My 2000, yes 2000, Maxima has passed its emission test after failing. In addition, suspension is much improved after some tweaks vs all new. Excellent customer service. More than down to earth friendly; but a clear, extensive explanation of the whats and whys after completing a thorough inspection of the car. The work needed time because of the careful approach in order to not replace the entire suspension. That was a worth-it trade off. Take a bow, M&R! They told me it was going to be at least $480-$580 just to LOOK at my car if I brought it in (regardless if i got service or not) due to some misfiring. This is insane no other mechanic in chicago will ask for this much before even trying to diagnose your car, let alone before you step in the shop. Mike Moran is a crook. He charged me 3 times the standard rate for services. After I discovered this, I asked Mike Moran jr to stop servicing my vehicle. My warranty company agreed to pay for the services already performed. I informed Mike Moran jr that I will be taking my vehicle to a different mechanic. He then informed me that he will charge me an extra $6,000 dollars storage fees. Fees that were never discussed prior to him performing services on my vehicle, nor was it part of the contract. He later produced a photo shopped copy of my signature on a different document that I signed. He is currently holding my vehicle against my will. I am in the process of taking legal actions against him & his business. Part of this process is filing a complaint with the BBB which shows his business with an "F" rating. I was not surprise to find 2 other complaints against he & his business where he attempted to extort money in the same fashion. This is a common practice for this business. STAY AWAY! Although i didn't go with their service for a break replacement, i wasted hours of my time driving over to find out they charge $150 for estimate. I simply needed to replace break pads and told them the day before that my car was just serviced by the dealer. They would t give me a price for labor and told me to just swing by so that they can assess work and time for accurate price. Because of computer requirements my car needs , i took the time of work and drove to their shop to find out that it would cost me just for them to look at the car. Mike and his team are phenomenal at what they do, but more than anything, they always treat you like family. I had only been to the garage once or twice before going on a road trip to Colorado during the pandemic. Half way to our destination, the floor mat on the passenger size of the vehicle became overwhelming wet. We were 1,000 miles away from M&R, but Mike talked us through what the potential issues could be, he was able to reassured us that we indeed could continue on, and gave us instructions on how to work with a local repair shop on the fix. As if this wasn't enough, Mike called us TWICE to check in on us. Once when he knew we were going to arrive to make sure we arrived safely. M & R Car Import Services II, Inc., has been placing paper advertisements into the rubber seal of windows for cars near where I live. These paper advertisements dissolve when they get wet and leave a very hard to remove residue on the side of the window - this is not only a huge pain to clean off, but hazardous as it blocks vision while driving. As you could guess, it's not too hard for these advertisements to get wet during spring and summer rains. It's completely unacceptable that a car company, of all companies, puts damaging and obtrusive advertisements on cars. She asked for his name and to speak with a manager and he refused to say his name. He put her on hold and never came back. She hung up and called back and the call went straight to voicemail. I started going here when I needed to get my brake pads replaced. I chose them primarily for their location adjacent to the Brown Line. I could drop it off, hop on the train to work, and then pick it up. At first they buttered me up as the wholesome family looking out for their customers to build loyalty and cement some foundation. They'd done a decent job -- ostensibly -- with my brakes as they stopped squeaking and responded much better than before. Magically, however, my 2003 BMW 330i which never gave me problems until I'd brought it to M&R suddenly had problems every couple of weeks. The irony was that they insisted they'd accept manufacturer warranties and I'd asked them to examine the car thoroughly to see if there was anything I needed to address as the warranty was going to expire in about 40 days. They'd given Beam a clean bill of health, and said there were no maintenance issues that needed to addressed within the next six months so off I went. About 6 weeks later, my window seemed to misalign itself and I took it in. They then told me that it would be $800 because my warranty had expired and said my on-board computer, nav system technology, pumps, hoses, belts and such needed to be replaced. EXCUSE ME? I have a receipt here saying "There no issues orupcoming maintenance concerns for at least the next six months." And now, out of the blue, you have $3,000 worth of repairs within six weeks? Once I shelled out the money for those repairs, my car had problems within a week. It would struggle to go from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, but once it was in 3rd it was fine. I brought it back in, had to pay another $800, and a week later, it happened again. I found out that the battery had loosened up -- never mind how, the battery dwelling in my car is designed to house it tightly and securely; i'm not sure how it would come loose. So when I called to point this out, the technician told me to bring it in and they secured it for free. OK, what about the $800 I shelled out for you to flip a switch and loosen my battery? Any reimbursement? Nope. None. Then a month later, while I was driving on the Kennedy, my fuel pump apparently caught fire -- huh? how? -- which was a $750 repair. I didn't see any flames, but they said the pump caught fire quite badly. Hmm..ok. The last straw was them saying that I needed a new Mass Air Flow Sensor which would cost $740. The quote listed the "discounted" price for an OEM sensor at $580, but when you look up who the OEM manufacturer is and the retail cost, it was $430. the DEALER quoted me a lower rate than this place! I discovered that after auditing my receipts, they were routinely quoting 10 and 20% percent higher than published rates for OEM parts and freaking Perillo. Unbelievable. I'm fully aware that since my car was five years old at the time, it needed some TLC, but how curious that all of these problems arise in sequence, and how curious that they overcharged me, and how curious that simple fixes could've remedied the ostensibly dramatic problems that arose. Patty also would not release copies of my receipts to my attorney. Several phone calls and certified letters were ignored by the Moran family. Stay away -- they will squeeze every penny out of you. read more

