Mediocre at best. High ticket prices are fine with me if your food is exceptional. We started with pretzel coated onion rings. They were good but there were 4 rings on the plate with enough sauces for plenty of onion rings and the top of the stack was a ring the size of a silver dollar. $9....you can buy a ton of onions for 9 dollars. The gentlemen ordered ck tortilla soup and the presentation was awesome but the broth was cold. No one ever checked after dropping off food. You would have thought that picking up bowls with all the chips and the butter still in the bowl the server might have asked if things were alright. Our steaks arrived rather slowly and mine, ordered m/r was so rare it was cold in the center. We had to flag the waitress to send it back. A man in a sport coat returned it to the table but not a word was said, he laid it on the table and took off.(now it's medium--we'll show you) I assume he was some sort of manager there were several men with jackets on walking around. If you are going to have food runners serving the tables then someone should shortly be behind to see if things are prepared properly or if anything is needed. We asked for water 3 different times. If you are looking for a quiet spot to dine, have good food, and chat this place is not for you. Very loud . So for $235 dollars for 3 I can go elsewhere for an exceptional dinner. read more

Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. The seductive smells lure you in while the atmosphere, food, and service don't disappoint. They're a steakhouse; get the steak. Don't get me wrong, the rest of their menu is very well executed and tastes amazing, but their steak will have you falling in love with a filet. I also must insist you get their creamed corn with burger's bacon. That's right; creamed corn with bacon. My husband and I are fairly sure it's laced with crack, and we're both ok with that. If you like scallops, I highly recommend getting them here. They're perfectly seared meaning they go in your mouth and melt like butter. Now, I know I just talked up some of their main course options, but I'm also going to attempt to convince you to leave room for dessert because their chocolate cake is to die for. Oh. My. God. Very enjoyable dinner at this restaurant. We shared 2 entrees of a grilled vegetable platter and steak and shrimp dinner. There were 7 different grilled vegetables--all cooked and seasoned well. The steak was tender and the shrimp tasty. My iced tea was steeped and made table side--I've never seen this done before! The sourdough bread was freshly baked. First visit and it most assuredly won't be the last. It was Friday night date night with husband and Wearrived early-evening without reservations. Seating was immediate even though the interior feels small and intimate with limited seating. We were assigned to Jason B., who was both gregarious and quite knowledgeable of the menu. We started with a Caesar salad and pretzel encrusted onion rings. The salad was served with whole anchovies, asiago cheese crisps, and croutons. The dressing was on the heavy side but the flavor was right. The onion rings were accompanied by three sauces, one of which was a house-made barbecue with a smokey flavor. If I HAD to select the least enjoyable menu item, the rings would be it. The batter was bland and failed to stick to the onions very well. We agreed that the parmesan sauce was the most interesting. A fresh-from-the-oven bread loaf was also served on a slate with two types of butter blends. Even as a bread snob by personal admission, that was an awesome bread loaf-- chewy, dense, with a crispy crust. Good stuff to accompany the salad. Husband selected an 8 oz filet medium rare, which he ranked a 10/10 as steaks go. Nice sear, perfectly cooked and seasoned, and juicy. The steak alone determined a return visit is in our future. He selected mushroom risotto and sautéed spinach (Jason's recommendation) as his sides and thoroughly enjoyed both. I chose maple bourbon salmon as my entree. This was magnificent! Juicy, lightly glazed, lovely wood smoke flavor (from the plank) with crispy edges. I would most certainly order this plate again. It was served with fresh, crispy whole green beans and smashed Yukon potatoes that were deliciously creamy and buttery. Not even a crumb was left behind. Dessert consisted of chocolate velvet cake served with a scoop of raspberry ice cream, a dollop of whipped cream and raspberries. The cake included a thick layer of rich chocolate mousse and a layer of chocolate ganache on top. Oh.my.gosh. I could have started with this as my appetizer and completely justified it. We had another outstanding meal at J Gilbert's. Sunday is half price wine night so we started with a great red wine. The calamari appetizer was tender and delicious. We ordered 2 versions of the filet combo. One with crab cake and one with scallops. Both were excellent. Grilled asparagus was perfect and the Lobster Mac and cheese and the au gratin potatoes were decadent sides. You can't go wrong with any of the entrees here. I never wanted to say that a mall-attached restaurant would be a favorite, but I have to admit that J Gilbert's has fast become our favorite steak house in St Louis. I grill a lot steak and typically am disappointed by what I find in restaurants (I am paying how much for this?), but J Gilbert's does things I definitely cannot do, and at a price that ends up being a MUCH better deal than the Ruth Chris's of the world. We ate at j Gilbert's today for lunch. Everything was very tasty. It's definitely worth checking out for a special occasion. They even heard a friend tell me happy birthday while we were standing waiting to get seated. Once seated they gave me a nice card with a hand written note and free dessert. That was super nice and a total surprise!! I had the crab melt and side salad combo. For $14 the crab melt was small. It came on what looked like slices of mini bread slices. We went here for our Anniversary on a Friday night and it was not busy at all. We ordered the seafood platter appetizer ($55) and the waiter forgot to order it. Then after a 45 min wait we received our food. My steak medium rare steak was well done and sent it back. Then they brought me rare steak which had to be sent back. Overall, a new go to place. The steaks were full of flavor, tender, and perfectly cooked. The crab cake appetizer was almost pure crab--delicious. Creme brûlée was huge and good. Service was friendly, attentive and on point. The only sour food note was the apple croustade. The crust looked tough and it was. Boring and flavorless. What almost ruined the night for us, however? We had reservations in place for 2 weeks. Arrived 5 minutes early. And were seated at the bar! Thankfully the service was so good, my annoyance faded. Finally we try this fabulous place ! Started with the crab cakes, pricey but very tasty , 3 toppings to add to the adventure. Next , the crab bisque . Served interestingly . The bowl empty except for the crab in the center, then the piping hot bisque pored around the crab meat. Excellent flavor. The steak and scallops were very good, though I must admit the scallops were about the best I've had. Steaks done to the desired wellness . And the shrimp, were good, large, but not as notable as the scallops. The creme brûlée was awesome . I love steak and have been to virtually every establishment in the St Louis market. This restaurant is hands down the best option around. The steak is melt in your mouth quality with a delicious wood fired taste. The sides are also delicious and fresh along with the fresh baked breads. This is all combined with great service. Servers are very good at their profession and manager usually stops by to check on you. It is expensive, but most entrees include sides and the food quality is much better than Annie Guns (for example) at a comparable price. read more

