ONLINE ORDER- So i ordered a a rod from this place and it was somehow delivered to the wrong house so i emailed them back and they were glad to send a replacement, cool. After 3 weeks i noticed i still havent received a tracking number from them as the status of the item stayed at "we are preparing your item to ship. I finally email back and the owner reply "I sent a message to the shipping dept." That's all you say? Didnt want to look into it? Shift the blame if there was a shipping department. I dont think he had the intention of ever sending a replacement hoping i'd go away silently so i just disputed it with my credit card company which gave him 3 weeks to reply. The audacity of this owner to send me an email first before replying to my credit card company saying he wont be shipping a replacement anymore just blew my mind( i confirmed my suspicison as i called my credit card company told me they got no response from him yet.Complete lack of professionalism and ethics was the first negative experience since getting into fishing, the community is great but i guess this is why we cant have nice things read more

I ordered online and well I did have a problem shipping does take long so I would recommend ordering next day shipping if you need the reel urgently it took me about 2 and a half weeks to receive my reel but that was due to the reel being out of stock and I contacted Josh and honestly they have the best customer service on call and due to this problem Josh gave me free line on the house honestly I would order again great service read more

Online experience was horrible, and required a credit card dispute to resolve (or I'd still be waiting for several hundred dollars "refund"). The web inventory is widly inaccurate, and missing items (which have already been paid for) took weeks (over a month) to backfill (but not completely). An expensive reel required multiple emails and a voicemail over 10+ days before it left, only to reauire a return (at my expense). Communication was poor (at best). Strangely, it was 'off-season'. With the savings, I added spooling of 50 lb Power Pro Spectra to the reel. Proud of my cheap prowess, I placed my order the evening of 7/27. Now, J & H's webpage clearly has a COVID-19 update. Online orders are taking longer to fulfill, and shipping can be delayed. Before ordering, I saw the reel was in stock & shipping was usually in 7 - 10 business days. I had my fishing trip planned for 8/20, so I thought that would be enough time for fulfillment. The update says to email with questions, and not call the store, as that would take manpower away from completing orders. Probably due to my eagerness to have my weapon of mass fish destruction in my grubby paws, I emailed twice to check the status. My eyes lit up when I saw my order shipped 8/11. Come 8/14, I had my sexy, curvy reel in my possession. I believe J & H Tackle's honesty upfront with their COVID-19 update & the email replies back, displayed they are a stand up business. I'm quite happy with the deal I got on my spanking new Lexa & I'm giddy like a kid with a new toy in the package, waiting to open up the fun. I ordered a VR51 and had it spooled up with line, VR51 reels spin the opposite direction of most reels because they are made for folks that are left handed, you would think a tackle shop would know that, mistakes happen and I emailed them about it, no response. suppose I could just write it off as a simple mistake but when they sent me my package they included 2 sticker backings, no stickers, just the trash, keep the trash next time. although they have a great selection and very competitive pricing, unfortunately I will not be buying from J&H again. read more

Between a big selection of rods, reels, apparel, plugs, baits, reel spoiling and repair, etc.......you will definitely find what you need. Staff is friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable about what you need whether you are a beginner or professional fisherman. There are a few fishing store in Long Island that carry Van Staal and J&H is one of them. So long behold I get all my Van Staal equipment here. Prices are also the best around. Make sure to sign up for their emails online as you will get a 10% off initial coupon. Every once in a while you will get a discount coupon to use for anything (I think) in the store. To spool line on reel was charged 27.99 for 150 yards of braid when most places give you 300 yards. Very shady. I have shopped here many times over the years but will never again. I would not buy an 8 oz sinker from this store. I spent about $800 here getting a rod, an Avet reel and some tackle. Came back a month later spent another $750 bought the Accurate Tern and some other items. Had nothing but problems with the reel and J&H would do nothing to help me. The in-store customer service is bad. Not only is it bad but you need to always check the online prices because they are usually lower than what your charged in the store. I just updated and up graded my fishing gear, bought 5 or 6 new reels 5 new rods and other tackle. Will not ever go back!!! read more