I am surprised at the number of bad reviews this business is getting. I live nearby and have used them several times with great results. The first time was a cracked windshield, which they promptly repaired at a competitive price (I called around to several dealers and it was essentially the same as the lowest bidder). On our second visit, we had a very narrow window in which to get our plates mounted because we had to catch a flight, and the owner's son, Mike, dropped everything to install the brackets and the plates. It took 15 minutes out of his day, and he didn't even charge us anything. The people at the front desk were very friendly and worked to accommodate my schedule. Some of these reviews are complaining about price. I would say that you may be able to find better deals in some parts of the city, but given the convenient location and excellent personalized service, I will always go back to M&R. Even if it means paying an extra $50. I know the job will be done well, and there is highly accountability (given it is a family business); which is hard to find in a car repair shop these days. read more

I really wanted to like these guys - they're super friendly and accommodating. Take this with a grain of salt - they just checked out the car, I didn't have them repair anything. However, when it comes to price they really fail. I took my 8 year old BMW 330xi in when the seat belt broke - and asked them to check a couple other things out for me. Well, they found a bunch of other things that were wrong. Let's see - $316 to replace the battery? 2 other shops quoted me $150. $296 to replace the CV boot? The other shop told me the boot is fine, it doesn't need to get replaced (also got quotes far less to replace it). $151 to replace the gas cap? $18 on-line to buy a new one on-line. So, if you take your car to these guys I'd recommend you call around to make sure you're not paying way more than you need to read more

I am writing this review to warn everyone here. Please do not think I am just another disgruntled customer. You can read through all of these reviews and think some people are just mad or ignorant and go here anyways. Please do not under any circumstanced go here ever! They will take your car in for a small thing, tell you about another thing that is wrong. Charge you a ton for it, then you will have the same problem, they will charge you even more to try another thing. This will go on and on until you have had enough, go to a real mechanic and they fix it for half the cost one time. This place may not purposely be stealing there clients money, but if they are not they are simply guessing what the problem is. Either way, you will have to be the one paying the bill. They are friendly, but is $600 worth having someone be nice to you? If so, this is the place for you. read more

I had moved to Chicago from New York and, sadly, away from my trusted mechanic. I am pleased to say that I have found M&R (@ three years ago) to have filled a great void....a shop I can trust. I am treated with respect and so is my car!! Mike jr and his crew are very thorough and take the time to explain what the problem is as well as the solution to correcting it. They have gone out of their way when I have needed their help and expertise on more than one occasion (most recent was this past Labor Day weekend)! Priceless!! In my experience, I find that fixing a problem correctly the first time is more cost effective than going "here, there and everywhere" to strangers based on price, only to be disappointed and spending even more time and money. People threaten bad and unfair reviews ALL THE TIME to hurt a business if they don't get a lower price or services for FREE....like an entitlement. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. Had an oil leak, went to Jiffy Lube on North Avenue and they highly recommended this place. They even had their business card and called one of the owner's Mike Jr. for me - wonder why JL workers would be all over something like this? What do they get out of it? I dropped the car off Sunday evening. Monday morning they sent me pics of the damages, engine oil leak, axle oil leak, tire that needed repair. $1200 only. Trusted them and they went ahead. Much to my dismay I only read about them on Yelp after I said go ahead and couldn't get the job stopped. Got the car back Tuesday. Suddenly the engine seemed to be straining and idles unevenly, plus the car shudders around 60mph on the highway. Took the car back and lo and behold, suddenly there were 2 new issues with the car. The steering rack needed work and the engine diagnostic fault. About $880 damages. Are these guys for real? They keep saying they have been in business for 33 years, but read the other reviews. It has taken some people years to figure out their MO. There's even an ex-employee that talks about how they rip customers off. Do not be fooled by their friendly manner, the gold on the outside is a disguise for the dark on the inside. Actually, I will make a better suggestion - just avoid at all cost. read more

