J&J Oyster Bar is one of those places that has stayed in my memory long after the meal was over. I visited before I went gluten-free, but I'll never forget how much I enjoyed it. There was no wait, plenty of parking on the sides and in the back, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming from the moment we arrived. We sat at the bar, where the manager took great care of us and made us feel right at home. To celebrate a birthday, they even comped a drink, which was a thoughtful touch and much appreciated. The food was outstanding. We started with the shrimp cocktail, ceviche tostada, and Oyster Rockefeller, all of which were fresh and packed with flavor. For the main course, I had the shrimp and catfish combo served with fries and hush puppies--a classic seafood meal done right. The selection of drinks paired perfectly with the food, and the friendly service made the entire experience even better. Great food, great atmosphere, and exceptional hospitality. J&J's is one of our regular go to's, usually for Gulf oysters or fried shrimp, but in the winter we go for Angel's off the chain chili. And today did not disappoint. This is chili Nirvana. We set out on a FTW chili quest last winter and then as now the chili that Angel whips up here at J&J's we think is the king of the hill. It is pretty much the same as he was making back in the day at Fred's. And now, as then, it is the bomb. Chock full of tender cubes of sirloin, a perfect balance of chili seasonings, and heat that makes your palate stand up and salute the Texas and Mexico flags. It is topped with a generous layer of cheese, garnished with a handful of sliced fresh jalapeños and then finished under the broiler. We each brought about half of our servings 'home for supper this evening. J&J's has an expansive menu. My one wish for the store would be to see the beer game elevated. I suspect that taps are not doable here due to space constraints, but surely some of the great local bottled and canned beers could be added to the offerings. But the chili. It's all really good and very reasonable on the price for excellent fish/seafood, etc. with a Louisiana/Gulf Coast flair This location offers outside dining under a canopy and a small inside dining space with bar seating, as well. Went for a quick dinner with a friend who is a regular but it was my first time. Britney was our server and was super sweet and told us all about the history and made fantastic recommendations! We got the hot and spicy peel and eat shrimp and the oysters Rockefeller. Shrimp comes with ketchup and horseradish so you can get your own level of spice for your cocktail sauce. They weren't too spicy, just right and so good! It was a huge plate for two of us and I was skeptical we'd finish it all but they were so good we did. Now the oysters Rockefeller stole the show. A week ago I had them at del frisco double eagle steak house and they were good, but j&js blew them out of the water. They were so tasty and we should have ordered more than six. I'm happy I live close by because this will be a new staple for me. Also ordered hush puppies cause I had to try them. Britney said they were a new version. They are round and smaller but perfect size. Not too dry, just enough crunch and soft inside. They were so tasty. My only sort of issue was with the tartar sauce, I like it with my hush puppies and I like it chunky, there's is more creamy mayo with not as much mixed in. This former Taco Bell restaurant has been transformed into a solid and charmingly funky seafood joint. The service is quick and friendly and the food is spectacular. My companion said the gulf oysters were fresh and tasty, and the gumbo very good. My combo basket, with fried catfish, shrimp, hush puppies, and fries, was piping hot and delicious. Everything tasted clean and fresh, without any greasy excess. Even the fries seemed to be fresh cut, from actual potatoes. The food and service were perfect. Me and my wife both loved the ambiance and Dallas was a pretty chill server. He was welcoming, got our order correct and checked on us throughout the meal. The raw oysters on the half shell were meaty and delicious. Served with cocktail sauce, lemon wedges, and horse radish, which of course is the perfect combination. They were fresh and delicious. I also ordered the Mexican shrimp cocktail, and hands down, one of the best classic shrimp cocktails. Very plentiful. My wife ordered the grilled shrimp tacos and she loved them. If you're a cheese and pepper type of person, this might be for you, but the flavors just weren't for me. It was cheese melted over oysters, and the ice it was on was sparse and melting. We didn't finish the dish. The fried catfish basket I got was great! Crispy and fresh tasting, served with tartar sauce. The hushpuppies were amazing, definitely recommend! I was actually so pleasantly surprised with this place. I don't know how I've never eaten here before now, as much as I love seafood and crawfish. It wasn't too packed, really good service and I truly enjoyed the food. The oysters were fresh and delicious. The Rockefeller was not my favorite but still tasty and their grilled tuna was FREAKING FABULOUS. I would probably say easy on the salt next time for the plate because the zucchini and squash was a bit salty for me but man it was tasty as a whole. Lunched there today, the oil used to fry was obviously old, the fish and fries were very dark and the catfish was an inferior filet, most likely frozen with s strong fishy, off taste. Another delicious meal at J&J's. This visit was me, the wife & grandson Evan. We started with our usual. A dozen each raw oysters and jalapeno hush puppies. Evan is not a raw oyster fan. The seafood gumbo was made with a thick consistency, had a little rice in it, and a great flavor. It also had a little kick to it. Delicious enough I ordered a second cup! Found a bay leaf in it, major plus. Means fresh and home made to me! I had to have some fried oysters. I ordered the dozen fried oysters with fries and hush puppies. The sides were average but good. They served it with red sauce and a side of straight hot horse radish. Major plus. The oysters? Sublime! Really good. They are not cheap, but real seafood is not cheap. They get their oysters out of Galveston. They gave me 13, which I appreciated as they were medium in size. Fun good find. But use the restroom before you come, because the restaurant bathroom is outside in the back of the building. Kind of like a gas station. And it smells about the same. The service was fine. Friendly and fairly quick. The fried catfish was great! The fried oysters were OK - but there were several that were a very rubbery. The fries were literally the greasiest fries I've ever seen- I am really sorry I did not send them back. The hush puppies are fairly tasteless. I probably won't go back. The food was fine, but my disappointment was in the prices charge versus what they showed on the menu. The beer prices were all off by 25 cents to 50 cents. The one-piece catfish that was ordered was off by $3.00. These are menus that are printed on a printer that are on the tables so they can easily be updated. And to make matters worse, the tip suggested amount includes tipping the tax, but of course, you only tip what you eat and drink. Just on the back of the building. Parking is difficult if it's busy. I always get the gumbo. It's not a traditional gumbo more creamy , but good. I really like the Crawfish. They have seasoning shakers to add extra but they rarely need it. They have a wet and dry seasoning. I always do dry. They also have Louisiana hot sauce !!!! A must for crawfish and Cajun type foods.
