I opted for the Victor Special, extra cut, which included larger portions of both corned beef and pastrami, coleslaw, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing. The thinly-sliced meat was indeed piled high at the center. For my side, I had wanted the onion rings, but they were already sold out! Instead, I went with the hash browns; they were crispy with a mashed potato-like interior. In retrospect, I should have tried some of the foods I've enjoyed from my hometown: knishes, blintzes, latkes; I'm now dreaming of meals I've had in my past. Service was fine at first, but my server got busy elsewhere, and her coworkers pitched in.

On Saturday, September 27, I dined at J. Alexander's in West Bloomfield and experienced a deeply concerning incident regarding food safety and customer service. While seated, I observed a server carrying carryout containers to the patio. As the server approached the patio door, the containers dropped to the ground. Both the server and a busboy clearly saw that the containers had fallen onto the dirty floor, yet they proceeded to hand them directly to the customer without replacing them. Upon the server's return inside, I stopped her and explained that I--and several other patrons--had witnessed this unhygienic and unacceptable act. Her only response was, "Oh." Shortly afterward, she appeared to inform the manager, Erin, of my comment. Despite this, no corrective action was taken, and the customer was never offered a clean replacement. I then requested to speak directly with the manager, Erin, who acknowledged she was aware of the situation and stated she would address it. However, she had to ask me which table was involved, and even after another fifteen minutes passed, no replacement meal or containers were ever provided to the guest. I am in disbelief that such a practice occurred in your establishment and am even more concerned that no immediate steps were taken to correct it once brought to staff attention. This type of disregard for hygiene and customer well-being is unacceptable, especially in a restaurant of J. Alexander's reputation. I really prefer restaurants with individuality over chains, but this place is really good. I've eaten here both at dinner and lunch several times, there is always a buzz of good atmosphere and the food is fantastic. Tried their fish sandwich for lunch - WOW, it was incredible. It is going to be a difficult thing to choose anything else off the menu after experiencing that. The staff are attentive, polite, professional. Food arrived within ten to fifteen minutes of ordering, which often would cause doubt as to the freshly prepared side of things, but it was absolutely delicious. It is a little on the pricey side, but I don't mind paying when the food is consistently this good. I only gave four stars just because you cant reserve a table some nights and the waiting thing just gets over-crowded and i don't do crowds well at all. read more

A black woman was refused service at this restaurant because she would not give up her seat to two white men while she was having a drink at the bar. When addressing the issue with a man that was defending her, she had food thrown at her by two ghetto white people who obviously have no idea how to behave in public settings. To add insult to injury, while she was removed from the restaurant after having the police called on her, and not the people that assaulted her, the restaurant made sure that the white people who assaulted her were protected and safely escorted out the back door. I nor anyone I know would ever patronize this place. The company issued an apology, however, the bartender and manager need to be fired. Until that happens their apology is meaningless. Shame on J. I met some friends here for drinks and appetizers, the place seems busy all the time; we had couple of drinks, the appetizers were good but nothing special and prices was a bit high, we had a good time and the server was very nice but she had about 5 tables on the same time so we had to wait until she had time to come back to our table Great place to meet with friends however I had better. With so much competition around they should lower their prices a bit, you can have an artichoke appetizer just as good at a lower price I have not seen a manager checking on any guests, at least not around our table read more

I had a really pleasant experience at J. Alexander's. The ambiance was warm, classy, and relaxing. This restaurant is perfect for brunch or a nice dinner out. The service was attentive and friendly throughout the meal, and everything came out in a timely manner. But the highlight for me was the mimosa. It was honestly one of the best I've had in a really long time. The meal itself was enjoyable and well prepared, which made the whole experience even better. Do not patronize this establishment. An employee recently banned an African American woman from being served when the diner would not give up her seat to two white men after the white female employee requested that she do so! Why is J Alexander's going back to the 1960s racist ways of banning blacks from lunch counters? Food was thrown, drinks were spilled and violence ensued. To top it off, the diner was expected to pay her bill when the cops arrived at the scene. I will never dine here again. read more

I had an incredible experience at Jay Alexander's. I ordered the French Dip, and it was absolutely amazing--perfectly seasoned and delicious. I also had a fresh, crisp salad that paired perfectly with the meal. I sat up next to the bar, which had a really cool and comfortable vibe. The bread seemed like it had been sitting out for a while since the cut side was sort of hard like the crust. The chicken Bryan was pretty good though, but the broccoli was either over cooked or was frozen because it was a bit mushy and too salty. The service was okay and the ambiance was nice, but I don't think I'd ever crave this place.

We went here for my wife's birthday and thought I would treat her to a nice restaurant for dinner and that's exactly what it was. Now the way their ordering process goes is a little confusing, I don't know if it was our waitress or it's just how things go but we ordered our drinks and then after they came Out with our drinks then they asked if we wanted an appetizer then after that came out they asked if we wanted a meal, so like I said I don't know if that's how they do it or it was just our waitress. So we ordered our drinks and I had a Smoked Old Fashioned, anywhere I go if I see that cocktail on the menu I order it, when it came out they had the smoke infuser on it and when they took it off the smoke just bellowed out, it tasted amazing, I have to say that it was a really good old fashioned. For an appetizer I had the Caesar Salad which tasted fresh, crunchy and just refreshing, the cheese was delicious and the dressing was really good. Next I ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo with Chicken added and it was very delicious, the noodles were soft, the chicken was delectable and the sauce was very flavorful. Everything from the ambience to the food here was flawless with the exception of some older gentleman that didn't stop talking the WHOLE time we were there, nothing we could do about that but everything was perfect and I would love to come back and try other meals. So a few things to point out is they offer valet parking for $12, they offer brunch & Breakfast every Saturday & Sunday and on the bill they add Gratuity (20%) on there already just so you know before heading there, most people freak out about not knowing this and I am here to tell you it is added, however, the food was worth every bit of it.

We were there for a special occasion (I added that to the reservation note); not the biggest deal, but we weren't asked about that at all. The drinks were decent, but not the best, and the same was true for the food. Some dishes were pretty good, including my husband's chicken parmesan, but others could have been better. We also tried the crème brûlée cheesecake for dessert, which was pretty good, but the brûlée top was gummy rather than crackable. Additionally, the plates themselves were somewhat hard to eat from as aesthetics seemed to come before functionality. No spoons set with the flatware, either, which should be standard for an Italian restaurant. The atmosphere was good, and server was friendly, but service was a bit spotty for a relatively slow night. However, food and drinks arrived quickly. Our water glasses were not ever topped off, and when the busser did come by, the wrong plates were taken away; bread and oil were removed and our dirty/empty dishes left behind at the table. So, it was decent, but not quite the fine dining experience it purports to be. Hopefully it will get there, because it is a cool spot.