In fact, my husband thoroughly investigates before we use businesses... especially on our cars. We have taken the GL450 in to get serviced, and we have been very pleased. They even helped me obtain the new license sticker to save time and hassle on my part, which was great. I have always had good experiences with Chris, Patti, and Mike Jr as they have taken care of various BMW cars I have owned which were no longer under warranty. The initial inspection is thorough, and repair practice is befitting of craftsmen who are skilled in diagnosing from years of experience and knowledge of manufacturer's practices. I was always respectful, and they have always reciprocated, if not generous and kind. When rapport and trust was developed through mutual respect, they have gone above and beyond the call of duty for several visits, taking the car in on short notice, and documenting work they did at no charge, which very much so was billable. Rates are as expected, and the parts are pricey, as for any German made premium car. I always have a hard time stomaching the cost of the repair, and am always astonished how the performs as new each time I leave the shop. The car is repaired in a manner which longevity is valued over thrift. Longevity is the natural ethos of their proposed solutions, to keep the car out of the shop. Automobiles are always expensive to repair under any cost structure, and I find Patti and Chris to show empathy each time when helping me make such decisions which will be costly. I have found M&R to always call before suggesting any work which did not fit under the intended scope. Sometimes it takes a bit longer than I would hope, but they do not promise what they cannot deliver, and do not miss deadlines which we both agreed to. I can give M&R my highest recommendation based on their courteous demeanor, timely and thoughtful repairs which reflect my ethos for automobile repair and care. read more

I have a 97 Volvo and moved to the area about six months ago. I started going to M&R because it specializes in European cars and is close to my home. I took my car there three times and had about $5000 worth of work done so I have pretty solid knowledge of this place. First of all, this is a family owned business and everyone is really nice. And they have a free loaner car when your car is in their shop, which is also nice. Unfortunately those are the only two nice things I can say. Otherwise, this shop is a complete rip-off. They will nickle-and-dime you to death. Contrary to what another poster said, I was ALWAYS charged for diagnostics and "checks." In fact on my last bill, fully one-third of the $1200 in charges were just for seeing what was wrong with the car! I understand that shops don't want to do free diagnostics and then never see the car again, but as I said I had $5000 worth of work done in six months so I think they were getting their money's worth. Even worse, they don't really want to "fix" anything..if the slightest thing is wrong with something, they just replace everything and of course charge you a bunch for labor. I balked when they wanted to charge me $350 to fix a really really small coolant leak. Lo and behold I took it to another mechanic who just tightened a clamp and that was that...didn't even have to replace the hose. Also wanted to charge me several hundred dollars to replace the hood latch (!). Took it to another mechanic who just bent it back into shape and now it is fine. Also they sent me a letter saying that my radio was getting "poor reception." No shit, sherlock, it is a factory stereo on a 12-year-old car. I certainly need a new stereo, but I am not going to buy it from my mechanic! I don't know if they are incompetent, have no common sense, or whether they are really just calculating scam artists...probably some combination of the three. Probably they get away with it because they are in a nice neighborhood and people bring in their Mercedes and just hand them a credit card and don't ask questions. They also do silly annoying things like offer to email you pictures of what's wrong with your car. WTF? Just fix it. Also, the aforementioned letter offering to fix stuff on my car, for a 10% discount, but only if I bring it in by a certain date. Gimme a break. Also, every time they work on your car they put a license place frame with their logo on your car, without permission. A place to be avoided. read more

