On November 22, this shop put my winter tires on my vehicle. This past Friday (December 12), I got a flat. When I went to change the tire, it took all of my body weight standing on the lug wrench and rocking up and down while holding the side of the car to loosen the first four wheel bolts, and I am not a small or weak guy by any stretch. Unfortunately, the head of the last lug nut was stripped and thus impossible to get off, as the lug wrench would not grip it sufficiently to apply the 1,000 ft/lbs of torque or whatever was needed to loosen it. I thus had to have the car towed to a shop to remove the wheel bolt and put the spare tire on. In decades of driving and getting multiple flat tires over the years, I've never not been able to change one. Last Friday marked the first time. My theory is that in the interest of speed, as well as post-COVID staffing shortages, many shops, including this one, have inexperienced and untrained employees using an air wrench to tighten the wheel bolts. Wheel bolts, however, are supposed to be torqued to a specific specification - usually 80-120 lbs/ft, depending on your car. Air wrenches, when not properly used, can apply massively more torque than this. Overtightening wheel bolts may not sound like a big deal. Tight is good, yes? Well, doing this causes multiple problems. For one thing, unless you are an athlete with a lot of strength, you won't be able to change your tire if you get a flat and you will be stranded. Hopefully you are not in a remote area, it's not very late at night, or it's not freezing cold when that happens - and when else would it happen? LOL! Excessive torque from an air wrench can strip the slightly rounded heads of wheel lug nuts and bolts. See attached pictures of my stripped wheel bolt. If that occurs, then the wheel bolt isn't coming off and you will need a tow to a shop, and hopefully you are near one when you get your flat tire! Overtightening can cause stress fractures in your rim, warp your brake rotors, and crack or damage your wheel studs if you have a lug nut/stud setup. If you have wheel locks, an overtightened wheel lock bolt can break your wheel key, and you will spend hundreds of dollars getting the lock off. Thank God that did not happen to me on Friday, as my wheel lock bolt was one of the ones I was able to wrestle off, but it easily could have. My recommendation is to avoid this place and torque your own wheel bolts. If you are not in a position to do that, then find a reputable shop with good reviews and ask them if they use a torque wrench or an air wrench when they install wheels. If they use an air wrench, or you get a vague and uncertain answer, go to a different shop that will torque your wheels down to their proper factory specifications. Your life may actually depend on it!

Considering my car is 10 years old and that I've been putting off some of the services for a while, I decided that it was time to get those done; however I didn't like the price that I was getting from this place or the other Mazda service centers I called. I figured I'd give a local shop a try and I'm extremely glad I did! From the very first call I was already feeling good about these guys. Lee picked up the phone pretty quickly; I asked if I could email the list of services to them and get their quotes, and he said no problem and gave me their email. He also answered a few other questions I had and kept everything effortless and professional. After I emailed them I got a quick reply from Brian who also answered my questions and provided the quotes, which were much more reasonable! It was very easy to make an appointment for my car, and even when I had to reschedule there was no trouble doing so. I dropped my car off in the morning and met both Lee and Brian who were both very friendly and personable. Their waiting room is comfortable with a TV, a fridge with water, and even some toys to keep kids occupied while you wait. Since I was leaving my car for the day I brought my Onewheel electric skateboard, which Lee saw, and he showed me his e-bike and we talked a bit about PEVs (personal electric vehicles) before I rode my Onewheel back home. My car was ready for pickup by the end of the day as they said it would be, and it's been running great ever since! I also recently got an oil change there and it was probably the fastest one I've experienced from giving them the keys to getting them back (no more than 45 minutes, compared to the dealership service center where I've waited ~90 minutes on average). Everything has been uncomplicated with no surprises so far! Aside from the quick and straightforward work that they do, I also appreciate that they have a rewards program that helps you save money on future services. They are also regular sponsors of local events and are a big part of the community. It feels much better bringing my car to a local shop that supports and gives back to the community rather than going to a dealership that doesn't really do that. I'll definitely be returning here again!

I initially brought my car in for what I understood to be a fairly basic issue. Despite this, I ended up waiting approximately 10 days to get my vehicle back. I understand that automotive repairs can sometimes take longer than anticipated due to parts, scheduling, or unexpected complications, but the length of the delay did not seem reasonable given the nature of the work. More importantly, communication throughout the process did little to make the situation better. My biggest concern was the way the repairs and pricing were handled. The cost changed significantly from what I had originally anticipated, and work was performed on my vehicle before I had given my approval or consent to the additional charges. I was not contacted beforehand and given a clear explanation of the proposed work, the associated costs, and an opportunity to approve or decline it. Instead, I was essentially informed after the fact that the work had already been completed and that I was responsible for paying for it. The final pricing was also extremely high, especially considering that I had not authorized the changes before the work was performed. As a customer, I expect a repair shop to communicate clearly about any additional work or significant changes in price and obtain authorization before proceeding. Finding out afterward that the work had already been completed left me feeling as though I had no meaningful choice in the matter. Unfortunately, my interaction over the phone made the experience even more frustrating. The person I spoke with came across as unnecessarily rude, dismissive, and confrontational when I attempted to discuss my concerns. Rather than acknowledging the lack of authorization or trying to explain the situation professionally, the response was essentially that the work was already done and therefore I had to pay for it. The tone of the conversation made an already frustrating situation considerably worse. I am willing to pay a fair price for properly authorized work, and I understand that unexpected repairs can arise once a mechanic begins inspecting a vehicle. However, customers should be informed of those findings and given the opportunity to approve additional work before being charged for it. Between the approximately 10-day turnaround time, the unexpected and excessive pricing, work being completed without my prior approval, and the unprofessional communication afterward, I was very dissatisfied with my experience at M & R Auto. Clear communication, transparent pricing, and obtaining customer authorization before performing additional work are basic expectations when trusting a business with your vehicle. Unfortunately, I did not feel those expectations were met here.
