I read about this place in one of the Yelp weekly newsletters, the hangover cure edition. To my delight, this place is just down the street from where I work. It so happens this place is dirt cheap and I'm on a budget, it was a match made in financial heaven. For less than $5 I got a green burrito (shredded beef in a verde sauce) and guacamole fries. The next visit I had the special quesadilla (cheese, bacon, lettuce, and tomato (?)) Those were the suggestions off one of the reviews in the Yelp newsletter, and man did they steer me in the right direction. They're pretty quick about service, there always seems to be a spot just for me to park in, and when I'm craving cheap and greasy this place totally hits the spot. Wow, my first ever review. Anywho, Ive been coming to J&S for 20years. Ive ordered the same thing ever since I can remember, which is of course their famous bean & cheese burritos. Over the years I have raved about them so much I offered to buy anyone their first b&c from here. Of course they always ended up craving one after that. Now to the bad news, I dont know what happened but for the past year the b&c's have tasted less than spectacular. Ive been going back every month or so to see if theyve gone back to tasting the way Ive always remembered, but so far theyve just been ok. Please come back J&S, pleeeeeease! If you're a Montebello local, then you know what's up with J&S. This tiny hole in the wall serves some delicious Mexican fast food junk food. It's great for a breakfast burrito, after the club, and hangovers. Don't expect a 5 star dining experience. This is not your customer service type of establishment, so all the whiners, step aside. On vacation in LA and tired from our trip so my friends and I decided to do take out instead of eating out. My friend yelped this place and we saw that it was 24 hours so decided to try this place out since we wouldn't feel rushed. Just FYI: CASH ONLY!! Luckily I read that it was cash only from other yelp reviews! Anyway, we ordered a bunch of stuff. The guacamole fries which were my favorite. Very simple but flavorful. I think they should at least add sour cream or some sort of meat. We also got the nachos with cheese and added guacamole for 75 cents I believe. The cheese is not melted btw. The nachos were ok but It was definitely better with guac on it otherwise it'd be dry. Then we ordered a whole bunch of the all meat burritos. It was good but I feel like the only meat you get was shredded pork or something. It was plain but it was still good. We also got a pastrami quesidilla which I didn't get to try since I was too full but my friend said it was good haha All of that was under 40 bucks so we were happy since it fed 4 people. So J&S is definitely one of those places I probably would have passed by if I didn't know any better. I mean let's be honest, the place looks kind of intimidating, its outside, small, the parking is in the back, and in the wall there are holes that look like bullet holes! (They probably aren't but I'm a sheltered asian girl that doesn't know anything HAHA!!!). However, once again thanks to the bf and his keen knowledge of all things tasty, I have learned that J&S is home to the best breakfast burritos, and some of the best chile rellenos too. If you've read some of my other reviews, you know that I am a sucker for chile rellenos, and J&S is one of the best (I like Tepeyac the best, but thats like apples and oranges). even though they run a little small. Jack in the box, Rally's or Mcdonalds tastes better than this crap (although they are all of similar, very low quality) This is Some of the worst tasting food (In the fast food world!). Almost 50yrs in business, 24/7 operations, and basically a pick up counter restaurant. Great prices, authentic Mexican food, and pretty good food. Had the breakfast burritos, the chorizo burritos, and the quesadilla...all was very good...get the mollé sauce (spicy bbq flavor), great with the burritos. They have a very very large parking lot and the lady at the counter was very friendly and took our orders quite quickly. One thing to note the burgers were very very cooked and a little bit on the dry side but the juices from the burger that they created with it was worth it. I will say this is one of the best places I've had a burger in this area in a long time. I've been coming to J&S for longer than I can remember, which is a long time. For most of that time, they were a solid bet when you wanted a remarkably good burrito for cheap. You can read about them in many of Jonathan Gold's posts, especially about best burritos in LA. Sadly, in the past few years things just aren't the same. Prices went up, but I guess I couldn't expect $2 burritos forever. But the quality has really gone down. My last visit, I let my nostalgia get the best of me and ordered one of each: chorizo, green, and red. Chorizo was dry and burnt. The green and red lacked the flavor I remembered, and the juicy sauce that used to be difficult to contain now sat neatly in the burrito. I thought maybe a fluke. Only a friend of mine, on my rec, went there for a quick bite and same experience. The more I ask around from locals still in the area, the more I hear that this place has gone downhill fast. Shame, I have plenty of good memories. There really aren't too many stands like this open all night with the quality they had. And now there is one less. read more

Most recently, I stopped by here this past Saturday, while the sun was out, and yep, it's still the same, still delicious!! I just came here recently with my son but also this is not my first visit since I am a local. I grew up hearing the rave of the bean and cheese burritos and the taquitos and there great guacamole. Everything else on the menu is just like any other mom and pop burger place in Los Angeles with American and Mexican items on the list. On my first visit here I drove by and ordered the taquitos and bean and cheese burrito and I will agree it was not bad. The beans are full of flavor and a good amount of cheese. As for the taquitos they are prepackaged commercial taquitos so nothing special but the guacamole is what you need them for because that is really good. But I am a carnivore at heart so asking me to get a craving for a bean and cheese burrito is not really realistic. This visit, I happened to be in the area and I was alone with my oldest and I asked him to join me for dinner before we go home and make dinner for the family. Of course he was excited and we decided to stop here before I changed my mind, LOL. He ordered a chili dog with chili cheese fries and had the taquitos because that is what they are known for. The taquitos were just as tasty as I remembered but the chili cheese fries were something new. The chili had a good flavor and they put white cheese on top which gave me mixed feelings. The combination of chili and I am guessing Monterey jack cheese is good but not what I consider to be traditional. My son enjoyed his meal and I enjoyed mine but I think I will stick to my other spots as opposed to this location. read more

NEXT TIME JUST HAPPENED. I've driven by here hundreds of times, literally, since my brother moved there way back in the 80's. I've always wanted to try the pastrami, but opted for all the other choices nearby, thinking to myself, "next time." Next time happened last night, around 1 am, when I was driving home, feening for a pastrami from The Hat, which was closed. I distinctly remembered this place being 24 hours, so it was really the only quick option on my way home cutting through the middle of LA on my way back to the IE from Ventura. My one wish is that I had stopped by sooner in my lifetime. Nice, greasy overflowing meats, just like The Hat, only better because I can enjoy this just about anytime. It's actually cheaper, too, by about $3. It's definitely NOT a healthy choice, but what the stomach wants, the stomach wants. I don't think my brother knows how lucky he is to be walking distance from this place. (I know this review is based on one sandwich, but they do have other things there, and people were ordering other things that night who called in their orders so late, so I know their other stuff has got to be worth it -- especially if they had a steady stream of customers on an early Monday morning.