The truth is, as another repair shop said of M & R, "lets just say they have a reputation of engaging in questionable business practices". When Mike Jr chimes in to refute my review, I have a receipt from the other shop for fixing what M & R would not honor, a receipt from M & R finally issuing a partial refund, as well as emails from Mike Jr substantiating what I am saying. My daughter brought our car for a simple emissions test. We knew the State of Illinois shut down many Emission Test Facilities, but we didn't realize they cancelled all their contracts in Chicago for business to perform these tests on their behalf. So when my daughter was home from college for a weekend, she called and ASKED IF THEY PERFORMED EMISSIONS TESTS, they responded YES THEY DO, (FIRST LIE). We asked if we needed an appointment and they said no (SECOND LIE), just come on in. When she got there 15 minutes later, they said they were busy, and said she would need to leave the car. It seemed odd for a 10-minute emission test, but we live near by and they said they would get it done so she could go back to school the following day. 6 1/2 hours later, 90 minutes before closing, Mike Jr called and explained to my daughter (then to me) that unfortunately our car failed the emissions test (THIRD LIE) but the good news is, they could fix it quickly, the battery was weak (FOURTH LIE) but they could install a new battery ($259.92) and Mike Jr was sure it would pass. We have owned the car for 13 years and never had a problem passing an emission test nor did we have a problem with the existing battery, even with the car parked on the street in the winter. Given our predicament with going back to school and expiring plates, we reluctantly agreed. Forty-five minutes and $476.24 later we picked up the car, license plate sticker in hand. Days later, despite a brand new battery, my daughter had trouble starting the car. Several days of "slow crank", then nothing, she needed a jump. Calls to M & R went unreturned, so we called the State of Illinois EPA only to learn that M & R was not licensed to perform emissions tests. The State explained that the test was performed in Skokie, Illinois; 25 miles from M & R, one test, and the car had NEVER failed a test. I persistently called Mike Jr who confirmed the "story" that it failed the emissions test. I explained that we called the State and he became quiet for the first time. Mike went on to say, the test the car failed was not actually the emissions test, but a test on the battery and they had determined it was "weak" and, based on their experience, it would have failed the emissions test. Mike Jr went to admit that they don't have the emissions equipment and take the cars to Skokie to be tested, and given the distance wanted to make sure the car had the best chance of passing, because they didn't want to do the trip twice. This is the last time Mike Moran Jr would take or return my call (despite saying he would); but now I have an email record. As if this was not bad enough, on 3/3 I reached out repeatedly requesting that he address the battery problem we now had. Mike emailed back saying while he appreciated the opportunity he was fully booked until 4/7, and advised us to go to another car repair shop, which we did, who (i) specialized in the make of our car and advised that the whole explanation re the possibility of the car failing an emissions test because of a weak battery was nonsense and (ii) found the battery size M & R installed was not the recommended size, and (iii) tested and found the battery M & R installed to be defective. The shop performing the diagnosis, immediately and professionally replaced the battery. Upon hearing the battery was in fact defective, through his customer Service Specialist (an oxy moron), Mike Jr emailed saying we needed to bring the car in immediately and he would replace it. I called, he refused to take my call but I told the assistant it was too late as it was already being replaced. He instructed me to stop them, as it would otherwise not be covered under warranty (the one he refused to honor). I have since received a $259.52 credit from Mr. Moran Jr, however, he still owes me several hundred dollars for replacing a battery that never should have been replaced in the first place and for what we learned was a $120 fee to bring the car to Skokie! Mike Jr is a professional scammer; if we had read the small print, we would have seen him trying to protect himself by disclosing the errand service in the small print. As another review says, this guy runs SCAMS....or as the other shop said in a more professional manner, "they have a reputation of questionable business practices". read more

They will also tell you if a repair is essential or if you can put it off for a while. Brought my Nissan Rogue in to replace the Serpentine Belt. M&R did the work for lots less than the Nissan Stealership. What earns them a fifth star is the near disaster they helped me avoid with my braking system. I recently had new brakes and calipers installed, and the garage that did the work failed to replace a bolt holding the front left caliper in place. I'd heard some rattling but thought it just might be brake dust. Had the caliper failed, it would have been dangerous and expensive. I went in for a basic service checkup, and in the end they came up with 6 separate "issues" requiring attention totaling over $4000. One of their recommendations was to replace 3 of my tires, even though I had done so just a few months earlier and had barely 500 miles on the new tires. Awful. These guys cost me over $3,000. I took my 2000 Volvo Cross Country in for a brake issue. They inspected the car and of course found multiple items that needed to be fixed -- leaky radiator hose, leaky power steering line, and a seal on the "angle box" that needed replacing. I realized that many of these issues need to be taken care of and since the car was under warranty I had them go ahead and fix them, paying about $800 for what the warranty wouldn't cover. Long story short the angle box seal failed as I drove from Colorado back to Chicago about two months after M & R replaced it. Sure, it's not their fault that a seal fails, except that it was replaced under warranty and the warranty stipulated that Volvo-certified parts must be used for repairs. M & R used a generic brand and so when the new seal failed the warranty wouldn't cover the $3,000 for a new angle box which was ruined. Not to mention the brakes squeaked from the second I picked the car up despite the new brake pads and rotors. Later, the rotors would warp and a shop in Denver (where I had my car towed after the anglebox incident), would refuse to fix them (and thus charge me) saying I really needed to take it back to these dipshits to do right. I'm not an angry person and generally pretty mellow about customer service, but these guys are truly awful. Never, ever go here. read more
