J & S is an institution in Montebello. It's the only 24 hour spot that I know of in the area so while you may or may not have remembered doing so, more than likely you have visited. *Please note* This review is only based on the Bean & Cheese burrito which to my knowledge is the only item I have ever ordered at J & S. Ok to be completely honest, the only item I've ever ordered where I was completely sober. J & S is that type of place. True confessions aside the Bean and Cheese is the reason I keep coming back. White cheese rather than the typical yellow is a bit different than the usual *Eastside experience but in this case it's what makes this burrito memorable. The beans are on par with the best that I have tasted which being Chicano brought up in East LA, means a lot. I cannot vouch for the other items on the menu but based on the photos alone I will stick to the tried and true. When you get the munchies early in the morning (whether it's because you were driving late at night, need some food because you're drunk, or you were on some nasty drugs) there are unfortunately very few places that offer decent food. Luckily for you, if you are in the middle of nowhere in Montebello, J & S is here to save you. My girlfriend and I were driving down to SoCal on a Thursday night and were looking for a quick snack. We were trying to avoid the usual Jack in the Box, In n Out, etc. but our options seemed pretty bleak. But to our surprise, there was a little place called J & S right next to the Freeway. This is a perfect 24/7 shop that is accessible for drivers who want to make a quick pit stop on their trip. J & S, in all respects, is a late night meat fest. On their menu, you will see that they have literally no veggies in their items. This is an omnivore's dream and a herbivore's nightmare. For example, if you get the beef burrito like me, your burrito will only have stewed beef and jalapeños; NO VEGGIES!! This is absolutely fine late at night when you need a refuel. So how was this place? My girlfriend got the hot dog and I got the beef burrito. Overall, it's what you can expect. For late night food, it wasn't that bad. The portions were okay and the food tasted fine. I was happy that my burrito had a huge helping of stewed beef that just melted in my mouth. It was also a bit spicy too. They have some red and green sauce for you if you want. I think they had salsa, but not sure if they charged so I didn't ask. Overall, I thought that J & S was a worthwhile pitstop for us. The food was okay and best part was that it came out fast. The only thing I can really knock off about J & S is that there were no veggies. But I guess that's how they can give you a quick meal that's still cheap. Other than that, the food gave us fuel and we were back on the road in less than a half an hour. Holy crap this place is delicious. We wanted some Mexican food on the way to the mountains and stopped at J&S (it has the same initials as me and my wife...figured it was a sign). I had a shredded beef burrito that was juicy and wonderful. My wife is super picky on taquitos and said these were the best she's had in years. Their chips are magical, salsa has good flavor and I got a taquito hot dog because it sounded weird and it was tasty as hell. I live far away and would consider a road trip to Montebello just to eat this special food again. read more

The burritos here are amazing. My dad has been taking me and my family to this place for years! Every morning during the weekend we like to order their breakfast burritos with potatoes, cheese, ham, and beans. My personal favorite is the green chili all meat burrito, I'm not a big fan of a lot in my burrito, so this one was perfect for me! I first starting coming here when I was just a little girl with my family. This little spot has been here for years already , and just about everyone I know who has tried it loves it here. My favorite here for breakfast would have to be the breakfast burritos (sausage or bacon), or a bean and chorizo burrito with cheese inside. For lunch/dinner just about everything here is good. I usually get a small order of chili cheese fries and an order taquitos with guacamole spread over it. If it's not that , I usually get the plate order of two hard shell tacos, with a side of rice and beans. For my younger siblings who are pretty picky , they usually get a hot dog or a order of tenders. A little spit where you would not think of trying, so worth trying. Yes it's ugly and tattered but it will never let me down. J & S is like a reliable friend you've known since your childhood. They're always open and you know what your going to get......every time! The little league guacamole works really good......The burgers aren't bad when you've had too much to drink. First of all, I don't know anywhere else that makes Pastrami Quesadilla and the quesadilla not only have just cheese, and pastrami slapped together in tortilla skin.. they actually even have Guacamole in it! SO DARN DELICIOUS! Also ordered the "breakfast burrito." I personally think that Lucky Boy in Pasadena still serves THE best breakfast burrito. However, for around 5 dollars, breakfast burrito is decent here.. there's beans in this burrito though and I am not really a fan of beans inside my burrito.. so maybe that's why. Ordered small chilli cheese fries and I personally also think that Pepe's makes THE best chilli cheese fries ever! I've been eating the soft tostadas, tacos, and taquitos here since I was in high school. It is what it is and that means it's not high end, family restaurant, or fancy. It's J&S open 24 x 7 and cheap as hell. They could charge double and I would still be there. It's like a dive taco bell in the old days when each location cooked their own food. I like going here when the oldtime cook (from my high school days) is here and you can tell as he has an old monte carlo that's in the parking lot. He has a better sense of proportions when making my favorite soft tostada then the day time guy. If it's after midnight, then I don't go as this place gets crowded with the nightlife crowd. So, it's still at night time pickup place for me just not at the late night prime time. The burritos are only okay and I prefer the tacos (shredded beef), taquitos (fake, but good guacamole), and the soft tosada's. If you never had a soft tostada it's made with beans, lettuce, tomatoes, guacamole, and cheese. I have had this at other places but can't find a better one so try one if you haven't. I'm a fan, but I couldn't really recommend it for awesome mexican food unless you're into a value proposition or need a mexican food fix when other places are closed. But if you have the desire, are in the hood, and don't need a restaurant experience, then I would recommend it for the menu items mentioned. read more