I've purchased a few things from J&H and they were pretty good. But I'm giving a 1 start because I upgraded from the new Vanford reel to a Van Staal which is about twice the price. With Van Ford there was a delay but if I didn't contact them I wouldn't have known. So when I decided to upgrade I wanted to make sure they had it. Also I got lucky that they had a promo that if you bought a Van Staal you get a free dark matter travel rod, I was like nice my lucky day, that's what I thought. I get a email that part of my order has shipped so I emailed them asking what happening with my order? They emailed back saying my reel got shipped and my rod would ship the next day. So I responded and thanked them. Then I'm not sure if it was a few days or a week but now the rod was on back order till February. So emailed again asking what's going on and they said they miscounted or something like that. I said how did you miscount if you sent me an email that my rod was shipping the next day??? So they gave a choice to get another rod but it's not a travel rod. I said I really don't have a choice because I really wanted the travel rod since I have other rods already. So I waited and now I asked about my order and now they say sorry everything is delayed and it take 4 more months. I know it's hard with the pandemic and all but man the is getting frustrating. I mean they are good with responding to emails but if you don't ask about your order they won't give you any heads up. No follow up what so ever. I can't even ask for a refund because this promo was a free travel rod, so the options of taking a different rod, wait or refund kind of sucks with my situation. I don't need a different rod and can't get a refund because I didn't pay anything. So waiting is my only option. So this review is not saying they have bad customer because they do answer emails and provide answers but the 1 star is for no follow on orders that are delayed and giving me a email that the product I'm waiting for was going to ship the next day after they sent my other product. I'm really hoping they follow up with my order and I would actually get it. Right now I'm looking at least 6 months waiting which I kind of think is ridiculous. Don't say you're shipping something and then DONT and then it gets delayed for months. My purchase was not cheap. Well I'm done venting.. I'll keep you all posted on what happens, hopefully I get my rod that was promised to me. One star because I couldn't leave no stars!! I can't speak for their products because after 7 weeks of waiting and calling to check on order it still hasn't come. Then you call you speak to the customer service and get a bunch of stories!!! They act like they're doing you a favor buying from them. I wouldn't recommend them for anything....find another store!! I've now made a few visit J&H Tackle for fishing needs. They had a really good selection, especially with Daiwa and a few other brands. They explained the differences and why they recommended Daiwa as This brand is has a bunch of cool features. The store has lots of character and heritage from what makes mom/paps fishing stores so special. What really blew me away is that this tackle store keeps in contact well after the initial visit to make sure all is good and what's coming with new items. The entire staff was extremely friendly and you can tell that they all are very passionate about fishing and know their stuff ! I will continue to visit J&H for all my Daiwa and fishing needs. read more

Don't bother paying for express shipping. They will ship when they get to it. I ordered on a Tuesday morning and paid for two day shipping trying to get the gear by the weekend. I had to email them Thursday asking for a refund for the two day shipping since they hadn't shipped it yet. After that, I saw that they created the sticker, but it only actually got to Fedex by today (Friday). They didn't respond to my email, and it looks like it will arrive next Tuesday. I assume I am out for the shipping cost. Just do ground shipping, or hell maybe that won't even get shipped. read more

Fair Warning Watch Who You Trust Just bought a New Daiwa Ballistic LT 2500D-XH from J&H and they sent what looks like a demo reel or possibly a repaired reel in a Tatula Lt Box and with Tatula paperwork! That makes the reel unable to be returned since it did not come in original packaging. according to J&H Return policy... I bought what I thought was a new Reel in good faith and comes in the wrong box no seal? I paid in advance and did my part and J&H failed to send me what I thought I was purchasing. Now they want me to return everything and hope and pray that all goes well for a exchange. If they did as was expected during the sale and send what was expected in the first place this would not be here The owner would rather antagonize the disabled than resolve a issue and they don't understand facts very well. when you claim you are selling something new and it isn't that's fraud sorry. read more

