I went here back in Dec 20th on Friday before catching a movie. I heard good reviews about this place so I had to get some snack here. I got Popcorn Chicken ($8.50) it was hot and fresh carefully wrapped in a bag with napkins and a bamboo skewer (to use it like a fork). It had sweet peppery flavour with crispy texture. The meat was tender as well. I couldn't finish it so I took the leftover with me. Popcorn Chicken was still tasty earlier and I wouldn't regret it. I love Taiwanese fried chicken or popcorn chicken or whatever you call it. At about $10, it is pricy for a snack food. I had the original popcorn chicken. It was just a bit spicy. As it was made to order, I had to wait for 5-10 minutes. It was worth the wait as there was nothing worse than soggy fried chicken. I think the chicken was breast meat? It was moist and not dry at all. The size of each piece was quite big when compared to the tinier size (and price) in Asia. I like it and I will try the other fried items on the menu. read more

Super basic fried chicken place not worth the time. The only good thing from here was the sweet potato fries. But that was quite good not exceptional. I was in Taiwan earlier this year and saw J&G everywhere. I have heard great things about J&G when I was in Taiwan but didn't get a chance to try it. At that time there were other restaurants on my list that took priority. This is J&G first location in North America. I was excited when I heard about it. Prices here are definitely higher than Taiwan. Well, anything that comes oversea especially from Asia tends to be much pricier. An example are all the bubble tea places from Taiwan. So, I got the signature crispy popcorn chicken without the pepper. The chicken was ok. It did tasted like the chicken nuggets that you get from supermarket and heat up. It was $8.50 for a tiny bag. Definitely not worth the price. Also it was not super crispy either. The chicken are made upon order. So they are somewhat fresh. But I have to say if I were comparing them to KFC. KFC is definitely a better deal and KFC tastes better too. Also the chicken texture was somewhat weird. It didn't taste like real chicken. As mentioned before it tasted like the chicken nuggets that you get in a box and reheat yourself. Maybe it's grinded up chicken and reassembled. Went here before the whole pandemic went down. Wanted to try their food as I missed the deadline for their other branch for an event. Loved the spicy chicken knee... oh how I want more of it... my true Asian comes out with eating these crunchy morsels of knuckles. The ordered the popcorn chicken without spice just the salt and pepper for my son. Found it a tad too sweet (prob as it comes out better for when they add spice) but my son still loved it. My only regret I wish I didn't try this before the pandemic went down as I just knee'd me some more J&G chicken. Will have to try their other products one day:) read more

I ordered the Deep Fried Spicy Chicken Bites -- it was good, made fresh to order, juicy and very tasty, and a bit salty. But it was not worth the $9 I paid for. Very expensive for 4 bite-size pieces. I would not order this again. And because the orders are made to order, the service was really SLOW. For the two items I ordered, it took 20 minutes!! The Deep Fried Squid Balls are also expensive. You get only 2 pieces for $3.99 and there is no dipping sauce whatsoever so it was bland. Not going back here. First time trying J&G chicken (香香雞） it's surprised me with the taste. They use real chicken meats. I order the popcorn chicken as it's their signature popular item on the menu. it's really favourable and juicy. It has a really rich flavour in it. Very intense. You can choose the flavour as an original, mildly spicy, medium spicy or very spicy, it all depends on your own taste Also, I order their chicken wing, tasted completely different that no other places have before. Originated from Taiwan and this fried chicken franchise opened its first location in west Canada in November 2018 in the food court of Crystal Mall, Burnaby. It was on a campaign during soft opening and I didn't have a chance to try it until recently. I ordered their popcorn chicken and fried squid balls, both were regular flavour which is seasoned with pepper with very mild spiciness. You may also order their spicier version. Flavour wise they were the same as the locations I went in Taiwan. The chicken is a tad dry which is the way their popcorn chicken is. The fried squid balls were soft and tender inside out with similar seasoning as popcorn chicken on the outside. The other day I came by and lucked out during their Mother's Day promotion when you would get a 10% discount. The regular price is on the expensive side for the portion you get. It is also more expensive than Taiwan. However, it is a nice addition in Crystal Mall for an alternative option of snacking. read more