I stopped going after my buddy ate 2 chorizo burritos and an order of toquitos in one sitting. The food is super cheap and greasy. Their french fries, tator tots are saturated with oil, and it has old oil flavor. I will never again order their fries there. I ordered nachos and they gave me a bunch of chips with very very little shredded cheese that was not even melted. People order breakfast burritos there, but I didn't like it, the shitty potatoes in it killed it for me. However their taquitos are good. Not the best, but for the price and the crunchiness and amount of fake guacamole makes it worth it. I like their chorizo burrito , even though it isn't like real chorizo at a real Mexican place. I opened it up one time and it looked like there was tofu and other weird stuff in there. Those are the only 2 things I order there if I go read more

IWe ordered the guacamole fries, taquitos, enchillada plate and quesadilla with meat. 1) Taquitos: Gross frozen taquitos with imitation store bought guacamole. 2) Guacamole Fries: decent fries, Del Taco style, with more imitation store bought guacamole. 3) Enchilladas: Disgusting. Sauce was gross, beans tasted like can. Rice was decent 4) Quesadilla with machaca meat: Gross! Worse thing I ate. I couldn't wait to get home and wash the damn smell from my hands. Even the coke tasted odd. And I don't think it helps when you leave and see the cook digging through the trash cans for can's and bottles. Overall, bad! I read about this place in one of the Yelp weekly newsletters, the hangover cure edition. To my delight, this place is just down the street from where I work. It so happens this place is dirt cheap and I'm on a budget, it was a match made in financial heaven. For less than $5 I got a green burrito (shredded beef in a verde sauce) and guacamole fries. The next visit I had the special quesadilla (cheese, bacon, lettuce, and tomato (?)) Those were the suggestions off one of the reviews in the Yelp newsletter, and man did they steer me in the right direction. Over the years I have raved about them so much I offered to buy anyone their first b&c from here. Of course they always ended up craving one after that. Now to the bad news, I dont know what happened but for the past year the b&c's have tasted less than spectacular. Ive been going back every month or so to see if theyve gone back to tasting the way Ive always remembered, but so far theyve just been ok. Please come back J&S, pleeeeeease! My friend yelped this place and we saw that it was 24 hours so decided to try this place out since we wouldn't feel rushed. Just FYI: CASH ONLY!! Luckily I read that it was cash only from other yelp reviews! Anyway, we ordered a bunch of stuff. The guacamole fries which were my favorite. Very simple but flavorful. I think they should at least add sour cream or some sort of meat. We also got the nachos with cheese and added guacamole for 75 cents I believe. The cheese is not melted btw. The nachos were ok but It was definitely better with guac on it otherwise it'd be dry. Then we ordered a whole bunch of the all meat burritos. It was good but I feel like the only meat you get was shredded pork or something. It was plain but it was still good. We also got a pastrami quesidilla which I didn't get to try since I was too full but my friend said it was good haha All of that was under 40 bucks so we were happy since it fed 4 people.