Horrible Customer Service sub-par Product Tried ordering from this company, as they sponsor a well-known Long Island fisherman and YouTube personality. Wish I hadn't. After waiting 10 days for my order to ship, I called...twice. The first time I was told the "guy who took care of online orders" wouldn't be in until later. I called again and it was as if I was bothering him. Oddly, it was marked shipped that afternoon? When the order arrived, the reel I received (no better deal than buying local) was fine, but their "custom" power handle made for this reel (the actual reason I bought from this company) did not fit the reel. The threaded holes were poorly machined and in the wrong position as well. I sent a response immediately, and 6 days and a second email later, I'm still waiting. I placed an order online for a Quantum Accurist Baitcasting Reel along with 300 yards of PowerPro Super Slick v2 Braid (20lb test) and a power handle. During the online ordering process, it asks if you wish for J&H tackle to professionally spool the reel prior to shipping which I selected. However - because the Accurist only uses about 150yards of braid (give or take), I OVER-ordered knowing that I would use the remaining braid on another reel I have at home. I requested that the company put any remaining unused braid in the box prior to shipping and also requested if they could mount the power handle to the reel prior to shipping. To take it one step further, I opened a support ticket online under the order with the same request to make sure someone saw it just in case the order comments were ignored. Unfortunately, the entire order comments was ignored and I received my package with the accurist reel spooled, but without any un-used braid in the package which was specifically requested. This presents two problems as a customer. The first is that now I can no longer confirm if they put new braid on the reel from a new 300 yard package, or if the company ripped me off by using a remaining spool from another customer order (yes - this happens). Secondly, my trust is now violated as I cannot confirm the amount of braid used, nor did I get what I paid for because 50% or more of my braid was not included. The accurist reel doesn't use much braid so 300 yards is much more than needed. To not include this in the box by default seems odd to me. I opened a online chat with Josh F (the owner) and explained the situation. I have ordered from J&H for many years in person but started recently using their online ordering system since I moved to Westchester County and am too far for a quick drive. I offered to Josh to send me a new 300 yard PowerPro Super Slick v2 braid spool which is what I paid for, but he declined and suggested I send the entire order back for a refund which I agreed. I find it odd that J&H would rather pay shipping on a return then to do what is right for a customer based on their mistake. I then asked Josh if I should re-order again after receiving my refund in hopes that it will be corrected and he suggested I order from another retailer. This is clearly not good customer service and not what I expect from a retailer that I have given my business to over an 8 year period. J&H has lost a customer, but Josh's response as a business owner is unacceptable and shows poor business practices in my opinion. About a year ago I came in to J&H to get one of my reels spooled for the 5 cent braid discount they had at the time. I assumed it was the original 8 strand daiwa j braid but when I came into the store I was informed the 4 strand j braid was on sale. (Email I received just said "j braid" not specifying which one). After I found this out, I settled on the new j braid grand and the employee who spooled my reel told me it was thirty dollars. I went to check out and the cashier told me it was thirty five dollars and not the thirty the other employee told me. At the time I'm writing this, their website says $30 for the 300 yards of 20lb test I got. Anyway, I politely addressed the employee ringing me up and he just shrugged his shoulders and didn't bother to check. Not the first time this has happened to me either. I came in for one of their 15% off sales and apparently you have to request the deal at the time of check out. When I walked in I asked one of the employees to confirm the 15% off, only for the same gentleman to ring me up without the discount less than 10 minutes later. I only found this out after leaving and was out of about fifteen dollars. I called the store four times just to wait over a month to get a gift card in the mail. Not that those 15 dollars mattered to me, I just wanted to see if they would make it right. I realize these are just small purchases but the only reason I payed attention was because some of my larger purchases (rods, reels, etc.) consistently seemed to add up to more than they should have been. I have never left a review on anything before but I felt this needed to be addressed. Overall, the store has a decent selection, but subpar customer service compared to other local shops. The prices are fair (when they ring you up correctly) but I would not reccomend J&H to anyone because of what I've experienced shopping with them in the past. I'm not looking to get hooked up, I'm just looking to be treated fairly. I'll buy my tackle at another local business from now on. Now, hopefully josh can feature my review on an Instagram live video where he can prove to his audience that I'm wrong for writing about my negative experience at his establishment. read more

My go to place for fishing tackle. Most people do what I do travel 20 to 45 minutes to this place. They have the best prices on all Rods and Reels. Look in the circular and see the discounts or The Fisherman Magazine. If your into fishing like me, you probably know about this place already. Terrible experience with J&H tackle. I ordered a fishing pole approximately 3 weeks in advance of a trip. Their website indicated it was in stock. Two weeks later, I had not received a notification of shipment so I emailed them. No response. Then I called and was told the item was out of stock and that they were way behind in orders. I cancelled my order and did not receive the equipment in time for my trip. The customer service person made all kinds of lame excuses using Covid. Terrible customer service.