We celebrated our 52nd anniversary recently at J. Gilberts. The door was opened for us upon entering the restaurant, which was special. We were brought to a booth by the fireplace. Joseph, our very friendly waiter, was very knowledgeable and helpful to us in our menu choices. My husband had the New York Strip and I the filet mignon. We had salad baked potato and asparagus. The steaks were grilled to perfection and seasoned very favorably. We have never had as excellent service as we had with Joseph. He made our anniversary celebration truly special. I would never return to J. Gilbert's ever again. My boyfriend and I went on last Friday and were not impressed. First of all, it was my boyfriends dinner and even with the visible free dessert card out waiter did not wish him happy birthday once.. he did not even ask if we were there to celebrate anything. He also did not speak of any specials, we always felt rushed by him, or barely even spoke to him at all. I got the filet and my boyfriend got the Cajun filet. My steak was extremely salty, but honestly, everything was so sub par. Although this is on the cheaper end of upscale steaks (with two sides included), I still do not believe the taste was worth the price. I could almost compare it to Outback. We also had a free birthday dessert, the chocolate velvet cake, but it was a little less enjoyable without a birthday candle. Also, the environment is beautiful on the inside, but it was ruined with not one family with crying babies a table over, but two. This place is not appropriate for your crying child. Between the average food and our totally inattentive and almost disrespectful waiter, we will not be returning.. ever. read more

We went to J Gilberts for our anniversary and were NOT disappointed. It is a little pricey but the food was excellent and the service was out of this world. We called at 4:30pm for a reservation that evening and they did what they could to get us a table telling us they could seat us in the bar area. When we got there they told us someone else decided to sit in the bar and we could sit in the main dining room. We told them it was our anniversary and just as we were seated someone brought us a hand written card congratulating us, and thanking us for choosing J Gilberts for such a special occasion. They even told us to have a dessert on them. (now THAT is good marketing). The steak was delicious and cooked exactly like we liked it and the scallops and lobster risotto was fantastic. This is by far one of our best restaurants in town. I have been going here since they opened their doors. Their food, the extra special offers they provide you on your birthday and anniversaries and the ambiance is gorgeous. I love sitting by the fireplace. Nikki is by far their best waitress. Her attention to detail is unmatched. They have half price bottles of wine on Sundays and their list is impressive so it is one of the best deals in town. My favorites on the menu include the Ahi Tuna Tartare appetizer, the Crab Bisque and Tortilla soup are not only delicious but the presentation is impressive as they pour the broth or bisque over the ingredients at your table which really opens up the aroma to all the guests at your table. Their bread is soft and hot and served with two butters. Their maple glazed wood plank salmon is buttery and always cooked to perfection. Their tuna has the perfect peppery grill on it and their cajun spiced filet is so tender and perfect spice. Their sides are equally impressive, including their poblano au gratin potatoes, asparagus and brussel sprouts. This will always be in my top 5 restaurants in St Louis. read more
