crossaunt if they have it. If that is even how you spell that. DOWNSIDE? you have to wait at dinner for a seat usually..do yourself a favor arive an hour earlier thn you want to eat..& bring a book or go window shop in the shopping center behind it..or if you have several guest make a reservation. WELL WORTH IT. The menu is pricey. but NOT for good service..and quality food. This place doesnt taste cheap. But its not your $90 Michael jordans steak either. Sorry but apple bees can't be compared to this place. But its not apple bees quality. Expect to pay $25+ for a steak..$10 for a gigantic salad enough for the normal eating woman. I take myself and two kids and they each order a kids meal (which are delicious and nice sized) or a couple sides or soup- and we all split the alex salad, which they are happy to split for you. Service was prompt and very accommodating, nice ambiance if not a tad "cookie cutter-esque" Prime steak and salmon (something or the other) was the order and the steak was cooked to perfection. I've been to J. Alexander's several times and several different locations in the area. The service is always excellent, and the restaurant has always been full when I've been there but I've never had to wait to be seated. The calamari, rattlesnake pasta, chicken tenders, and carrot cake are my favorites. We've also tried the Tuscan steak, Prime rib, Gumbo soup, Not Your Ordinary Mac N Cheese, and Smashed potatoes. These were all ok but I don't have to have them again. This is a great restaurant and a nice go to for a dinner date. read more