Have you ever been to the Crystal Mall food court? It is similar to the ones in Aberdeen Centre or Parker Place, except it is in Burnaby, near Metrotown. If not, there is now a reason for you to pay a visit. J & G Fried Chicken originated from Taiwan, opened its first-ever location of North American in Vancouver in December 2018. The shop features using fresh and high-quality chicken for all its menu items. A few weeks ago, I was invited to a media event to try their food item, and it then becomes one of my favourite stalls in the food court. Though I found some items are on a saltier side, others are delicious! I am surprised by the wide selection of deep fried chicken parts, from knee cartilage, thighs, wings, breasts, and even breast cartilage. I tried a few items on the menu, such as the signature Crispy Popcorn Chicken, Heart-Shaped Chicken Cutlet, Chicken Wings, Spicy Chicken Bites, and Chicken Knee Cartilage. The stall uses an open-kitchen style, where customers can see the deep-frying process. The chicken is first marinated in over 10 spices, then coated with their secret batter to make it juicy and crispy. The chicken is also made to order, which the customers can taste it fresh without greasiness. My favourite of all is the deep fried Chicken Wings because its seasoning is on point. There is a hint of spiciness, but I think it is still acceptable for people who don't eat spicy. Unlike other places, they sell the whole chicken wing. So I think the price is acceptable, given that the market price of the small chicken wings is already expensive. For the signature Popcorn Chicken, it uses boneless and skinless chicken breasts, so it is considered healthier than most of the places out there. I like that they have the option of non-spicy and spicy version. However, I hope the spicy seasoning can be sprinkled more evenly on to the chicken pieces. If you are looking for a cute, romantic, edible gift to your loved one, the Heart-Shaped Chicken Cutlet is your best bet! They purposely cut the whole chicken breast in half to make it shaped like a heart. But I still prefer eating bite-size, because deep-fried food is always better as a snack. J & G Fried Chicken also offers some non-meat option, and my favourite is the deep fried King Oyster Mushrooms. It reminds me of the street food in the night markets in Taiwan! I would say this is my must-order item if I can only pick one on the menu. Yam Fries was not bad, but not too special. Well, I am not a big fan of yam fries, so I am biased on this. My friends all enjoyed it because it has a subtle sweetness. It is then lightly coated with salt. Overall Impression Although J & G Fried Chicken is on a pricier side on certain items, I think it is still worth it because they \use fresh and high-quality chicken. The portion is perfect if you are looking for a snack in Crystal Mall. I highly recommend getting the Chicken Wings, Popcorn Chicken, and King Oyster Mushrooms. If I were to change one thing, I hope the chicken to be less salty, and the spicy seasoning is sprinkled more evenly. Overall, I had an excellent experience there. I found out about this place on Facebook and Instagram. Seeing as I love fried chicken I had to give it a try. I saw that they had their grand opening on Dec 1. I have never heard of this company before but just reading the menu it says it started in 1973 and is the best fried chicken from Taiwan with " legendary flavour"... It is located inside Crystal Mall in the food court. I ordered their salt and pepper chicken bites, they had another flavour which was spicy. When I got my bites, I guess they made a mistake and gave me spicy instead. It was $9, $9.45 including tax. The flavour was pretty good but the portion was very small. For almost 10 bucks I could have gone to almost any of the places in the food court and got a full meal whether a plate of fried rice, chow mein or whatever. Not a good deal at all. Their popcorn chicken is a great snack. I love them. The octopus balls are pretty good too but you only get 2. The flavour of the minced pork on rice is on spot but the pork to rice ratio is a bit off. Wish they would give more pork so I'm not left with half bowl of white rice. read more

I had high hope's for this place as I have never tried this brand of chicken nuggets despite visiting Taiwan multiple times. I had their chicken on their soft opening. Wait time was about 5 minutes as I went in the middle of the afternoon. Their chicken was not what I expected. It was sort of like western style chicken you would find at Chinese Canadian restaurants with the thick batter. It did have a salty peppery taste like other Taiwanese chicken nuggets though. Overall the flavor, texture and size did not warrant 10 dollars. In the bag I counted around 10 pieces of chicken. That works out to be $1 for each bite sized piece of chicken. Tasty Taiwan style popcorn chicken! Asked for a medium spice level which was very nice (I could have gone hotter but I like flavour not just heat). Prices are a bit high, but not too bad. The chicken was hot and tasty, would definitely order again, probably my favourite in the food court right now. They also have a variety of fries and yam fries. Pity there's no onion rings or tempura veggies. I would definitely have ordered some with the same coating and spicy seasoning. read more

We had to give J&G a try because it was the newly hyped "Taiwanese chicken place" When ordering, the service we received was very welcoming. We ordered the 'popcorn chicken' . The chicken had good seasoning, nostalgic of the taste in Taiwan. I'm personally not a huge fan of chicken breast because it has a high failure rate of being dry but you could definitely tell that they freshly fried real chicken breast on the spot, to a point where it was crispy but still juicy on the inside. read more
